now open again after being locked down for several hours today. an ambulance rushes to the hospital this afternoon in hawaii as unmarked police cars speed past people stopped at gates of joint base pearl harbor hi hickam. the base was put on lock down after reports of an active shooter. across from the harbor of the base was the pearl harbor national memorial. people in ships were told to shelter in place. one working at the base said he was hoping and praying everything was going to be okay. >> i heard a bunch of shots going off in the area, and we were told by my chief to hunker down and stay indoors. >> reporter: a sailor shot three department of defense sailor workers before taking his own life. >> i can also report the shooter who has been tentatively been identified as an active duty sailor assigned to uss columbia also deceased by a

self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: now looking into a possible motive and a weapon. >> december 7, 1941. >> reporter: this comes just days ahead of the 78th anniversary of the attack by japan that protelled the united states in world war ii. >> the role the shipyard played in world war ii is pretty well-known. this is certainly a tragedy for everyone. >> no doubt. we'll continue to bring you updates on this story here on abc 7 and on our mobile app and website abc7news.com. it was a scary few hours on highway 101 after heavy rainfall flooded the roads. chris, some drivers even had to be rescued. >> reporter: that's right. good evening. well, rain has let up here in the south bay, but earlier today flood advisories were issued for parts of monterey county, got

pretty bad near salinas near river road. a dramatic rescue of a car caught in the flood on highway 101 in monterey county. this was just one of a number of rescues that police had to respond to as drivers were trapped on the road. according to the monterey county sheriff's office water was 4 feet deep in some parts of the road from heavy rain full. it happened around 3:00 p.m. chp had to shutdown the highway in both directions. southbound reopened about 800 p.m. around that time mary tweeted she was moving around 50 miles an hour stuck on highway 101 because of the flood. we spoke to her on the phone. >> so i sat there for i think approximately 3 1/2 hours. i did see though on the 101 north that it looked like a lake on the other side of the lane. they hadn't opened it yet, but you could clearly see a large pool of standing water as we

were slowly driving by. >> reporter: no major injures have been reported but we do know some homes and a school were affected. we also got the latest from chp. northbound lanes are still shutdown with traffic being diverted to river road. those lanes are expected to be shutdown for the next couple of hours. now let's go to our meteorologist sandhya patel who's been tracking the rainfall. and as we take you back in time to the chular area there were thunderstorms that developed this afternoon and evening. and that's what dumped the heavy rain on saturated ground and caused the flooding. it is quiet now and in the bay area as well except for an isolated shower. as we pull out here i want to show you the next storm that is coming. this one is coming in more from the north, and it does have cold air associated with it. it is a level 2 for your friday, a moderate strength storm on our storm impact scale.

moderate to heavy rain expected, gusty winds, even a chance of thunder and minor roadway flooding is not out of the question with this storm. >> you can track the next storm with the abc 7 news app. you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet. one east bay city is taking steps to build a better bay area tonight. it follows a recent spike in home invasions in lafayette. a lot of people quite concerned. >> reporter: that's right, dan. tonight's special meeting wasn't your typical city council meeting. it was designed to be an open dialogue. and people who came out had a lot to say to the police chief. it's rare to have a home invasion in lafayette says the lafayette police chief especially so close together. >> prior to october about five residential burglaries for the year. between october and november we've now reached the number of

15. >> reporter: that includes the most recent a home robbery on the week of thanksgiving when three suspects armed with gun tied up two residents and made off with the valuables. tonight was a chance for the community to get involved and speak directly to the police chief. >> these last two robberies seemed to be much higher risk kind of robbers, people willing to go to a much different level. >> reporter: residents who spoke wanted answers for the spike in robberies. some discussed whether they want more police patrols. tom says he wanted an update but understands the police chief can't share much on an open investigation. >> it was very informational. i have to say i did appreciate the city counsel and chief of police coming. and being as open i guess they could have been. >> reporter: he reminded the crowd his department has an 85% solve rate in part due to community involvement. >> we get multiple calls a day

police released this photo. they say this incident all started over a haircut the barber gave her son. this happened at delta barbershop just before 4:00 tonight. police say she and the barber were arguing when she got into her car and drove right at the man. the car hit him and pushed him through the store's glass storefront. police say she and her son in tow took off in a blue the whole thing happened so fast police are asking anyone with information to please call them. the barber was taken to the hospital with major injuries. livermore police have arrested two people for human trafficking, pimping and other charges. the owner of the massage parlors elite foot and back and paradise foot and back along with three others in the region. police began this lengthy investigation last year after

it's dense in santa rosa. 2 1/2 miles in livermore, 2 miles in fairfield. definitely watch out as we are going to be seeing that for the morning commute. 40s, 50s on your temperatures. here's something i want to show you a time lapse. sun came down at 4:50 and it was absolutely gorgeous. you can see the clouds swirling around sutro tower, nice color there. you will get a break from the rain tomorrow so enjoy some clouds and sun. right now exploratorium camera showing you a foggy view as we look towards san francisco. you get that break from the rain tomorrow and then a level 2 storm comes in on friday. temperatures in the 40s, 50s across the region. visibility poor for parts of the bay area, so it may take you longer to get to work or your kids off to school. so keep that in mind. there will be plenty of cloud cover around, but at least we're not going to be seeing rain here in the bay area. it's important for the soil to dry out before the next storm

comes in so we don't have major problem. on our storm impact scale it's a level 2, a moderate strength storm. moderate to heavy rain expected on friday, gusty winds, possibility of thunder and minor roadway flooding not out of the question as rainfall rates intensify. early friday morning not much going on, maybe a shower or two, but the afternoon and evening that's going to be a messy commute. and as we head into sunday other than early morning showers, you pretty much get a break so the rest of your saturday afternoon and evening will be dry. expecting heavy snow, a possibility 1 to 3 feet, higher over the peaks. winter storm watch already posted 4:00 p.m. friday until 1:00 p.m. sunday, above 5,500 feet. travel will be tough and you will need those shades. it's a level 2 storm gusty and wet for friday.
