a hectic holiday morning for millions of us from california to new jersey. north of redding, california, interstate 5 shut down in an icy mess. dozens of people reportedly stranded for more than 17 hours. >> at this point they can't even plow the roads because so many people are stuck in the roadway. >> reporter: freezing rain and up to two feet of snow making travel in far northern california nearly impossible. in utah, firefighters rescuing two people hoisting them from the bottom of a snow covered canyon after sliding down an icy bank into a river. in a separate system, moving across the midwest, cars buried in up to a foot of snow in minneapolis. tempestuous winds taking out power to at least 300,000 americans. in chicago, the winds downing streetlight, scaffolding crashing through this taxi windshield injuring the driver. gusts to 60 miles per hour uprooting trees and downing power lines in indianapolis and toppling this utility pole in

toledo, ohio. >> thanks to our ginger zee and the weather causing all kinds of issues for people trying to fly this holiday season. we've seen thousands of flights delayed or canceled. this is a busy time and alex perez joins us from chicago's o'hare airport. alex, how's it going?, odor t.j. happy thanksgiving. check it out. take a look behind me. already pretty busy here at o'hare. now it's been a rough start to the holiday travel period for air travelers. those storms the last couple of days really snarled air traffic at some major hubs but today thankfully things seem to be moving much more smoothly. only about 14 cancellations being reported right now. but still hundreds of delays this morning that we are looking at. now, this is one of the busiest holiday -- thanksgiving holiday travel periods. more than 31 million people will be traveling over the course of the long holiday weekend. that's up from last year. the busiest day, still ahead of us, that's on sunday.

tom. >> all right, still a lot of snow out there. alex, thank you. the big question right here in new york this morning, will those world famous balloons fly, or won't they? it's down to the wire, and our will reeve is along the parade route this morning. will, good morning to you. i know we've equipped you with some latest wind-fighting technology out there. >> yeah, here we go. the nypd says their guidelines for the winds and if they can fly the balloons is 23 miles per hour sustained and 34-mile-per-hour gusts here at the parade. right now with my anemometer giving me the wind speeds, we're at 1 mile per hour right now. so if things hold for the 9:00 a.m. start, we should be good to go and these big balloons like intoey over here should be able to go up in the air. snoopy is dressed as an astronaut to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. spongebob is also somewhere back there. he is 44 feet tall. joined by his friend gary for the first time. he needs 90 handlers to get him

down the parade route, which is 2 1/2 miles long. 3.5 million spectators expected to be here celebrating thanksgiving here in new york ending, of course, the parade, does in front of the macy's iconic storefront. everyone really hoping that these winds stay as low as they are right now so those balloons can go as high as 55 feet in the air and spread some holiday cheer, guys. >> all right. will, thanks for that. one-mile-per-hour winds. >> not bad. >> i do think they are going to whip up because we were looking at ginger earlier. some strong wind there is in philadelphia already. ginger, tell us what the latest is. >> yeah, i was going to say 1 mile per hour isn't going to be it. i have seen gusts easily over 20 in new york, and 40 here in philadelphia. so we are windy. we knew it would be. look at those current gusts across new jersey, eastern pennsylvania, kind of taking the brunt of it right now. we'll see 30 to 50-mile-per-hour gusts throughout this morning and early afternoon. so then it will start to relax and then our attention has to turn to that storm that caused all that trouble in california

with all those folks stranded for 17 hours. here's how it will move through. the mountain snow could be up to three feet, tucson, phoenix in flash flood watches for up to one, two inches of rain, but it falls fast. you could see mudslides, debris flow on any of the burn scar areas. in southern arkansas, northern loui mississippi, that's going to be the problem. here's the one that nobody wants to see. sunday night, guys, we are going to have travel trouble, a rain/snow mix especially in new england and rain along the coast for i-95. >> certainly not good travel news there for us all. all right, ginger, thank you. we are gearing up for black friday but the major doorbuster day for bargains now falls on thanksgiving, today. it's a short shopping season this year between now and christmas, so the pre-black friday sales were more aggressive than ever. adobe out overnight with retail numbers. more than 50 billion spent online.

oh, poor guys. >> hope they get better. >> thank you so much. want to turn to a dramatic road rage incident that was caught on camera. you need to see this. a driver was arrested after police say he slammed into a family's car with their toddler inside. then swerved into a motorcycle knocking that rider to the ground. our zachary kiesch joins us now. zachary, we're hearing from the family involved in this now. >> reporter: t.j., good morning to you. it's easy to really empathize with this family and understand why they are so thankful this morning. imagine this, it's 5:30 in the evening driving down the interstate with your family. and without any real apparent reason other than the speed, a truck starts taunting you and then actually hits your car, exercising a total disregard for you and the life of your toddler in the backseat, and that was just the beginning of it. it's a terrifying road rage incident that left a texas family fearing for their lives. >> i have a baby. >> reporter: authorities say lucas martin and his girlfriend were driving with a toddler in

man throwing objects from the vehicle and slamming on his brakes before tailing them. that's when they decided to call 911 and alert authorities of the danger. >> and we're behind him, we're about to -- >> reporter: watch as the driver of that white tahoe is seen slowing down, speeding up and making lewd gestures before ramming them with his car. one of the victims pleading with that driver to stop. >> chill out, bro. i got a kid. >> reporter: moments later he cuts across the highway and barrels into a motorcycle. >> he just hit a guy on a motorcycle. >> he knocked him off the bike. he's trying to fight us. >> reporter: lucas martin who took the video is now speaking out. >> when he started to slow down, slow his vehicle down and continued throwing stuff at us and they started to swerve their car towards us and work us off the road is when we decided to call the police and i decided to film it because we needed evidence of what was going on at that point. >> reporter: the driver behind the wheel of that tahoe has now

i need help from a turkey expert. tell me everything i need to know before i start cooking at 9:00 a.m. this is my first thanksgiving. i am hosting. s that's a loaded question. what can you tell her real quick? >> starting off, if your turkey is still frozen, submerge it in cold running water, take it out of the packages and let it sit in there. it should defrost within 30 minutes. if you are going to put it in the oven, never put an ice cold bird in the oven. let it sit out for 20 minutes, let it get up to temperature and have a perfect oven roast. >> never fry when it's frozen. eddie, tell us -- i see a magnum of wine. i like where you're going. >> having a dry turkey is a possibility on thanksgiving. warm chicken broth is something you can do to baste the chicken to keep it from drying out. also red wine as a glaze. reduce it down, glaze it a little bit and give it more flavor. >> absolutely. >> dan, what do you have there? you got the bird. >> i got the bird. make sure you put it on a roasting rack to get that nice even heat right around. of course, when you did cook it do it low and slow. and to perfect it, make sure you do carve into it within the first 20 minutes, want to allow the juices to stay nice

surrounding the hit tv show "america's got talent." two of the show's popular judges, actresses gabrielle union and julianne hough, reportedly fired by nbc after just one season. a new report in "variety" claims the ousted judge has complained after a tox ig culture show show. "variety" reports one specific instance occurred when former "tonight show" host jay leno joined as a guest judge earlier this year. the report claims leno made a racially insensitive joke during a taping of the show. the line reportedly delivered on camera and in the presence of four staffers including union and hough. leno allegedly described a painting of dogs in the hallway that someone, quote, would find on the menu at a korean restaurant. union reportedly urged producers to report the joke to human resource, a complaint "variety" says was raised to an executive on set but was never escalated to hr. and according to the report, during the course of the season,

union and hough received excessive notes over their appearances. allegedly union was told her rotating hairstyles were too black for the audience of "agt," the note she received over half a dozen times. overnight's union's husband, nba megastar dwyane wade taking to twitter praising his wife writing, she is an advocate for our community and culture. as proud as i were of her being selected as a judge on "agt," i am even more proud of her standing up for what she stands for. union thanking her fans and family for their support. so many tears, so much gratitude. thank you. just when you feel lost, adrift alone, you got me up off the ground, humbled and thankful forever. hough has denied the claims made in "variety's" story saying she had a wonderful time on "america's got talent." nbc and the production company behind "agt" released this in res to the allegations saying "ert lent" has lo h inclusivity and diversity and both our talent and the acts championed by the show.

the host lineup has regularly been refreshed over the years, and that is one of the reason for its enduring popularity. nbc and the producers take any issues on set seriously but they were just hired in february. will not be returning for season 15. >> all right, amid much controversy. thank you, linsey. >> thank you. this morning we're also profiling a case that has gotten some renewed attention in the midwest. it involves a child that vanished. a case so hard to solve and a family that could use your help this morning. >> i remember seeing other kids abducted on tv and i remember i just cried and think if that ever happened to me, i'd fall apart. >> reporter: but the unthinkable did happen to her. and for 30 years now paulette anderson has been desperately searching for a single clue, any shred of evidence that could lead her to her son aaron. >> i was 26 years old at the time when he was taken and i remember thinking, how can people be so mean and wicked and cruel? he was everything to me.

and i -- i'm sorry. >> reporter: on april 7th, 1989 paulette says she was home making lasagna when the 22-month-old came to her wanting to go outside. >> it was the first nice day of the year. it was really nice out. i said, all right. i said, you need it stay right where momma can see you and sent him out. >> reporter: keeping an eye on him while she cooked but then at one point she looked up. >> i'm thinking what the heck. where is he? >> reporter: she called 911. >> and then all of a sudden there's this convoy coming down the road, the dirt road with cars and police and i started wringing my hands and going, oh, my gosh. this can't be happening to me. this can't be happening to me. >> reporter: the agonizing minutes turned into hours then into days. eventually the search focused on the snake river that ran right behind their home. aaron's parents tell us for seven to nine days search and rescue teams canvassed six miles from this river from this point

all the way downstream and they didn't find a single piece of evidence, not a boot, not a coat, no sign of aaron. >> the bloodhound we got in yesterday evening took the track right to the water so we're assuming that's where he went. >> reporter: they pulled up everything off the bottom and they said, something would have showed up. a river always gives up its body. >> reporter: it didn't make sense to the andersons. aaron's father steve says the bloodhound also traced aaron leaving the property. >> when it was tracking aaron's scent, it went across the adjoining property up their driveway and down the dirt road that way. >> reporter: was aaron abducted? news reports at the time posed that theory from jerry morris, a volunteer investigator who looked into this case for missing children minnesota. >> you don't conclude that he drowned until you find some evidence that would point to that and there's absolutely no evidence. >> reporter: hundreds of tips poured in but nothing solid. the sheriff's office telling abc news this case is still open.

>> that's nathaniel and jeremiah. >> reporter: over the years the andersons went on to have three more children, moved away from the house where aaron vanished eventually divorcing. but they've stayed united in trying to find their son launching facebook pages and now a new hope. >> what at the put his dna out there because he's questioning where he came from. >> reporter: paulette recently joined a dna testing site because she believes he's out there. >> clap your hands. good boy. >> reporter: aaron's father has also not given up hope. you think your son is still out there? >> i'd like to think so. in the event that it's possible that he is, wouldn't it be wonderful to find him? to be able to say, my long lost son. here he is. >> reporter: that would be wonderful. the sheriff's office would not comment on whether or not aaron's parents were ever considered suspects but that independent investigator tells us he found no evidence to suggest they were involved in his disappearance. they have dedicated their lives to finding him. okay, please take a moment and

it means to butterfly the turkey. lots of videos online that will show you how to split -- >> why can't we just call it that? >> because we like that word. it's funny. so we have it here. you just open up. that's the spatchcocking. i'll do a garlic herb butter for it. so you start with unsalted butter and we'll add in some lemon juice, need a little citrus, salt and pepper. heap me throw it in. drop all this in there. garlic. a little garlic and fresh herbs. little rosemary, thyme, perfect. >> everything goes. >> yes, put some salt in there. i'll season the top of the turkey with black pepper and salt. put it in there a little bit. what you do is mix all of this up and put it in some plastic wrap and it'll be firm like this, chill it in the refrigerator. want it to get firm because we're going to slice it like this and then all we do is tuck it under the skin. i like doing it this way, under the skin, you don't have to

all right. dan, this one is going to be for you. this comes from a facebook question from chelsea saying i have no more room in my oven, what is a quick no bake dessert i can make. >> we got one for you. all you need get a food processor or arms with really nice -- pop the ingredients, oats and butter, pumpkin puree, add the unsweetened one, my personal favorite and dates along with some of the coconut shredded. >> yeah. >> you add some cinnamon, all you need to do. >> vanilla. >> vanilla. salt. and you blend it. nice little dough-like consistency and roll it out and put it on top, coconut, l no ba numbers. cheers. >> i have to talk next. that wasn't smart. let's take one more spin of the wheel. all right. it's jamika, you are up. a question from our audience. dominique, take it away. >> i've always heard of deep frying a turkey but it seems complicated. how can i do it at home safely. >> deep frying is not worth blowing up your back porch. we cut up parts and fry smaller pieces, wings here and cajun spice and cayenne, garlic powder. let it six. drop it in your deep fryer and then, boy, i tell you deep fries for 12 to 15 minutes and it's golden brown, beautiful.
