wind gusts ripping this roof off a building in crescent city scattering debris everywhere. ithh least four tornadoes reported. one destroying this mobile home park in louisiana. this garage door ripped right off. scattered wooden debris and remains of furniture littered across the ground. this tree yanked right from its roots. throughout the country, winter's fury causing chaos on the roads as snow, rain and fierce winds combine to form treacherous driving conditions. in utah, this trooper seen here on a police dash cam assisting a crash scene when suddenly another vehicle comes crashing towards him after losing control on the icy road. the trooper hopping a barrier to avoid the collision. in nebraska, icy roadways leading this semi-truck to lose control flipping onto its side while an suv slipped into a

ditch on the side of the road. and at least a foot of snow in parts of minnesota forced cars off the road. and you can see the wind blowing the snow around. here's the good news for minneapolis. this storm is moving quickly and is expected to be out of the area by this afternoon. michael. >> all right, thank you, alex. dangerous conditions out there right now. that triple storm threat is on the move and ginger has the very latest on the path and how the timing will affect your travel. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, michael. you know it's bad when the map looks like this behind me and you're about to have the epic travel day. los angeles, tucson x not getting out of it this year. utah, all the way over to iowa, wisconsin, nashville and western, say pittsburgh, western pennsylvania, you're ending up with wind alerts. let me detail it for you. we were just talking about minneapolis, that's out of there by the afternoon. but with more than seven inches in some places, chicago has gusts to 60 miles per hour throughout today.

you know that's going to impact flights at ohear. even with the gusts that make it to thanksgiving day itself here in the northeast we'll watch that. i'll be at the philly parade and very breezy if not downright windy. then, look at this. storm number two, came on shore last night, potentially making history because this thing bombed out. it dropped so quickly in pressure that we could see an all-time record low pressure in california. that's unbelievable. 34-foot waves were recorded. 106-mile-per-hour winds and let me take you through where this is going to go next and why i'm concerned this morning. santa barbara already seeing a quarter inch or more of rainfall rates. you've got burn scars there. you're going to have mudslides. you're going to end up on the grapevine turning that into snow. interstate 5 closed in parts of northern california. the west coast doesn't get away from it. cecilia, by friday oklahoma city to dallas, along i-35, could see severe storms. >> thank you. the storms are creating a

travel nightmare during what is expected to be a record-breaking holiday air travel. hundreds of flights already canceled in colorado, and overnight, that power outage at oakland airport causing delays there. take a live look at all of the planes in the air right now. a lot of them out there. david kerley is at george bush intercontinental airport in houston. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. watching some of the operations united here in houston. more on that in a moment. but let's talk about those cancellations. you mentioned oakland, the power is back on there. handful of flights were cancelled. but already this morning, we have nearly 100 flights canceled in the united states and with that this is going to be a very busy day. look at how it works the next couple of days, it slows down thanksgiving and friday. saturday it picks up again. sunday, the buzziest travel day ever in u.s. history is possible. 3.1 million passengers according

to airlines for america to travel on sunday. one airline official told me that's, quote, potentially a meat grinder. cecilia. >> sounds like it definitely will be. there's new technology out there that airports are using that could save passengers some time. >> reporter: united hopes it saves time for you the passenger getting to the gate and getting off the gate. that means it could save the airlines some money. why? the airlines control the gates from a tower, but there's nobody in the towers this morning. they're here. this is united's first-ever -- first in the world they say -- virtual ramp tower. it will save money because have both of their towers the south and the knot together. these are called digital windows they're looking through and seeing what's happening on the ramp and this technology is pretty remarkable. it's 14 cameras so they can see what's happening down on the tower, on the ramp rather,

3 1/2 times worse than usual. kabc chopper reporter is high above with how things are looking. >> good morning from los angeles now. you battle traffic in l.a. before. on a wednesday morning and afternoon, when the sun is out before all a holiday it's tough. really tough on our roadways. . now we're looking at a big storm moving into los angeles, we're looking at gridlock, the storm coming in is going to be a cold front it could shut down the 5 and 15, which could make travel in and out of los angeles tough. they're expecting this afternoon, between 5:00 and 7:00 to be the worst of the traffic conditions. get this, it will take as much as four times as long for the same commute. 3.7 million passengers traveling by car 35 miles or more nap's just incredible.

some 230,000 people going through l.a.x. today. and 3.2 million over this it's going to be tough, lot of moving parts in los angeles. but today they're going to be moving slowly. >> skolt, thank you. michael. as we've heard the strong winds from those storms could also affect the thanksgiving parade here in new york city. if the gusts get too fierce those balloons will be grounded. gio benitez is along the parade route here in new york with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning to you. yeah, those balloons are going to be brought to this spot later today but as you said it's just not clear if they're going to fly at all. and that's because these giant balloons cannot fly if sustained winds exceed 23 miles per hour or if those gusts are stronger than 34 miles per hour. there is a chance they may be grounded. now, we saw the dangers of high winds during the parade back in 1997. that iconic cat in the hat balloon got caught up in the wind gust. it blew into a lamppost injuring four people. one woman was in a coma for a

month. so it's very, very serious. so the nypd, they're going to be out with special wind devices and they're going to be making what they call a game day decision right before the parade whether to fly the balloons or how high they will fly. michael. >> i know a lot of people are looking forward to the balloons but better safe than sorry, gio. thank you so much. >> you're right about that, michael. now to that breaking news in texas. multiple explosions rocking a chemical plant blowing out doors on nearby homes forcing mandatory evacuations. marcus moore has the latest for us. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: well, robin, good morning. that mandatory evacuation order still in effect this morning for the area immediately around the explosion site as that fire continues to burn. overnight, a massive explosion at this chemical plant in port neches, texas, lighting up the night sky. powerful enough to blow out windows in hopes several miles away. >> my dining room ceiling

crashed down. >> reporter: the plant, which is located about an hour and a half from houston, produces chemical and petroleum-based products and has 125 employees. >> i hope that everybody inside the plant is okay. right now that's a big concern. >> reporter: the first call was received at 1:00 this morning. >> pretty much in bed but it came in two waves. the first one we heard -- you saw the light flash. i mean, you saw the light and you felt the house rattle. and it sounded like thunder in the distance but by a second or two later like a shock wave sort of hit the house and my house, it was pretty loud. it was very loud. mainly because the front door blew in and the door frame blew out. >> reporter: mike tobias works for the local school. he was ordered to evacuate. >> so at that point i thought the house was coming down and first instinct was grab the kids. we needed to get out of the house.

caused that massive explosion and fire. cecilia. >> frightening scene. thank you. we go to washington where democrats announced their first public impeachment hearings set to take place days from now and this as president trump in a new is now trying to distance himself from his personal attorney, rudy giuliani. mary bruce is at the white house with the very latest on all this. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. rudy giuliani in his campaign to pressure ukraine has been at the center and the president has called him a great corruption fighter but now the president says he doesn't know what giuliani was doing in ukraine and he didn't send him there on his behalf. this morning, president trump is trying to distance himself from his personal lawyer, rudy giuliani, telling bill o'reilly he didn't know what giuliani was up to in ukraine. >> what was rudy giuliani doing in ukraine on your behalf? >> well, you have to ask that to rudy but rudy -- i don't even know. >> so you didn't direct him to go to ukraine to do anything.

>> no, i didn't direct him. but he is a warrior. rudy's a warrior. >> reporter: but the president himself repeatedly mentioned giuliani in the july phone call that sparked this impeachment inquiry telling the ukrainian n him to call you. rudy very much knows what's happening and he is a very capable guy. if you could speak to him, that would be great. the president's point man in ukraine, the eu ambassador, gordon sondland, told congress if they wanted to get anything done in ukraine, they had to, quote, talk to rudy. >> i followed the directions of the president. we worked with mr. giuliani because the president directed us to do so. >> reporter: giuliani has laughed off suggestions that the president will try to make him the fall guy for ukraine. >> i have seen things written like he's going to throw me under the bus. when i see that, he didn't but i have insurance. >> reporter: a new report raising questions about what the president knew when he lifted the hold on nearly $400 million in military aid to ukraine. the paper reports trump had already been briefed on the

whistle-blower report accusing him of wrongdoing when he decided to release the funding but it's unclear how much detail the president knew about the complaint. now, this all comes as the impeachment inquiry is entering the next phase, the judiciary committee has now announced its wednesday, and, cecilia, unlike the previous hearings, this time the president and his lawyers have the right to attend. we have just heard back from the white house and this morning they say the president is considering his options. >> we'll see what happens with that one. mary, in the meantime, we're learning that two white house budget officials, career officials resigned over this controversy to freeze aid on ukraine. >> reporter: yeah, a career budget employee testified to congressional investigators that two officials resigned in part over their concerns about this freeze on that critical military aid to ukraine and that they were very frustrated with not understanding why that aid was being withheld. cecilia. >> okay, mary bruce at the white house, thank you. michael.

>> thank you, cecilia. now to that stunning surveillance video. a school bus driver arrested after she appears to drink beer while driving her morning route. diane macedo has the story. >> reporter: this morning, outrage after police say a school bus driver was caught on camera drinking from a beer can on her morning route. authorities in aurora, illinois, say this new surveillance video shows the driver buying beer at a local convenience school. >> an observant convenience store clerk called the school district 131 and told them they just sold beer to a woman and then watched her get onto a school bus and drive away. >> reporter: back on the bus authorities say the driver 44-year-old michelle passley put the beer in a paper bag and started drinking from behind the wheel, all while picking up elementary schoolchildren. >> that's absolutely brazen. we have an absolute zero tolerance. for this when you place children in danger. >> reporter: none of the 32 children on board were harmed. passley was fired from the bus company and then arrested. >> michelle passley was arrested and charged with two class a misdemeanors of endangering the life and health of a child. >> reporter: this comes just two weeks after another school bus

driver in oregon was taken into custody. that driver lost control of the bus with ten children on board. slamming into a ditch. >> i am so sorry. >> reporter: he was arrested and given a citation for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. now, back in aurora, passley was released on $100,000 bond but so many grateful that store clerk saw something and said something. >> yes, that's so key. thank you, diane. we'll turn to that upset in hoops. duke going for the win, clock winding down in o.t. against unranked stephen f. austin, but they lost the ball and going the other way, the lumberjacks, that's nathan bane at the buzzer. at the buzzer beating the number one team in the country. first time the blue devils have lo00st at 0. that's a 150-game winning streak snapped. >> wow. >> that's why you play the game. >> that's right.

causing accidents out west. and a new warning about romaine lettuce just before thanksgiving. the cdc announcing 67 people have been sickened by e. coli in 19 states. they are advising consumers and retailers not to eat, sell or serve this lettuce from salinas, california, area. a close call. a reminder to look up when you walk. a man in buenos aires, he was looking at his phone when he fell off of the platform. thankfully some good samaritans raced in to save him and everyone is okay but look up, look up. >> yeah, yeah, yes. we have another survival story. world class climber emily harrington trying to make history falling from yosemite's el capitan rescued by one of the most famous climbers in the world and we'll speak to him exclusively in a moment, but first will reeve with her story. >> absolutely terrifying. a climber's worst nightmare, a free-fall without safety ropes. that's what happened to emily harrington while she was attempting to become the first woman to free climb the rock face in a single day and now she's telling her story.

emily harrington is one of the world's top rock climbers known for scaling great heights. >> hang in there, em. >> reporter: but this morning, these images of harington after she survived a terrifying fall off el capitan. the iconic rock face in yosemite national park. fortunately another legend of the sport in the right place at the right time to save her life. >> i can wiggle my feet. i can feel everything. >> reporter: in this exclusive video you can see rescue workers carefully stabilizing emily harrington's neck. >> she's got tailbone pain and lower back pain. are you feeling any tingling at all? >> no tingling, i'm just cold. >> i remember thinking oh, having pain is a good thing. it means i can feel. it was a huge relief. >> reporter: the 33-year-old had climbed about 150 feet when she lost her grip. from her hospital bed, harrington showing her face badly cut after she said she pinballed down a section of the cliff. >> it wasn't a moment of panic. it wasn't a moment of surprise. honestly it was a very calm moment. in my head it was kind of like,

okay, i'm falling. this is happening. >> reporter: harrington was attempting to free climb the 3,000-foot sheer face in a single day. a no-ropes, no room for error feat made famous and completed for the first time by alex honnold in the oscar-winning 2018 documentary "free solo." >> that's the worst hold on the entire route. you get maybe half your thumb on the hold. >> reporter: honnold was with harington when she fell. keeping her safe and immobilized as other climbers including her boyfriend also helped with the rescue. "gma" was with harington live on the face of el capitan in may as she trained for the free climb. the one that ultimately nearly killed her. >> yeah, this will probably be my biggest challenge yet. it's definitely taking a lot of time and effort and energy and it's sort of a culmination of everything i've ever wanted to do in climbing. for right now i'm just going to rest and recover. that in the coming weeks just see how i feel and slowly get back into climbing. >> reporter: in his instagram

post ballinger praised his girlfriend's spirit and how elite of a climber she is. falls are a peril of the sport, no matter your skill level. thank goodness she was with people like alex honnold, though. >> yes, and we're going to speak to alex right now, will, part of the team that helped save emily's life. alex, thank you so much for joining us and tell us how emily is doing right now. >> good morning. thanks for having me. i think emily is doing well. i mean you have to ask her but i think she'll make a full recovery and i think she's feeling a lot better than she was. >> we're very happy to hear that. please tell us when you knew something was terribly wrong. when did you first know? >> so just to be clear about what happened so emily was climbing with a rope and so she was attempting to free climb a route but there's a distinction between free climbing and free soloing, so she was using equipment to protect her in case

of a fall but i was holding the other end of the rope and she unfortunately slipped and, you know, hit some things as she fell. but ultimately the safety equipment caught her as we expected it to. that's why she's using equipment and, you know, thankfully she'll recover. >> i'm glad you mentioned that because there was some in the climbing community that were a bit critical because you were tying your shoe at the time of the fall. so how do you respond to people who are questioning that? >> no, i don't think anyone is really questioning that. i think that if you're -- you know, emily was attempting a very difficult goal which is to free climb el capitan on a route that no woman has ever successfully free climbed and basically she's trying something very difficult. in order to do that, you have to make certain strategic decisions about where to save time and what style to climb in and so what we were doing while not textbook is pretty common for, you know, basically it's a useful strategy for that kind of a goal. >> when you realized she was

falling what did you do, alex? >> so i mean, you know, i was holding the rope but when she fell so much rope fell into the system, like so much rope pooled at my feet basically, i wound up actually grabbing the rope in my hands in an effort to catch her sooner and then she actually hit some things on the wall, you know, it's hard to say exactly what happened because it was nighttime and it was dark and her headlamp flew off but it was sort of an unconventional fall. it was like a very unusual situation in that she must have hit some things and also, i don't know if you saw the photos but she had rope burn around her neck which is a really unusual way for the rope to wrap around so it's hard to know exactly what happened but basically, you know, i caught the rope and she came to a stop and then we assessed the situation and helped her from there. >> it was dark and cold. freezing temperatures. do you think the weather had a factor on her losing her grip? >> yeah, i mean it's not just the weather. it's also late season in

♪ ♪ bring me a higher love welcome back to "gma." and thanksgiving is tomorrow if you didn't know and in the spirit of giving, we have an incredible story to share about a very special firefighter who goes above and beyond to give back to his community from raising thousands of dollars for a children's charity to taking money out of his own pocket to help families in need. t.j. holmes is outside the stamford fire department in connecticut with it all. hey, t.j. >> that's right. didn't we all at some point want to be a firefighter? right? it was the truck, everything about it was cool. well, for some people it was cool when they were kids but then it became a calling and the guy you're about to meet, lieutenant sean daly is one of those, a firefighter for 30 plus years putting out a lot of fires. that's not why we were called in. folks want to show how much they love and honor him. i'll go over.

he's a fantastic fire officer. >> sean is the best friend that everybody needs to have. he's the definition of a true senior man where he's your father figure but he's also right there in the kitchen helping you cook and clean and correcting you if you didn't turn the steak properly. >> reporter: but sean's service to his community goes beyond fighting flames. >> most people see my dad as a firefighter. one thing they don't see he will drop everything and help out anyone at any time. >> hey, sean, i just wanted to say hello to you from here in the middle east, i am thankful to call you my friend. he will give up his time, his money and anything else that someone else needs for the sake of their well-being over his own. >> he's not out saying, look at me, look what i'm doing. he's just doing it. >> he helps out at the soup kitchen, the foot bank. he was on the bomb squad with the fire department. he's always one of the first ones to show up to give a lending hand and that goes a long way. >> one of our former

firefighters, her child developed pediatric cancer and he felt that he had to do something. >> sara was 2 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer. the treatment that sara went through was brutal and it nearly killed her. >> maggie's nightmare inspired sean and he's been raising money for children's cancer research ever since. >> she's been off treatment now for 11 years and he continues to do it and to get new people, people who i've never met before. >> he encouraged a lot of people saying this is a really great thing to do and let's contribute. >> he'll form a team on the fire department and the whole event can when they get their heads shaved. >> sara went to the one of the fund-raisers he organized and had the honor of shaving his head. >> sean's efforts have raised more than $80,000. >> someone like sean who's making the effort to spread the word to honor these kids, it just show, you know, what kind of character he has. >> repter: maggie and her now
