caltrans closed two lanes to prepare the road, but officials say the freeway could be shut down if it continues to erode. also in southern california, the grapevine is open after being closed for nearly 12 hours because of heavy snow. the area was forecast to see 3 to 6 inches, while it is clear now snow showers are expected throughout the night. all right. hre is a look at the caltrans camera in the sierra king veil and here is one at donner's summit off 80. plenty of snow but traffic is flowing. no chain controls on interstate 80 or highway 50. >> our meteorologists rely on live doppler 7 to track the weather, and you can do it as well and access it all through our abc7 news app. happening now, stores already open for shoppers, and they don't have to wait for black friday to score some good deals. laura anthony joins us now from san leandro. laura, what's going on? >> well, hi, kristen.

i'm at a target store. it opened at 5:00. these brick and mortar stores doing everything they can to get people in the door. for one thing, being open on thanksgiving. for another offering deep discounts on offerings like this. 65-inch tvs here at target for a mere $280. it's not all about the turkey for those who opted to spend at least part of their thanksgiving shopping. what did you get? >> two, one for my niece and nephew. the original price is $29.99, and it was on sale for $18. >> reporter: walmart in san leandro one of a few stores that opened early and stayed that way. >> the newest grandkid. >> reporter: convenient for those looking to get a jump on the deep discount holiday gift buying. >> we just get to walmart in the last minute. >> you're kind of early. it's only thanksgiving. >> we want to go ahead before it happens. too many people out here. might as well take advantage of

mark, dion and kristen, for the first time ever. live in san leandro, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> wow. all right, laura, happy thanksgiving to you, and happy shopping. and the major retailers are opening up for a weekend of holiday shopping. kohl's opened at 5:00 today and will stay open through black friday, closing at midnight. walmart will have regula store hours, but their in-store black friday deals started at 6:00 tonight. target, where laura was opened its doors at 5:00 tonight. and the stores will remain open until 1al. they'll reopen for black friday at 7:00. best buy opened at 5:00 tonight and will reopen at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. there was a rush on the roads this morning, but not the usual rush hour. this rush was made up of runners taking part in the annual san francisco turkey trot. hundreds of participants young and old stretched out their drumsticks-what what -- winding through golden gate park and

while running might not be for everyone, the race has become something of a holiday tradition. >> because i need an excuse to sit around the rest of the day, drink beer, watch football, have some turkey dinner. >> it's great for kids. and it's on day when most people have the day off. >> what's the funnest part about the day? >> getting candy. >> she knows where it's at. although the skies stayed dried, the finish line at the polo field was about the consistency of, wait for it, thick gravy. >> yeah. this year was the 15th for the applied materials silicon valley turkey trot. organizers hope to raise a million dollars for five charities. participants chose a 5-k or a 10-k course through downtown san jose. in oakland, almost 4,000 runners took part in the third annual oakland turkey trot this morning around lake merritt. the run benefits the alameda county food bank and oakland public schools. good job to everyone who ran.

for many families in the south bay, heading out to cut down a fresh christmas tree in the santa cruz mountains is the priority before preparing thanksgiving dinner. david louie joined a saratoga family as they search food that are perfect tree thinking could be the year that lilly picks out the tree and not mommy and daddy. >> reporter: this is the third time chris and victoria carney have come to patch tree farm to cut down for their home. lilliana is 2 1/2. lincoln is 5 months old that. >> one has a good shape to it. it's nice and full. it's not too big, not too fall. >> dad got busy cutting down a douglas fir after searching five minutes for the perfect tree. what people like about this tree farm, when they cut down a tree, they're not actually killing itt in place. new sprouts come up and that will create a whole new generation of christmas trees. the carneys chose a smaller kids size for $80. >> in the past we've gone a bit

it was pretty windy in new york for the macy's thanksgiving day parade. balloons had to fly lower than normal. somebody trying to corral the nutcracker got hit by the massive balloon. she was okay. now this ronald mcdonald balloon partially deflatd because of a three-inch gash in one of its legislation. a thanksgiving day prize. president trump flew to afghanistan to spend some time with u.s. troops. here he is helping serve the

soldiers' food. the president and first lady made a similar trip last year to iraq on christmas night. check out san francisco city hall. pretty, right? all lit up in the harvest colors, mainly orange in honor of thanksgiving. >> and don't let the pretty picture fool you. it is cold out there. and abc7 news sandhya patel has more on your forecast. sandhya? >> it's only going to get colder by morning, dion and kristen. let me show you doppler 7 right now. it is pretty quiet here in the bay area. well did have a few oisolated showers earlier. isolated is the key for tonight going into tomorrow. it has been really storming in southern california, the sierra still seeing some snow. so if you have travel plans, be prepared. carry those chains because there have been chain requirements going on right now. winter weather advisory for the sierra additional up to 10 inches of snow expected for the highest peaks until noon

tomorrow. reduced visibility and tough travel. winter storm watch saturday morning to sunday morning. very heavy, blowing snow expected. and the snow level will be rising, especially towards sunday, possible road closures in the forecast. from our emeryville camera, we're look at a beautiful view as we look across the bay. temperatures right now as dion mentioned, it is cold outside. 30s, 40s at this hour and it is going to get very cold by morning. subfreezing for some of the north bay valleys. you will notice mid- to upper 20s womb. er going to see near freezing in the inland east bay in places like concord. 41 san francisco. 33 san jose. bundle up in the morning. as you take a look at the hour-by-hour forecast for tomorrow, we'll have some clouds, some sunshine. a lot like today. occasional showers not out of the question. really isolated for the afternoon and the evening hours. so it's not a game changer, but just keep those umbrellas handy. highs for your friday will look like this. in the 40s, 50, definitely a chill in the air like today. it is well below average. here is your saturday storm.

it is going to dump some heavy rain across parts of the bay area at times some gusty winds. more mountain snow in the sierra, and the wet weather continues into sunday and even beyond that as we continue to see a steady stream of moisture with an atmospheric river aimed at the monterey bay. accuweather seven-day forecast, very cold morning for tomorrow. level 2 for saturday. sunday is a 1. 1 monday through wednesday with that same storm and thursday another storm comes in here. so when all is said and done, saturday through tuesday, we're talking about several inches for the hills, and a couple of inches for the lower elevations. so don't be surprised if you see some minor flooding on the roadways and some possible damage from the wind. >> all right, thanks a lot. do you need a cough drop and some hot water? >> it's just allergies. >> thank you. >> tearing up because of the rain. >> is that what it is? >> that's all. well, today is a day where we take a time to give thanks to others, and here at abc7, we wanted to give thanks to those

[ chuckles ] >> yeah, they really like the roots, too. >> so, i grew up in piiholo, which is at the top of olinda road, upcountry, and it's the agricultural section of makawao. our hometown motto

is "keep it paniolo," which is the hawaiian cowboy. so we have a lot of influence from ranchland and acreage and agriculture. so at a young age, i was really, really exposed to people growing food and seeing cattle ranches and pineapple and things like that. oh, that's beautiful. and this one is taro, or kalo, right? >> [ speaks indistinctly ] >> mm-hmm. yeah, that's super-dense. >> it's closer to... >> like, two, three? >> i bet you that one's closer to, like, four or five. >> yeah, it's like a -- it's pretty big. i mean, it's definitely dense, you know, like the meat itself is almost like coconut meat. it's like pure carbie deliciousness. so we use these parts for the risotto in the restaurant, which are the leaves, which not a lot of people use. like, people will fold them into fish and wrap them and steam them and things like that. it's one of my favorites, why

i like to use it a lot. but we use specifically the leaves. so we cut these, and we boil them down in hawaiian sea salt and water and a little bit of baking soda till they're completely cooked, and then we puree it, and it gives it, like, this nice, earthy, masculine almost root flavor to it, but it's got a nice aromatic finish to it, and that's what finishes it, gives this nice, stewed flavor. it goes great with cheese, and it's great for rice, too, you know. ♪ beautiful plates, guys. the first roasted veg. push 'em all in. for me, i get really, really excited about food, where i want to do all these crazy things, and i want to try all this stuff, and the one thing i have to remind myself is that i have to set boundaries and i have to say, "okay, like, this is what i'm trying to say. this is what i'm trying to do. this is what i'm trying to showcase." and, you know, to balance the creativity is first you have to showcase the product.

the story that i always try and tell is what happened to that ingredient. and that's a breadfruit, or ulu tree. and we've used that in the past for a bunch of different things, but that's one of the most popular ingredients in hawaii right now. everyone's trying to use that for something. for the most part, produce is the thing that inspires me the most, 'cause it's always going to have a point in its life, just like a protein, too, where it's going to be its most beautiful. and then it's going to taper off, and it's gonna have a short life, and it's up to us as chefs to make sure we get it at the right time to showcase it. ♪ the thing i think that most people think of when they hear hawaii is pineapple, sweet potato, coconut, passion fruit. you know, you think of hawaii as the community of a lot of different cultures that came together to make something happen. ♪ ♪

as a collective, i have a lot of chefs that also give inspiration from their childhoods, from growing up here, too. we have other dishes, like the eggplant with the miso glaze on it. that was -- me as a kid, i hated eggplant. but if you put some salty-sweet miso on it and burned it a little, i really liked it. there's someone here who's cooking it and trying to make it something that's approachable. and we're trying to showcase on having very little to no waste and showcasing a product that's in our area to support our local community and our economy, as well. lopes family farms. these guys are awesome. we get pigs from them, as well, and a little bit of beef. i've known them since i was probably 10. so they're really, really awesome people. we've honored the old ways on starting from scratch and making the food. and there's an artisan and a craftsman behind everything that you're eating today. ♪ i think the food movement is all going back to the beginning of what food actually was.

the doughnut and the idea of food and treats in general. we create brioche doughnuts. everything's made from scratch. we specialize in brioche, and we do different styles of brioche. we make poi brioche, cinnamon brioche, a sourdough. brioche has always been regarded as the cadillac of dos, if you will. and i've always thought doughnuts are like the most humble pastry. and i thought i wanted to bring together the luxurious brioche and the humble doughnut. so i thought it makes perfect sense. make it approachable but make it nice. ♪ three more. we can get three more. yeah. i have a doughnut with miso. like the soup?" i was like, "the ingredients that you use for the soup, but it won't taste anything like the soup that you know." ♪

one of the more popular flavors locally would be the molokai sweet potato poi brioche. there's poi in the dough itself, which makes the brioche very tender and airy. the molokai sweet potato is cooked in coconut milk that is reminiscent of a snack i used to eat a lot when i was a kid. we use vanilla bean in our vanilla bean brioche. so it's in the dough, it's in the glaze, and we make our own handmade vanilla bean powder that we put on top. ♪ we have the real mccoy, which has a lilikoi glaze macadamia nut that's frosted with coffee. ♪ i also have a lilikoi caramel
