good morning, america. as we kick off this holiday week, new trouble brewing for millions of travelers all across the country. double trouble. two major storms on the move threatening holiday travel for 35 million across the country. airlines already issuing waivers as some areas brace for up to a foot of snow. ginger has the very latest track and timing. forced out. the top navy official fired as the firestorm grows after trump intervened in the case of the navy s.e.a.l. accused of war crimes. shakeup. billionaire michael bloomberg officially entering the race for president with a record-breaking ad buy.> koalas in crisis. deadly fires raging across australia scorching more than 3 million acres and threatening the lives of one of the world's most beloved animals.
7:01 am
the race to save them this morning. breaking this morning, historic heist. what could be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of art and jewels stolen from one of the world's top museums. live on "gma." with thanksgiving the worst day of the year for cooking fires just around the corner, our demo. we're going live in a burning house, when every moment counts, only on "gma" this morning. and sending a message to the taylor swift crowned queen of the amas, making history. and shaking off the haters and the records with a powerhouse performance. we certainly do say good morning, america. it's good to be taylor swift this morning. >> artist of the decade at last night's amas. also broke the record for most awards ever. >> it's kind of nice to be taylor swift i think every morning probably, right? okay, not the only big performance last night.
7:02 am
look at this, the throwback. shania twain, she was on the stage and did a medley of some of her greatest hits. man, i feel like a woman. >> do you now? >> i'm not sure what i'm feeling this morning, robin. >> we'll have more on that a little later. but first, we begin with those two major storms threatening holiday travel as a record number of people get ready to hit the roads and sky for thanksgiving. some airlines already issuing travel waivers, and ginger starts us off with the latest.o. >> good morning, robin. would it be the holidays if we didn't have a holiday mess? well, it's already started. we have pictures out of columbia county, pennsylvania, northeastern pennsylvania, with a little slushy hit of snow. that's going to mess up the roads a bit but nothing compared to what we're about to see through denver tonight, through early tomorrow. we're talking 6 inches to 12 inches of snow in parts of the plains, also east of there, and the winds could gust to 35 miles per hour. and by thursday itself, you know macy's, the parade with the balloons, they have a threshold, 35 mile-per-hour gusts they
7:03 am
can't fly those balloons. we could get there by thursday. let's talk about the second storm and that's going to impact everybody on the west coast. we're talking san francisco, los angeles could see major impacts, flash flooding in some of there, and you get to the rockies. it's going to be more snow. that's why you see wind alerts from the panhandle of texas, oregon, nebraska. where do we think there will be issues? airport-wise, rapid city, minneapolis, denver. you could see some slowdowns from l.a. and las vegas. if you're traveling any of those, please be on alert. if you're going through denver, four airlines have already started issuing travel waivers. we will be watching this as it develops. it's far from perfect, george. >> we know you're on top of it. ginger, thanks. to washington now where the navy secretary has been forced to resign, at odds with president trump and his pentagon secretary over the handling of a navy s.e.a.l. war crimes case. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz tracking all the fallout. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. navy leaders risked their jobs after publicly disagreeing with president trump over the
7:04 am
handling of this case which they saw at the heart of the navy's fundamental values and discipline, and this morning, after an extraordinary back and forth, the navy secretary has been fired. this morning, the navy's top civilian official, secretary richard spencer, is out of a job, forced to resign over his handling of eddie gallagher, the navy s.e.a.l., acquitted by a military court of war crime charges in the killing of a teenage isis fighter, but convicted of posing with the dead teen's body. the navy responding by demoting gallagher in rank. >> this is all about ego and retaliation. this has nothing to do with good order and discipline. >> reporter: the controversy has pitted the trump administration against the u.s. navy. in his resignation letter to president trump, spencer writes, i no longer share the same understanding with the commander-in-chief who appointed me in regards to the key principle of good order and discipline.
7:05 am
the president first intervened in the case by ordering the navy to restore gallagher's rank and benefits, then publicly slamming the navy for launching a review that could have stripped gallagher of his status as a navy s.e.a.l., tweeting, the navy will not be taking away war fighter eddie gallagher's trident pin. the reasons for spencer's firing differ. defense secretary mark esper says spencer went behind his back, secretly meeting with white house officials last week, proposing to restore gallagher's rank and allow him to retire with his trident pin if trump did not intervene in gallagher's review process while publicly saying otherwise. overnight, president trump pointed to the navy's handling of the gallagher trial and spencer's failure to address large cost overruns from past administrations. esper in the end saying that gallagher could retain his trident pin. >> i just want to retire
7:06 am
peacefully with all the honors that i've earned. >> abc has learned that moments before esper's decision, gallagher had decided to relinquish his trident, believing his case had become too divisive. but now, he will be able to keep the coveted trident despite his being convicted. george. >> okay, thank you very much, martha. robin? all right, and now to the race for 2020. former new york city mayor mike bloomberg announcing that he is running for the democratic presidential nomination. linsey davis is at the bloomberg tower here in midtown manhattan with more. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. for several weeks it was this game of is he or isn't he. well, now, michael bloomberg is in. now, this is the same man who just eight months ago had said i'm not running for president, citing that he was very clear-eyed about just how difficult it would be to win the nomination. now michael bloomberg has had a change of heart and he is putting his money where his mouth is. it's official. billionaire michael bloomberg is running for president of the united states.
7:07 am
>> mike bloomberg for president. jobs creator, leader, problem solver. it's going to take all three to build back a country. >> reporter: over the weekend, the bloomberg campaign headquarters in new york city coming alive with staff and moving trucks. >> did somebody say billionaire? >> reporter: and "snl" including a bloomberg caricature, interrupting the most recent democratic debate. >> is there time for me to come in late and ruin everything? >> reporter: the 77-year-old former republican says he's a new choice for democrats. >> and now he's taking on him. >> reporter: in the lead-up to this announcement, bloomberg apologized for his stop and frisk policy that he defended for years. >> i want you to know that i realize back then i was wrong. >> reporter: estimated to be worth $53 billion, he's one of the richest people in the world, and now using his own money to fund his race for the white house. his campaign says he'll spend whatever it takes. now rolling out $37 million in tv ads, more than half of the $50 million the entire 2020
7:08 am
democratic presidential field has spent on tv ads so far this year, which is rubbing some of his opponents the wrong way. >> we do not believe that billionaires have the right to buy elections. [ applause ] >> you can't buy passion. if you have to put people against money, i will take people every day of the week. >> reporter: while bloomberg has the financial resources, his apparent strategy, bypassing the early contests, hasn't worked in the modern era, though it is doable if he's able to focus on the states that make up super tuesday on march 3rd and succeed. 40% of the delegates are up for grabs. bloomberg did not file for the new hampshire primary but he still has a chance in iowa and south carolina. robin. >> and he will not be on the debate stage either, is that right? >> reporter: that's right. for december at least, he's not met the criteria as far as donors and polling but we could very well see him there in the future. >> very well. okay, linsey, thank you.
7:09 am
okay, we're going to get the latest now in the impeachment, and the prospect of the new hearings based on new evidence. an indicted associate of the president's personal attorney, rudy giuliani, has provided information to the intelligence committee including audio and video recordings. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the details. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. impeachment is very much on the fast track right now. democrats are hoping to vote on articles of impeachment by the end of the year but with this new evidence it is crystal clear this investigation is far from over. this morning, democrats pushing ahead with impeachment, despite not having testimony from key witnesses like former national security adviser john bolton and former white house counsel don mcgahn. >> we're not willing to allow them to wait us out, to stall this proceeding, when the facts are already overwhelming. >> reporter: a federal judge expected to decide today whether mcgahn must comply with a subpoena and testify, but democrats say time is of the essence and they're not willing to wait out a long court fight. >> we're going to continue our investigation.
7:10 am
we are going to continue to pursue -- >> even after you handed in the report? >> oh, yes, the investigation isn't going to end. >> reporter: and now, abc news has learned the house intelligence committee has obtained audio and video recordings of the president's personal attorney, rudy giuliani, and the president himself. it's unclear exactly what the images show but they were given to investigators as part of a subpoena by lev parnas, one of giuliani's recently indicted associates accused of campaign finance violations. giuliani telling fox news he's not at all worried that the president might expect him to take the fall. >> i've seen things written like he's going to throw me under the bus. >> right. >> when they say that, i say, he isn't, but i have insurance. >> reporter: well, that insurance comment certainly raised a lot of eyebrows. saying that he was being sarcastic. despite this huge controversy, giuliani says he and president trump are better friends than ever before, as close as ever he says, george. >> he may be backtracking but that was at least the second time he's made that insurance
7:11 am
comment. meantime, there's also new evidence being developed out of the white house that the white house and omb were actually scrambling to come up with a justification of that freeze in ukraine military aid after the president's july 25th phone call. >> reporter: yeah, george. sources are telling us that there's an internal review happening here, the white house looking into the origins of this controversy. as you said, it's now at the center of the impeachment probe. they've reportedly discovered these emails that show top aides here trying to justify this freeze on military aid to ukraine well after the fact. so far the focus is on acting chief of staff mick mulvaney and the budget office here. certainly this is going to add fuel to the fire for congressional democrats who have been demanding to see these records but they're being stonewalled by the white house, george. >> the state department as well. okay, cecilia, thank you very much. t.j.? this morning, pro-democracy voters are celebrating a huge victory in hong kong. their candidates pulled off a major win in local elections after nearly six months of violent protests against the
7:12 am
government in beijing. 3 million people, that is 70% of eligible voters showed up signaling support for those demonstrators helping pro-democracy candidates capture 385 out of 452 seats. they previously had fewer than a third of those seats. all right, t.j. also this morning, we're following the latest on supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg's health. the 86-year-old was hospitalized over the weekend after experiencing chills and a fevef. a spokesman says she's home and doing well. she has had a few health scares recently. in the past year, she's undergone surgery for lung cancer, and radiation treatment for pancreatic cancer and we of course wish her all the very best. we'll turn now to that massive heist, thieves making away with what could end up being hundreds of millions of dollars worth of jewels and art from a museum in germany known as the green vault. abc's ian pannell has the story for us, and ian, it seems like the vault wasn't locked up as tightly as it should have been. >> reporter: that's right, t.j.
7:13 am
good morning. details still coming through right now, could be the most audacious robbery ever. police in germany reporting there was a break-in at the historic green vault which houses one of the largest collections of treasures in europe, and what some say is the world's oldest museum. german police say detectives are now on the scene. and investigating. authorities are refusing to say exactly what was taken. we believe it was three diamond jewelry sets. the fear is, they could be broken down and sold off. we believe a power supply was cut shortly before 5:00 a.m. police arrived shortly but robbers managed to escape. reports describe the robbers as, quote, strikingly small. they say they may have got away with jewelry, diamonds and gems worth millions of dollars. the hunt is now on. t.j.? >> ian, thank you so much. we see this stuff in the movies.
7:14 am
it's always so fascinating to here these details. >> somebody is already writing the script. >> right. >> thank you, t.j. we're going to move on now to the deadly wildfires in australia destroying millions of acres and threatening the koala population. hundreds of them have died in this unprecedented outbreak and even more have lost their habitats. james longman has the story. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. koalas are already becoming fast endangered species, but wildfires are threatening to wipe them out all together. they're a national treasure but this morning the fate of australia's koala population is hanging in the balance as deadly fires continue to rage across the country. the chairman of the australian koala foundation estimates that over 1,000 koalas have been killed from fires and over 80% of their habitat has been destroyed. this report coming days after this dramatic koala rescue was caught on camera. you can see the woman wrapping rt
7:15 am
and carrying it to safety. >> i knew that if we didn't get him down from the tree, then he would have been up there amongst the flames. >> reporter: she was later reunited with the battered animal which now has a long road of recovery ahead. recent bush fires caused by prolonged drought and deforestation have caused already threatened koala numbers to decline. >> what's left is so dry that they're not getting nutrients. >> reporter: many have urged the australian government to pass the koala protection act that was written in 2016. now thousands have joined the cause. one hospital raised more than 63 times their original goal of $25,000, now surpassing $1.5 million. >> the bush is going to take a long time to recover so these animals might be in our care for much, much longer. >> now, you may have seen a headline that went viral saying koalas were functionally extinct. but a word of caution, that's a little overblown. it was referring to the ongoing loss of their natural habitat
7:16 am
over the last 20 years. as well as these animals, these fires have left at least six people dead and hundreds homeless and given australia's dry summer season has only just begun, wildfires may rage for weeks. guys? >> could happen. all right, thanks so much. we're going to turn now to who dat nation. yes, my beloved saints doing it again. come on, this win was incredible. i mean -- >> they all are, robin. >> time was running out, 33-yard fielgreat drew brees led his team from their own 14 yard line, under two minutes to play, setting up that kick. his 50th game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or in overtime. never say never when the saints have the ball in the hands of drew brees like that. >> okay. >> you were in carolina this weekend. >> i was. i was on the float with the carolina panthers mascot actually. i wasn't rooting for them. we just happened to be together. >> can you explain that? >> it's a longer story.
7:17 am
but you feel bad for the kicker, the rookie kicker for the panthers missed three kicks and cost them five points in that game. poor guy, but that's how it goes, but congratulations. >> congratulations. we're following a lot of other stories this morning. up next, taylor swift sent a message last night shaking off her battle with her former label. she delivered a knockout performance at the amas. we're going to tell you what she said about her record-setting night. and live on "gma," how to survive the flames. our matt gutman is going into a model home, setting it on fire. he has a live demo that could help save your life. you do not want to miss this. that's coming up in our next half hour, but first, back to ginger. i've got to show you, on the map here that doesn't look like a lot but that low pressure system could make travel nearly impossible tonight through early tomorrow in denver. and here's how it's all going to work out. you'll get that wrap-around snow and that's why we want to pop out the state of colorado and focus on what's going to happen. you know tonight it's early, tomorrow, but what do all the
