bay area peaks. >> and we're not done yet. >> we still have some more activity on live doppler 7. you will notice in the east bay a pocket of moderate don't be surprised if these showers come down pretty hard. we are seeing a few showers and even some lightening strikes just off the california coast here. so it's a level 1 on our storm impact scale. overnight tonight scattered showers, possibility of more hail, thunder snow over the highest peaks. how much rain have we gotten over the last seven hours? look at that over an inch santa rosa, oakland, and san jose getting over .83 and we have another storm coming. i'll let you know whether it's

going to impact your thanksgiving plans or weekend coming up. fresh powder filled the top. >> but of course with the snow comes slick roads. amanda? >> reporter: dan, ama, from the south bay bureau it usually takes us about an hour to reach the observatory on mount hamilton but today's snow slowed everyone down. we made it closer to the top and saw several people enjoying the snowfall. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in downtown san jose. and just above the city more than 4,000 feet up it's starting to look like it, too. >> it's really impressive for a native san josen like myself to see this much snow up here and during interview to see it snowing. that's amazing. >> reporter: robert garcia

wearing short sleeves. >> i was in 82 degree weather and so now i'm in 42 degree weather. >> reporter: a truck that usually takes about an hour from downtown with clear conditions slowed down with the snowfall. however, people we met says mt. hamilton offers them a sense of safety that isn't guaranteed on a trip to the sierras. >> it was white out and they couldn't see on the road like the car in front of you, and that's very bad. >> reporter: but wet roads and freezing temperatures anywhere can make for a slick commute. the road to the observatory is closed at least until 11:00 a.m. and possibly longer given the fresh powder. >> for either your thanksgiving or black friday instead of going shopping i'd say if the road's open try to come up here and see snow and not have to drive to reno or tahoe. >> and once the roads open, besides taking it slow, be sure to bundle up.

we watched the temperatures drop from the low 50s to freezing in a matter of miles. abc 7 news. >> thank you, amanda. happening now, there are a few snow chain controls in and around the sierra. cal trans says unless you have four-wheel drive all four tires need chains on 80 east of baxter to hirgs dale road from pine grove to woodford. >> one stretch of highway 50 just reopened in the past hour. there have been some snow covered free-for-alls happening out there. all lanes have been shutdown for hours while crews were rounding up several dozen run away cows. no kidding. check out all this madness. the chp says multiple big rigs jackknifed in the snow including a cattle trailer ironically spilling all of those cows. all of the cows were reportedly accounted for and we're glad to

tell you uninjured. and we're keeping an eye on the cal trans cameras are many are making their way up to the sierra. abc 7 news also out at a winter sports equipment store earlier today. we saw some of you excited to get fit up for some skiing and snow boarding during the holidays. but one couple we talked with was keeping some of that excitement at bay. >> we're going to try and head up if we can make it up. we're scared of going up with a little heavy snow on the road. >> the recent storm added up to 20 inches of fresh snow for some sierra ski resorts. here's a look at the ones currently open. >> check this out in the east bay. a hailstorm that hit bay point this afternoon. randy tweeted this video saying

alive. as the davis family gets ready for thanksgiving thoughts of finding their missing relatives is always on their mind. >> it was running through my mind we've got to find mama. >> reporter: the 75-year-old sandra young is like a second mother having helped raise him. and her two great grandkids didn't show up at his mother's house on monday as planned. the children are a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old. young has been raising them since their parents died in a car crash. >> yes, maybe she had come in a little late, but not go missing. >> reporter: davis said he spent four hours tuesday night driving through san pablo and other parts of the east bay where the car's license plate was tracked. fairfield police say young and the two kids are considered to be, quote, at risk given young's medical condition. but davis believes as long as the car is moving, they'll be

fine. >> as long as they keep tracking her license plate and she's moving, we know she's okay. >> young drives a green 2000 acura tl california license plate. the family says young doesn't have a cellphone which makes it more difficult in trying to track them. >> all right, thank you so much. new developments now contra costa sheriffs deputies are stepping up patrols after a recent rash in crimes. the crime comes less than a month after another home invasion in lafayette halloween night and that same night the shootings at a house party in orinda that left five people dead. take a look at this oil sheen. it was caused by a boat that caught fire last night. no one was hurt. the cause is still unknown, but

the boat did sink. diesel fuel from the boat spread throughout the marina. liz williams lives on a houseboat. >> this morning i walked out my door about 10:00 in the morning and was just inundated with a fuel smell. when i looked at the water there was a rainbow show. >> california department of fish and wildlife inspectors says the spill is minor to moderate and the most effective cleanup is natural evaporation. they haven't seen any harm to wildlife so far. officials say the boat owners are required to cover the cost of the cleanup. a ticket to ride that will cost you $10 to sit in a million dollar car. all the highlights from the auto show. >> i actually got off the respirator. >> he was paralyzed from the neck down. meet the bay area man now giving hope to others. and up in the air.

just an incredible story here. a bay-air man paralyzed from the neck down is walking again thanks to a new innovation in stem cell research. chris bar from lafayette was paralyzed while surfing at ocean beach in san francisco back in february 2017. >> i fell and went head first into the ocean floor with enough force to break my neck in eight places. >> reporter: chris bar had been surfing ocean beach every week for a decade. that was before the day in february 2017 when his life came to a sudden halt. the neck injury left chris paralyzed from the neck down. he couldn't talk or breathe on his own. >> when i got there the first words he mouthed to me were pull

thanksgiving morning and on until monday. it'll cost you $10 to get in. but if you want to take this car home it's going to cost you a little bit more than a million dollars. well, tonight one of america's biggest thanksgiving traditions is in jeopardy. strong forecasted winds could ground the iconic balloons for the annual macy's thanksgiving diparade. the decision is right down to the wire if winds are have gusts above 34 miles an hour officials say the bigger balloons will simply be a no go. >> and sandhya patel has been tracking the weather everywhere. >> i'll be talking about some more rain for the upcoming weekend, but it's going to be a little dicy for the parade. winds gusting up to 40 is what is expected. we don't have any strong winds, but we are still tracking showers as we get into street
