as we join you this tuesday morning, 100 million on alert for a weather triple threat this thanksgiving. powerful storms closing in right now, threatening holiday travel with flooding and more than a foot of snow. already causing chaos on the roads and at the airport, more than 400 flights already canceled. alerts stretching into the east and the big question about the thanksgiving parade. will heavy winds keep those famous balloons on the ground? furious flames. overnight, our team live on the scene as a major wildfire erupts in california exploding into more than 3,000 acres in just hours. choking highways, threatening homes. mandatory evacuations under way. not above the law. the white house takes a blow in court overnight after trying to block key aides from appearing at hearings.

[ cheers ] ♪ you heard them. good morning, america. good morning to the "dancing with the stars" champs and finalists. they flew all night to join us. trophy, and they brought it with them here to times square. we cannot wait to talk to them all about their experience on "dancing with the stars." >> bananas for hannah. we're going to begin with the thanksgiving weather threat. as a record number of people prepare to travel for the holiday, two storms and a new wildfire are causing trouble this morning. take a look at the snow in colorado. hundreds of flights have been canceled, as millions get ready to fly. ginger tracking all the latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, george. dozens of states are under some sort of alert from california to new york including nebraska, chicago could have 60-mile-per-hour winds, look at colorado now, a blizzard warning was just put into effect. that will mean to you it's not

the snow but snow blowing so badly it could make it impossible to travel. that's on our map here. winds gusting to 40. denver could end up with 10 inches to 14 inches of snow and that's where we find our clayton sandell just south of denver. >> reporter: you can see, look at all this snow. this has all fallen in about the last six hours. this is interstate 25 behind me here. it was mostly abandoned. we're starting to see a few more cars. it's dangerous and snow packed. very dangerous. take a look at this -- we've gotten at least a foot of snow here, reports of up to 24 inches in the mountains and this could not be coming at a worst time for holiday travelers. . blizzard conditions have two major interstates shut down, i-70 in several places across the state. officials are warning people to stay off the road.

if they don't have to travel. stay off the roads because this snowstorm, ginger, is far from over. >> that's right, clayton. far from over and now going to impact more folks all the way to minneapolis. that's through the day today. into this evening, 6 inches to 9 inches of snow could fall in minneapolis with gusty winds to 35. chicago, could see 60-mile-per-hour gusts. you know what that will do to o'hare. it will make for a mess by tomorrow morning. and then severe storms from st. louis down to louisiana and mississippi. as if that wasn't enough, i've got another storm to tell you about. this could be worse, could be historic along oregon and northern california, 50 to 80-mile-per-hour gusts. it could bomb out. it will rapidly intensify through tonight into tomorrow. what it will also mean is mountain snowfall on the order of one to three feet. this doesn't stop there. southern california gets into this so flash flooding could be a possibility. even in the mountains around los angeles you could end up with three feet of snow, gusty winds to 40 miles per hour. speaking of the wind, you know the macy's day parade,

their threshold for flying the balloons is 35-mile-per-hour gusts. 37 right there on the map so it's going to be gusty in the northeast. anybody want to go to orlando? that looks nice, 81, and rain into the desert southwest. one more storm to tell you about. this is when you're trying to go home on the west coast, sunday into monday we are going to be watching this one for the intensity, but it looks like more mountain snow and heavy rain right at the airports. guys. >> i was waiting for one more thing. okay, as we heard, ginger, hundreds of flights have already been canceled as a record-breaking holiday travel week gets under way. more than 31 million people are set to take to the skies and david kerley is at dulles airport with more. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, michael. you can see folks are lined up ready to start their holiday travel and already the travel has meant flights cancellations, more than 500 flights in the country. 460 flights already canceled in denver and don't forget, denver is a transfer hub so that could

ripple through the system. so what does travel look like over the next couple of days? the good times and the bad times? well, today, 2.8 million americans expected to fly and then tomorrow we get very close to a record, and then watch the numbers dip dramatically, thanksgiving, less than 2 million flying. on friday, close to what is normal, a little more than 2 million, then saturday will be like today and sunday could be the busiest travel day ever in u.s. passenger history, 3.1 million folks expected to travel and, of course, as ginger said, the weather continues to be a concern throughout this part of the holiday, michael. >> big concern. david, and with that record number of travelers expected this thanksgiving, what about getting through security for everybody? >> reporter: yeah, it's kind of a problem and we've been kind of watching here today. you can see the tsa checkpoints at airports around the country like this one here at dulles airport say they've added officers and they are using

overtime. now, they've dealt with 2.8, 2.8 million but never 3.1 that will come on sunday. they say they're prepared. it's going to be a challenge, michael. >> all right, david, time will tell. thank you so much. robin. >> remember to take off the belt that would help when going through. we have that wildfire that erupted in santa barbara overnight scorching for than 3,000 acres forcing mandatory evacuations and will carr is on the scene for us there in california. good morning, will. >> reporter: and, robin, fire crews have been working relentlessly around the clock here in santa barbara county trying to jump on these flames. the winds are pushing those embers all across the area. one of the helicopters coming in the area right now. you can feel the heat of those flames on your skin. this is one of two fires burning in california right now, in what could be a season that lasts through the rest of the year. the kay fire scorching more than

3,000 acres overnight. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: panicked residents fleeing forced to drive-through a hellscape. those raining embers and terrifying flames shooting across evacuation routes. >> the last resident at the north end is evacuating. she just advised us that the main house on this property occupied by about 30 people with large horses. >> reporter: 50-mile-per-hour winds inching closer and closer to these homes. even as firehawk helicopters with infrared technology cut through the dark of night relentlessly attacking the fire, drop after drop. on the ground firefighters jumping on hotspots whipped around by santa barbara's notorious sundowner winds. >> the fire started up on top and it made a real quick run down the hill. the big thing is going to be the winds as they continue. the winds in this canyon have been going down canyon and turn around and come back up. it's been very erratic. >> reporter: this morning,

these neighborhoods will be smothered by smoke and darkness. the fire knocking out power to hundreds of customers. as fire crews continue to battle these flames, this fire right now is 0% contained. so smoke that's really hard to breathe at this point. fire crews are hoping to get some support from mother nature a little bit later today, we're expecting rain, with the rain comes the potential threat of mudslides. that's double-edged sword that california has been facing for years. george. >> boy, no relief at all. will, get inside. we go to washington and new developments in the impeachment showdown. in a setback for president trump, a federal judge has ruled that former white house counsel don mcgahn must testify saying presidents are not kings and calling the white house claim of absolute immunity fiction. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a serious blow to the white house's efforts to stonewall this impeachment investigation and we are now likely looking at a major showdown that could go all the way to the supreme court.

the federal judge delivering a blunt message ordering former white house counsel don mcgahn to testify in the impeachment inquiry saying, per the constitution, no one is above the law. the scathing ruling a win for house democrats faced with repeated stonewalling from the trump administration blocking testimony from top aides like mcgahn and former national security adviser john bolton. but now the judge saying presidents do not have the power to kneecap house investigations and that white house aides are not absolutely immune from cooperating with congress writing, quote, the primary takeaway from the past 250 years of recorded american history is that presidents are not kings. >> this is not just about this president. this is about upholding the rule of law. >> reporter: overnight, democrats claiming victory. >> what's good is the judge agreed with us. it's the law. it's as american as apple pie.

>> reporter: but the decision not expected to have an immediate impact on the impeachment inquiry. the justice department says it will appeal setting up a legal showdown that could go all the way to the supreme court. but this morning, the big question, what does the ruling mean for other potentially game-changing witnesses like bolton? bolton's lawyer has said his client would not testify unless a judge ruled he was legally allowed to defy white house demands. democrats argue, this does just that. sources tell abc news bolton's team is now reviewing the decision to determine if it impacts how they proceed and he has already made it clear, he knows a lot about president trump's pressure campaign on ukraine at the very center of the impeachment inquiry. so, even if these new witnesses emerge intel committee chair adam schiff says that he is laying out a time line and they are moving fast, he says, soon after thanksgiving democrats plan to deliver this report that will form the basis for these articles of impeachment, and if there was any question, george,

about which way they are leaning on this, schiff says his panel has uncovered, quote, massive amounts of evidence and corrupt intent by the president. >> yeah, that report is coming next week, cecilia, thanks very n karl.te e correspondent jon, let's start with that question about john bolton. nothing is stopping him from testified. he can volunteer to testify. will he use the new court case as cover? >> reporter: of course, this case is about don mcgahn. it is not about john bolton. but, george, a source close to bolton tells us that he is looking at whether or not this would apply to his case as well, of course, the judge wrote it in a very broad way and we know that bolton wants to talk. i think this brings him a step closer to talking to congress but, george, it also looks like bolton is likely to wait the results of the administration's appeal on this case before making a decision on that so i wouldn't look for him to testify immediately. >> right, that could take weeks or months. meantime, big decision yesterday from the supreme court on president trump's taxes. they've stayed the subpoena from

the house, two big cases on the president's tax returns to be indicted or at least considered by the court in the next week or so. >> reporter:ea na , th itempory admist becau ty rered tovhoax immediately, he doesn't have to do that. the supreme court has made it clear if they take up this case a decision could come down in june. the president could forced to turn over his tax returns right in the middle of the presidential campaign. >> the courts were busy yesterday. another ruling that documents related to this ukraine inquiry will come out in time for impeachment. >> reporter: this is a big deal. they have ordered them to turn over 200 pages of documents on withholding aid to ukraine. this would be the first time we have seen the public documents. this is a big development.

>> jon karl, thanks very much. robin. now to the growing firestorm over that navy s.e.a.l. convicted of misconduct on the battlefield but defended by president trump. now, the navy secretary fired in the fallout is responding. senior national correspondent terry moran has more. >> reporter: former secretary of the navy richard v. spencer is condemning the president of the united states saying donald trump's actions send a dangerous message to the troops. >> that you can get away with things. we have to have good order and discipline. it's the backbone of what we do. >> reporter: spencer's firing was part of the fallout of a navy s.e.a.l.'s war crimes case, that s.e.a.l., eddie gallagher was acquitted of stabbing to death a teenager isis captive in 2017 but he was found guilty of posing inappropriately with the corpse. the navy convened a review board to determine if gallagher could keep his trident pin and retire with that designation. >> somebody has their back and it's called the president of the u.s., okay?

>> reporter: president trump supported gallagher and issued an order allowing for gallagher to keep his pin. >> with eddie gallagher you know that story very well. they wanted to take his pin away and i said, no, you're not going to take it away. he was a great fighter. we're going to protect our warfighters. >> reporter: spencer hit back at the president. >> i don't think he really understands the full definition of a war fighter. war fighter is a profession of arms and a profession of arms has standards that they have to be held to and they hold themselves too. >> reporter: defense secretary mark esper says spencer was forced to resign for violating his chain of command by trying to make a deal directly with the white house not to intervene in this case. spencer says the president's involvement goes against the values of the u.s. navy. >> what do i stand for as secretary of the navy? good order and discipline of the united states navy. that's a prime tenet. this, in fact, erodes that. >> reporter: this morning, the president is weighing in again on twitter saying, i will always protect our great war fighters. i've got your backs. the fallout from all this is apparently split opinion in the military which has always prided

itself on staying out of politics but in these times that's getting harder and harder, michael. >> i agree with you on that, terry, thank you so much. now to that chaos at a mall in california overnight. gunfire breaking out sending shoppers fleeing and hiding. at least two people were injured. abc's eva pilgrim has the story. >> reporter: overnight, a horrifying scene unfolding as shoppers in this bakersfield's mall flee from erupting gunshots. a witness capturing the terrifying moment on tape as shoppers hid in the back of a store. >> what's going through my mind is what would happen next, am i going to die, you know, it's pretty crazy. >> reporter: sounds of screaming and yelling filling the air, people racing away from this food court. two males hit suffering from nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds. >> we heard the shots ring out. there was at least four to five shots. after that we all ran to the back of the store and then they -- we locked down the gate. >> shooting inside the mall

anywhere from 5 to 15 shots heard. >> reporter: police putting the mall on lockdown. >> everybody started evacuating. there were a couple of kids that got left behind and i started crying and in that moment i just knew i needed to evacuate them as quick as possible. >> reporter: this morning, a manhunt under way as cops search for the suspect who pulled the trigger. and police in california are hopeful that those witnesses in the food court as well as the public will be able to track that shooter down. guys. >> glad everybody will be okay. all right, thank you, eva. also this morning, take a look at this close call in the water. surfers trying to catch a wave but this time the wave nearly caught the surfer. you see the surfer there and the jet ski rides in to pick him up on the portuguese coast. as he hooks to the jet ski, they are engulfed by that massive 50-foot wave bearing down. the driver hits the gas pulling the surfer along and they came

killing more than a dozen people, injuring hundreds. rescue operations are under way at this hour. and take a look, a blow-out on monday night football. the ravens quarterback lamar jackson throwing five incredible touchdowns beating the rams, 45-6, and a lot of people say he can only run. he's not that great of a passer but he proved them all wrong week in and week out. congratulations to the ravens. they look good. >> they do. they do. thank you, michael. now to that verdict that could have big implications for anyone texting while driving. a new jersey woman convicted of vehicular homicide after she rear-ended a car which then hit a pedestrian. prosecutors say she was answering a text message at the time. amy is here with much more on this. good morning. >> good morning, robin. prosecutors are calling this a landmark decision in distracted driving. alexandra mansonet is facing up to ten years behind bars after being convicted of second degree vehicular homicide. according to prosecutors, 50-year-old alexandra mansonet was behind the wheels of her mercedes-benz texting a

relative, when her car rear-ended another car and that car struck pedestrian yuwen wang in the crosswalk and died five days later. moments before mansonet received a text about dinner options. the text read, cuban, american or mexican. pick one. in court prosecutors told the jury they believe mansonet was in the process of responding mexican but only managed to type the letters m-e when the crash occurred. at her trial, mansonet said she doesn't remember typing those letters. instead saying she looked down just before the crash to adjust the defroster. >> i looked down to press the defroster, i look up, and the car was there. the car was right in front of me soy i -- i hit the car. >> reporter: she says she didn't realize that anyone was hurt. >> i was like an ambulance? why? you know. and he says, well, there was a pedestrian that was hit.

>> reporter: prosecutors hope that this case will serve as a warning. >> this unfortunately resulted in somebody losing a life and a family who loved her that won't see her anymore. >> reporter: now, the judge has scheduled mansonet's sentencing for january 31st. she'll remain free on her own recognizance until then. we were talking while the piece was running and if this doesn't get your attention, what will? distracted driving can cause death. >> i know. when you're driving and look over and you see somebody that is texting or on their phone while you're on the highway or something, you're like, why, why? thank you, amy. >> thank you. and now to new details on the headline-making performance from selena gomez as sunday's american music awards. this morning, we're learning the star may have suffered a panic attack just before taking the stage. paula faris is here with the story. good morning, paula. >> good morning, michael. this was her first performance in two years and the panic attack reportedly happened just

what some considered was a shaky start, taylor swift was seen rocking out to gomez's second song "look at me now" and gomez returning the favor during swift's performance. later gomez posting on instagram, feels good to be back. she took several years off to focus on her health and yes, this is her first music in four years but anxiety doesn't disappear. in fact, she says her lupus amplifies her anxiety. what happened to her makes her human. as you pointed out she's hoping the show, the first time she's performed in two years and it can happen to all of us. >> you get nervous. >> you really do. >> thank you, paula. we have new details on that massive robbery in germany. police have released this surveillance video showing the thieves smashing into a museum making off with priceless jewels, james longman is in dresden with what may be the biggest height in history. >> reporter: this was an extraordinary raid. take a look. the thieves gained entry through one of these windows on the

ground floor. the whole thing was over in just a matter of minutes and they made away with priceless treasures. german newspapers call it the greatest museum heist since world war ii. priceless artifacts, pearls, broaches, diamond-encrusted swords dating back to the 1700s, all swiped in minutes out of one of europe's oldest museums. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: watch as two thieves make their way over to glass cases housing the jewels. flashlights dart around the room as their ax smashes through the glass. >> they tried to get the things with a lot of diamonds on there. >> you think they were aiming for the diamonds. >> they are aiming, as far as i could see, they were aiming for the diamonds. >> reporter: the heist meticulously planned. police caught this electrical box where they think the suspects sparked a fire knocking out the lights around the museum. you can see behind me the small triangle in the grill that the thieves cut out and slipped through to get inside

and entered through a smashed window and headed straight for the jewels. security guards spotted them on ctv but the suspects were already gone. now, they're looking for two suspects but police say there could well be more. a car was found nearby, possibly their getaway car. that's being investigated. but this is really a race against time because if these jewels are cut up and sold, it would be far harder to trace them. george. >> you cannot sell them as is. thanks very much. coming up, as black friday approaches how to dramatically reduce your holiday bills. come on back.

the fahd -- fda is is is is is people won't think it can hurt them. >> the fda is not saying that they don't believe that cannabis or cbd products have no benefit, it's actually for that reason that they're issuing these safety concerns because like anything, this is a basic tenet of medicine and pharmacology. if something has benefit, you must consider the medical risks as well. so in studying the only fda approved drug that's used to treat epilepsy containing cbd they have found there are some risks and that involves potential for acute liver toxicity, that it can have interactions with over-the-counter herbs or other supplements and particularly there could be male reproductive health concerns with a developing fetus. always have to weigh the risks whenever you talk about proposed benefit. >> what do they need to know. >> i want to be clear. i do believe that cannabis and cbd will have a therapeutic role. what that is is to be

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. at least one high school principal is using older kids who never vaped to encourage younger ones not to do it either. as you're about to see the plan appears to be working. >> that definitely looks like a highlighter. >> reporter: at arrowhead, the fight against the youth vaping epidemic is all about stopping it before it starts. >> we notice our freshmen, mostly boys were doing it and can came quickly to the conclusion they were addicted to it and that they had started it probably like in middle school. it looks like a usb drive. this is this is a juul. >> reporter: the principal shows parents the camouflaged vaping items confiscated at his school on a regular basis. >> at the look like footballs. >> some may recognize them. >> reporter: the principal taking a very different approach deploying groups of his high school students trained in prevention education and who have never vaped to middle schools in his district.

vaping they didn't know the harmful effects. >> student-to-student prevention seeming to become a must as the fight against it continues. >> if it comes from a person who knows you, i think it should hit home. i hope it would hit home because i don't want anyone to die from this. >> reporter: nearly 2300 cases of lung injuries from vaping have been reported to the cdc. about 15% of them were kids under 18. that's why it's so important to have these conversations and figure out how to connect with these younger kid. >> peers listen to peers. kids listen to kids before they listen to their parents or adults. it's just how it works. thanks for that. we go to george. >> we have a look at the skyrocketing cost of college putting such a burden on so many students and families, some hit $100,000 a in tuition alone and rebecca jarvis is back with advice for families facing these bills. hey, rebecca. >> reporter: it's become outrageously expensive to go to college and according to sally may eight in ten families make decisions about where their child will go to college based

on money rather than academics. how do you lower the price tag on that dream school? >> reporter: this morning, the student debt crisis. $1.6 trillion in outstanding loans owed by more than 43 million americans. nearly 9 million in default. but expert and author in "the debt-free degree" says you can go to college debt-free. >> i personally recommend you use scholarships, grants, or even maybe you have assistance from your parents from parents using a 529 or educational savings account. >> reporter: the average college student graduating with more than $30,000 of debt. >> there are many young people who have over a million dollars in student loans. i met several couples not having children because they're $400,000 just in student loan debt or the he says it's hard work but keep in mind -- >> over a billion dollars worth of scholarships go to waste

every single year. >> reporter: his biggest piece of advice -- you. > need to sit down and actually do a budget. from there you choose a college within that bracket. >> reporter: take that time on the front end. it will pay off in the long term and one thing everyone should do is fill out the fafsa forms for federal student aid. first come first serve and start accepting applications in october and as for those scholarship, it's good to apply for the big well-known ones. those are more competitive so look for the smaller local specific scholarships, apply for a number of those, george, your odds are so much better to get some of those smaller more local one. >> how do you find them. >> talk to friends and family. this is an important thingment you can talk to your church, synagogue, in sports if you're playing sports talk to your coaches. a couple of great resources for people to check out, fastweb.com. collegeboard.org and scholarship.com. these are all free places to go and look for scholarship and i cannot underline that enough. a scholarship should not cost

of sherry and garlic. that's going to really ramp up the flavor and then i'm going to add our classic cream of mushroom. >> really you were saying this is a hack for thanksgiving because this does kind of roux or a million other words. >> it saves you some labor. it saves you some time. it saves you some consistency and cost as well, right? so i'll add some milk to the cream of mushroom with the mushrooms, garlic and sherry in there and i've already blanched my green beans. you just -- they're cooked till they're bright green, super, super tender and i like to say squeaky, when you bite them they squeak a little bit. you know what i'm talking about. add them to our cream of mushroom mixture. i toss that and over here you can see our finished version so it's a little lighter, fresh. the classic green bean casserole shows up and maybe my 2.0 version as well. we're moving on to a savory sausage and sourdough bread pudding. >> what? >> which takes care of the

controversy of is it stuffing, is it dressing? it's bread pudding. >> call it bread pudding. i'll put you to work. can you whisk in with those egg yolks, add a little bit of campbell's cream of chicken and will add flavor. >> this is a morning of dish? >> you could do it the night before if you want. we'll add milk. mix it in and add a little bit of this parmesan. >> it gives it the punch. >> in mine i have the sausage, the mirepoix, which is carrots, celery and onions and i'll herbs synonymous with thanksgiving, sage, parsley and thyme. >> we have to do it quickly. >> custard goes right into here. >> this is extra creamy by the way. campbell's is now creamier. >> can you believe it?
