and that breaking news, rain, wind, the lightening and snow. the biggest storm in six months sweeping through the bay area causing flooding, black outs and spin outs. also breaking a power outage plunges oakland international airport into darkness. thousands of passengers left wondering what's next. >> reporter: you can see right behind me still some chaos here at baggage claim and right down this hall i just checked out the check in lines and that is kier. so this board right here is what you don't want to be seeing on the busiest weekend of the canceled, canceled, canceled. my last count a dozen. we spoke to some passengers when the lights went out. >> the lights have come on and off about four or five times so

far. so feels like they're trying to work through some flipping switches and make something work. >> reporter: this was the scene around 6:00 p.m. when power went out, tsa working in the dark, long lines. this was the runway passengers tweeting photos of the darkness. this was the scene at the airport at around 9:00 p.m. power restored but still chaos. passengers waiting in long lines, getting different directions from airport security and airline staff, many confused about the status of their flights. >> we've been waiting here since about 6:00. so a little after 6:00 she's been coming from san diego and the flight was delayed, so just hanging out here with the rest of humanity. >> i'm getting conflicting information. the board says different things and i'm getting texted. i don't know if my flight is delayed or canceled. >> i'm just in line. my flight got delayed two hours. i'm hoping i get to fly out

tonight, but looking at this line i don't even know if i'll get through tsa by then. >> i was about to check my bag in and power went out. so they were about halfway done putting my bag in the thing. >> are you going to make your flight? >> we'll see. i hope so. >> reporter: and i did speak to oakland airport officials. they said flight arrivals continued during the outage, however some departures are delayed. they're still trying to figure out what caused the power outage. make sure to check on the website if your flight has been canceled. now back to the newsroom. >> thank you. and san francisco's airport wasn't spared from rain related issues. heres a live look now from sfo. that cuts the number of arriving planes in half. there are delays of up to 90 minutes. now here's a look at the conditions at prompted flight delays. rain came down in sheets tonight

in san francisco. some drivers near 101 in the area said at one point the rain was so heavy they pulled over and let the rain pass. this is live outage map from pg&e showing the areas now in the dark due to the weather. at last check more than 17,000 customers were impacted. >> abc 7 news was at interstate 280 and ocean avenue tonight where there was a big back up in the southbound direction because of flooding. there was still quite a mess to cleanup as you can see. >> and here's a live look outside right now at the golden gate bridge. roads are still slick. earlier the road and traffic were so bad in san francisco that cable cars were taken out of service. they are back now, though. so what can we expect for the rest of your night? >> it has gotten active again. take a look at live doppler 7. this is in the east bay.

as you were both talking lightening develops. so thunderstorms moving from san francisco into east bay. san leandro street. we're going to track this cell for you. it is heading towards castro valley and we've had reports of hail around parts of the bay area, even some high elevation snow, geysers road seeing a mix of rain and snow. as you take a look here looping this back, some downpours tonight moving across the bay area with those thunderstorms. numerous storm reports across the region. we've had at least 36 reports of storm damage tonight, level 1, showers, thunder chance, gusty winds. and as you take a look here winds are gusting to 39. a wind advisory until 4:00 a.m. we could still see some power outages and down trees. we do have a high surf advisory

in effect until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. point arena the swellsrectomy now up to 30 feet. lower level flooding not out of the -- >> amanda del castillo with a look at the conditions in the south bay. >> reporter: in the last few hours showers have been on and off here in downtown san jose, but right now no we prepared for this storm. i may have overdone it with snow bib but i have my boots here and extra layers. other people weren't so lucky. at the height of tuesday's storm the south bay drenched, hoods pulled tightly. still we met many caught unprepared. you don't seem to have a water resistant jacket on. were you prepared for this?

>> i really wasn't. >> reporter: abc 7 news warned viewers about the storm far in advance. the evening commute, soaked. conditions forcing drivers to put the focus on safety. >> the oil on the roads very slick, so you have to take care and slow down a little bit. >> it's torture. when it's really wet there are accidents that happen so everyone's driving a lot more cautiously. >> off the slick roads and on downtown san jose streets we spotted a few hours that actually came prepared. people bundled up as temperatures dipped near 50 degrees. >> i was not prepared so i came with a sweater, jacket, glove, scarf, beanie. >> i didn't expect it to be this cold. everyone was saying the temperatures are going to drop and get wet and this actually took me by surprise. >> more rain is expected wednesday and thursday and should return for the weekend.

in downtown san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc >> it didn't take long for the rain to drench parts of the south bay and were left in the dark again for about an hour. >> i didn't think we were going to get shutoff so soon after the other inconvenience, so i think everybody's getting a little frustrated. >> people on the road in the north bay got a quick lesson on driving in the rain. they were taking it slow. >> it took me a long time to get there. >> i prefer this than the fires so i think we should count our blessings.

a largeu eucalyptus tree cae crashing down just missing a house. police say the trunk is at least 4 feet in diameter. it's not exactly the nicest of nights in pacifica unless you like howling winds and water being blown everywhere. abc 7 news was at the pier where the water was being kicked up making for a fairly dramatic picture. we did not see anyone checking out the waves. slow going on interstate 80 and highway 50. chains are required once you reach trucky. all lanes are open right now. they had closed in both directions earlier because a number of crashes between trucky and alta. and this is what it's like tonight in lake tahoe. can't see much of it. maybe some blowing snow there under the lights. and the visibility is near 0 as you can tell. some places could see up to 4 feet of snow and the winds could gust as high as 85 miles per hour.

there. >> whoever bails out is like you lose. >> in addition to playing on the varsity basketball team laura was president of drew's black student union. ten students of color out of about 300 enrolled at the school. the black students were stunned by two snap chat posts that have been distributed. a girl from the school in what they described in blackface and n word and her name. the second one says to all the people mad from that post, my n' word, i simply do not care. >> it was frustrating because it made a lot of the kids in my bsu feel really unsafe and not comfortable being around those students anymore. >> laura bandy tells me her anger turned to fear after she complained to school administration she posted thick ticktock video in which wrote when everything's been pretty chill and a white student reposted the video adding the words snitches going to get stitches fr, meaning for real.

>> she was targeted oh, you're a snitch. other people in the hallway telling her you're a snitch. >> i end up alerting police to this. >> and you filed a report? >> i did. i'm afraid for my daughter's safety at this point. >> they received bandy's complaint and an officer contacted school administrators who stated they were aware of the incidents had a taken steps to address the situation. drew's head of school refused to be interviewed on camera, but he interviewed me the social media posts were totally unacceptable. according to both our stated values on formal policies and our administration took immediate corrective steps both with the students involved and our school community as a woel. two weeks ago the school held an assembly on the issue of race, and asked laura to address the student body but at the last moment they told her she couldn't speak. if you could get one message across to your classmates, what would the message be?

>> that i don't tolerate racism any type of disrespect and i'm going to continue to stand up and i would love it if they stood with me as well. >> laurel is the most courageous young woman i've met in a long time. >> she coached at drew's school the bast three years, but she tells me she just quit her job there because of how she feels how they protected the white students and what she says an administrator told her. >> you have to think about their future. we don't want to go around excelling students because they have to fill out college applications, they have to disclose why they were suspended. >> i took this information to the historic third baptist church and pastor amos brown. >> you have to admit you have a problem. stop sweeping it under the rug and in a civil, rational sensible way call that student body together and say this will

not be tolerated here. >> after our interview i watched as dr. brown called drew's school and demanded action. >> because this is serious for students to be involved and treating people wrongly because they're black. >> and it looks like it's working. amos brown now tells me drew school is exploring how to address these issues with the help of the naacp. one final note, i reached the parents of those three students who sent the post and they all want to remain anonymous, but one father sent me a message apologizing for what he says is an inappropriate post. >> dan, thank you so much. as we move on look in your lower left corner. this is video of a lightening strike at 11:04 not too long ago from our east bay hills camera. we've looped the video.

viewers have seen a couple of lightening strikes in our area just in the last half-hour or so. >> sandhya? >> let's take a look at that lightening on live doppler 7. it happened at the top of our broadcast here. as we take a look here and move from san francisco into the east bay. as we get you into street level radar here the heaviest rain is falling right around hayward, hayward boulevard you will notice heading in towards the castro valley area in towards canyon road. we're going to track this cell so don't be surprised if you see lightening, hear thunder. remember when thunder roars, head indoors. there has been hail accompanying this storm. and we're seeing mixed precipitation, rain and snow from mt. diablo. as we get you down to street level radar and we are seeing some moderate to heavy rain. well, this storm has delivered

no doubt about it, about an inch an a half, almost an inch san francisco, santa rosa, oakland airport. san jose,.47 so an even distribution of rain. i do want to show you something interesting. this storm really intensified. it set an all-time low pressure record for california. so we've been talking about this with you all day today. chain controls right now going up to the sierra. mountains are under a winter storm warning. it is really tough to get up there. the warning until 7:00 p.m. thursday about 1,500 feet accumulating snow. up to the highest peaks we're talking about 4'06" snow.

we're still seeing gusty winds. on our storm impact scale this is now a one. snow over the highest peaks, gusty winds and rough and dangerous surf. tomorrow morning when you get going at 5:00 a.m., there will still be showers around, some snow showers at the higher elevation, so prepare accordingly, allow extra time and even at lunchtime still going to be seeing those showers. additional rainfall totals anywhere from a few hundredths to about 0.4 of an inch. speaking of tomorrow, chill in the air, low 30s to upper 40s, very cold. still chilly for the afternoon. you're looking at low 40s to the mid-50s, so make sure you have the jacket ready as well. accuweather seven day forecast 1 for tomorrow, showers and snow. thanksgiving a few lingering showers, it's a 1.

abc 7 news was in san jose tonight as the 49ers cooked u 4s thanksgiving dinner. martha's kitchen has been helping feed the hungry in the south bay for years. the 49ers star says this is something haz done since he was a child. >> thanksgiving has always had a special place in my heart. even when i was a kid my dad would take me to a homeless shelter and having a chance to have my entire family out here
