against her. >> this is a picture 63-year-old brian martin sent us from his hospital room today to let customers and friends know he's on the mend. but this is how he looked yesterday after paramedics pulled him out of the shattered glass of a neighboring store, flung there after being hit by a car allegedly driven by a woman whose son just had a haircut. martin says she came back and showed him a scratch on her son's neck and began cursing. martin says he apologized but her son had been squirming in the chair. he talked with us by phone in his hospital bed. >> she goes outside and starts kicking my door. >> she watched them climb into her car. >> she's flipping me off screaming f you and she put that thing in drive and floored it.

it's unclear if the robbers took anything. police say they carjacked a understand truck along with the driver and led officers on a chase. police have not identified who was shot yet, but they did confirm no law enforcement officers are among the dead. navarro firefighters are looking into the cause of a house fire that killed an e elderly woman last night. firefighters had trouble just getting into the home. >> reporter: a woman in her 80s was inside this home as it burned last night. a passer by called 911 at 10:30. firefighters say she lived alone. neighbors on cherry street watched helplessly as freight ores struggled to get inside. >> they couldn't get inside the house because there was too much debris inside the house catching fire. >> reporter: firefighters say there was so much smoke they couldn't see much. then they had to face mounds of stuff in what appears to be a

hoarder situation. >> the front door was blocked. our crews went in to make access to the front door and they were unable to get in because of the debris. >> when they reached the woman, they tried cpr, but they couldn't save her. >> really, really sorry that that happened. it's just heartbreaking. but i'm sorry that, you know, she was stuck in there. >> reporter: some neighbors we talk to say they never saw activity at the house and even wondered if anyone lived here. >> it was always dark. it was dark. never saw anybody go in and out. just about everybody you see somebody walking around, but i'm really that it happened. >> it's just sad, you know what i mean? i take care of my mother who's also around the same age as this woman, probably in better physical health. but you just never know when you have a family member that lives alone that is an older age. >> officials say the woman who died here was 84-year-old artis

wynn found out others are still concerned about its feasibility. >> at san jose city hall, mayor sam la caroe shared his vision for a customer takeover of >> we need to let go of the delusion that someone else is going to pay for the neglect of pg&e. >> pg&e filed for bankruptcy in january as it faced bowillions dollars of liability charges. a federal judge is expected to consider two competing reorganization plans, one put forth by shareholders and the other from bond holders. but the utilities commission has final say which is why liccardo has been pushing his proposal. while many agree pg&e's infrastructure needs to change, some aren't sure the mayor's plan is the best overall.

concord to livermore. we are seeing the clouds as well, very few people on the beach right now. storm arrives tomorrow afternoon/evening, wet windy saturday and lingering showers on sunday. the weekend is not a wash out. i'll show you in a moment. temperatures first thing in the morning, 40s, 50s, patchy fog but not as widespread as today. do expect the rain in the north bay. the wind's pretty much everywhere. numbers range from the 50s to the 60s. on storm impact scale it's a level two for tomorrow afternoon/evening going into saturday rain will be heavy at times. prepare for strong winds and even a chance of thunder. so, the hour by hour wind forecast, 10:00 a.m. tomorrow gets a little breezy. winds out of the south. watch what happens as we head into 3:00 p.m., winds really start to ramp up going into the nighttime hours, 44-miles-per-hour wind, half moon bay around 10:00 p.m. and those gusty winds will continue into saturday at least for the first part of the day.

the rain fall is -- actually the storm has slowed down. so, the rain fall doesn't get here immediately. a few light spotty showers not out of the question but the rest of you dry. 2:00 p.m. is when you start to see pockets of moderate rain moving into the north bay. evening commute is going to be dicey. 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. you're looking at the rain sliding south and east. saturday we have another batch of downpour. by 1:00 p.m. north bay slicing into san francisco, showers late saturday into evening and sunday morning. rain fall totals taking you through saturday night as of right now anywhere from a third of an inch in places like brentwood to almost 4 inches at cloverdale. everyone else will be in between that range. a look at the accuweather seven day forecast, level two for friday afternoon/evening going into saturday. both days slight chance of

you've got see this, not a movie stunt. this is a real-life frightening scene that happened on tuesday. this was in crystal river, florida, north of -- you see thatar just flying by there? that's a toyota camry and the driver says he got kind of dizzy while he was driving. he drove right off the highway, hi an embankment full speed, the car went flying 139 feet

into the air clearing a dozen vehicles in the car dealership. you see the landing. the driver received medical attention. somehow, some way, miraculously nobody on the ground was hurt. >> thank goodness. now to a different type of wild scene, this time in new york city. two women accused of shoplifting from barney's before brawling with employees. it happened in the middle of madison avenue. workers going after one of the women accused of stealing a $400 hat. they got into a fight. the women are accused of punching, biting, and scratching the employees. political fighting took a backseat for a while at the white house. the president and first lady lit the national christmas tree, a tradition dating back to 1923. the tree features more than 50,000 lights and 450 white stars. the event included a number of holiday tunes including performances by jesse james decker and the u.s. marine corps band.

meanwhile the capital christmas tree will be lit lit t 5:00 p.m. today. santa con returns to san francisco. people dressed in santa suits will take part in bar crawls. where santa goes, trouble sometimes follows. last year, two women were arrested for felony vandalism and battery after they were caught on video trashing a restaurant on polk street. organizers urge party goers to be respectful. one meeting spot is union square where people are asked to bring new unwrapped toys to donate to the fire department. a lot of people are on high alert. it's a neighborhood people thought was safe. growing concerns about violent crime all across the bay area. >> who's spying on

it looks like our producers say we do that have story. let's get back to it in progress. >> it makes me feel like a live in a sick horrifying place. >> reporter: ree sa has lived in san francisco for ten years and calls the neighborhood home, but what happened to her boyfriend last weekend has her on high alert. >> he was blindsided. he was assaulted. somebody must have punched him this side of his face because he had a huge swollen right side of his face and a huge gash on the left side of his head. >> reporter: the marina's bustling shopping and dining corridor have given the residents a sense of community until lately. just over a month ago, powell had that feeling of security taken away. >> i turned around and saw the gun and let go of my laptop and they ran off. >> powell's mom has lived in the marina for nearly 20 years and didn't think this kind of violent crime could happen in her neighborhood which is why she, her son, and risa are speaking out today.

>> this needs to change. >> reporter: i spoke to the pd who say they have plain closed officers along the streets. the most recent crime reports show crimes are down 5% year to date. >> residents say it's not enough. >> we should feel safe in the city. it felt safe for a very long time. it doesn't need to change now. >> we spend a lot of money to live here and who's taking care of us at the end of the day? >> reporter: back out here live now i pressed sfpd for answers. i said, hay are y hey are you g any more after these two incidents were brought to light? i did not get a response. i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. >> abc 7 news contributor and "san francisco chronicle" contributor joins us. talking about building a better bay area. this is complicated. the stats show that violent crime is down in san francisco but there still is this

uneasiness especially in certain areas where you've got -- >> there's an uneasiness all around the town and not just san francisco, in the bay area in the past year or so. it's grown uneasy all over the place. let me ask you, if you have friends or relatives coming to san francisco and they want to go to fisherman's wharf, what do you tell them? >> i tell them to be careful. i had friends who stayed fairly pry see union square hotel. homeless, needles on the sidewalks, they were freaked out. >> and the behavior. it's much more random. they say that the violent crime has decreased in san francisco but you have to understand that it was really, really high to begin with. now, there's been a couple of big incidents out there that captured the imagination and the public's attention.

one was chinatown where a couple of elderly people were walking in broad daylight, someone pulled up, jumped out, stole their watches, through them to the ground, and drove off in the car. it was a high profile case. along the embark dare row we had another young woman coming home at night, grabbed by this guy, taken out. he thought he was going to save the world from robots that were taking over and she was having to fight for what she thought was her life. again, a very high profile incident in two parts of town you wouldn't have thought it would happen before. it is spreading around. part of it is there seems to be more brazen incidences. but i have to wonder how much of it is also because it's being caught on video and we're seeing it and we're seeing on the internet and places like next door where your neighbors are informing you of crimes that are happening you wouldn't have known about before. >> look at the numbers on the screen. i know this isn't a scientific poll. but we're talking about close to 83% of the people saying they're

either concerned or they go out less. so, b.a.r.t. is a perfect example. i mentioned this before on the air. my youngest daughter just has flat out said i am not taking b.a.r.t. anymore because of some high profile cases. and again, as you point out, we see it on the video. >> right. and it's reinforced. but also on b.a.r.t., the facts are the facts. the alameda county report this year that violent crime has almost doubled on b.a.r.t. in the past five years because more and more people are getting on it. some of it is fare evasion. it used to be you couldn't get on the b.a.r.t. and people were expected to act a certain way. that's not necessarily the case right now. we're seeing it in public institutions and neighborhoods around. the question is what do you do about it? that's the big question. one of the things is police say you can't arrest your way out of crime. there's got to go to the root causes. that's one thing. we've got to see them come up with the alternative of what

it's going to be as a solution. what they're trying is more cops. they're trying to put more cops on the street, more on the b.a.r.t. trains and the platforms. the feeling being at least you'll feel safer if you see the police there. so, it's building a better bay area. you're going have to rebuild confidence in some of these neighborhoods and cities and systems like b.a.r.t. >> it's easier said than done, but a greater police presence would certainly help. >> it has to be sustained. it can't just be after the fact. it's got to be sustained because do you know something? crime statistics have a whole new meaning when you become one of them. >> no question. let's leave it there. thank you. great conversation. now back to our question. how does crime affect your day to day life? you can take a look at the voting so far. 17% say no impact. 58%, i'm extra cautious. 25% saying they go out less. we still want to know what you think. so, we're going to keep the voting open through the 6:00 hour. the search for a few good

a chicago artist who's anything but ordinary. >> pete gain refurbishing and paints vintage refrigerators. >> customers have paid anywhere from 500 to $5,000 for a custom fridge. ♪ >> usually guys have a good idea of what they want their car to look like. they don't know about the refrigerator i'm going to sell them. what we do here at candy van is paint a lot of vintage refrigerators, turn into custom refrigerators. there's a lot of things that are similar on the vintage refrigerators to a vintage car with the sleek lines or curves or specialty chrome handles. i'll never make two refrigerators look the same. candy van is a custom culture painting fabrication shop.

the term custom culture is a firm of art based around automotive paint and design. we put automotive paint on nearly anything. anything that doesn't move i'll paint. we live in chicago to we focus on the vintage refrigerators. there's old bungalows everywhere. everybody had a second refrigerator that got put in the basement. a lot of times people buy a house and acquire the old refrigerator in the basement. so i'll buy it. first we find out if they're in working condition. if not, we can rebuild the refrigeration part that's metal. we tear it down, send out the parts that need to be chrome to chrome. we send the parts that need to get powder coated to powder coat. then we start rebuilding it, new seals, new electrical, new shelves, whatever it needs to get better than it was before. sometimes people have an idea of

what they want their fridge to look like, but i'll never make two refrigerators look the same. most of the time they'll trust me with their design. the money, it's endless. anywhere from $500 tlar to $5,000. it depends how much you want to customize it for. i did one once and put it on ebay and ended up trading a 61 lincoln continental for it. i would say to date that's the most somebody's paid. this is the candy van shop fridge and a lot of people might say that this is extremely excessive with everything that's going on. you have air brush roses, pinstriping, probably eight different layers of paint in here with light up emblem. it says built in chicago because it's very important to me. i live and work in chicago. and it keeps my beer cold. it's like my gucci logo going on in there, you know? i really enjoy working on the
