lakes. abc's clayton sandell reports on the mess the storms have left behind. >> reporter: drivers packing for thanksgiving trips are finding roadways packed with treacherous snow and ice. this van trying to pass a snowplow lost control on i-80 in nebraska, spinning into the median. this semi overturned near grand island. on interstate 70 west of denver, a snowy mountain crash claimed at least one life. not far away, a rock slide closed part of a major highway for hours. on colorado's eastern plains, whiteout blizzard conditions brought another i-70 shutdown. >> woke and up thought i'd take a chance. no dice, it's just too dicey. thank god they closed the roads. >> reporter: nearly a foot of snow dumped into the denver area. motorists fighting losing battles against spinning tires. some giving up, driving the wrong way to escape. firefighters race to keep up with countless crashes.

luckily no one hurt in this collision. and in colorado springs -- >> apparently there's just snow all over the place, nobody's going anywhere. >> reporter: denver airport, an urgent effort to clear runways. 550 canceled flights since monday. an overnight stay for over 1,100 stranded travelers. abc's alex perez is ahead of the storm in minneapolis. airport officials in minneapolis are bracing for more delays and more cancelations. crews will be out all night clearing runways. nearly 3 million passengers nationwide will fly on wednesday alone. a second storm now slamming oregon with hurricane-force wind gusts and heavy snow. and this is one of the lingering travel headaches here. there are a few cars sneaking through, but officially interstate 70 is shut down from just east of denver all the way to the kansas border, 150 miles away. clayton sandell, abc news, aurora, colorado.

northern iowa. we've got another powerhouse of a storm dropping in along the west coast of the u.s. bringing rain, snow, and wind here as well. 1 to 3 feet of snow into the sierra as well as the southern cascades. that's going to lead to snow and ice across parts of southern plains as well from northern texas into the panhandle of oklahoma as well into the northeast. not many improvements for our thanksgiving holiday. we could have gusts up to 50 miles per hour impacting our parade. kenneth, janai? >> all right, our thanks to adam. turning to the latest developments in the impeachment investigation, sources telling "the new york times" that president trump was told about the whistle-blower complaint that sparked the inquiry before he released the aid to ukraine. >> last night the president continued to rail against the impeachment probe at a rally in florida, denouncing it as quote bull expletive, prompting the crowd to chant it and do the same. democrats are undeterred. the house judiciary committee plans to hold its first impeachment hearing a week from today.

president trump and his legal team apparently are invited to attend. >> as abc's jonathan karl reports, the announcement came as the president took questions about rudy giuliani's involvement in the ukraine scandal. >> reporter: president trump is now suggesting he didn't really know what his personal lawyer, rudy giuliani, was doing in ukraine. >> what was rudy giuliani doing in ukraine on your behalf? >> you have to ask that to rudy. but rudy -- i don't really know -- i know he was going to go to ukraine, and i think he canceled a trip. rudy has other clients other than me. >> reporter: but in the transcript of the president's july 25th phone call with ukrainian president zelensky, the president repeatedly told the ukrainian leader to talk to giuliani. "mr. giuliani is a highly respected man and i would like him to call you, rudy very much knows what's happening and he is a very capable guy, if you could speak to him that would be great." the president's point man on ukraine, ambassador gordon sondland, testified the

♪ we are back with this amazing rescue in southern michigan. this is body cam that captures a sheriff's deputy pulling a man from a burning van near lansing. deputy chris burton sprays that vehicle with a fire extinguisher, then he yanks open the door, finds the driver inside, pulls him out by his arm. both were treated for smoke inhalation. indirectly work they do. authorities outside of chicago have arrested a school bus driver after she was caught on surveillance video apparently drinking behind the wheel. >> it happened during one of her routes with as many as 32 schoolchildren on board. here's abc's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: police in aurora, illinois, releasing this video of a school bus driver who

appears to be buying beer while picking up students. >> an observant convenience store clerk called and told them they just sold beer to a woman and watched her get onto a school bus and drive away. >> reporter: police say 44-year-old michelle passley is then seen back on the bus driving and drinking from two beer cans as she picks up elementary schoolkids on her morning route. >> 32 students were observed on the bus while the driver was drinking from two beer cans. >> reporter: passley was fired from the school bus company that's contracted by the school district and then arrested. it comes just two weeks after another school bus driver in oregon was arrested after careening off the road into a ditch with 10 children on board. >> i am so sorry! >> reporter: that driver given a citation for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. as for this latest incident in illinois, that driver is charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the life of a child. stephanie ramos, abc news, new
