francisco's putraro hill neighborhood, this is not how families wanted to spend their thanksgiving, dealing with a watery mess flooding their streets and homes. right away let's get to that situation in san francisco. abc 7 news reporter ansar hassan joins us live. looks to be very active still. >> reporter: it is. we're at 23rd and rhode island here in san francisco. you can see water just gushing downhill. we have confirmed this is due to a water main break up the hill. i spoke with some folks up here. they say this is the second time this has happened t week. let's show you some video from just a short while ago. this happened around 9:30 p.m. the water seeped under homes on rhode island street. we don't know the extent of the damage or if there was any damage. over to highway 101. here is video of that.

chp issued lanes were closed but now all lanes have been reopened. now, san francisco fire department says it could be up to four hours before they get this water shutoff. we of course will keep you updated on-air and online. >> what a mess indeed. thank you. bay area residents are bundling up tonight. meteorologist sandhya patel joins us with a look at these frigid temperatures. >> and it's a good reason people are bundling up. let's take a look at those temperatures right now. already down to freezing in santa rosa, near that in napa, 33 degrees. it is going to be cold tonight, no doubt about it. we have a freeze warning until 9:00 a.m. for the north bay. except for the coastline you will notice those temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. some isolated spots will be even lower. remember bring in your pets, protect those frost sensitive

plants and don't forget about your pipes. temperatures in the low to mid-30s for those areas. possibly lower than that, so we're dwleg to take a look at the hour by hour forecast going into the wee hours of the morning. look at those temperatures plunging into the 20s. live doppler 7 quiet right now, but it's not going to look like that this weekend. i'll be back with more on that storm coming up. >> sounds good, sandhya. thanks. now in the south bay tonight some people found the cold weather festive. abc 7 news reporter kris joins us live in san jose. >> reporter: i'm not going to sing it but as the line goes, the cold never bothered her anyway, and that's exactly what we found. people making the most of the frosty thanksgiving forecast. >> in gilroy about 2:00 p.m.

burning isn't illegal, but they are discouraging it. ice and no is grinding holiday travel to a halt in southern california. check it out. at about 8:00 tonight cal trans closed the grapevine again. last night the pass was almost shutdown for 12 hours -- was shutdown. briefly opening this afternoon for a few hours with chp escorting through the conditions. cal trans is asking drivers to detour through 101. and on the east side of the san gabriel mountains, check it out, southbound lanes of interstate 50 at the cahone pass are closed due to accidents and snow. the treacherous conditions had some thinking they might need to find a hotel room. >> very scary. coming up the pass the 15 here was a lot of hidroplaning and a lot of stop and go. >> and holiday skiers trying to

get in and out of nearby big bear resort are stuck with all roads leading to the mountains closed. a sinkhole that opened on the southern california highway also gave headaches to holiday drivers. a collapsed highway caused a chunk of it freeway to just give way. a small mud slide trapped a car below. no one was injured. cal trans says it'll take several days of emergency work to repair that highway. and a little closer to home in the sierra cal trans says there is currently no chain controls on i-80 over donner summit, but remember to always carry chains if you are planning to go to the mountains. don't forget you can always keep track of the weather conditions where you live with the abc 7 news app. you can get updates from our weather team and monitor live doppler 7 on the go. black friday may not have officially begun yet but thousands took to bay area malls that opened before midnight like

sun valley mall in concord. ansar hassan spoke to shoppers. >> reporter: it's become part of thanksgiving tradition. shopping at the mall after thanksgiving dinner. >> it makes it feel like the holidays. like it's not the same if you shop online. >> reporter: and black friday deals were everywhere. her family saved $300 on boots and kitchen supplies. >> for the kitchen for sure. >> reporter: his family picked up jackets, two for the price of one. they saw the deals online but decided to buy them at the mall. >> good thing to be with the family and do a little something different than everybody being on the phone all the time. >> reporter: according to the national retail federation holiday shoppers are expected to spend 4% more than last year. on average consumers will spend about a thousand dollars each on gifts and other holiday items. the majority will shop online, but 53% of americans say they'll also look at department stores.

all right, let's get back to that breaking news coming out of san francisco. this is live look, a broken water main flooded homes and shutdown northbound 101 for a time tonight. it all happened about 9:30 at an intersection of 22nd street and rhode island street. we are still keeping tabs on the situation and we will send out on app as soon as we get word the water has been shutoff. san francisco police are investigating after two statues were defaced with red paint. the statues are offf

explorer and king. vandals wrote this is stolen land. the statues were moved years ago but it used to be what is now known at embarcadero plaza but was moved when it was redesigned. a bay area great grandmother and two grandchildren are back after going missing. family members began to worry after a 90 minute drive from fairfield to vallejo turned into three days. but today a chp license plate reader scanned a license plate and sent an alert to nearby residents. she saw the alert and recognized the family walking into her gas station. >> she's in the rest room. it didn't seem -- the kids didn't seem like they were bothered or nothing. >> now, she notified the h ando. family members couldn't tell abc

thanksgiving. there we go. you see the camera waving around in the wind right there. let's get to abc 7 meteorologist sandhya patel with a look at those conditions. >> it is breezy outside but don't be fooled by the breeze. it is going to be very cold tomorrow, dion. freezing cold as a matter of fact with patchy frost. protect your plants, pets and pipes. i can't emphasize that enough. temperatures right now 33 in napa, 31 in clear lake. some of the coldest spots. as you take a look at your morning lows, down to 26 degrees in santa rosa, 25 at lake port. it's going to be bone chilling cold in fairfield. 29 degrees, napa 28. 41 in san francisco. 35 in san jose by morning, oakland as well. you will notice livermore 32 degrees, so definitely bundle up. be prepared forthat it is a ver. not the case in southern california. the same storm that brought us the rain and the snow showers over the higher terrain headed
