a massive chemical fire forced evacuations in northwest arkansas. you see that thick smoke there rose above a plastics plant in bentville. the ceo of united industrials says the flames started in a styrofoam storage area behind the building. an emergency air alert was put in place and workers at a nearby walmart were sent home. no one was hurt. a dangerous situation overnight for the helicopter crew from our station in los angeles. >> their chopper was damaged during flight. crew members say they heard a loud bang while flying east of downtown los angeles. the copter landed safely, no one was injured, but the damage has them saying they likely collided with a drone.

abc's richard cantu has more. >> reporter: joint base pearl harbor hickam in hawaii put on lockdown wednesday afternoon following reports of an active shooter. the suspect shot three civilian department of defense workers. >> i can confirm that there were three shooting victims. we have confirmed two are deceased, one is in stable condition in a local hospital. >> reporter: the incident occurring at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time. >> i can also report the shooter, who has tentatively been identified as an active duty sailor assigned to "uss columbia" is also deceased by apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: honolulu ems sending ambulances to the scene, also two dozen firefighters. base personnel alerted to the situation by text. >> all i saw was a bunch of cars, heard a bunch of shots going off in the area.

we were told by my chief to hunker down, stay indoors, just be safe. >> reporter: the entire base put on lockdown, backing up traffic ledding to hickam air force base. base security and naval investigative services investigating the incident. the shooting comes three days ahead of the anniversary of the japanese attack on pearl harbor that plunged the united states into world war ii. richard cantu, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to richard. the president has been briefed on the situation at pearl harbor. we'll continue to monitor that breaking story. we do turn to the other big story, the impeachment showdown taking a combative turn. >> three law professors handpicked by the democrats say there is no doubt the president abused his power. but the professor invited by the republicans argued there's not enough evidence and warned that democrats are rushing the case.

>> ask one witness apologized after mentioning the president's 13-year-old son to make a point. abc's terry moran has the details. >> reporter: it was a highly partisan and dramatic day. the first high-stakes hearing in the judiciary committee featuring constitutional scholars and the issue before the panel, does the evidence show that what president trump did on ukraine rises to the level of an impeachable offense? >> if we do not act to hold him in check now, president trump will almost certainly try again to solicit interference in the election for his personal political gain. >> but this is not an impeachment, this is just a simple railroad job and today's is a waste of time. >> reporter: right out of the gate three of the four scholars, the ones chosen by democrats, testified that the president should be impeached. >> and i just want to stress that if this -- if what we're talking about is not impeachable, then nothing is impeachable. >> if we cannot impeach a president who abuses his office for personal advantage, we no longer live in a democracy. that's why the framers created

the possibility of impeachment. >> the very idea that a president might seek the aid of horrified them. based on the evidentiary record, that is what president trump has done. >> reporter: but law professor jonathan turley, called by republicans, said he did not vote for trump but he is still trudged by the democrats' impeachment inquiry in an agitated time in our country. >> i get it. you're mad. the president's mad. my republican friends are mad. my democratic friends are mad. my wife is mad. my kids are mad. even my dog seems mad. >> reporter: he said democrats don't have the evidence they need. >> there's a difference between requesting investigations and a quid pro quo. you need to stick the landing on the quid pro quo. you need to get the evidence to support it.

it might be out there, i don't know, but it's not in this record. >> reporter: he added the democrats are rushing this. house speaker nancy pelosi urging house democrats quote are you ready? while vice president mike pence rallying republicans to turn up the heat on the democrats. back in that hearing room, republicans were furious when one of those law professors argued that the constitution does not make trump a king, driving the point home with a quip about the president's son. >> so while the president can name his son barron, he can't make him a baron. >> when you invoke the president's son's name here, when you try to make a little joke out of referencing barron trump, that does not lend credibility to your argument, it makes you look mean, it makes you look like you're attacking someone's family. the minor child of the president of the united states. >> reporter: professor pamela karlan did apologize about that quip about the president's son. the president himself is planning a scorched earth defense. he wants a full trial. the full month of january for it at least.

we're back and updating breaking news. a deadly shooting attack at the pearl harbor naval shipyard in hawaii. officials say a u.s. navy sailor fatally shot two civilian defense department employees and wounded a third, then the sailor, whose submarine was docked at the base, took his own-. a lockdown was put in place but that has been lifted. so far no word on possible motive.

we will keep tabs on that story throughout the morning. there is growing outrage also this morning over a new lawsuit filed by george zimmerman. >> zimmerman is the man who shot and killed unarmed florida teenager trayvon martin and was acquitted. he's suing trayvon's family and others for $100 million. >> here's abc's steve osunsami. >> not guilty. >> reporter: he was acquitted of killing an unarmed black teenager in a shooting many argued was racially motivated. george zimmerman and his lawyer are suing trayvon martin's family, their attorney, state police, and former state prosecutors, making the unsubstantiated claim that one of the witnesses at zimmerman's 2013 trial was a fake. in a lawsuit filed in florida, they paint a grand conspiracy and are asking for $100 million, arguing that the young woman who testified that she was on the phone with trayvon martin as he was being killed was a fraud, coached by prosecutors and martin's family. >> he said, why are you
