meanwhile, a storm being called historic is now bearing down on the west coast. >> whoo! >> reporter: overnight whiteout conditions near denver as a major storm slams the rockies. more than a foot of snow is possible just as the thanksgiving travel rush begins. denver's airport is expecting nearly 200,000 travelers today alone. a record 31.6 million passengers are expected to fly nationwide over the holiday. >> it's the double whammy, we have weather coming in and the holiday. >> reporter: the snow will spread from colorado to the midwest today where people are preparing for thanksgiving dinner early. >> i've got chains for my car so -- >> we have plenty of wine. >> lots of wine and a bulldozer. >> we're good. >> sounds like you're set. >> i think so. >> reporter: meanwhile, overnight on the west coast -- >> as you can see, the fires cross 154 and now it's going down this canyon. >> reporter: this wind-fueled wildfire forcing more

evacuations near santa barbara just as a storm being called historic and unprecedented takes shape in the pacific. hurricane-force winds will batter the northern california and oregon coastlines beginning tonight. in central california, a dust storm is being blamed for this chain reaction crash. and back east in new york, rehearsals now under way for the macy's thanksgiving day parade but the big question remains, will the famous balloons be grounded? wind gusts are expected to reach 40 miles per hour thursday, which would be enough to ground them for the first time since 1971. a lot going on in the weather department across the country. we will take a closer look at the forecast coming up in less than five minutes. we're following breaking news overseas. hundreds of people have been injured in a powerful earthquake in southeastern europe. a magnitude 6.4 quake shook albania this morning. at least six people are confirmed dead. the army is rescuing people from collapsed buildings there. an earthquake in the same area back in september damaged hundreds of buildings. now to the other big story this morning.

a setback for the white house in the impeachment investigation. a federal judge has ruled that the former white house counsel must appear before congress. the judge speaking about president trump's effort to prevent his top aides from testifying saying, quote, presidents are not kings. this ruling could now have far-reaching consequences. abc's andrea fujii is here with more. good morning, andrea. >> reporter: good morning, adrienne. democrats are calling this a major win and hoping other high ranking officials like john bolton could be compelled to testify in impeachment hearings against president trump. but the justice department has already said it will appeal the judge's order. despite the white house efforts to block his testimony, a federal judge ordered former white house counsel don mcgahn to comply with the subpoena to answer questions before congress. mcgahn was a star witness in special counsel robert mueller's investigation. house intelligence chairman adam schiff announced he'll release a report shortly after thanksgiving. he also called the ruling a very significant victory for

congressional oversight and for the american people. meanwhile, the justice department says it will appeal the judge's order keying up a precedent-setting case at the supreme court with implications for other witnesses in the impeachment inquiry. but schiff insists the investigative work continues and we are learning additional information almost every day. this all comes amid growing scrutiny of president trump's personal lawyer, rudy giuliani. giuliani dismissed suggestions he'll be the fall guy for the president. >> i've seen things written like he's going to throw me under the bus. >> right. >> when they say that, i say he isn't, but i have insurance. >> reporter: giuliani though insists his comment was sarcastic. >> what do you make of rudy giuliani saying he has insurance? >> rudy is a great guy. rudy was -- rudy was the -- and he covered that himself, you know that. >> reporter: meanwhile, sources tell abc news the team of former national security adviser john bolton is reviewing the federal judge's ruling to determine if it impacts how they proceed with the ongoing congressional inquiries. in making this order the judge

said that the conclusion was, quote, inescapable and no one is above the law. now, if mcgahn wanted to assert executive privilege to avoid testifying, the judge ruled he would need to appear before congress to do it himself likely on a question-by-question basis. adrienne. >> andrea, thank you. turning to the controversy at the pentagon, we now know the order to allow eddie gallagher to retire as a navy s.e.a.l. came directly from president trump. one day after the head of the navy was fired over his handling of the war crimes case, the president continued to praise gallagher as a war fighter who needed to be protected. gallagher was cleared of killing a captive isis militant but was convicted of posing with the corpse. fired navy secretary richard spencer was asked by cbs news what message the case sends to the troops. >> that you can get away with things. we have to have good order and discipline. it's the backbone of what we do. i don't think he really understands the full definition of a war fighter. a war fighter is a profession of

arms and a profession of arms has standards that they have to be held to and they hold themselves to. >> defense secretary mark esper said he fired spencer for going behind his back to make a deal with the white house on gallagher. but spencer says esper was traveling overseas and his staff was briefed. three maryland men are free this morning after spending 36 years in prison for a murder they didn't commit. the men walked out of a baltimore prison last night to a crowd of supporters. they had been convicted of shooting another teen back in 1983 over a georgetown university jacket. they were all 16 years old at the time when they entered prison. the baltimore state's attorney's office found evidence that the witnesses may have been coerced and that police may have withheld evidence. now to the partial building collapse in cincinnati. officials at the scene say they're hoping for a miracle. four workers were found alive but one is still missing. last night the search became a recovery effort. the structure came down yesterday afternoon as workers

dramatic rescue of a professional surfer off portugal. he was riding a big wave back to shore when an even bigger wave, 50 feet high, came up behind him. >> wow. >> thankfully his teammate was right there with a jet ski to rescue him. whoo. 50 feet. >> that's a big one. and a new jersey woman could spend up to ten years in prison for texting while driving leading to a deadly collision. alexandra mansonet was just convicted of vehicular manslaughter in a 2016 crash. prosecutors say she was texting a relative about dinner when she slammed into another car causing an accident that killed a pedestrian and hope it will deter others from texting behind the wheel. >> this unfortunately resulted in somebody losing a life and a family who loved her that won't see her anymore. and that's what makes these cases incredibly heart wrenching. >> mansonet claims she looked down to adjust the defroster and doesn't remember texting. >> wow. well, amazon is dismissing a new report that suggests its

warehouses are dangerous places to work. a joint investigation by the radio station reveal and "the atlantic" found a high number of injuries at the company's fulfillment centers. the report says amazon's, quote, obsession with speed has turned its warehouses into an injury mill, end quote. now, according to the investigation, the injury rate at one california warehouse was more than quadruple the industry average. amazon calls the number of injuries in this report misleading. there could soon be a new richest man in the world, and his name is not gates or bezos. it's bernard arnault, chairman of the french luxury goods retailer, lvmh, the parent company of louis vuitton, which just bought tiffany's. after the deal "forbes" magazine says his net worth rose to $106 billion. that's just shy of bill gates and only 4 billion shy of amazon's jeff bezos. >> interesting. well, dissecting real

the woman worked as a caretaker for a couple with alzheimer's. the sheriff called it one of the most horrific scenes he's ever seen. >> oh, my goodness. next this morning the search for answers after a brazen heist at one of the world's oldest museums. >> the priceless jewels stolen from the museum in dresden, germany. and now officials are organizing a special team to crack the case. these are the priceless artifacts that were stolen in a matter of minutes from the green vault museum in dressen, germany. thieves making off with three sets of 18th century jewels including historic swords, pearls and diamonds. >> these objects are extremely precious because of their value but also because of their craftsmanship because of the history that they have embedded in it. >> reporter: police have released this surveillance footage showing two ax-wielding thieves smashing their way into glass cases containing the jewels said to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. the thieves certainly did some planning. this morning authorities are investigating whether they sparked a fire in an electrical

junction box near the museum which created a blackout in the surrounding area. they say after entering the building through a smashed window, they headed straight for the display case that held the jewels. the thieves reportedly escaped in an audi a6, a luxury car with a top speed of 155 miles per hour. a car matching that description was found on fire at a nearby parking garage. the suspects long gone. sounds like a movie, right? museum officials are urging whomever is responsible not to break the jewels up into pieces. they claim they'll be nearly impossible to sell because of the publicity surrounding this case. next to the wild scene in hollywood after police shot a robbery suspect holding a machete. an officer was chasing the man after police say he robbed a store, carjacked a vehicle and then smashed into a parked police cruiser then turned and started running toward an officer chasing him into the street, lunging toward that officer who had fallen on the ground. another fired at the suspect

killing him. >> it's sad that someone died but at the same time i'm glad they got him because running around with a machete, he could have killed anybody. >> the suspect later died at the hospital. police say the machete's blade was more than a foot long. in sports now the baltimore ravens are on a roll. lamar jackson threw five touchdown passes in his monday night football debut last night. the ravens blew out the rams in l.a., 45-6. we now know the names of this year's two white house turkeys. they're bread and butter. >> bread and butter. >> the two male turkeys will be pardoned in the traditional ceremony this morning. they're spending the night at a hotel down the street. well, up next in "the pulse," a very unusual place to celebrate thanksgiving. also ahead, some confusion this morning about the hero military dog who helped take down the leader of isis. but first the big moment from the big "dancing with the stars" finale. stars" finale.

making news right now at 4:27, the bay area bracing for the first major rainstorm of the season. mike nicco tracking when the wet weather will arrive. and relentless winds are driving a raging wildfire in southern california. it's exploded to 3,000 acres in just 12 hours. >> just in time for thanksgiving, the biggest snowstorm in years is pounding the rockies and the midwest and has caused flight cancellations here in the bay area. and it's just beginning. >> it's just starting. it really is. it's going to be everything we talked about and maybe even more. so let's just jump right on in. >> let's do it. >> it's november 26th and here we go, never more than seven minutes away. it's a 2 still. when it hits, it's going to hit so hard. we're going to have some road

showers possibly late they are morning through the early afternoon hours, but it's really late this afternoon through the evening that we'll have the rain heavy at times, the ponding on the roadways, the sideways rain as winds will be gusting around 45 to 50 miles per hour. a half inch to an inch of rain falling in just several hours. and that's why we're going to have the potential for ponding on the roads. the storm system doesn't look like much now, does it? it's sliding down that slippery slope, gathering moisture and energy, and when it hits, it's going to hit hard f. you're heading out now, it was 32 degrees on my car thermometer driving into work. most of us in the 40s. our highs in the 50s. jobina with a dry commute so far. we are pulling for it right now this is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a couple high wind advisories to talk about right now. you can see the cash lanes are stacked up here. a high wind advisory for the bay bridge. also when you hop on to the bridge on the upper deck, be

aware there will probably be at least one lane closed due to bridge work. it's been alternating between one lane, two lanes, left lanes. at last check they were in the left lane. also now high wind advisory for the san mateo bridge this morning. we are seeing the brake lights as people move into the peninsula. a quick look at our drive times of we have tracy to castro valley a 38-minute ride. and highway 1 to san francisco nine minutes. reggie and coupkumasi? few people will be relieved more than those who live in the north bay. they've been hit numerous times with fire and the threat of fire this fall. >> reporter amy hollyfield is live in richmond where people are also preparing for the rain. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning. no sprinkles yet. it's very cold, though. we know that rain is coming this afternoon and people are getting ready. it will hit the north bay over to richmond and soaked all of us. go ahead and start making plans

now. a lot of people already have. this is a hardware store where they say weather proof gear is flying off the shelves. they've sold out of tarps. quite a contrast when they were selling stuff to help people with their power outages. now people are getting ready for the rain. at the christmas tree lots looking on the bright side saying the rain will help their christmas trees stay fresh and they're happy that they're not talking about power outage right now. >> we're happy we don't have to worry about the power outages. we live on bare minimal out here. the little bit of electricity we have really helps. >> reporter: public works crews are busy clearing all the leaves out of the streets. so many have fallen in the last few days. they don't want them in creek channels, storm drains, so they're trying to get those cleared out. also asking people not
