hit-and-run in fremont has many concerned with safety in that part of town. tonight fremont city council is considering some improvements. it's an unlikely matchup. b.a.r.t. and the salvation army teaming up this holiday season. we'll tell you why. the storms on the move. be prepared for a wet commute. i'll have an hour by hour time line coming up. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. we're seeing scattered showers around the bay area tonight. this is live look from our exploratorium camera. >> but get ready heavier rain is on the way. let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel who is tracking the system. >> get ready for a slow and slippery ride. you will notice some showers are coming in the south as we get you into the santa cruz area, gilroy, monterey road, street level radar showing you wet

weather right now. and it is moving from northwest. breezy in spots. as you take a look at the hour by hour forecast you see those showers moving in 5:00 to 8:00 a.m. it is going to be wet out there for the commute. and even beyond that. i'll be back with an hour by hour forecast for the rest of that one and a look at the next storm coming up. the wet weather is blamed fo causing a small landslide in san bruno. it's led to a stretch being closed off to traffic and pedestrians. the city says no homes are threatened but a local emergency has been declared. >> you can track the storm with the abc 7 news app. you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablets. it was a packed house in fremont tonight to discuss efforts to build a better bay

area. >> the city council debated making changes to a stretchf road. >> the driver stopped briefly but then took off. these are new pictures of the suspect's car what appears to be a late model 1990 buick0 buick >> the city council is niles boulevard. not everyone is onboard with some of the proposals being tossed around. >> reporter: that's right, dan. good evening, but the majority of city council do support the changes. in fact, city council officials say there's a heightened level of urgency getting these straee changes done given friday's fatal hit-and-run. >> ever since the 50s we've traded safety for speed.

>> reporter: he's with a group concerned with biking safety. they point to friday night's fatal hit-and-run that killed 72-year-old susan hit in a crosswalk on niles boulevard. >> clearly niles boulevard has been a priority and with the recent incident it rises to the top of the list. >> reporter: the two areas of discussion are niles boulevard and rancho parkway. the proposals include reducing lanes, creating bike lanes, and putting a travel light at rock avenue, the site of friday night's natal accident. >> there's an urgency to it because too many people have died this year. we're actually on a record pace this year. >> reporter: but those opposed say there's too many changes being proposed. >> we thought we were doing a great thing but we heard a lot of concern from the community this was a very bold and drastic change. >> reporter: those who spoke against the changes say more

streetlights and signs and stronger enforcement of the current speed limit could do more. >> instead of you spend a fraction of the money on one more police officer to spend more time on traffic enforcement. now, that would be a solution. >> reporter: now, despite what the opponents have to say the city says they hope to put out bids by the spring and want construction to begin by the summer of 2020. >> thanks a lot. abc 7 news devoted a week of our building a better bay area coverage to fremont, the bay area's fourth largest city. you can see all of our reports online. new at 11:00, a man who helped negotiate a naming rights deal for the oakland colosseum is facing criminal charges. he's accused of viatg ofnteres. the agency eventually struck a

deal with ring central. new developments in the kate steinle murder trial and a request to dismiss all charges. an undocumented immigrant was back in court today. two years ago he was acquitted of all but a gun charge in the shooting death of steinle at san francisco's pier 14. the sole conviction was overturned by an appeals court who said a judge improperly instructed jurors. today a judge asked the district attorney to not re-try him. a decision is expected tomorrow. we'll let you know. he still faces federal weapons charges. it's the first night for closures at the tunnel. tomorrow night eastbound bore 2 will be closed followed by westbound bore 3. to 4:30 a.m. abc 7 news as you know is committed to building a better

bay area, and it's no sec very messy. but messy we're referring to human and animal waste. it is so visible in the tenderloin district it's nicknamed code brown. to fix the neighborhood's problem there's a plan to steam clean and pressure wash every single block once a week. it is being paid for by property owners who agreed to an extra tax. >> we see how much is being done and you see the groups that are here and helping it's something we always think about. >> this is part of a two pronged approach. san francisco recently extended a pilot program for 24 hour bathrooms. a major part of building a better bay area includes finding solutions to tough issues. this year b.a.r.t. is teaming up with an unlikely partner to lend a helping hand. >> reporter: it's an interesting matchup. b.a.r.t. teaming with the

salvation army to help the homeless this holiday season. b.a.r.t. says on any given day there are 100 people or more who are homeless riding the trains. the program may help them. it's a sound you've likely never heard before inside a b.a.r.t. station. salvation army red kettle bell ringers haven't been allowed to collect donations inside stations until now. >> it makes a lot of sense. >> reporter: the long time charity teaming up with b.a.r.t. this holiday season to help the homeless. >> all 48 of our stations are going to have red kettles and bell ringers. >> b.a.r.t.'s president acknowledghat many riders already know. homelessness is an issue on a.b.r.t. stations. abc 7 nsge has u in the system that really need support to be housed and have drug treatment

the college admission scandal. mastermind rick singer reportedly approached seven stanford coaches over the last decade. that's according to a just released investigation by stanford. only one of the coaches has been accused accepting bribes. stanford says it has enacted new policies in the wake of the scandal. a major shakeup today at alphabet, google's parent company. founders larry page and sergey brin are stepping aside. >> on the other hand they have taken an obvious step back, and that's been going on for several years. >> the move comes as google faces mounting scrutiny over its business and

words of warning tonight after a close call happens to her family. a thanksgiving meal became a near disaster. >> i think there was a series of events here that unfolded that made this a very fortunate near miss. >> reporter: 13 of her family members ages 3 to 70 got sick shortly after arriving. they first thought it was altitude sickness. turns out they were all treated for carbon monoxide.

also with deep gratitude that i am suspending our campaign today. my campaign for president simply does not have the financial resources to continue. >> she announced her intentions to seek the white house back in january in oakland, her hometown. harris did well in the early debates but could not keep the momentum going. her campaign volunteers found out today and one of them told abc news the california senator was easy to relate to. >> when my daughters look at her, they see themselves. they are seen. they are heard as women of color. >> with harris bowing out, that leaves 15 candidates with the iowa caucuses just two months away. the next debate is december 19th. at least six candidates have qualified. elizabeth warren, bernie sanders, pete buttigieg, amy klobuchar and tom steyer. the impeachment spotlight shifts to the house judiciary committee tomorrow.

the moisture is coming in from the south. it is pushing towards the northwest. san jose, willow glen around campbell we are seeing some slig light showers. that moisture is moving. heading towards sunny veil 11:09 into fremont at 11:27 p.m. so you get the drift here that wet weather is heading in your direction. when you take a look at this system, it's been spinning off the coastline. we're seeing some thunderstorms developing southwest of monterey. it is taking its moisture into southern california but the stuff is wrapping around this low, and that's why we are expecting the showers to increase as we head towards your morning commute. numbers rights now in the 40s, 50s, a live look from our east bay hills camera and visibility is good. it's not going to look like that for the morning. wet for the morning commute, a stronger storm arrives on friday. this one is a 1 on our storm impact scale. through tomorrow light moderate showers. anywhere from 0.9 to 0.16 o

rain for you. here is 5:00 a.m., some pockets of moderate rain indicated in yellow so we are going to be dealing with a wet morning commute. you may want to set your alarm clocks a little earlier and get going earlier because it's going to take you longer to get to where you need to go and at 10:00 a.m. the activity starts to diminish a bit but still going to see some showers out there. this continues into 3:00 p.m., spottier in nature going into the evening hours and winds down later on tomorrow night. rainfall totals will reflect the direction of the moisture. nta rosa, you may not get a whole lot. in the mountains as the next storm comes in on friday, we have a winter storm watch 4:00 p.m. friday until 1:00 p.m. sunday. 1 to 3 feet of snow expected. higher amounts over the peaks

a little boy really wanted to get a toy out of a claw machine. who doesn't though, right? well, the child got trapped after he climbed inside and firefighters had to come and rescue him. you can see that boy was just surrounded by plush toys while the crews broke the lock on the machine's glass door to free him. he wasn't injured, thankfully.
