a mix of chilling temperatures, high winds, pelting rain, a recipe for misery both on the roads and for those at home. >> my mom and dad are scared. they're worried someone's going to break in or something because there's no power. >> as people across the bay area head back to work, what's in store when the storm continues in the morning. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. >> announcer: now, news to build a better bay area from abc 7. >> taking a live look outside, this is the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the wind just whipping the flags around. the roads and the lens are w expect similar conditions during tomorrow's condition. let's get to abc 7 weather with more on the timeline. >> this evening the storm seemed

to be weakening a bit in the central part of the bay area. most of the activity was down south. it's raining steadily and heavily in the santa cruz mountains. but all of a sudden in the last few minutes these pockets of downpours have popped up in the north bay and east bay. a little bit further to the northeast, vallejo and hercules. we've got pockets of downpours right now. so, this storm is still with us, still energetic. it ranks one on the storm impact scale. we can expect rain and showers and isolated downpours tonight and into the early morning hours. wind is gusting 35 to 50-miles-per-hour in some locations. and as a result of that, we still have high wind warning in effect for many coastal areas and wind advisory for the remainder of the bay area until 3:00 a.m. i'll give you a closer look at that in just a few minutes. >> spencer, thanks. the rain and wind has caused some damage across the bay area.

in santa clara, hundreds of people were left without power for almost 24 hours. abc 7 news reporter loose pena joins us live where the lights just came back on in the last few hours. >> reporter: that's right, the power is back on in this neighborhood after 22 hours. those lights behind me are a good sight. the culprit, the wind and those power lines. it's been a busy night in santa clara, we found trees on top of cars, arching electrical wires. >> we haven't had power for like 16 hours. >> how has that been? >> it's been pretty bad. >> the trump family is not alone. the outage affected 2,600 2,6000 customers in both silicon valley power and pg&e.

powerlines and leaving several blocks in the dark. >> we saw the building fall or the wall fall down. i don't know what's going on over there. >> while silicon valley power crews worked on this site four miles ago, another power outage was reported. >> lights were flickering in our condo when we came in. we tried to turn the water on and there was no water. and we heard a loud like generator sound. >> that loud noise came from arching electrical wires, 199 plead guilty skpe customers were left without power. >> the winds for pretty intense for a very long period of time. >> the utility company says they're investigating the cause of this outage. at a home depot we met this family. they saw the effects of the heavy winds and rain tonight and saw they're ready. >> we have stocked up on flashlights and we've got some candles at home as well.

and our stove is ready. >> reporter: now, as to why it took 22 hours to get the power back on in this neighborhood, silicon valley power said it was because of extensive damage needing repair. in santa clara, abc 7 news. >> thank you. taking a live look now at sfo, the holiday weekend has shaped up to be a nightmare for thousands of travellers in the bay area. today, sfo saw 504 delays and 165 cancellations. not only is there the storm here, but snow is pounding the northeast. here's abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard with more. >> it could have been better if the flights on time. >> reporter: frustration was building at sfo. the rain caused flight delays and dozens and dozens of cancellations. travis preston and jen had aea california but their flight home

was cancelled due to a snowstorm in manchester. they're taking home tire chains as a souvenir after getting caught in a sierra snowstorm. >> i had to buy chains for the rental car and go through about four feet of snow. >> driving in the bay area was treacherous sunday morning. windshield wipers got a work out. >> taking it slow, making sure the tires are pumped and everything is in motion, you know? >> reporter: this uber had great advice for driving in the rain. >> not like this, not like this. straight on the road. >> reporter: back at sfo, jen and travis are camping out waiting for they flight back home. >> i thank god for meditation, but whatever. you do the best you can. >> reporter: she told me she's been meditating most of the day in the terminal. if you are flying out over the next 24 hours, do yourself a favor. check with your airline before coming to the airport. your flight may be delayed,

hopefully not cancelled. abc 7 news. it is a snowy drive up to the sierra. chain controls are in effect on i-80 for those who do not have snow tires, four wheel drive, or an all-wheel drive vehicle. they are required. chains are needed from twin bridges to myers. the wet and windy weather is being blamed for knocking down a well-known home in liver more. these are photos sent to us showing the branch that landed on the roof. his light show has become a holiday tradition 37 years in the making. we're told the tree limb smashed out about 35,000 of the home's roughly 600,000 christmas lights. the plan is to get to lights back on by tomorrow evening. you can always keep track of the weather conditions where you live with the abc 7 news app. just track the rain on live doppler 7 and get our weather team.

concord police are ingest gaiting an officer involved shooting tonight. it all happened on oasis drive in concord about 11:45 today. two elderly residents called police to report their 6 # 0-year-old son was acting ir radically and was possibly under the influence of drugs. officers found him in the front yard and when they arrived and tried to talk to him, he went back in the house. >> our officers went inside and located the son straddling his mother while holding a knife. >> the officers opened fire fatally wounding the man. his parents were hospitalized eoe diedn the njuries.hehi las. memorial for the victims was held at a church in

oakland. here's abc 7 news reporter hasan. ♪ >> reporter: tonight's memorial concert for those who died in the ghost ship warehouse fire was focused on the victims and their music. this man talked about losing his son. >> it was devastating. >> reporter: but he's thankful his son's legacy is being kept alive through his art. jonathan's work was featured during the memorial. >> for me and my parents it's been really -- events like this are really healing. and getting a chance to have his work out there and shared is something that's really comforting. >> it's a real marker in the year. >> reporter: judy and brian huff lost their son. they're grateful for these types of programs and happy the victims' work is being shared. >> we see video and hear music and get to relive that over and over. >> it's pretty special.

today is world aids day. you can see here a live picture of san francisco city hall just lit up in red tonight to acknowledge its 31st anniversary. earlier, hundred of people gathered in golden gate park at the national aids memorial. organizers say it's a reminder that more than 35 million people have died from hiv and aids-related causes. this year the memorial welcomed the first panel of the aids memorial quilt back home in san francisco. it celebrates the lives of people who died of aids related causes. >> i think everybody is very proud that the quilt that started here in san francisco is coming back to san francisco and th il vend support the next stages of ending the epidemic. >> the ceo of gilead sciences says he believes that we could eliminate the disease in the next decade. in the u.s. 1.1 million people are currently living with hiv.

enchanting. >> reporter: we are at the official harry potter cast party. earlier today was the red carpet premier of the two-part play. yes, it is so big there are two parts. tonight's cast performed the west coast opening to a sold out crowd of die hard fans. "harry potter and the cursed child" is about harry potter's life as a father and his son's experience at hog warts school of witchcraft and wizard ri. you know what i'm talking about. the story is about what the redemptive power of friendship. here's some of how the cast described opening night and what it's like to be part of the global harry potter phenomenon. >> it was such an emotional moment when we got to the final bow in front of the audience. i was just overwhelmed. and i took time to savor that moment. >> you can't really break it down to one scene because the show is amazing and it's so fun to be a part of.

in the central part of the bay area. this is the view from the rooftop camera looking across the embark dare row. it's 56 in oakland, san jose, 51 in gilroy and 55 in half moon bay. temperatures in the low 50s in santa rosa, petaluma, fairfield, and liver more. one more live view of the golden gate bridge where there's not much traffic at this point but the pavement is wet. these are all forecast features, it'll be breezy overnight with periods of rain and isolated down por pours. messy morning commute is in store for all of us with slippery pavement. there could be pooling and ponding on roadways even as the storm seems to be weakening and the wet unsettled pattern will be with us through the week and into next week. the storm ranks one on a storm impact scale, light intensity. but overnight into early

tomorrow morning we can expect speerd periods of rain and showers. still chance of gusty wind ranging from 35 to 50-miles-per-hour at times. notice widely scattered showers. as the commute gets under way, we'll see more surges of energy and downpours. it'll be a slow and challenging morning commute. however into the midday hours we'll see the sun breaking through and the storm will break up a bit with pockets of widely scattered showers. so, it's not going to be a completely wet or a completely calm day, just sort of a mixed bag going into the late night hours tomorrow night. we'll see scattered showers. high wind warning effect for the coastal areas south of the golden gate until 3:00 a.m. a wind advisory in effect for the same time period until 3:00 a.m. once again strongest gusts will be about 40 to 50-miles-per-hour. there's a possibility of downed trees and power lines, maybe

isolated power outages. flash flood watches in effect until 3:00 a.m. for those north bay locations that are part of the burn scar area from the kincade fire and we expect storm totals there to be in the three to four inch rain which could produce localized flooding. in the sierra we have a winter storm warning in effect until thorm morning. snow totals will be two feet or higher. we expect hazardous travel conditions. expect delays and road closures. overnight lows mainly in the upper 40s to low # 50s. highs tomorrow around 55 or 60 degrees. it's not going to be rainy all day every day. we might see a break late wednesday and early thursday. however we expect some period of rain or showers every day in the seven day forecast period.

the stormy weather is putting a damper on holiday cheer by causing a christmas tree shortage. abc 7 news was at fort mason in san francisco where the guardsmen were selling christmas trees. it's a non-profit organization that raises money to send at risk youth to summer camp. the trees didn't make it due to the weather so they had to get it from other places. >> i'm allergic to trees. >> what? >> you have to have a synthetic

area today. we'll be seeing more wet weather as the week wears on especially for tomorrow's commute. hundreds of people were left without power in santa clara for almost 24 hours because of heavy winds. that wind knocked down scaffolding from a construction site that hit power lines last night leaving several block in the dark. more than 2,600 customers cost power. and concord police are investigating a deadly officer involved shooting. it happened on oasis drive just before noon today. police opened fire on a 60-year-old man they say was straddling his elderly mother while wielding a knife. they tried talking to him earlier when his elderly parents called to report his behavior. the impeachment showdown enters a new phase this week. the intelligence committee is expected to vote on its report tuesday evening. its chairman claims the report shows the president abused his office for political gain and

leveraged military aid for investigations into his political rivals. the house judiciary committee begins its hearings on wednesday. the president today refused an invitation to participate saying he'll be at a nato meeting in europe. democrats are aiming for a final house vote by christmas. this week the supreme court is taking up a gun rights they'll hear arguments that began as prohibition on carrying a licensed locked and loaded unloaded hand gun outside the city limits. the rule was already repealed in july, but the justices are taking up the case anyway. this has concerned gun control advocates who fear the courts conservative majority could use the case to question gun restrictions across the country. we move to the mass shooting in new orleans. ten people were shot. it all happened near the french quarter where football fans had gathered for the bayou classic football game. additional officers were just a

few feet away when they heard the first shots. >> they were there when it occurred. they were right there when it occurred. they heard the shots. they were under the impression they may have been fired upon because the shots were so close. >> officers swarmed the scene within seconds finding victims on the ground. ten people were taken to local hospitals, two listed in critical condition. police took a person of interest into custody near the scene, but it's unclear if that person was involved. passengers from a norwegian cruise ship are being treated for flu-like symptoms for the second time in a week. the los angeles fire department says patients were evaluated after the ship reached los angeles today. all of today's patienttoday's pt treatment but six patients earlier this week were diagnosed with norvirus. new developments with the stabbing of former oakland

raider terrell pryer. reports say pryor knocked down one woman as another woman. the woman accused of stabbing him is facing an attempted homicide charge. the second woman was hurt, but it is not clear what her role in the case is. pryor is expected to recover. he has not played since being let go by the jacksonville jaguars in september. the paradise high school football team's dream season came to an end last night. the sectional championship game came a year after the campfire ripped through the town. the city is coming back slowly, but it's moments like this that keep the community together. suter defeated the paradise team 20 to 7. but despite the loss, many there see the team as the heart beat of their community. >> these guys just keep coming, man. it's been awesome to see them ou nityan just loves their team. >> these kids and all of us went through, this makes a statement
