the weather service is warning that travel could be in their words difficult to impossible. they're working to clear the roads this morning. chains are required here and on highway 50 except on vehicles with four-wheel drive and snow tires. there could be two feet or more on higher mountain peaks. mud creek on highway 1 in

the big sur area will be closed due to concerns about mudslides in this weekend's storm. it closed a few minutes ago, 9:00 was the time it was scheduled to close. the slide closed last night at 5:00. the stretch of roadway is in the southern part of monterey county. both sides where seen slides in the past. the bay area isn't the only place seeing rough weather. parts of the san bernardino mountains are buried in snow. the community of running springs saw several feet and roads are closed off to only local residents. many of them are getting around on foot. the storm also knocked out power to tens of thousands of people, some of them who said they got back after a very chilly night. take a listen. >> we were just out with 20 hours of our electricity being off, it's pretty cold. it got down to 17 degrees. >> we were all cuddled up next to the fireplace.

breaking news out of san jose, two people are dead and five injured after a crash on highway 101. it happened just after 4:00 this morning on the northbound lanes. the chp says the suspect's car was speeding when it rear-ended a nissan. the driver of the nissan lost control and hid a guard rail. that driver and a passenger died. a second passenger were taken to the hospital. three passengers in the suspect car were also hurt. the driver was a 21-year-old man of san jose. he was taken to the hospital and faces charges including felony dui. and now to more breaking news. police in new orleans say 11 people have been shot in the city's famed french quarter. this happened around 1:30 this morning our time. this is video of canal street,

that's a popular night life area there. two of the 11 victims are in critical condition. police say officers were already in place for the bayou classic football game. they confirm they were within feet of the shooting but there were so many people around that it was hard to determine who was firing shots. no arrests have been made but police have dabetained a personf interest. today is world aids day, to support people living with aids and hiv. it's one of the most devastating pandemics in history. glide church in san francisco will hold a special celebration honoring world aids day. it got under way 15 minutes ago. you're invited to a community event for world aids day in golden gate park. several panels of the aids memorial quilt will be coming back home back to the national aids memorial here in san

heavier rain up towards mt. st. helena. calistoga has been wet. and over towards hercules, highway 37, looking at the wet weather. we widen the view and the focus is on the central coast, the santa cruz mountains. you can see heavy rain there. we're on the northern edge of it. the energy is offshore. it's all going o shift south eventually by midday tomorrow. in san jose you have wet weather, 53 in san francisco, 55 in the south bay exploratorium camera. it's gray, breezy. 51 in concord with light rain at times. temperatures 10 to 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. wind gusts of 45 miles per hour at mt. diablo. along the coast, 20 to 25 miles per hour. mt. st. helena, 36 miles per hour. visibility just over an hour in napa, petaluma, and from our east bay hills camera we have a break right now. periods of rain and wind this morning, advisory and warnings through 3:00 a.m. monday morning. the wet, unsettled pattern

continues into next week. rainfall amounts have been 2 1/2 inches, oakland barely 2/10ths. santa rosa, 2 winds pick up the moisture, and as it slides to the east, not a whole lot left. but we're still looking at more rain throughout the day today as this system lingers and stalls offshore. winds continue until early monday. the rain today continues in the same locations. although by the afternoon, san francisco, east bay, still wet. south bay. this is overnight and into early monday morning, you've got showers. the break comes monday afternoon. and then we're looking at still monday night, a few showers. let's put the rainfall totals together, the rest of your sunday and monday. the green indicates the higher elevations. and looking at the enhanced

rainfall. and the blue indicating lesser amounts here, about 2/10ths to maybe 3/4 inch. you can see over 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches in calistoga. the week ahead, this is monday, still showery, a little better monday afternoon. into tuesday, we get a break. by wednesday, more wet weather wants to come our way. thursday, a better break. on the way for late thursday into friday, more wet weather. if you're planning for the week ahead, it's going to be a soggy one today. it's breezy. we're looking at temperatures in the 50s for everybody. and it is going to be not only a gray day today but the winds will keep it pretty blustery as well. that's why we have a level 2 on our storm impact scale. download our accuweather app, the showers through the monday morning commute ease up in the afternoon. scattered showers mid-week. the focus should be on the end of the week where we could see heavier rains.

a bay area couple received a collection request for a loan they knew nothing about. they contacted 7 on your side's michael finney for help. >> reporter: david and melinda didn't know what was about to hit them. it began when they received this unexpected package in april at their front door. >> i was really surprised, a laptop computer. >> reporter: david considers himself computer illiterate and says he would not have ordered it. >> i know i didn't order it. that's the truth, okay? i didn't order any damn thing. >> reporter: the couple said they tried unsuccessfully to contact the shipper, "simply mac." after a debt collector demanded payment seven months later, they reached out to 7 on your side. it had been bought online from

simply mac. they said someone ordered the computer from an ip address 300 miles away from the couple's home. the folks at simply mac suspect fraud and say someone likely stole the couple's mo melinda recalls a conversation her husband had over the phone. >> this is the collection agency and we want you to pay $3,336.70. >> reporter: her husband refused. so he continued to receive calls from the debt collector three times a week. that's when melinda called 7 on your side. we contacted a firm, the loan company. it investigated and sent this letter concluding someone fraudulently obtained the loan in the couple's name. affirm told 7 on your side it determined that their information was used by a third party to open an affirm account. upon receipt of their claim, affirm took immediate action to

>> hi, liz, good morning to you. a 2 on our storm impact scale. we're combining the rains and gusty winds throughout the morning hours. you can see the focus on the south bay, you can see the darker green and yellows closing in on about an inch in morgan hill, upwards of three to four inches in the santa cruz mountains. to the peninsula, 280, woodside, palo alto, scattered light showers in the north bay. san rafael, lucas valley, and further south, spotty into southern marin, san francisco. as we widen the view, the focus is along the central coast and we'll continue to see the wind and the rain being pumped in here throughout the day today. it is 54 in redwood city. there is a look from our roof camera where it is soggy. this is san jose, some drops on the lens. 50 in napa. much warmer out there. we have fog and you can see the wind from the san mateo coast to half moon bay. the wind advisory and high wind warning with us throughout the day. you can see throughout the afternoon, the periods of rain

up in the north bay. it will be in san francisco, and we'll continue to see it in the mountains. a full look at our week ahead in a few minutes, liz. >> lisa, thank you. today is expected to be the busiest air travel day ever. but a dangerous blizzard is sweeping across the country. the storm system is now heading for the east coast after slamming the midwest. abc 7 news reporter zachary kiesch has more. >> reporter: this is expected to be the busiest air travel day in u.s. history. tragedy in an extreme blizzard-plagued south dakota, a plane carrying 12 people crashing shortly after takeoff. nine people were killed including two children and the pilot. >> we had extreme winds, snow, visibility issues. >> reporter: heavy snow slamming north dakota too. vehicles spinning out on the highway and drivers barely able to see in whiteout conditions, as plows struggled to keep the roads clear. in a similar scene in minnesota,

weather crews out in full force with stranded cars littering the streets and interstates. drivers proving to be no match for the snowstorm as they wait for trucks to dig them out. gale force winds in colorado violently whipped up snowfall, making it almost impossible for these people to push their own cars off the road. on the west coast, major flooding in southern california. watch as emergency responders rescue these trapped passengers. crews in san diego using small yellow rafts to get them to safety. and an urgent search in arizona for a little girl. she and her family were swept away in a vehicle friday night when it was overcome by floodwaters. two other children died. as these storms wreak havoc in the west, airports in the u.s. already reporting hundreds of delays and cancellations. today, a record 3.1 million people are expected to fly. the tsa trying to speed up the process using a new screening process for i.d.'s at some

airports nation wide. zachary kiesch, abc news, new york. and if you know someone who is flying into sfo, check their flight status before heading to the airport. this is from our sfo camera right now. you can't even see it. according to the faa website, because of the weather and strong winds, some arriving flights are delayed an average of 4 1/2 hours. also today, it's the last weekend day of the san francisco international auto show. but it's set to have a climate change protest steal attention right outside. activists say car makers like toyota and gm are abandoning their commitment to california's air standards. it will be at the miscone center between 1:00 and 3:00 today. mercury in the fog is poisoning mountain lions in santa cruz. according to researchers, mercury is coming out of the ocean, then goes up into the

atmosphere, where the fog absorbs the mercury which then passes over land. the levels of mercury is approaching toxic thresholds for mountain lions in the santa cruz mountains. another developing story abroad, this morning the suspect in friday's deadly london stabbing claimed in 2008 he was not a terrorist. but he was convicted of terrorism in 2012 and released from jail last september. he was under electronic monitoring when he carried out the attack. here is nbc's karina mitchell. >> reporter: london still reeling after friday's terror attack in the heart of the city. a knife-wielding suspect on a deadly rampage, killing two people and wounding three others. police called to reports of multiple stabbings on london bridge. passers-by jumped into action armed only with a fire extinguisher, chasing the man

down, disarming and detaining him until authorities arrived. officers shot and killed the suspect. >> this cowardly act was countered by iredible acts of bravery both by members of the public and police officers. >> reporter: britain's prime minister thanking everyone for the quick response. >> i want to pay tribute, as i think the whole country is, to the sheer bravery of those members of the public who went to deal with him spontaneously. >> reporter: the suspect, 28-year-old usman khan, speaking to the bbc in 2008 after his home was raided by police. >> all the community knows me and they even know, if you ask them, they will know i ain't non terrorist. >> reporter: but he later admitted being involved in a terrorist conspiracy. khan was convicted in 2012 for terrorism offences and released from prison in december of 2018. now questions about how he was able to carry out this attack

even as he was being monitored electronically. >> we found no evidence, no evidence to suggest anybody else was involved in this attack. >> reporter: today, isis claiming khan was acting this their name. meanwhile, the three people he stabbed remain in the hospital. corina mitchell, abc 7 news. in the east bay, deputies are asking for whoever stole a dog in castro valley to turn it in. castro valley news posted these photos. they say the dog belongs to the extern sister-in-law of one of their team members. the dog was in the parking lot of the marketplace shopping plaza friday night. the sheriff's office says the dog can be returned anonymously with no questions asked. happening today, a memorial concert will be held to honor the 36 people who died in the ghost ship fire. tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the deadly fire at the oakland warehouse. in september, a judge declared a mistrial after a jury deadlocked on the involuntary manslaughter

in the south bay today, the final day of the harvest festival, said to be the largest crafts show in the west, held as an alternative to mall and online shopping. more than 250 artists are at this year's festival. it's held at the san jose convention center from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. kids 12 and under are free. a good activity for families, i know when kids are running around inside during the rainstorms. >> send them outside. we have upper 50s and breezy winds in the east bay. it's not that rainy, we have a break. emeryville right now is 57 degrees. certainly some dry areas. but we are in between some heavy rain to the north of us and of course the central coast along with gusty winds. what it means for your sunday and the week ahead, keep the rain gear with you.

the santa cruz mountains and san jose getting a decent amount of rain. it's a level 2 on our storm impact scale. anywhere from a tenth to more than an inch is yet to come, and still the wind advisories and the wind warnings and the flash flood watch up in the north bay. so this is all through early monday morning. here is the golden gate. you can see a bit of a breeze there. and the cloud cover, let's take you into the south bay where it is certainly soggy from morgan hill, picked up about an inch of rain. mt. hamilton, wet. santa cruz looking at several inches. on the peninsula, it is starting to pick up a little bit for you, around san bruno, 280. burlingame, cross the bay from foster city to hayward, union city, pleasanton, light showers in the north bay. light rain from petaluma, novato, highway 101, heavier around mt. st. helena, calistoga. in the east bay, not a lot going

on from martinez, highway 4. wet pavement, breezy winds. high 37, certainly wet up there. the focus is along the central coast, around big sur. it shifts northward to around santa cruz today. that's going to keep much of the south bay into the wet weather. here is a look at san jose with the raindrops on the lens here. and over into our exploratorium camera, looking at the gray sky. wind gusts above a thousand feet, mt. diablo, 40 miles per hour. temperatures are all in the upper 50s, so pretty mild. we are looking at those gusty winds along the coast. certainly a wet day out there as we look at light amounts. so far, 24-hour totals from livermore, just over a tenth. look at redwood city. as you head up into the north bay, mill valley over 3/4 inch, over 5 inches in sonoma county, los gatos a half inch. we'll add more to these totals today. we certainly are watching those

winds. at the coast they're gusting to near 50 miles an hour. throughout the afternoon, still looking at the possibility of some very gusty winds. here is the hour by hour. 12:30 this afternoon, we've got heavier rain along the coast. it is going to be pushing eastward across parts of the bay. we will have also lighter amounts of that rain shadow effect through monday night, looking at about 13/100ths, hayward, fremont, not that much. as you head to the north, the darker shading in the green, over an inch to nearly 2 inches in the north bay, inch. a half inch in the city. widely varying amounts. through the west of the week, they're not going to on that map, we're looking at upper 50s throughout the day today. the mild weather stays with us, a 2 on our storm impact scale. we've got the enhanced rain and higher elevations, looking at

at least one month out of the year. >> reporter: she's practicing a presentation she wrote on ways to save water to high school students, business leaders and local officials. >> my project is really based on water conservation and trying to find a drought solution. >> reporter: the junior at american high school in fremont is taking ap classes and thinking about college. but all that takes a back seat to her brainchild, something she calls the gray water project. >> gray water is lightly used water from sinks, showers, baths, laundries. it's basically any water that you used once in your home and you can use again. >> reporter: the average home produces 180 gallons of gray water per day that could be reused, not for drinking, though. >> you could use gray water for toilet flushing and you can also use gray water for landscape irrigation. >> reporter: it's a substantiate that intrigued her after experiencing droughts in california and her parents' native india. we spent four years designing

and researching gray water systems. this month she traveled to sweden where she was awarded the children's climate prize and 10,000 u.s. dollars to continue her work. >> it was amazing. i can't describe it any other way. >> reporter: she's the youngest member of the fremont environmental sustainability commission which advises the city council on environmental matters and regularly speaks to groups from elementary school age to senior citizens. with all of that, can she still find time to be a kid? >> i mean, yeah, my friends and i still hang out. we still talk about school. and we facetime about homework. >> reporter: she isn't sure yet whether she wants to stay local for college or maybe take a shot at the ivy league. whatever route she takes, this abc 7 star will still be drawn to ways to make our planet a better place to live. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> the future is in good hands. to nominate someone to be an acs

countdown, games, activities, as well as information regarding norad's mission of defending north america and on december 24th, you'll be able to track santa as he makes his way around the world. has santa finished getting all his gifts yet? >> i can track him too, that's a radar, you know. yeah, he's very busy still. we're tracking rain right now. and the heaviest is in the south bay from gilroy to morgan hill closing in on an inch there, four to five inches in the santa cruz mountains. it's wet from san bruno, san mateo, redwood city, across the bay into pleasanton and dublin. more light rain in the north bay, petaluma, novato. very heavy rain from santa cruz to big sur and gusty winds. throughout the day today, more periods of rain, mainly in higher elevations. the wind will be with us, it's going to be spotty rain, and then into monday afternoon, there is our little bit of a
