to 4:00 p.m. because of the than thanksgiving day travelers and snow and heavy rainfall up and down the state is making it more difficult. david louie joins us live along 101 in morgan hill and he's been talking to drivers. david? >> reporter: well, ama, the clear weather means fairly smooth sailing out here on highway 10 is. the headlines north toward san jose and the taillights to points south. now we know it is difficult for families to be cooped up in a vehicle for hours on end trying to get to their destinations and putting up with a lot of boredom so we asked them how are they coping? this is a popular rest stop along highway 152 as drivers cut over from gilroy to interstate and it was an ordeal to get this far after the bottleneck in the hill view area. heather needed to get a snack and showed us what is best to

as severe. 98 flights there and four canceled. travelers who flew into oakland last night had to go back to the airport today to pick up bags because of the major power outage last night. planes were on the tarmac. baggage claim was in the dark and security screenings were stopped. it was a mess. 1400 passengers had to be rebooked. airport officials say they are still investigating the cause of that weird power disruption. and you could get a heads up on things that could disrupt your plans like power outages at the airport through the abc 7 news app. when news breaks you'll get push alerts sent right to your phone. >> take a look at this. check out the oil sheen on the estuary between oakland and alameda, the result of a fuel spill after a boat caught fire and sank last night. liz croy got new video of the fire and joins us live from the harbor. liz. >> reporter: good evening. contractors are still working in the dark that recover the boat

that sank and clean you will the fuel and the boat holds 250 gallons of fuel and that likely spilled into the marina so a lot of it did and it spread far. this video showed the moment a large boat caught fire last night in alameda. >> at about 10:00 p.m. we have a report of a boat fire and alameda responded. >> reporter: no one was hurt and the cause is unknown but the boat did sink and caused diesel fuel to spread throughout the marina. liz williams lives in a house boat nearby. >> this morning i walked out of my boat at 10:00 a.m. and inundated with a fuel smell. when i looked at the water there was a rainbow sheen all over it. i could see the fuel was just covering most of the water. >> reporter: video from sky 7 shows the fuel from alameda all the way to the oakland estuary. >> it is an active incident with the coast guard and they're doing the best to mitigate the runoff or flotation of petroleum products or hazardous fluids on

the water surface. >> reporter: an inspector with the department of fish and wildlife described it as minor to moderate. >> what you can see on the water is kind of deceptive. a little bit of oil and water goes a long way and spreads out quickly. >> >> reporter: and the most effective clean-up is natural evaporation. williams feels more can and should be done. >> we're in this climate change reality and it goes somewhere and drops down into the water and evaporates into the air and it goes somewhere and it is not like this is a nonevent and that is what i'm finding difficult about the explanations. >> reporter: and we are told that the boat owners are cooperating and are paying for the cost of the clean-up as it required of them. the department of fish and wildlife so far have seen no impact on wildlife. live in alameda, liz kroits, abc7 news. in our effort to build a better bay area we spent a week

on pedestrian safety. it is clearly an issue. we've seen tragedy strike just too many times taking too many lives in san francisco, oakland and san jose and elsewhere. in san jose this year it is already passed last year's total of pedestrian deaths and another deadly crash this morning. so what can be done? crist nguyen is live with a look at the big picture tonight. chris? >> reporter: dan, good evening. so far this year san jose has had more traffic-related fatalities compared to oakland and san francisco. city officials here are doing everything they can to address the issue. but say it is an uphill battle. tonight feelings of disbelief in this typically quiet neighborhood in san jose. >> had they stopped that person could still be alive. >> reporter: before 4:po a man was found face down at rubino and foxworthy and the 24th to die in san francisco after being struck by a vehicle. >> we take for granted every day

what we have because not everybody thinks they'll get hit by a car. >> reporter: so far there were 53 traffic related fatalities across the city. >> we have to do much more and we need to do better to keep our residents safe and that is both with police officers getting more officers out in traffic enforcement unit and changing the configuration of roads, road designs that will slow traffic. >> reporter: improvements are being made to streets in san francisco, oakland and san jose. including the installation of bike lanes and upgraded crosswalks but as cities continue to grow, urban planning experts say more pressure is being placed on our infrastructure. >> we've talked about it in terms of freeway capacity and public transit and trains. and now we're finally starting to pay attention to what it does to the pedestrian realm. >> reporter: whenever there is an accident the san jose department of transportation analyzes the area and traffic

the holiday season is usually all about tradition and there is a relatively new one available in california. instead of the typical gathering at a bar on the night before thanksgiving friends could get together at a dispensary. vic lee joins us live from san francisco to show us both. hi, vic. >> reporter: hi, ama. in fact, there is a gathering here at the apothecary dispensary, it is a party that started at 3:00 this afternoon and it will last into the night and they are celebrating. this relatively new tradition called green wednesday. thanksgiving, a family holiday with turkey and all of the trimmings. the day before thanksgiving, one of the year's biggest drinking

are on edge. >> i-team reporter dan noyes is here with only a story on abc 7 news. >> the school has been slow to deal with conflicts involving race hoping they would go away but a social media post described as black face has brought this controversy to a boil. families spend $49,500 a year to send teens to drew school in pacific heights. a college prep that claims it fosters an environment in which equity and respect for others are core. >> at drew you'll find your second home. >> reporter: but drew junior laurel bandy tells she endured several racist incidents during her time there. >> saying the n word on the bus and there was a game where you say the n word and gets louder and whoever bails out you lose. >> reporter: and laurel is president of the bsu, black student union. ten students of color of about

300 enrolled in the school. they were stunned by snapchat posts of a girl in what they describe as black face with the n word and her name. the second one said to all of the people who are mad from that post, my n-word i simply do not care. >> this is frustrating and angry because it made a lot of the kids in my bsu feel unsafe and not comfortable being around those students any more. >> reporter: laurel bandy tells me her anger turned to fear after she complainted to the school administration and she wrote when you think life is chill, racist kids at school. a white student reposted the video adding the words snitches gonna get stitches fr, meaning for real. >> she was targeted. you're a snitch. people in the hallway tell her you're a snitch. >> her father is a san francisco police officer. >> i alerted police to this. >> and you filed a report. >> i did. i'm afraid for my daughter's

safety. >> and they received a complaint and administrators were aware of the incidents and taken steps to address the situation. drew's head of school refused to be interviewed on camera but he emailed me that the social media posts were unacceptable according to both stated values and formal policies and our administration team immediate corrective steps both with the students involved and our school commune ipt as a whole. two weeks ago they held an assembly on the issue of race and asked laurel to address the student body but at the last moment they told her she couldn't speak and assembly was very general and had no impact. >> if you could get one message across to your classmates, what would the message be. >> just that i don't tolerate racism in any type of disrespect and i will continue to stand up and would love it if they stood with me as well. >> laurel is the most courageous young woman i've met in a long time.

>> reporter: ray was a basketball standout in college and played professionally in ireland and coached at drew's school the past three years but ray tells me she just quit her job there because of how she feels she protected the white students and what she said an administrator told her. >> you have to think about their future. we don't want to just suspend kids and go around expelling students because they have to fill out college applications and disclose why they were suspended. >> i took this history to the third baptist church and pastor amos brown, head of the san francisco chapter of the naacp. >> they should admit they have a problem. stop sweeching it under the rug. and then in a civil, ration at, sensible way, call that student body together and say this will not be tolerated here. >> after or unt vie you watched as dr. brown called the school and demanded action. >> because this is serious. for students to be involved in treating people wrongly because

nasdaq and s&p closed at new records. the decision to fly balloons for the macy's thanksgiving day parade are down to the wire. a game-day decision. the bigger balloons may be grounded because of strong winds that are forecast. the final word will come tomorrow morning. if winds are above a sustained 23 miles per hour officials say the bigger balloons, they'll be a no-go. >> oh, man. well the same winter weather is making millions of americans fight through the holiday travel chaos and some of the worst in minnesota where there is a snow emergency with hundreds of reported crashes. the problems are in the skies. some travelers like this one in iowa, they are choosing to just brave the mess. >> i knew it was going to cause trouble when i started hearing about it last week. i figured that is just my luck. >> today alone there were thousands of flight delays and cancellations. tonight is expected to be the busiest time on the road.

a bay area couple received a collection notice demanding payments for a loan they knew nothing about. >> how weird is that. so they contacted michael finney for some help. this is a weird one. >> here is a computer. what is up with that. that is all started with a mysterious shipment to a livermore family home. i unraveled the mystery from there. david and linda folks didn't know what was about to hit them. it began when they received this unexpected package in april at their front door. >> i was really surprised. a laptop computer. >> reporter: david considers himself computer ill letter at and would not have ordered it. >> i know i didn't order it. that is the truth. i didn't order any damn thing. >> the couple tried to contact the shipper simply mac. but after a debt collector demanded payment they reached out to 7 on your side.

the computer was bought online from simply mac. fraud investigators said someone ordered it from an ip address 300 miles away from the couple's home. the folks suspect fraud and say someone probably stole the couple's identity. they think that same information was used to obtain a loan from a third-party lender the company works with, a firm. melinda recalls the conversation her husband had over the phone. >> this is a collection agency and we want you to pay $333336.70. >> her husband continued to receive calls three times a week. and that is when linda decided to call 7 on your side. we contacted a firm, the loan company and it investigated and sent this letter to the couple. concluding someone fraudulently obtained the loan in the folks' name. the san francisco based company told seven on your side
