died by apparent suicide. they've pleaded not guilty. a lawyer for one of the guards says the two are scapegoats. >> all we have is a rush to judgment, a rush to charge the smallest of people who are getting paid the least, and make those people pay for the ndhe t didn't happen throughout an entire system. >> reporter: but the prosecutor points to jail surveillance allegedly showing the guards sat at their desk and appeared to have been asleep, at times shopping online. guard michael thomas allegedly later telling a supervisor, we messed up, we didn't do any rounds. epstein had just been removed from suicide watch, but was left for eight hours before he was found with a noose around his neck. prosecutors say no one was seen entering epstein's cell block. the defense wants to see those videos. the prosecutors say the evidence in this case includes hundreds of hours of jailhouse surveillance.

♪ ♪ good tuesday morning to you. did you know thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year in america for house fires? >> abc's matt gutman joined crews at the delaware county emergency training center in pennsylvania outside of philadelphia live on "gma" and took us inside an actual house fire. >> reporter: we're here with the folks from ul. they're the people who set the standards for smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and they built this very nice house for us. it's got everything in it. it's basically like any other house that you or i would live in. we're going to open it up, go right in. you can see that it's got carpets in here. i want you to notice, this door is open, that's going to be important, and the door behind me is closed. two-bedroom house. behind us is a living room, typical of anything you might see in the holiday season. you have a christmas tree here,

television, candles, and these couches. i want you to notice these couches. in just a minute we're going to light this on fire. before we do, i want you to let everybody at home know we're here with ul fire experts, philadelphia fire department, this is a live demonstration and a controlled scenario, okay? steve is going to light it up. the fire's starting to peak. i want you to see the smoke. smoke goes up. it's all in this room now. [ fire alarm beeping ] what you don't see is carbon monoxide. that's why those alarms are so important. carbon monoxide is an invisible killer, you're not going to be able to see it. now, notice that this door is closed. it's going to be important in just a few minutes. the room, i want to show you for one sec, it's starting to cook right through that couch. we're getting low. it's cooking right through that couch. in about 45 seconds it's going to get very hot. steve trevor, what's the temperature in here, steve?

what do we got? >> 400 degrees in the living room. >> reporter: 400 degrees and the air is obviously unbreathable. that's why in a situation like this you're going to want to stay low and go. the lower you are, the cooler it is, the cleaner the air is. i'm going to be walking out of here on my knees. you can see you can't see anything behind us. there is a tunnel of clean air at the bottom and a funnel of smoke above us and it's just coursing out of this house. that's why you want to stay as low as possible. it's cooking. we're going to go to the other side. and again, i'm going to do something for the purposes of the demonstration. nobody should ever do this at home. everybody should just get out, then call 911. we're going to go back in here with steve. now remember that room that had a closed door? this is it. i want you to notice at home,

the smoke is coming in. the majority of deaths in house fires occur in the middle of the night. you might be sleeping. you wake up. you notice something is wrong. first thing to do, touch the door. is it hot? is the handle hot? if it is, do not, do not open this door. keep it closed. it's your fire shield. it's going to keep you safe. next thing you want to do, call 911. now if you're in a house is when you want to call 911. you may hear bursting behind us, that's the fire surging out of that room right now. if you're in here, you want to stay low. call 911. firefighters are going to come and they're going to do a perimeter around the house. this is the only time you should open the window. you want to let them know that you're here. what do you do? you open the window. teddy bear, pillow, anything that might alert someone you're here, throw that out the window. close the window. if you keep it open, it's going

including one that forecasters say could be historic and unprecedented. in central california, 30-mile-per-hour winds kicking up dust, cutting visibility, and likely triggering this chain-reaction crash. snow making roads a mess in washington and utah. the storm now headed to colorado. >> this is going to be a big snowmaker, our biggest snowstorm of the season so far. >> reporter: denver's airport expecting nearly 200,000 flyers. a record 31.6 million passengers nationwide are expected to fly over the holiday. and thanksgiving may deliver a bitter dish, the macy's parade balloons may be grounded for the first time since 1971 thanks to high winds. this storm is really expected to kick into high gear on tuesday. flights are already canceled and the morning commute could be a real mess for some of the 50 million people expected to hit these roads over the holiday. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> clayton, thank you. the question now is what will

travelers find today? >> accuweather's adam del rosso has the latest forecast. adam, good morning. >> kenneth and adrienne, good morning. two powerful storms impacting that thanksgiving holiday travel. this first one moving out of the rockies into the plains, bringing blizzard conditions from northeast nebraska and into northwestern iowa. heavy snowfall, strong winds reducing visibility. it's going to be a mess. 6 to 12 inches of snow in this swath of dark blue from colorado into the u.p. of michigan. the other storm dropping in across the west coast of the u.s. today into tomorrow. mountain snows 1 to 3 feet into the sierra and southern cascades. heavy rainfall along the coast of california and it remains unsettled for our thanksgiving day across the west. even into the northeast, strong, breezy winds could impact that macy's thanksgiving day parade. kenneth, adrienne? >> all right, adam, thank you so much. we'll be staying on top of all that weather. >> we have, to especially because of the parade, a tradition so many people camp out for. >> so many people traveling as well, 50 million.

all right. so, now to a legal setback for president trump. a federal judge ruled that former white house counsel don mcgahn must comply with a subpoena to testify before congress. the judge rejected the administration's argument of absolute immunity saying quote presidents are not kings. sources tell abc news lawyers for former national security adviser john bolton are reviewing the ruling as they decide how to proceed with demands to cooperate in the impeachment investigation. >> house intelligence chairman adam schiff says his committee plans to release their impeachment report soon. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: late in a blow to president trump, a federal judge ordered former white house counsel don mcgahn to comply with a subpoena to testify before congress. the white house had attempted to block his testimony and the justice department has already announced it will appeal the

judge's order, setting up a precedent-setting case at the supreme court with implications for other witnesses in the impeachment inquiry. it comes amid a new sign impeachment is on a fast track. house intelligence chairman adam schiff announced he will release a report shortly after thanksgiving, revealing quote a fact pattern that is overwhelming, unchallenged, and damning. but schiff insists the investigative work continues and we are learning additional information almost every day. it comes amidst growing scrutiny of president trump's personal lawyer, rudy giuliani. giuliani dismissed suggestions he'll be the fall guy for the president. >> i see things written like, he's going to throw me under the bus. when they say that, i say, he isn't, but i have insurance. >> reporter: this is at least the second time giuliani has mentions a, quote, insurance policy. he says he's being sarcastic. >> what do you make of rudy giuliani saying he's got insurance? >> i don't know, rudy's a great guy. he covered that himself, you know that. >> reporter: two of giuliani's associates have been indicted by prosecutors in new york.

one of them, lev parnas, says he's eager to cooperate. abc news has learned parnas turned audio and video recordings over to congressional investigators, including recordings of giuliani and the president. it's unclear what the recordings depict. the committee only began reviewing the material last week. the judge's order for former white house council don mcgahn to appear before congress is one of two cases closely watched by another potential star witness in the impeachment inquiry, john bolton, the former national security adviser. the judge in making that order said that her conclusion was quote inescapable, adding, no one is above the law. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. and president trump can keep his tax returns under wraps for now after the supreme court put a congressional subpoena on hold. >> the justices granted the president's request for an emergency stay to keep his financial records confidential while they decide whether to take up the case. the house oversight committee is seeking the records from his

accounting firm. the president's legal team claims he is immune from investigation while in office. this story is crazy, a man wielding a machete is now dead, a police officer hurt, after a drama played out in real life on the streets of hollywood. police say first the suspect committed an armed robbery, then attempted a carjacking at a fast food drive-thru, then took that vehicle, smashed it into two police cars. you can see from this video at one point he actually chased after an officer and that officer fell in the street, he went lunging toward him, and that's when other officers there opened fire at the suspect, killing him. that officer was treated at the scene. we're going to have a full report in our next half hour. >> incredible there. maryland has released three men from prison after 36 years for a murder they did not commit. then 16-year-olds, they were convicted of shooting another boy in an argument about a jacket. their accusers recently recanted. prosecutors say they may have

the man with the machete turns back and starts to chase the officer. >> don't do it, don't do it! >> reporter: the officer fires. but the man pushes forward. the machete still in hand, the officer runs into the street, trips and falls with the armed man standing over him. several other officers open fire. >> that suspect was struck by gunfire and was transported to local hospital where he has since been declared deceased. >> reporter: police recover the machete saying the blade was more than a foot long. amazingly after the carjacking that confrontation with the machete, nobody besides the suspect was seriously hurt. the officer-involved shooting shut this part of sunset down for hours during the height of rush hour traffic here in hollywood. in los angeles, will carr, abc news. >> wow, just incredible. >> just watching that video and how close that officer came to being injured and worse, oh my gosh, wow.

now to washington where a federal judge has ordered former white house counsel don mcgahn to comply with a congressional subpoena to testify. the justice department is vowing to appeal. >> the request for mcgahn to appear before the house judiciary committee stem friday the mueller investigation which could be the basis for a possible article of impeachment for obstruction. the judge said no one is above the law and made it clear the ruling applies to other officials. sources say national security adviser john bolton is now reviewing the ruling as he faces investigation triggered by the ukraine scandal. meanwhile, house intelligence chairman adam schiff says he plans to release his panel's impeachment report soon after thanksgiving. he says they have massive amounts of evidence of misconduct by president trump. the former head of the navy fired over his handling of a war crimes case is speaking out. >> we now know that it was president trump who ordered the pentagon to allow eddie gallagher to retire as a navy s.e.a.l. while the navy secretary was forced out, accused of violating the chain
