follow every administration. >> reporter: the speaker didn't discuss the scope of the articles of impeachment or the time line. the democrats want to move quickly. with this announcement, house speaker pelosi has set up for a possible vote before christmas. >> thanks very much. let's bring in kate shaw for more on this right now. interesting when the speaker opened her remarks she rooted them in the declaration of the independen independence. >> she's sish yating this in the context of the historical important of our democracy, leaders not being kings or monarchs, that was a theme that you heard quite a bit from law scholars yesterday. it lists a number of offenses that are charged against the monarch. she's creating -- making clear this is a moment of very historical significance.

>> she used the phrase abuse of power three times. clearly that's one article of impeachment. she didn't get in obstruction or how far they'll go. >> she seemed to me to be using very broad language. opening the possibility the articles might encompasses not only the ukraine affair the 2016 russian interference, the mueller investigation, her abuse of power, solicitation of foreign interference. you can imagine articles that identify those political episodes both around 2016 and the ukraine affair and 2020. >> we did hear from jonathan turley a republican witness yesterday who said democrats should wait, they need the testimony of people like secretary of state mike pompeo, rudy giuliani, the president's lawyer, that won't happen any

time fast. that's the dilemma that democrats have. >> there's no doubt that the democrats would like to hear from all of these people. the white house has so far stone walled access to the most critical witnesses. i think the democrats have said, we're going to build an obstruction article, obstruction of congress. prevented us from doing a thorough investigation. some of it is still playing out in court. some of it could materialize perhaps in time for a senate trial. >> right, you would need 51 votes in the senate to approve any new witness. >> the democrats don't have it, conceivable that they could attract republicans to hear from additional witnesses. it's a little bit hard to see that happening. i think things are very much dynamic and fluid in the senate let's go to michael.

now to that deadly shooting at pearl harbor. >> good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: we're just outside the historic base at pearl harbor. these gates now reopened. on lockdown yesterday. a u.s. sailor opened fire striking three department of defense employees. overnight a deadly shooting at pearl harbor. an active duty sailor opening fire at the historic naval base's shipyard shooting three civilian contractors before turning the gun on himself. two of those workers were killed and one 36-year-old man is recovering this morning. reports of a shooting at the joint base pea wednesday afternoon, and

authorities say, within minutes, it went into a lockdown and shelter in place. >> joint base pearl harbor security personnel were on the scene within minutes. >> reporter: jasper williams says he was sitting at his desk nearby and witnessed the rampage. >> i looked out in time to see the shooter, who was i'm assuming he was a sailor because he was in uniform. i'm kind of thinking it might have been engineers based on the color of the hard hats. >> reporter: police are not releasing the identities of the victims and shooter, but they're saying the shooter was an act ive duty sailor. but he was assigned to the "uss columbia" undergoing repairs. christian castillo was there. >> i heard a bunch of shots in the area. we were told by my chief to hunker down. >> reporter: this just three days away from the 78th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. >> generations of locals have worked in that shipyard. this is certainly a tragedy for everyone here. >> reporter: authorities say it's not immediately clear if the shooter knew his victims and there's no understanding at this time of the sailor's motives. there is a full investigation under way by the navy and the base here at pearl harbor.

george? okay, kaylee, thanks very much. now to that headline about rudy giuliani's the president's personal attorney a key figure in the impeachment inquiry traveling overseas reportedly meeting with former ukrainian prosecutors. chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas is here in the studio with more. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning to you. rudy giuliani may be a key figure in the impeachment hearings but he's not cooperating with them and his business dealings with ukraine are being investigated by the southern district of new york. but that's not stopping giuliani from reportedly traveling to ukraine and continuing his work that is under now so much scrutiny. this morning, rudy giuliani adding to his resume, former mayor, lawyer to the president, and now documentarian. at a time when some of his international associates are being investigated and his work for the president is part of the impeachment hearings, "the new york times" reports giuliani is in hungary and ukraine shooting a television project.

>> in a two-part exclusive rudy giuliani debunks the impeachment hoax. >> reporter: one america news, a conservative tv outlet confirming to abc news giuliani is in europe right now taping part three of their special. the documentary an attempt to undercut the impeachment hearings featuring former ukrainian prosecutors, some who have been accused of corruption and have promoted misleading or baseless claims about joe biden and his son hunter. all of it part of giuliani's yearlong crusade focused on ukraine which critics have slammed as political dirty work for the president, as well as feeding conspiracy theories. giuliani says he's helping root out corruption in ukraine. >> that's why i started it and the president of the united states, i can tell you this, is asking for this. >> reporter: but democrats and even some members of the trump administration say the real goal for giuliani and president trump was a quid pro quo with ukraine,

key military aid if ukraine announced corruption inve president trump's political rival joe biden. now, we did ask giuliani about his trip overseas. all he would tell us is, quote, i'm just doing my job as a defense lawyer while also slamming the democrats leading the impeachment proceedings. >> okay, tom, thanks very much. we also have news this morning from the pentagon now considering sending more american troops to the middle east to deal with the growing threat from iran and our foreign correspondent james longman is in london with the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. donald trump said he wants u.s. troops out of the middle east but a u.s. official has confirmed that thousands more u.s. servicemen and women could be heading to the region to counter the ongoing threat from iran. a troop buildup started back in may. 14,000 have been sent since then but the u.s. footprint could soon expand significantly with more ships and military hardware being moved into place for the long-term. iran's role in the ongoing war

in yemen and attacks against saudi oil facilities have raised concerns about its increasingly aggressive posture. u.s. sanctions on iranian oil experts are causing significant unrest in the country meaning u.s. officials may also want to protect american interests from any retaliation. these are difficult choices especially with the election coming and no decisions have yet been made but the realities in the region may leave the administration with no choice, michael. >> thank you, james. and now to the dangerous storms hitting the west coast. snow and heavy rain causing chaos on the roads and take a look at this tractor trailer that's dangling off a los angeles overpass, and now there's a new storm that is moving in. rob is tracking the very latest. good morning, rob. >> hey, good morning, michael. it doesn't make much in southern california for the roads to get slick. an inch of rain in los angeles, about half of that came in just 15 minutes so a slow go and mentioned that tractor trailer around the 710 overpass in east l.a. this is just south of san jose, parts of the 101 shut down. three inches of rainfall anywhere from anaheim down to san diego yesterday.

we'll get a bit of a break but here comes the next storm, this one really intensified yesterday and grew too so it will affect seattle all the way down to san diego but the core will come in tomorrow night into saturday morning across redding, san francisco, get some heavy rain and we could see some damaging wind with this. snow levels will be on the lower side, we could see 1 to 3 feet and this will go coast to coast in the new york area by this time next week and will be powerful too. robin? >> thanks for the heads up there, rob. now to france where massive strikes across the country are underway. trains and schools are shut down, flights canceled. many take to the streets to bring over planned changes to the retirement plan. maggie rulli has more from paris. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning. this is where that latest wave of protests are kicking off. a strike shutting down the trains here overnight. now they're threatening to paralyze the entire country because like you just said, robin, it's more than a transit

strike. the unions are out in full force and nearly every single union from transit workers and rail workers to opera singers are out protesting. at the heart of their fight it's all about pension reform. france has one of the most generous retirement plans in the workers able to retire as young as age 52 but the government is facing a growing debt, and they say they want to overhaul the pension plan, but for the protesters here, they say what they hear is that they have to work more to get paid less, and that millions could lose their benefits. they say they are going to fiercely fight for what they see are their rights which has left police worried today. there's thousands out here on the streets. they're worried some of these protests could turn violent and urging tourists to stay away from attractions like the eiffel tower and hotels having cancellations as well and they will protest indefinitely so who knows what this could mean for the global economy. michael? >> such unrest there. thanks to maggie. >> thank you, maggie.

and now to an emergency landing overnight. a kabc chopper hit midair by what's believed to be a drone leaving marks on the aircraft. will carr is in l.a. with the story. good morning, will. >> reporter: and, michael, that collision was strong enough to punch a hole in the tail of the helicopter. with more drones flying this is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. overnight, a frightening encounter in the air after this kabc news chopper was believed to be hit by a drone leading the pilot to make a precautionary landing? >> we felt it. we heard it. we all looked at each other, didn't really know what it was. >> reporter: this pilot was flying over downtown los angeles at 100 miles per hour when suddenly they heard a loud bang on the chopper's tail. >> we just assumed it was a bird, because that happens every once in a while. when we got on the ground, though, it was a different story. >> reporter: the tail tattered covered in deep scrapes, dents and a small hole. >> it was a scary couple of minutes and we were all looking at each other, you know, looking

for a spot to land and we eventually put it down on the ground and fortunately everybody is okay. >> reporter: cristi and his chopper reaching elevation of 1,100 feet when they were hit, but drones are normally prohibited from flying above 400 feet, as well as prohibited from flying before sunrise and after sunset. the faa now investigating after this surprise encounter with a drone operating in prohibited airspace. this is such a big problem, it's also impacting wildfire helicopters. you know the helicopters that sweep in and make the drops trying to save people's lives and their properties. in recent years they've had to ground several of those helicopters because of drones flying in the area. guys. >> scary situation. >> it really is. >> glad everybody is okay. thank you, will. and also this morning, a close call here on the ground. take a look at this, and thankfully everyone is okay after a driver experienced a medical episode behind the wheel.

that missing mom mystery. her estranged husband back on the stand, and sending a surprising message to his missing wife outside the courtroom. whit johnson is here with good morning, whit. >> reporter: the heated exchanges in the courtroom taking place more than six months after jennifer dulos disappeared. this time, fotis dulos on the stand in a civil battle over millions of dollars. his mother-in-law's attorney accusing him of not being truthful in previous testimony. fotis dulos, the estranged husband of missing connecticut mom jennifer dulos, making this stunning statement outside a connecticut courtroom. >> i wish jennifer and her family a happy holidays and i just pray that they give my kids my love and my best wishes. >> reporter: jennifer hasn't been seen since may. police calli her the victim of a violent assault. her blood found in her home and multiple locations. fotis taking the stand wednesd getting a grilling from his mother-in-law's attorney, jennifer's mother is suing for $2.5 million. money she calls a loan, but he claims was a gift.

evidence tampering and hindering prosecution. both have pleaded not guilty. >> wow, okay, thank you wit. we have a new development in the trayvon martin case. george zimmerman, the man found not guilty of murder is now suing martin's family and others for $100 million. steve osunsami has the story, good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. we should underline that this lawsuit makes wild claims that prosecutors say shouldn't even be taken seriously, but nonetheless, george zimmerman is taking this case to court. he's suing for $100 million. george zimmerman who was acquitted in 2013 of the murder of trayvon martin is suing the teen's parents, their attorney, state police and former state prosecutors. in a lawsuit filed in florida, he's making the unsubstantiated claim that this young woman was a fake witness coached into her testimony by prosecutors and the victim's family. on the witness stand, she testified that she was on the phone with the unarmed black

teenager as zimmerman was shooting him to death, but the suit accuses her of somehow standing in for her half-sister who didn't want to testify in the case and says that prosecutors and police were all in on it. >> he said, why are you following me for? and i heard him -- a hard breath man say what are you doing around here. >> reporter: the lawyer filing the suit has a long history of pushing conspiracy theories and suing black lawmakers. critics call him pathologically a petition to support president obama and his legal tactics have gotten sanctions and bans from some courtrooms. this lawsuit is coming at the same time zimmerman is featured in and is promoting a new movie. the film makes the same accusations. trayvon martin's family says they feel victimized yet again. calling this another failed attempt to defend the indefensible and they accuse zimmerman of trying to make a buck. zimmerman's lawyer is being

called out this morning for publicly sharing the contact information of former witnesses and former prosecutors, including one who's now a circuit court judge in the same documents, zimmerman's contact information is redacted, guys. >> okay, thank you very much. steve. >> unbelievable. unbelievable. >> don't know what to say. we're going to turn now to that backlash over that peloton ad. in news this morning the company's stock is plummeting after critics called the commercial sexist. will reeve is here with the story. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it's very internet 2019. a company does a thing, some people get outraged, others make jokes on social media that go viral. the company makes some kind of statement round and round we go. the difference here is that peloton's bottom line took a major hit but the company is defending its creation. >> okay, are you ready? >> yes. >> now. >> a peloton? >> reporter: it's the commercial that's launched a thousand memes.

>> excited. let's do this. >> reporter: titled the gift that gives back. this 30-second peloton ad drawing ire for what some claim is its sexiest message of a husband giving his wife an exercise bike for christmas. keeping a yearlong fitness diary of her rides, tentative at first. >> five days in a row. are you surprised? i am. 6:00 a.m., yay. >> reporter: but a year later. >> a year ago i didn't realize how much this would change me. >> reporter: critics reacted swiftly on social media with comments like, nothing says maybe you should try to lose a few towns like gifting your already rail thin life partner a peloton. and that face you make when you have to videotape yourself exercising to prove to your husband that you're making every effort to look thin for him. the ad also igniting a wave of parodies. >> my husband got me a peloton for christmas. nothing weird about that. thank you. you get me. >> five days in a row. are you surprised? i am. >> reporter: critics decrying it

as sexist and dystopian saying the woman in the commercial is being put under pressure to stay thin. the company's stock appearing to take a hit as well. on tuesday, dropping 9%. shedding nearly $942 million of market value in a single day. >> one bad ad can hurt a company drastically. this is an era where consumers are much more polarized and much more prone to complain vocally on social media. the advertiser no longer always control its message. >> reporter: it's not the first time an ad has ignited a rage online. in 2017, pepsi pulled this commercial starring model kendall jenner after it was criticized for being tone deaf. jenner appearing to bring an end to a political protest by sharing a pepsi with a police officer. and this 2017 dove body wash ad decried as racially insensitive after it appeared to show a black woman removing her t-shirt to reveal a white woman. the company later apologized. this morning, peloton is standing by their ad.

in a statement to abc news saying, quote, our holiday spot was created to celebrate that fitness and wellness journey. while we're disappointed in how some have misinterpreted the commercial we are encouraged by and grateful for the outpouring of support we've received from those who understand what we were trying to communicate. >> a year ago i didn't realize how much this would change me. ♪ high above me >> thank you. >> reporter: this is not entirely new territory for peloton either. numerous social media accounts are dedicated to poking fun at the extravagant unrelatable home setups that peloton users have in their commercials and as for the stock price experts say that dips like this happen in situations like this but it's temporary and not a trend. >> all right. >> i have to say i've seen the commercial several times. it's what some people are seeing i'm not quite seeing it the same way but that's what happens. that's what happens. >> different eyes. >>re experiences. >> that's right.

because he wanted to because it was affecting his family. >> all right, paula, thank you. to that health alert about the potential dangers of vaping. a new study shows that e-cigarette users are twice as likely to face depression and dr. ashton is going to explain this to us. >> a brand-new study that looks over 800,000 people over a one-year period and asked them questions about their e-cig use, combustible cigarette use, whether they smoke at all or vape anything, and whether anyone has told them they suffer from depression or whether they're having symptoms of depression and take a look at the results. it was pretty significant. they found that anyone using e-cigs faced a two times twice the risk for clinical depression when you compare it to nonusers and additionally that risk went up with the frequency of e-cig use versus someone that does not use them. what i think is interesting about this, this is the first time we're hearing about nonphysical associated effects of vaping. >> why do you think all this? >> they don't know. we have to underscore this was based on association, not cause

and effect. that's important, but it's an observation but there is some theory that comes out of the data and research that has been done with combustible cigarettes that nicotine in combustible cigarettes and there is variable amount, sometimes high amounts in e-cigs can interfere or disrupt dopamine production. that is a very important brain chemical that then can affect how we deal with stress as a buffer, so on and so forth, but deprsion arelikely to vape or vice versa wame first, the chicken or the eg thm vaping. not just about half of team who suffer from depression don't seek treatment and it can range a whole bunch of signs and symptoms including sadness, hopelessness, tearfulness, changes in sleep meaning more or less, a loss of interest in things that were once pleasurable to you and then physical signs and symptoms, aches, pains, headaches, g.i. issues. think outside the box here and seek treatment. you can get help for depression.

it is thankful thursday, and this morning, we are so thankful for this young man right here. he is tyler stallings, an 8-year-old who has made it his mission to give back to as many veterans as he can. we'll talk to little tyler. did you see his cape? he is ready to go. he is ready. we'll talk to tyler. he's focused right now. but we'll share his story then we'll talk with tyler and his mom. >> i'm getting socks for the veterans. no one wants wet, cold feet. >> reporter: 'tis the season for giving but for 8-year-old tyler stallings his mission to give back to homeless veterans never stops. >> i want you to remember the veterans every day. >> it all began when i showed him a video when he was 4 years old on youtube. it was about veterans, and some of the other videos that followed weren't so happy about homeless veterans. immediately his response was that it wasn't right. he had to do something to help. >> these are my veteran project bags.

meal. it's all about bacon. i am with carla hall. robin is with michael chernow and rob is with stephen hopcraft. tell me what to do. >> we're doing a blt dip and you'll make my glaze that's black pepper, cayenne, yellow mustard for tang into maple syrup and then you're going to mix that up. we par cook the bacon at 400 degrees. here's some right here. you brush that on, and you go back into the oven we have that on a rack, so it gets nice and crispy. we're going to cook -- this is delicious. go ahead and have that snack if you want and then we take some lettuce, a grape tomato, some bacon and we'll spread this like this. love the oohs and then -- >> a little kick. >> a little kick, that cayenne. so in here i have sour cream,
