good evening. thank you for joining us. tonight, the british royal family scrambling to contain a growing scandal. a new interview with the woman accusing prince andrew of sexual abuse, headlines about the royal whose own defense of his ties with a convicted sex offender is drawing increasing backlash. here's abc's maggie rulli. >> i'd just been abused by a member of the royal family. so when you talk about these chains, you know, yeah, i wasn't chained to a sink. but these powerful people were my chains. >> reporter: this is the interview the palace has been dreading. virginia roberts giuffre in her own words talking to bbc panorama about prince andrew. >> in the car ghislaine tells me that i have to do for andrew what i do for jeffrey. and that made me sick. i just didn't expect it from

royalty. >> reporter: giuffre alleges the financier and convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein and his former girlfriend ghislaine maxwell directed her to have sex with queen elizabeth's son in 2001 when she was only 17. >> this is not some sordid sex story. this is a story of being trafficked. this is a story of abuse. and this is a story of your guys's -- your guys's royalty. >> reporter: prince andrew has denied all her claims. in this bbc interview from november he maintains he has no re collection of giuffre and never had sex with her. >> i can absolutely, categorically tell you it never happened. >> reporter: the interview was widely viewed as a disaster for prince andrew and the palace. >> do i regret the fact that he has quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming? yes. >> unbecoming? he was a sex offender. >> yeah. i'm sorry. i'm being polite. >> reporter: the prince's interview threw the british

royal family into further turmoil in what had already been a difficult year. >> what was your first take on that interview that prince andrew gave? >> the prince andrew interview was simply a car crash. he was obviously not media trained, obviously had no idea what he was doing, and was tone deaf. >> reporter: the fallout was swift and brutal for prince andrew, who is eighth in line to the british throne. he had to step back from royal duties and reportedly moved his offices out of buckingham palace. >> he has paid essentially the ultimate price professionally. he's had to step back from his public duties. he's lost his public role. >> reporter: once known in british circles as the party prince, now prince andrew has become a pariah. >> i find it hard to see how he can come back from this now. >> reporter: prince andrew's ill-fated friendship with jeffrey epstein back in 1999, when ghislaine maxwell, an old friend of the prince, introduced them. >> but he had the most extraordinary ability to bring extraordinary people together. and that's the bit that i remember, is going to the dinner

parties where you would meet academics, politicians, people from the united nations. i mean, it was a cosmopolitan group of what i would describe as u.s. eminence. >> reporter: prince andrew stayed with epstein at his properties in new york and palm island in the caribbean. he also flew on his private jet. the two even remaining friends after epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to two felony prostitution charges. he was being investigated for allegedly abusing more than 30 underaged girls. as part of his plea epstein registered as a sex offender. >> federal prosecutors had already prepared a 53-page draft indictment that could have put epstein behind bars for decades. and instead he got this deal just pleading to these prostitution charges and ultimately serving 13 months. >> reporter: earlier this year epstein died of an apparent suicide in jail, awaiting trial for child sex trafficking charges. the prince has said he never witnessed any of the criminal

conduct that epstein was convicted or accused of. but giuffre says that epstein and maxwell were the ones who set her up with prince andrew at a club called the tramp. >> he is the most hideous dancer. and this guy was sweating all over me. like his sweat was, it was raining basically everywhere, and i was just like grossed out from that. but i knew i had to keep him happy because that's what jeff sxri ghislaine would expect from me. >> reporter: giuffre alleges maxwell recruited her when she was just 16 and then groomed her to become jeffrey epstein's teenage sex slave. in court filings and a defamation claim against maxwell giuffre claims she ordered him to have sex with some of his powerful friends including on three occasions prince andrew. maxwell is not facing any criminal charges in this case and has insisted that all of giuffre's allegations including those about prince andrew are false. >> the royals live or die by the court of public opinion. the court of public opinion has already spoken. he's no longer doing royal

duties. his whole life's work has ended. >> reporter: in a statement in response to bbc panorama buckingham palace said the duke unequivocally regrets his ill judged association with jeffrey epstein and deeply sympathizes with those affected who want some form of closure. adding they said "it is emphatically denied that the duke of york had any form of sexual contact or relationship with virginia roberts. any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation." giuffre, whose maid enname is roberts, is now a 35-year-old mother. she says this picture of the two of them together backs up her account of what happened. >> he knows what happened. i know what happened. and there's only one of us telling the truth and i know that's me. >> nobody can prove whether or not -- that that photograph has been doctored. but i don't recollect that photograph ever being taken. >> he's questioned the authenticity of the photograph of them together. she is adamant that it's real.

and there has been in sort of concrete evidence really that it has been tampered with. so nothing kind of really concrete to support the claims that he makes there. >> at the least what he's done is provided fuel to the fire of people who are saying he should be held accountable in some way. >> reporter: the scandal comes when the royal family's facing intense scrutiny on the heels of this itv documentary on prince harry and meghan markle. >> i never thought that this would be easy, but i thought it would be fair. >> of course there's a lot of stuff that hurts. especially when the majority of it is untrue. >> reporter: which laid bare in remarkable fashion the extreme pressures the new parents were under. >> not many people have asked if i'm okay. but it's -- it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes. >> would it be fair to say not really okay? it's really been a struggle? >> yes. >> reporter: and seemingly confirmed a rift between harry and his brother william. >> we're certainly on different paths at the moment, but i will

always be there for him and as i always know he will be there for m me. >> the prince andrew situation is horrifying on many levels. the royals have moved to shut it down. the bigger risk to the monarchy is actually the unhappiness of meghan and harry. meghan and harry, they symbolize the future of the monarchy. prince rnd of course does not. >> the family that has been tested before enduring abdication, public divorces and princess diana's tragic death at the age of 36, through it all the monarchy has endured. now its future seemingly secured by diana's popular sons. >> i don't think that anyone is looking at this scenario and thinking differently about william and harry, for example, because of this. but these things do have an impact on how the institution is perceived, how the monarchy is perceived, how it is spoken about. >> reporter: queen elizabeth was photographed recently with prince andrew riding around windsor castle. a public show of support for her second oldest son.

sing in spanish still struggle to be given the same platform as the ones that sing in english. why do you think that is here in the u.s. when latinos are a big part of this country? >> when i started doing music, it was a lot worse. like they would not under no circumstances program a latin record. that's definitely changing. i remember when i began putting out music as a solo artist i already had that vision, that concept of collaborating with artists like usher and drake but bringing them into my latin world. >> when we're talking about romeo santos we're talking about probably one of the ten best >> reporter: ultimately revolutionizing and modernizing the genre of bachata by turning to his heritage. it's a style of music originating from the dominican republic. most of the lyrics deeply romantic and nostalgic. >> the dominican community in new york really embraced bachata

always. and what happened in the early 2000s is some young people decided they wanted to update the music. >> reporter: santos together with his cousin and friends formed a band called aventura and brought a fresh urban appeal to the genre. >> when aventura came out it sounded like nothing else. ♪ and basically fundamentally altered the course of what bachata sounded like but also what american music broadly construed could embrace. >> we embraced bachata because we had the sounds from here. we grew up listening to rock music, hip-hop. so we threw hip-hop beats into the bachata. like a lot of fusions. >> reporter: by the age of 21 after years of writing music and performing wherever they could they landed their first hit with "obsesion." swag that we

have when we're together. i don't want to sound corny but we're like the power rangers together. >> reporter: after a decade of worldwide success santos launched a solo career, but this time in an era where latin music is more popular than edm or country music, right here in the u.s. >> when we think about crossover, we're thinking of a '90s concept, we're thanksgiving of a 2000s concept. in 2019 moving into the 2020s with the seamlessness of social media crossing over's an outdated concept. >> reporter: according to spotify their viva latino playlist is growing five times faster than any other playlist in their top 1,000. >> look at the generation of stars we have now. look at bad bunny. ♪ look at j balvin. ♪ look at ozuna. these aren't people who are that concerned with speaking english. >> reporter: santos introducing english language artists to his world long before the industry

fully embraced it. >> at first they didn't get it. and when i say they didn't get it i'm not speaking about the fans but just like the industry. like it was very difficult to program a bachata tune in anglo radio stations. that's not the case now. like you hear songs like cardi b. and bad bunny's "i like it" in anglo radio. >> reporter: he's sold out madison square garden and yankee stadium twice, joining the ranks of madonna and sir paul mccartney. and now metlife stadium, one of the largest stadiums in the country. >> the fact that romeo can sell out all these venues should tell you something. it should tell you not that this is a flash in the pan, not that this is cheesy lowbrow music. it should tell you this is music base, and isn't going anywhere. >> i think i'm very lucky to have so many fans that love me and support me and especially after so many years.
