. scattered showers today as we head into the thanksgiving holiday. the green, you can see it there. very scattered indicates where there are showers right now. this is a lot of people are hitting the road for the long holiday weekend. you can see traffic ll jd it usually is that way. that's no big deal. if you're coming into san francisco, the bay bridge is moving nicely. >> yes. the airports are still those flying to visit family this thanksgiving. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm a.m. i daetz. >> i'm larry beil weather varying greatly. wherever you may be. be. shoppers were doused with rain and hail. >> skies were pretty clear this afternoon though there were ominous clouds. it made it pretty easy for drivers along i-80. >>let check in with spencer christian.

>> what was bomb cyclone yesterday is an area of widely scattered showers. let me give you another look at live doppler 7. the santa cruz mountains we have scattered showers moving on shore. you can see the pinks and whites will. some snow in the higher elevations and around mt. hamilton as well. in the east bay, we have showers near concord, antioch. real vista farther south, in fremont, livermore area. the storm is not over yet. what's left of it ranks 1 on the storm impact scale for the remainder of today and tonight. we'll see scattered showers and possibly some hail, isolated hail or thunder, widely scattered of course and there's a chance of more snow in the higher peaks. a full forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, spencer. the rain is coming as lots of people are hitting the roads for thanksgiving. thises a live look from sky 7 over 680 this afternoon. you can see all those cars on

the overpass trying to get on to the freeway. they are just slowly crawling along. you can see some of the the roadways are still wet, too. >> for sure. let take a look at live pictures now. the bay bridge toll plaids a. you've got walnut creek and san jose. walnut creek, 680 north, heavy as it always is at this time of the afternoon. david louie live with a look at how people are handling the traffic. >> reporter: larry and ama, yes, they are. a lot of people got an early start to the day, especially if they're going to southern california. what you're seeing right now are people heading to the central coast or maybe into the central valley. they're leaving later but they can get to their destinations this evening. everyone seems to have a way of coping in the congested roads and dealing with being cooped up in a car with a family together for hours. it's hard to decide if it's worse to drive in the rain or just to be driving when it seems everyone else in the west is vying for pavement to get to their holiday destinations.

it was stop and go, commute-like traffic on 101 near morgan hill. it was backed up on highway 152 as drivers cut over to go north or south. that's where we ran into the erin may family taking a brey break on their road trip. >> we have one-liners in our family and we have the obligatory fire tablet ipad. >> technology helps? >> yeah. it helps in this case. >> ryan and rihanna were taking a popsicle break. how many times do you say, are we there yet? >> never in my life. >> but this one -- >> only once. >> this is day two of the halas family to see relatives in oregon. they're turning back because of snow conditions on i-5. >> if we continue to kb to oregon with the snow, we're not sure how it will be the condition going back, because we have to go back to school by saturday, sunday to corona. >> 8-year-old yusef is dealing

and traffic began flowing again smoothly. here's a look at different viewpoints. chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles. from three myeloowe eastbound 80 is closed to all trucks. >> crews up early this morning at squaw valley clearing the new snow from the roads. the parking lots and decks at the famous resort. more than 18 inches of fresh snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. a skier's delight. here's the view they enjoyed while i don't know how much they can see from the top of heavenly. it's socked in, the resort on tahoe's south shore. skier's enjoyed 11 inches of new powder. >> there was a dusting on mt. hamilton overnight. this is 4200 feet. there were reports of snow on mt. diablo and mission peak in fremont. >> a lot of people heading to the airport to visit family and friends far away. this is a live view of sfo. no major issues today despite the busy holiday.

>> but the real problems weret oakland international airport. hundreds of people had to return to pick up their bags this morning after the power outage. >> this was a huge mess and we got some answers. lyian melendez with the response from airport officials. lyanne. >> reporter: you said it. it was a mess. some airports around the country had their busiest day of the thanksgiving holiday season already. for oakland international, today is it. today is their busiest day. so you can imagine, it was not good timing to have this power outage last night. claiming your luggage may be the most annoying part of anyone's journey. add to that trying to find your bags today after they arrived without you the night before. >> came down here and had to wait 30 minutes before we were

told we'd have to come back this morning to pick up our bags. >> a major power outage crippled oakland international for several hours last night. power was restored by 10:00 p.m. planes remained on the tarmac. baggage claim area was in the dark, so was security. a spokesperson said there was never danger of anyone getting past security because screenings were halted. the power failure even triggered the fire alarm visible there in red. 1400 passengers had to be rebooked. danielle matthews on her way home to oakland was left stranded in phoenix. >> no hotel. no food vouchers, nothing. sleeping in the airport with hundreds of other angry people. >> maria lopez was promised by the airline they would deliver her bags to her home in cloverdale. a promise they couldn't keep. >> i called and they say no. we charge to your house. >> you're not mad? >> yep.

>> you don't look mad. >> i have to go to work and i not working. >> reporter: it's still investigating the cause of the power disruption that affected terminal and flight operations last night. 38,000 travelers were expected to come through here today. airport officials were hoping people affected would take a forgive and forget approach. >> very, very happy thanksgiving to everybody. >> reporter: happy thanksgiving. well, as you can see behind me, it's still rather busy tonight, but a much calmer airport than what we saw last night. now, let me ask you this. which airport do you think has had major delays and has been the most affected by all this weather? i would have said chicago. but i just read that, in fact, it's minneapolis st. paul. could i just finally say one thing. i'm so glad that it's not raining this evening. i'm live at oakland

higher than both san francisco and oakland. those concerns are definitely growing after that pedestrian was struck and killed in san jose. city officials are doing everything they can to address the issue but say it is an uphill battle. in the bay area's largest city, another traffic-related fatality has left this normally quiet neighborhood in disbelief. >> probably still be alive. >> just before 4:30 this morning, police found a man lying facedown near a curve near rue bino drive and fox worthy avenue. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> i know we take for granted every day what we have. not everyone thinks they'll get hit by a car. >> the victim not identified was the 53rd person to die in a vehicle collision in san jose this year. what makes it more troubling, he was the 7th pedestrian to be hit and killed this month alone. >> we know we have to do much more and we need to do better to

keep our residents safe and that's both with police officers getting out in traffic enforcement units and changing the configuration of road designs. >> whenever there's an accident, the department of transportation sends someone out to see what can be done to make it better. >> we're putting pedestrian imrovements all over the city to alert motorists. you'll see more of the beacons that flash for a pedestrian to cross. >> but urban planning experts say there's more pressure on our infrastructure than ever before. >> we've talked about it in terms of freeway capacity and public transit and trains. and now we're finally starting to pay attention to what it does to the pedestrian realm. >> reporter: the transportation department has made it clear to the city council that they need more money to make these sort of improvements, but they are getting the sense that there is enough political will to get it done. live in san jose this afternoon,

when you think about green and the holidays, you might think about rows and rows of christmas trees. today we're thinking about a different kind of green, it's not money. it's cannabis. today is green wednesday or black wednesday. vic lee at a cannabis store in san francisco has an explanation. >> reporter: thanksgiving, a family holiday with turkey and all the trimmings. the day before thanksgiving, one of the year's biggest drinking holidays. called black wednesday. a booming business day for bars. the world famous buena vista cafe which serves 2,000 irish coffees a day is no exception.

a look at the santa cruz mountains where we have the most widespread activity at the moment and light snow over the mt. hamilton area. in fact, some are fairly substantial in concord and antioch. it looks quite wet. for most of us, it's looking like this. just a lot of clouds as we look over san francisco from sutro tower. it's 49 degrees here in the city right now. 50. oakland, upper 40s. redwood city and san jose. 40 at gilroy. 45 at half moon bay. skies are brighter northward from the golden gate bridge. temperature readings and other locations. santa rosa, napa, petaluma. concord and livermore. looking westward from emeryville, lots of clouds from the distance. these are forecast features. spotty showers, the possibility of them. through the day tomorrow, through thanksgiving, freezing cold friday morning. the next round of rain will arrive this weekend. we still have a high surf advisory in effect until 6:00 this evening. wave heights are elevated.

there's still the possibility of dangerous rip current and beach erosion. 1 in the storm impact scale. tonight we expect a chance of scattered showers possibly isolating hail and thunder and snow, of course, over the higher peaks. forecast animation at 6:00 this evening shows scattered nature of the system and the continuing snow in the sierra and a few patches of snow in the bay area peaks. late tonight, spotty showers near the coast. again, going into tomorrow, although much of the day will be dry, most locations will be dry. there's a chance of old spotty showers popping up even the thanksgiving day as we're sitting down to have dinner in the afternoon or evening tomorrow. rainfall totals additional rainfall over the next 24 hours, not bring much. novato, around .17 of an inch and .03 in ben low man.

kreutz breaks it down. >> to understand the christmas tree shortage, we talked with tommy spear. >> it's real? >> it's real. man, it is severe. >> so severe that yes, christmas tree lots could run out of trees early. >> we've already seen a lot of crust mecustomers, do you have tree? we've never seen this mny customers calling this early looking for a tree. >> this tree shortage began in oregon six years ago, the largest exporter of christmas trees. the number one reason was in years prior, there were too many trees. >> a grower stopped growing because they weren't making that money. >> instead, many decided to grow marijuana or hemp. on top of that, recession forced growers to closed and two recent hot summers. >> it wiped out a large amount of seedlings. >> they take years to grow. now there's not enough.

[ applause ] >> you can -- >> so you can relate because this is what your father was hoping for and your mother that they were fighting for. >> absolutely. the bond between chris and debbie reminded me of my own parents. there was a moment when we were talking and chris reached out to grab debbie. that's something he thought he would never be able to do again, to initiate that touch, that love that he gets to express physically is something that i know that my dad missed more than anything and that my mommiesed as well. it was great to see. >> they're smiling down on their son. [ applause ] >> that's incredible.

>> what an unbelievable story. to think he was moments away from pulling the plug. none of this would have ever happened. over the decades, we've seen so many paralysis cases where the progress has been so slow. we've had cures for so many other things. the paralysis and maybe the stem cell treatment can unlock a new life for hundreds, thousands of people. >> yeah. this is, i'm sure, opening tons of doors right now, which is incredible. >> let's hope it continues. former president jimmy carter will spend thanksgiving at home after being released from the hospital in atlanta today. carter had been recovering from surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by bleeding from a recent fall. the 95-year-old former president fell twice in october hitting his head at least once. a fall earlier this year required him to get hip replacement surgery. he's your good friend, spencer. >> i was with them celebrating joint birthdays -- he's turning 95 and mrs. carter, 92.

jagger the wagger, we have bombay. we have benga and wrigley. when we first launched the program, our main goal was to destress our passengers. however, what we quickly found is that we have a way to connect with our passengers more on an emotional level. we have found that we're creating a sense of community. the idea for therapy animals got started the day after 9/11 when an employee at mineta san jose brought his therapy dog into work and he was able to see how his dog was able to relieve jitters and anxiety. >> this is benga, he's a shih-tzu mix, mixed with pekinese and poodle. she's been doing therapy work for five years and been at sfo for about three. the amount of people who cry over the dogs, pretty incredible. a lot of passengers are missing their own animals when they're

traveling, it provides them comfort. parents like to have their kids play with the dogs a little bit. it gives them a little break. traveling is stressful. >> this is a 5-year-old pig. julianna. it's super positive. we find that not everyone is traveling for positive reasons. we come into contact with a lot of people who are traveling to funerals. they might be leaving home for the first time. so to see a dog at an airport is super fun. passengers can pet the animals, passengers can hug the animals, passengers can take selfies with the animals. when a wag brigade animal walks into the terminals, they start to interact with each other and thes dogs and pet the dogs. it's proven that petting a dog reduces blood pressure. it makes people happy. the wag brigade animals are here
