days of the year. >> oh, my god. look, look, it's very heavy, heavy traffic. >> reporter: the grapevine was brought to a screeching halt thursday just outside of los angeles. big rigs littering lanes, tow trucks scrambling to free the stranded semis as snow slammed southern california. >> coming up the pass the 15 here was a lot of hydroplaning. >> seen a couple of cars that jackknifed. >> reporter: the whiteout conditions snarling traffic and delaying frustrated travelers. >> people were getting out of their cars and yelling. it was crazy. caused flooding in other areas. waist high water and swollen creeks sweeping away cars and trailers. >> on the way out of the campground we saw water coming over the wall and seen multiple people carrying their dogs out trying to get out the easiest

way they can. >> reporter: a major highway near san bernardino was crippled after a storm drain collapsed. in the east it was heavy winds that threatened holiday revelers. luckily the strong gusts weren't enough to ground them but they certainly made the balloons hard to control. the famous ronald mcdonald routed away after a regular gust caused the leg to deflate and a nutcracker took an unexpected dip slamming one to the ground. we'll have your accuweather forecast coming up in less than five minutes. growing violence in iraq. dozens of protesters have been killed by security forces there in the past 24 hours. about 350 people have been killed since the demonstrations began last month. the demonstrators want more jobs and less corruption. they blame iran for interfering in iraq's affairs. yesterday they burned the iranian consulate in a southern city. and in hong kong the public again has access to a university campus that had been blocked by protests for nearly two weeks.

now a mammoth cleanup effort is under way but more demonstrations are likely. hong kong's leader and beijing have refused further concessions despite a landslide victory for the pro-democracy candidates. this morning president trump is heading back to the u.s. after a secret thanksgiving day visit to afghanistan. the president thanked troops serving in america's longest war. this was his first trip to afghanistan and his second to a war zone. he also renewed peace talks with the taliban saying they want a deal. abc's megan tevrizian has more. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. this was so secretive, only a handful of his aides even knew about it. even the president of afghanistan was unaware of the visit until right before president trump landed. >> the 45th president of the united states, donald trump. >> reporter: president trump on his way home after a surprise thanksgiving trip to afghanistan. >> you are very special people and you don't even know how much the people of our country love

and respect you. >> reporter: the president serving turkey, addressing the 13,000 troops serving in america's longest war and promising to bring more troops home. >> but because of new weaponry and technology, we're able to do actually more with fewer troops. >> reporter: the commander in chief also sitting down with the president of afghanistan saying peace talks with the taliban are back on. this less than three months after abruptly canceling talks with them after a bomb killed an american service member. >> the taliban wants to make a deal. we'll see if they want to make a deal. it's got to be a real deal but we'll see. >> reporter: the surprise visit comes amid controversy at the pentagon after the president intervened on behalf of a navy s.e.a.l. at the center of a war crimes case. the navy secretary forced out after president trump refused to allow top leadership to strip eddie gallagher of his trident. in "the washington post" ousted

navy secretary richard spencer calling it a shocking an unprecedented intervention saying the president has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military, to fight ethically or to be governed by a uniform set of rules and practices. 19 americans have died in combat in afghanistan so far this year making it the most in the last five years. president trump wants to reduce the 13,000 troops stationed there now to about 8,600. janai. >> all right, megan, thank you for joining us this morning. two americans traveling in belize are among seven people who died in a head-on crash. they had been on a cruise ship but went ashore for a day tour when their van slammed into an suv on a two-lane road. local police say the suv was trying to pass another car when it moved into oncoming traffic. seven other people were injured in the crash. back here at home about 50,000 people are expected to learn today if they can return home after two chemical plant explosions forced them to flee. after burning for more than 24 hours, firefighters have finally

gotten control of the flames. anyone living within a four-mile radius of the plant was ordered to evacuate. the blasts shattered windows, destroyed roofs and terrified residents. >> just get jolted out of bed like that. it didn't take long to realize once we looked and saw the fireball. >> it fete like someone hit my building, that's how hard. like it shook everything. >> at least eight people were injured but all have been released from the hospital. there's still no word on what caused the explosions but an investigation is under way. time now for a look at your weather this friday morning. well, we're talking about snowy weather to move back into the north central part of the country. the dakotas more snow to come. dakota into minneapolis and more rain further south around iowa so that means in the long term

rapids and reeled in a live grenade dating back to world war i. the device was handed over to the police bomb squad. at least ten animals have died in a barn fire that broke out at an ohio wildlife park. fire officials say four antelopes, three giraffes and three red river hogs were lost in that fire last night. one zebra able to get out of the barn as the fire spread. the cause of the fire is still unclear. it may be early morning but already the black friday rush is on. in fact, some of these shoppers at a mall in syracuse have been waiting since wednesday night. some of the biggest deals we spotted, walmart is discounting some apple products which almost never go on sale. the air pods are down from 129 -- down to 129 from 159. at macy's a 13-piece cookware set has been slashed 75% to 30 bucks and the shoppers at a houston area target took aim at a variety of products.

a houston family of five was among seven people killed when a small plane crashed in ontario, canada. it was discovered in a heavily wooded area. no word yet on what caused the crash, but investigators are reviewing weather among other factors. the hits keep on coming for the new england patriots. the team is looking for its fourth kicker this year after their current kicker underwent an appendectomy. the latest injury news comes after eight patriots missed practice because of flu-like symptoms. the pats play sunday night in houston and the players seem to be concerned about the flu bug. >> in my years here, it's probably the most guys i've seen just be gone with just being sick. you look in their eyes and you can tell they were just out of it. >> as of last night four of the eight affected players are still unable to practice. this year's thanksgiving football feast ended in georgia. the saints marched into atlanta left with their third straight

night, this is not the only place where officials identified breaks. the public utilities commission says three breaks happened along 22nd street on the intersections of kansas, rhode island and carolina street. a resident we spoke to last night says this is the second time where the water department was in the neighborhood. >> i thought they fixed it. i thought it was fixed. again, there was water department early in the week, now it's the fire department, which means it's a serious situation. >> water service in the area has been shut down. as you can see, crews are currently making repairs. there is no word on a cause at this time. reporting live in san francisco, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> thank you. the time is 4:30. if you're just joining us. good morning. happy friday.
