>> okay, so we're going to have some solutions ahead for everybody. first, we begin with the deadly storm still hitting the northeast dropping up to two feet of snow in some areas causing, as you can imagine, major accidents. at this hour the storm is targeting new england. gio benitez starts us off from there in boston. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. worst part of the storm appears to be falling right now. we have strong wind gusts what's causing such a problem. our wide angle camera here and you can start seeing that blowing snow all over the place. it's really piling up and that's because of these low temperatures. in fact, in parts of massachusetts, we have already seen between yesterday and today already a foot of snow. this is the famous conley square, this is packed with commuters, not today, so much of the northeast seeing whiteout conditions. this morning, state of emergency as a massive snowstorm slams the northeast.

the new york state thruway closing all lanes overnight after a truck and bus carrying 30 passengers collided in columbia county. new york state police say all passengers declined medical attention when emergency crews arrived on scene. governor cuomo mandating a state of emergency in seven new york counties. >> we're also going to call out 300 national guardsmen to be deployed in these seven counties where we need the most assistance. >> reporter: albany bearing the brunt of the long-lasting nor'easter as stalled cars litter i-90. this guardrail the only thing keeping this massive semi from tumbling down the hill. neighborhoods and vehicles completely buried under several feet of snow. in syracuse, crews working around the clock to clear the hazardous roadways. plow trucks moving mounds of snow out of the way. the big apple also getting a taste of this latest winter storm and in new jersey, power outages across the state. utility companies reporting as many as 35,000 outages. in massachusetts, residents attempting to clean up.

this strip mall parking lot turned into a winter desert. and here in massachusetts they've already closed hundreds of schools. they want to keep people off the road. officials are saying, if you don't have to leave the home don't do it. just looking here in copley square, people appear to be heeding that warning. michael. >> thank you so much, gio. as you're outside, we'll go inside to rob who has the latest on where the storm is heading and when. good morning, rob. >> good morning, michael. just inland is where the snow is really piling up. this is about an hour west of boston, over a foot of snow falling in worcester. this is a heavy snow, right around the freezing mark, so snowplows digging out. albany seeing over 20 inches of snow, the biggest event they've had since 2003. now this coast to coast storm is a nor'easter and we're seeing eastern new england get peppered with snow. let's talk about this, boston, you could see another two to four inches of snow. gio mentioned the winds,

40-mile-per-hour winds there, new york city will see gusts as well. for the most part the snow is over here in new york city and it will be over in boston after lunchtime but winding up in maine with snows continuing through tonight. finally ending late tonight but temperatures will be below freezing so roads tomorrow morning will be slick. robin. >> got to keep that in mind. okay, rob. as the impeachment showdown plays out, president trump is in london for a high-stakes nato summit preparing to meet with the queen and our allies, and tensions are running high over brexit and a possible trade war between the u.s. and france. chief white house correspondent jon karl is there london with more. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the president kicked off his meetings here in london with an impromptu free-wheeling press conference and some harsh words aimed at president macron. this morning, the president turned what was supposed to be a quick photo-op with the head of nato into a nearly hour-long press conference. asked about recent comments by french president macron that

nato is becoming brain dead, he hit back hard. >> very, very nasty statement to essentially 28 -- including them, 28 countries. you just can't go around making statements like that about nato. it's very disrespectful. >> reporter: but later in a face to face meeting with macron, the president struck a more diplomatic tone. >> we have done a lot of good things together as partners. our countries have been partners in many good ventures. >> reporter: in the past, president trump has boasted of his warm relationship with macron and has had his own harsh words towards nato. >> nato is obsolete, it's old, it's fat and sloppy. >> reporter: the trump administration is now threatening tariffs of up to 100% worth of french imports including wine, cheese and handbags. >> they're starting to tax other people's products, so, therefore, we're going to tax them. >> reporter: the new tariffs are retaliation against new french taxes targeting u.s. tech companies like apple and google.

>> i'm not in love with those companies. i want to tax those companies. they're not going to be taxed by france. if anyone is going to take advantage of the american companies it's going to be us. >> reporter: as president trump takes the world stage, the drive by house democrats with impeachment is clearly on his mind. >> does it cast a cloud? well if it does, then the democrats have done great disservice to the country. >> reporter: for his part, macron was diplomatic, too. regarding the threat of a trade war, the president referred to it as a minor dispute and predicted a rosy outcome. george. george. >> jon, thanks very much. it is a critical day for impeachment on capitol hill. the house intelligence committee

will release its report making the case against president trump before sending it to the house judiciary committee before their first hearings tomorrow. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce tracking the latest on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. democrats on the house intelligence committee this morning are putting the finishing touches on this report that is likely to be the basis for their impeachment case against the president. the public will get a look at it later today. we are told it's roughly 175 pages and is likely to conclude that the president abused his power by pressuring ukraine to investigate his rivals to try and get an advantage in the 2020 election. it is also likely to outline evidence of obstruction which democrats have said is overwhelming, george. >> mary, ahead of this we've seen the first republican prebuttal overnight also and it defends the president, holds the line with the president even though it's at odds with much of the witness testimony. >> reporter: yeah, george, republicans are picking over this same evidence to try to defend the president. they have released their own report which is dismissing much of the witness testimony so far as hearsay and presumption. they argue that the president was acting out of valid concerns in ukraine and they note that there's no specific evidence that the president was trying to benefit himself in the 2020 election.

democratic chairman adam schiff though not surprisingly says the republicans are ignoring much of the evidence. he has said that the republican report is, quote, intended for an audience of one. that one person being the president. >> and mary, phase two begins tomorrow in the house judiciary committee. that first hearing could be fiery. >> reporter: it could be fiery but it is also expected to be a bit of a civics lesson on impeachment. the witnesses are all legal scholars. this could be quite feisty. this hearing and this committee including some of the president's fiercest defenders. they are ready for a fight here tomorrow. in fact, george, both sides are holding mock hearings here later today. >> mary bruce, thanks very much. michael. >> all right, thank you, george. we have the latest on jimmy carter. the 95-year-old former president is back in the hospital this morning to treat an infection just days after a separate procedure on his brain. steve osunsami is outside the hospital in americus, georgia. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. president carter is of course 95. we should point out that he's

being treated at his local hospital, the hospital closest to his home. for more serious issues and serious health issues, he's usually treated at emory university hospital in atlanta. about three hours to the north of here. in a statement his spokesperson says that he was admitted here this past weekend to treat a uti. they say, quote, he's feeling better and looks forward to returning home soon. last week doctors at emory in atlanta sent him home to enjoy thanksgiving dinner after a risky surgery to reduce pressure from blood that built up over his brain after a number of recent falls at his home. after one of those falls that he suffered he actually suffered a black eye, but continued true to form to nashville where he then helped build houses for habitat for humanity. everyone here, of course, is looking forward to his speedy recovery. robin. >> as are we, steve, thank you. now to new orleans and the search for the gunman who wounded ten people on a crowded

street in the french quarter. police are investigating and there's dramatic new surveillance video that you're seeing showing the moment the shooting breaks out. victor oquendo is there in new orleans with more. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. police have been poring over that surveillance video and they now believe the people responsible are from louisiana but somewhere outside new orleans and this all started with some kind of feud. take a look at that video. it looks like someone pulled out a gun and started firing. ten victims total. five men, five women. the youngest victim just 16 years old. all but one right now in stable condition. this happened hours after a big football game. a weapon was recovered from the scene. so far no arrest. they continue asking the public to come forward with information. michael? >> thank you so much for that. now to the fallout from that bombshell new interview with prince andrew's accuser, virginia roberts giuffre, detailing the night she says

they met and what she was directed to do. james longman is at buckingham palace with the reaction this morning. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, michael. this is a scandal that will not go away for prince andrew. he is once again front-page news here. virginia roberts giuffre has spoken before but this is her first appearance on uk tv and she's making a direct appeal to the british public. this morning, all eyes on buckingham palace. virginia roberts giuffre who's claimed in court papers she was directed by jeffrey epstein to have sex with prince andrew several times, including twice while she was under age, asking the british people to hold the royal family to a higher standard. >> i implore the citizens in the uk to stand up beside me to help me fight this fight, to not accept this as being okay. this is not some sordid sex story. this is a story of being trafficked. this is a story of abuse. and this is a story of your guys' royalty.

>> reporter: giuffre describing to the bbc the night she says she first met the prince. andrew maintains he doesn't know her. >> he is the most hideous dancer i've ever seen in my life. i mean, it was horrible and this guy was sweating all over me. >> there's a slight problem with the sweating because i have a peculiar medical condition which is that i don't sweat or i didn't sweat at the time. >> reporter: giuffre says she was directed to have sex with prince andrew by ghislaine maxwell, epstein's former girlfriend, whom she accused of in court filings of grooming her to be a teenage sex slave. maxwell previously denied the allegations and has not been charged with any crime. >> that made me sick. i just didn't expect it from royalty. i didn't expect it from someone that people look up to and admire, you know, in the royal family. it was a really scary time in my life.

i had just been abused by a member of a royal family. i couldn't comprehend how in the highest levels of the government and powerful people were allowing this to happen, not only allowing it to happen but participating in it. >> reporter: giuffre also blasting andrew's suggestion that this now-infamous photo of the two of them which she says was taken by epstein was faked. >> the people on the inside are going to keep coming up with these ridiculous excuses. he knows what happened. i know what happened and there's only one of us telling the truth and i know that's me. >> reporter: now, prince andrew has already been forced to step back from his royal duties after his own interview was so badly received. this appearance from miss roberts will not help him return any time soon. michael. >> thank you so much, james. george. we're going to go to chicago now where the mayor has fired retiring police superintendent eddie johnson saying he lied about an incident where he was found passed out in his car. alex perez is in chicago with the latest. >> reporter: this morning,

chicago's top cop out of a job fired just days after an inspector general report found what mayor lori lightfoot calls a series of ethical lapses. >> i'm announcing that i terminated eddie johnson's employment as superintendent of the chicago police department for cause effective immediately. >> reporter: lightfoot says the new report which included video evidence found johnson lied after an incident in october when officers found him in a parked police vehicle asleep at the wheel. >> he intentionally misled the people of chicago and he intentionally misled me. >> reporter: at the time, during a press conference, johnson claimed he had not taken his blood pressure medication. >> your body kind of gives you a warning with the high blood pressure thing that you may pass out. so i pulled over, stopped, and i just rested myself until that feeling passed. >> reporter: but on monday after reviewing his claims, the city's mayor decided to expedite his dismissal.

this morning, "the chicago tribune" reporting that the surveillance footage shows him drinking, quote, for a few hours prior to the incident with a woman who is not his wife. the mayor declined to be more specific about the videotaped evidence hinting it could be hurtful to johnson's family. >> we require a leader whose actions reflect the virtues of integrity, honor, and legitimacy, the touchstones of what it takes to have the privilege of being a chicago police officer. >> reporter: johnson in the spotlight earlier this year during the jussie smollett case, accusing the actor of lying to his officers. chicago's violent crime rate dropped under johnson. last month with the mayor by his side he unexpectedly announced he was retiring. the mayor now regretting that appearance. >> had i known these facts at the time i would have relieved him of his duties as superintendent then and there. i certainly would not have participated in a celebratory press conference to announce his retirement. >> reporter: former l.a. police

that support for gabrielle union has snowballed in e past week in light of her controversial termination from "america's got talent." and now s.a.g, the union, is involved investigating the circumstances that led to the termination. >> let's see what you got. >> reporter: this morning nbc has reportedly launched an internal investigation after reports that actress gabrielle union was fired from the show, "america's got talent," after complaining of racism and other on-set issues. >> what we all just witnessed here tonight was nothing short of absolute brilliance. >> reporter: the investigation comes after "variety" magazine released a report claiming union had complained of a toxic culture at the show. insiders say the company labeled union as difficult. >> nbc and a third-party counselor that they've hired will attempt to meet with gabrielle and hear her specific grievances. once that happens, i think that there is a very good chance that nbc will launch a formal investigation. >> reporter: according to "variety," the insider says union is set to meet with nbc to gather information about the

complaints, some including racially insensitive comments and excessive criticism about her appearance. the screen actors guild is also looking into the allegation saying we take issues of workplace health and safety very seriously. one specific incident involves former late-night host jay leno reportedly making a racially insensitive joke in front of four other staffers. on his radio show, former america's got talent host, howard stern, was critical of simon cowell, the show's creator and judge, over his decision to fire union and her co-host, julianne hough. >> he has set it up the men stay no matter how old they are, no matter how fat they are, no matter how ugly they are, no matter how talentless they are. >> reporter: the "bring it on" star has received support from fellow actresses. ellen pompeo tweeting, i support gabrielle union's commitment to speaking up to injustice. it takes courage. and debra messing, whose show is

this is a serious problem. we're all buying stuff online. the u.s. postal service one of the delivery options is projecting 800 million deliveries between thanksgiving and new year's. those packages prime targets for thieves. >> hey, get away. >> reporter: they're devious. >> hey, put that down. >> reporter: sneaky. and they're ready to spoil your holiday season. porch pirates who steal packages from your front stoop. >> hey, put th back. >> reporter: and those thefts are on the rise. according to consumer affairs reports, almost 26 million packages from the united states postal service, fedex and u.p.s. were reported stolen last year alone. that's 2.5 million more than in 2015. and this year, with more people shopping online than ever before, people are fighting back. including one amazon delivery person. the boynton beach police department released video of a suspt one driver says followed

her truck this weekend and then stole a package after she dropped it off. she called 911. >> as soon as they saw me coming around the corner and i saw them with the box, they flew down the road. >> reporter: in round rock, texas, one police station creating operation front porch. instead of risking theft at your home you have your packages sent to the police station for pickup. >> we'll store and categorize and ask you to pick it up within three days. >> reporter: homeowners are getting creative too. one former nasa engineer booby trapped fake packages including a sparkly surprise. when this would-bepirate loads this box into his car, he's greeted by a glitter explosion followed by a foul smell that has him throwing his stolen booty right out the window. this couple after falling victim to a theft last year creating the porch pirate lockbox which bolts to your deck. >> you come home, you unlock it

and your packages are there. >> reporter: and according to a survey recently conducted by "the new york times," more than 1.7 million packages are stolen or go missing around the country. it's become such a problem that some states are trying to pass new laws. in texas package thieves could face up to ten years in prison, and in my home state of south carolina a bill there would make stealing a package a felony. >> you said it was a story of thieves. somebody stole a big box of kitty litter. >> kitty litter. it was a giant amazon box. turned out to be kitty litter. >> what are you in here for? kitty litter. >> how do you get the packages in that big red box? >> it's locked. >> you are on it today. you are just on it. >> okay. we have some video of a 9-year-old boy's close encounter with a surf knocked from a surfboard but didn't realize what sent him flying. paula faris has that.

>> good morning, george. he actually continued to surf for another 30 minutes. he thought it was just a large fish that knocked him off his board and it wasn't until he and his father looked at the gopro video afterwards that they realized it was indeed a shark. watch as 7-year-old chandler shreds waves at a florida beach with his dad when a shark suddenly jumps out of the wear and over his board sending him flailing into the water. but chandler didn't even realize what caused him to fall. >> i was just assuming that push was a fish but when we got back into the video, it was a shark. >> at first we were kind of shocked and surprised and we kind of had a little laugh and then it kind of set in that we got pretty lucky that he didn't get, you know, bit. you know, new smyrna is unfortunately known for its shark attack bites. >> reporter: just earlier this year, a 9-year-old girl was bitten in an apparent shark attack at that same florida beach. a parent's worst nightmare but for the moores it's just the name of the game.

first, we have a lot of news to get to starting with that snowstorm slamming the northeast. heavy snow and ice. new england, well, they're getting hit, so let's go back to gio benitez who is there in boston and how are things going now, gio? good morning. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning again. yeah, all morning long we have been seeing this blowing snow and that's because we have those high wind gusts, strong wind gusts. we've seen wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour in parts of massachusetts. take a look at this wide angle lens camera here. you can see some of that blowing snow. copley square right now not as busy as it normally is. people are staying indoors. but you can just see how the snow is really starting to pile up. in parts of massachusetts we've seen more than a foot of snow between yesterday and today, and this stuff can be messy because -- especially when you're looking at the roads. take a look at what we saw overnight in columbia county, new york. there was a big crash between a truck and a bus carrying 30 people. thankfully those 30 people said that they didn't need y medical attention but this is

like never before, telling the magazine about her struggles with mental health and going through menopause. >> i struggle with depression and anxiety. i realized that about two years ago. i noticed the mood swings like you know one day i'd be up, the next day i'd be down. >> reporter: henson at first she didn't realize some of those mood swings could be related to menopause saying, quote, i would get so low, really, really low, beaten like never before. >> she said that she would usually be the life of the party but she wouldn't want to go out and see her friends and her friends started noticing a change in her behavior. with her anxiety she would get heart palpitations and she really understood that it was more than yoga and meditation could fix. >> reporter: the actress learned how to manage those highs and lows with regular check-ins with her therapist and herself. >> i talk to myself. i think more people need to talk to themselves because you work things out. >> reporter: now through her nonprofit, the boris lawrence henson foundation named after her father, henson is working to help others struggling with mental health issues especially

amazing story about not only what we do here as veterinarians but what all of disney does and it's been a really awesome project to be involved with. >> reporter: dr. natalie gave me a peek at the next generation during perry's ultrasound. >> that's a paw. there's a baby porcupine in there, perry. >> count the heartbeat to make sure that everything looks healthy. we need to make sure the baby is moving normally, that the size is appropriate. and sometimes ultrasounds will help us understand if they're getting close to birth so we can see the position of the baby. >> reporter: and i got some hands-on experience as a disney vet. >> whoa. it feels like fingernails kind of. is it keratin? >> it is, yeah. that's what it is, modified hair. >> modified hair, frosted tips here. you're very cute and you're having a very cute baby at some point soon which is great. adding to the disney family. >> reporter: for "good morning america," at walt disney world resort in orlando, florida, will reeve, abc news. some of my friends' mothers and grandmothers as they passed away my friends would, you know, go through their things and they discovered machine guns in trunks and three of my friends discovered that their mothers had been major spies during the war. >> wow. >> can you imagine? >> i thought it was really exciting so it inspired the book. [ applause ] >> so, we're among friends. were you a spy? >> no, but i think it would be terrific. >> you wouldn't tell us even if you were. but no, no, no. you are a -- thank you for continuing to share your gift with the world like this. [ applause ] you write multiple books at a time. how do you do that? >> i have no idea. it's got to be a form of insanity of some kind.

[ laughter ] but i work on one at a time. i can't sort of switch chapters. i think twice i made a mistake and put a character in the wrong book. i work at 4:00 in the morning and sometimes i work all night and suddenly the person was in the wrong book. it's like, oops. i have to get you back over here. [ laughter ] but i work on a lot in different stages and it takes a long time to write one of them. so i juggle. it's kind of like a juggling act. and i feel very lucky and very blessed that i enjoy what i do and that you all read it and i'm super grateful to you. [ applause ] super grateful to you. >> but it was very sweet because, you know, the young author that we just had here told me walking out and she was so excited to meet you and her mother talked about how she's read many of your books. >> i know. very nice. >> you relate to men, women.
