♪ all my sisters with me ♪ we are family good morning, america. if that doesn't make you smile on this friday morning, nothing will. what a sweet adoption story. 5-year-old michael took his whole class to the ceremony. >> wanted them to be there to share with his forever family. >> he's still smiling this morning as well. >> i'm sure he is. >> that good news is coming up but we begin with breaking news, a gunman opened fire at a naval base in pensacola, florida, injuring multiple people. the gunman has been taken down and poish thomas has thelatest. >> reporter: it's happened again, another active shooter, this time in pensacola, florida. authorities tell us they have shot an armed suspect who has been killed. sadly, we can confirm there are at least two people dead. we're also learning that at least nine other people were transported to local hospitals. no word yet on their conditions. there's a massive police

presence at the base. the fbi and atf among law enforcement agencies responding. the incident began roughly around 8:00 a.m. the base immediately put on lockdown. this is a second active shooter scenario playing out in less than two days. on wednesday, an armed suspect fatally shot two people at a base at pearl harbor in hawaii before killing himself. george, we're now in the midst of a new phenomenon, increasing incidents where armed suspects are showing up in public places trying to kill as many people as possible. schools, theaters, shopping centers, houses of worship, increasingly no place safe. just this year alone we've had active shooter scenarios playing out at a virginia beach government center, a walmart in texas, a dayton nightclub. law enforcement officials deeply concerned and in pensacola there's still an active shooter situation unfolding. they're checking the base for other victims and to make sure there are no other suspects. a press conference is scheduled for 10:30 eastern, george. >> thank you, pierre. we'll track this story all morning long. robin.

>> victor oquendo is on the scene with the very latest. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the fbi has taken over. investigators working through the night. you can see the ups truck riddled with bullets right there across the street. there are edence markers everywhere. the end of this chase absolutely terrifying with innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. at least four people are dead this morning after a dramatic high-speed chase involving a stolen ups truck and it ending in a hail of gunfire at this intersection. a bystander capturing this dramatic moment as dozens of officers swarmed. many people just idling in their cars as police from at least four different agencies fire round after round into the ups truck. the incident leaving four dead including the two gunmen, the ups driver who was being held hostage and the driver of a car trapped in the fire zone. the buzz saw of gunfire ripping in all directions. listen to this video captured by two witnesses trapped in the

[ screams ] as bullets whipped past them, one even hitting their car despite being dozens of yards away and in the opposite direction of the suspects. the level of force raising questions this morning about why so many rounds were fired in an intersection so crowded with innocent bystanders. >> the people give up and are held accountable for their crimes, then we wouldn't these many people in danger. >> reporter: the more than 20-mile long trail of violence beginning shortly after 4:00 p.m. at this jewelry store in coral gables where they exchanged gunfire with the store's owner, injuring one inside. a silent alarm activated. the suspects fleeing carjacking this delivery truck and taking the driver with them. >> the suspects did fire on law enforcement. >> reporter: a high speed chase through two south florida counties ensued, and it ended after the truck was trapped in traffic. officers making their move bringing this ordeal to its grim end.

a lot of questions for law enforcement this morning. we're still waiting to learn more about the victims. in a statement ups offered their condolences and called it a senseless act of violence. george. >> boy, it sure was. we go to washington now and the impeachment showdown. the house now on track for a vote to impeach president trump by christmas after that dramatic announcement from speaker nancy pelosi ordering her deputies to draft articles of impeachment. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. this was something that speaker pelosi hoped to avoid but she says the facts are clear, the president abused his office for his own political gain and that he's left them no choice but to impeach. overnight, speaker pelosi making it clear democrats are moving full steam ahead to impeach the president. >> the president's actions made it necessary. you cannot violate the constitution in full view. the facts are clear. >> reporter: democrats could charge trump with abuse of

office, bribery and obstruction and they're debating whether to include obstruction of the mueller probe too. but pelosi is keeping her cards close. >> we're operating collectively. it's not going to be somebody puts something on the table. we have our own, shall we say, communication with each other. >> reporter: articles of impeachment could be introduced next week setting up a likely house vote on impeachment before christmas. at the white house our cecilia vega pressed the president. >> are you worried, sir, about the stain that impeachment might have on your legacy? >> no, not at all, no. it's a hoax. it's a hoax. it's a big, fat hoax. >> reporter: republicans have insisted democrats want to impeach the president because they simply don't like him. >> they've always wanted to impeach the president. >> reporter: the speaker was asked thursday if this is personal, and she fired back. >> do you hate the president, madam speaker? because representative --

round of hearings in the judiciary committee. that could complicate the schedule. >> reporter: absolutely. the white house has until 5:00 to say whether or not they're going to participate and the president has been railing against this process saying it's completely unfair but declined so far to send anyone to represent him in these judiciary committee hearings. the president, it seems, is already looking ahead to a trial in the republican-controlled senate, tweeting if you are going to impeach me, do it now and fast so we can have a fair trial in the senate. >> mary, thanks very much. michael. now to the race for the white house and the confrontation on the campaign trail making headlines between former vice president joe biden and a voter at a town hall. whit johnson has more in manchester, new hampshire. good morning to you, whit. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. biden insists he did not lose his temper in the confrontation but that town hall voter clearly touched a nerve attacking him about his age, his son hunter.

president trump's campaign quick to attack. joe biden goes berserk. biden downplaying it. >> you're losing your temper, aren't you -- >> i didn't lose my temper. >> reporter: now, there's been mixed reaction to that heated exchange. some say that he did display toughness and vigor with that answer but needs to have an effective response to a question that will no doubt come up again and again. by the way, that farmer says that he would still vote for biden over trump if he is the nominee. robin. >> okay, whit, thank you. now to a new report released by uber revealing more than 3,000 reports of sexual assault last year and gio benitez has details on what uber is planning to do next. good morning, gio. >> reporter: robin, good morning. uber is calling it a first of its kind report but for years uber and other ride-sharing apps have been harshly criticized with allegations that they've not done enough to protect passengers and drivers. uber is one of the most popular ride-sharing apps in the world but this morning the company opening up about sexual

misconduct in its new safety study revealing more than 3,000 reported sexual assaults across the company's 1.3 billion rides last year. uber pointing out drivers and riders were both attacked and that some assaults occurred between riders. the report part of the company's effort to be more transparent after years of criticism over its safety record. in a statement uber's ceo said some people will appreciate how much we've done on safety. others will say, we have more work to do. they will all be right. just last month in connecticut a woman sued uber claiming she was sexually assaulted by her driver. >> i was in the backseat and i woke up and he was in the backseat. >> reporter: in 2017 we spoke to two florida women who filed the proposed class action lawsuit against uber claiming they were sexually assaulted by uber drivers. both asked us to distort their voices and obscure their faces. >> my life is a mess. i can't concentrate. i get anxiety. >> reporter: authorities say in

new york city 32-year-old sean williams invited a teenage passenger into his uber to go drinking with him and drive to his home where prosecutors claim he planned to sexually assault her. and uber says it has tripled the size of its safety team over the past two years and has already banned more than 40,000 drivers. uber says they're going to share that data with other company, they say, to make sure those other apps also ban those drivers. george. >> that is a good idea. thanks very much. the latest now on that deadly crash of a national guard black hawk helicopter in minnesota killing all three people on board. an investigation is now under way and alex perez has the details. >> reporter: it's a catastrophic crash. there's dark marks all along in the tree line. three national guardsmen dead after their helicopter plummeted from the sky shortly after taking off from a minnesota military base. the aircraft left the st. cloud airport for a maintenance test flight. the tower receiving a troubling

call nine minutes after takeoff going down just 16 miles southwest of st. cloud. >> there is a helicopter calling mayday. they don't know where it's at. >> reporter: the uh-60 black hawk losing communication at 2:05 p.m. officials making the grim discovery just hours later. >> can we get some other vehicles out here in case we have to go out into the wilderness. >> any snowmobiles that maybe we should get going in that direction? >> reporter: authorities are still uncertain of the cause of the crash and an investigation is now under way. >> we offer our deepest sympathies to the families of these warriors. they paid the ultimate price in service to minnesota and the united states of america. >> reporter: and investigators here are still working to pinpoint what exactly may have gone wrong. authorities are expected to be on the scene for the next few days. michael? now to that wicked weather that's hitting the west coast. a new storm is moving in with more snow, heavy rain and fears of mudslides.

rob is tracking the threat for us this morning. good morning, rob. good morning, michael. this is a large, mature cyclone, about 700 miles off the coast of california. you can see the giant pin wheel action that's going to continue to spin more in the way of moisture. this is going to affect the entire coastline from seattle all the way down to san diego. the heaviest rains will get into san francisco around the rush hour tonight and increase as we go through the morning hours and into tomorrow night with heavy snows in the mountains. we'll see 40 mile per hour winds as well. wind advisories are posted for much of california. let's zoom in. frazier park north of l.a. is where the advisories start and go all the way into the valley, into san jose, winds gusting 40, 50 miles per hour through san francisco bay and a flood watch north of the bay area. look at the huge amount of winter storm warnings and this is going to affect i-80. donner pass is where the snow is going to pile you been two, three, maybe four feet. you're going to need chains, snow tires or four wheat dri-wh.

by monday morning it's in the central plains, chicago, to detroit, louisville, atlanta, new york, these airports are going to be affected by the storm in the way of heavy rain and snow. minneapolis too, green bay, so back through atahoe city, the north dakota, minneapolis could see six inches of snow and stretching into the upper great lakes and this will allow the really cool air to come down. look at these numbers come wednesday morning. it will feel like nearly 40 below zero in minneapolis, minus 2 in des moines, minus 12 in chicago and this is all heading east so winter certainly is coming. this is the coldest air of the season. michael. >> all right, rob, where is it warm? >> we want thro be there. >> i want to be there. look at this credible video showing a coast guard rescue. a florida crew was out for night patrol when they received a call that a dog was swimming off the coast of ft. myers beach. thankfully they found the pup, safely pulled it aboard. as the hero scooped the dog out of the water, he says you're the best person i've ever rescued.

just horrible. i mean, we've been together 37 years and it's not the same. it's -- we are a team. we're together. it just felt weird with him not being here on the set. >> announcer: pat sajak and vanna white. >> reporter: in her 37 years of revealing letters on "wheel of fortune", vanna white never worked a day without her longtime friend and host pat sajak. not until last month when he underwent emergency surgery for a blocked intestine just hours before a scheduled "wheel of fortune" taping. >> it was terrible. you think the worst. because you never know when you're going in for surgery, you never know what's going to happen. no, i was scared to death. >> how much information did you have initially about why he was going into surgery? >> it happened like that. i mean, he didn't even know. he was -- he was on a walk the morning of and just all of a sudden started feeling stomach

cramps i guess, and i think two hours later he was having surgery. >> do you remember him saying something to you, whether on the phone or text or however that you knew he was fine? >> when he his wife said he's making jokes, i knew he was feeling better. that was the absolute key. >> reporter: right after getting the disturbing news about sajak's health, white recalls what her producer said next. >> how do you feel about hosting the show? it's like, what? no. you're kidding, right? he goes, no, i'm serious. and my first thought was there's no way. i don't pay attention to pat. you know. >> 37 years clearly you have. >> you would think so but you know, i'm busy with my letters and puzzleboard. i mean, i hear him but i don't pay that much attention. don't tell anybody that. no, i was petrified. terrified. but i did it. >> announcer: here's our host, vanna white. >> reporter: next week fans will

see a first. vanna white hosting "wheel of fortune." she stepped in for three weeks of shows while sajak was recovering from surgery. >> hello, hello and welcome to "wheel." >> reporter: "gma" getting an exclusive sneak peek. >> i was so nervous. i'm shaking now because i remember the feeling of how am i going to do this? >> reporter: she's never handled hosting duties before. though the two switched places for one segment in 1996 when sajak had laryngitis and lost his voice at the end of a show. >> very nice, pat. that was just the bonus round. so i wasn't even at his position. yes, i was standing in the bonus round and turned the letters. he didn't have the red dress on, though. all i had to do is say, we'll give you r, s, t, l and e. you pick three more. that was pretty easy. >> reporter: but being the full-time host presents a different kind of challenge. >> i have to be aware of everything that's going on.

for our viewers in the west. a gunman opened fire at a naval base in pensacola florida injuring multiple people. the gunman has been taken down. pierre thomas has the latest. >> reporter: authorities tell us they have shot and killed an arm suspect at that florida base. sadly, there are at least two victims dead. at least nine people were transported to local hospitals. no word yet on their conditions. there's a massive police presence at the base. the fbi and atf among law enforcement agencies responding. the incident began roughly around 8:00 a.m. the base immediately put on lockdown. >> there's no longer an active shooter situation. we have several deceased and several wounded. my heart goes out to the families of the deceased and the wounded. they're part of the navy family. they're part of us, and our heart goes out to those of you who may be affected by this tragedy. >> reporter: this is the second active shooter scenario playing out in less than two days on a military installation.

i have two of them, i'm really in trouble. our whole lives in here but a new study shows cell phones post danger as smartphones have become ubiquitous to related injuries. we've all seen the videos. people texting and walking, falling into fountains, off curbs and into traffic. causing bumps, bruises, broken legs and sometimes worse. a new study from rutgers medical school says these kinds of distraction injuries are on the rise. injuries related to texting and driving and texting and walking have increased dramatically since 2007 and doctors are seeing more and more of these injuries in emergency rooms. it's a unique problem for the 21st century. in the past two decades cell phone related head and neck injuries accounted for 76,000 emergency room visits. >> it shows more people are suffering injuries related to head and neck as cell phone use as increased so 96% of the population owns a cell phone and so what i'm seeing in the emergency department are people

presenting with lacerations to their head or some sort of bruise, an abrasion or contusion. >> reporter: texting drivers are also at risk and represent a high number of er visits. one study found states with bans on texting while driving have fewer er visits after car crashes. >> having that law in place is key. that will send a message, a very strong message to individuals who are using their cell phones while driving. >> reporter: to prevent injuries some cities are considering fining pedestrians for walking and texting. you can get yourself an $85 ticket while texting and walking in ft. lee, new jersey, while pedestrians crossing the street and texting in honolulu can be out as much as $99 for multiple offenses. for reference, the iphone debuted in 2007. that year the study says there were 2,709 injuries. in 2016 there were 9,431. >> shot right up. >> huge increase. will, thanks very much. let's go to robin. time now for a "gma" exclusive.
