here's abc 7 news meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. he scale anlookg at srs moving acro closer towards north beach, i-80 through berkeley, wet streets. over into walnut creek, danville 680, the showers extend out eastward and further to the south over in the hills, at hayward a few areas of rain and then a little bit heavier south of woodside in the santa cruz mountains. still quite a bit of activity across the state winding down throughout the day today. it is 53 in vallejo, 56 oakland, cooler than yesterday the strong south winds, starting out slightly cooler with a little bit of fog in hayward and napa. three mile visibility. scattered showers this morning and looking at a quieter afternoon. we'll talk about the week ahead in a few minutes.

>> thank you. water really was everywhere. this is the van ness muni metro station where rain water cascading down an escalator. rain service was shut down from vanness to the west portal station to deal with this. reporter luz pena has more on how neighbors are now dealing with the aftermath. >> reporter: to put it simply rain fell and there was nowhere for it to go causing major flooding across the city. example number one market street. getting off i-80 another flood. this one blocking traffic, stopping cars on the freeway. >> someone had vaguely mentioned in passing this neighborhood gets flooded, but we didn't know it was going to be this bad. >> reporter: it was worse than what they anticipated, 15th avenue in san francisco's west portal neighborhood flooded, affected at least 12 homes reaching at least six inches high. >> by the time residents realized how high the water was getting it was too late to react. not even sandbags were going to

protect you guys from this water. >> no. i mean n w fast it came and the city is great about dropping off, you know, pallets to us quicklyor us. >> reporter: across the street this family. they had balloons and tables set up. cleaning was not in their plans. this was their son's second birthday. instead they're faced with this. >> with the furniture i see so much of this is wet. >> it's gone. it's destroyed. yeah. we have to replace everything. luckily our bed didn't get wet. >> reporter: the silver lining we saw all across this neighborhood where shovels were found in every corner, neighbors helping with their bare hands trying to get their street back to normal and in the philmore, others trying to save their city. >> so nice of you. >> reporter: in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. during ourlustyeath and

landed on two people in san francisco. they were walking along the sidewalk when the tree fell. this happened at locus and clay street and for a time the fire department urged people to avoid the area. you can see the soil around the root of this tree, if you can see if the pictures it's saturated. both people hit by the train said they were in pain and taken to the hospital. at least one parked car was damaged. the rain caused several problems as well in the east bay. especially on the hills and freeways. reporter anner has san has more where there were two highway crashes. >> reporter: this dash cam video shows westbound 24 before the cald tunnel. possiblyue to the wet roads. causing a backup on to ori ori city streets. >> took me about 20 minutes because everything was backed up.

>> reporter: pass the tunnel into oakland the rain met with heavy winds in the oakland hills. >> i was home and my -- two of my kids and we heard one of the loudest noises i've ever heard. >> reporter: the noise several massive pine trees crashing through her roof. no one was hurt and the main residence wasn't hit, but along with figuring out repairs they're trying to prevent more damage. >> there is one wall standing and leaning heavily and we are on slope so we'll want to make sure that doesn't slide down the hill and affect someone down below us. >> reporter: the north bay wasn't spared from the afternoon downpour either. gushing water and downed trees kept fire crews busy all afternoon. >> it's been cold all day and it started pouring this afternoon, like pouring. i haven't seen in a while. >> reporter: we're not out of the clear yet and expect morgue rain today. anner hassan, abc 7 news. it seems like the snow has

planning on taking bart at any point expect more delays in san francisco on t of the weekend service schedule. there will be trains running just on a single track between the embarcadero and 24th street mission stations. crews say they will be upgrading the electrical systems. delays are expected to be about 15 or 20 minutes. people living in oakland could be one step closer to having a role in planning the city's budget. the community democracy project plans to turn in a petition tomorrow for the people's budget amendment. it would allow those who live in oakland and undocumented residents over the age of 16 to vote on how its budget dollars are allocated. the group will gather at oakland city hall tomorrow afternoon to submit signatures. happening today, take a snow day in berkeley. it is the tenth annual snow day in the shattuck of berkeley. santa will drop snow from his sleigh. bring your boots and mittens to play, sip on apple cider and

snack on ginger snaps for free. nutcracker dancers and tap dancing christmas trees. the free events runs from 10:00 to 3:00 between vine and rose streets. some san francisco harley riders will drop off holiday toys to children and their families at zuckerberg general hospital. oh, yeah. it's what it looks like. the group will ride down to hand deliver the gifts for pediatric patients there. it's the 36th year of the annual toy run. dozens of harley riders take part every year. in the north bay, the holidays got a little brighter this evening or last night in na votto. people came together for the tree lighting. santa was there too with a jingle in his step. this has been a holiday tradition since 1928. i'm glad that went on rain or shine. for the events happening today how is it looking? >> looking much better. we havthshowalng about driving in this morning and looking at some fog out there as well.

welcome back. a live look from tgolden gate b. it is rainy. drive safe if you're heading out this morning. more from lisa in a minute on the forecast for the day. meantime a san francisco police officer is recovering in the hospital this morning along with a suspect after an officer-involved shooting in the mission district. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has more on what the department says is its first officer involved shooting this year. >> i heard like probably six to eight gunshots and then you heard somebody yelling. >> that's what i remember, it being really loud. >> reporter: neighbors heard gunfire around 8:30 saturday morning in the mission district. police say officers were responding to reports of a possible burglary in progress at a home at 23rd and kap streets when they say encountered the suspect. >> the suspect assaulted the officers an an officer-involved shooting ensued. >> this man witnessed the shooting. >> i saw a little scuffle

between two police officers and what appears to be an intoxicated person and right away they let off at least eight shots. >> reporter: police say the suspect was armed, but offered few details. >> the suspect assaulted the officers with a weapon. >> could you tell us what kind of a weapon? >> i'm unable to describe or explain the type of weapon. >> reporter: one officer was injured in the incident, now recovering at the hospital. police chief william scott was at the scene for the investigation that's now under way. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. we are learning more about the deadly crash on webb highway 24 yesterday on "abc 7 mornings." chp says a car went off the road between the saint stevens and ornds exit 3:00 a.m. early saturday and slammed into a tree. the road was wet at the time, but it's not clear what exactly caused the crash. chp is reminding people to be careful in the rain. >> be mindful of what you're doing. it's a greater impact, it takes

you much longer to come to a complete stop, make a choice what you're going to do in a scenario. you need some more space, slow down, and be really aware of what you're doing while you're driving. >> one passenger is from oakland and the other from hayward. the man behind the wheel has not been identified. two families are getting $7 million each after two teenagers were electrocuted in a canal this past april in dixon. remember this, the solano irrigation district issued an apology for what happened. the teens jumped into the water to try to rescue a dog. one of the mothers says the boys grabbed the metal railing of a walking bridge over the irritation canal and had no idea it was charged. it is still not clear how the bridge became energized. the lawsuit claimed electrical equipment was to the properly grounded. people braves the rain to get holiday shopping done face another obstacle in san francisco. yeah, check this out. a geyser flooded the sidewalk outside the westfield mall.

[ bleep ]. >> you watched that there. new video shows a delivery driver in wisconsin not thrilled about having to pick up a package. his meltdown was captured on the homeowner's ring doorbell camera. >> [ bleep ]. is the homeowner says she ordered a couch twice but both times fedex delivered it damaged. she was having the company send it back. it shows the driver trying to load the package, swearing the entire time. he got the package in and yelled one more thing at the house before driving off.

the homeowner just wants an apology. fedex says the behavior in this video is unacceptable and taking the appropriate steps to address this matter. all right. let's get another check of the weather now. we know we are tracking all that rain. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, liz. good morning to you. and we are looking at live doppler 7 right now. you can see the scattered showers all around the bay area. it's starting up in the north bay. looking at the rain towards the coast, sea ranch into the east bay. some pretty good showers here from emeryville on powell street through berkeley. as we head further to the south looking at a san leandro parkway alameda, 680 wet weather and finally to the south, along the peninsula, from half moon bay, highway 1 over into los altos. the higher hills, where the rain is going to last. could pick up an additional quarter to half inch in the

santa cruz mountains, the upper elevations and in the sierra nevada it is snow, temperatures in the 30s. heavy snow looking at that winter warning through noontime. an additional two to possibly six inches in the higher elevations with slick roadways and possible chain control. not a great time to go to the mountains but notice that we are looking at this entire portion of northern and central california impacted by this departing system. it is 56 in oakland, 55 in hayward, and this is a one on our storm impact scale. looking at some scattered showers mainly this morning. light winds, rainfall from a quarter of an inch to half inch, but most of you seeing much less than that. a live look outside, looking at the showers and cloudy throughout the afternoon, maybe a few peeks of sun, a random shower and perhaps a dry week ahead except for a system coming in on tuesday. so let's track the rest of the day for you. notice the few showers in the east bay. this is 6:00. and we'll see a few of them in

the north bay, but as we go through the morning hours, we will be trending drier. few peeks of sun, partly cloudy, here we are at 2:00, much the questioner quieter thsu setting and looking at some calmer conditions. rainfall amounts throughout the day today very light. notice the hills, the north bay, maybe a tenth of an inch and down, otherwise looking at a couple hundredths, visibility reduced with fog three to five miles out there, but the winds are light and looking at mainly cloudy conditions throughout the afternoon. upper 50s here for san francisco and oakland, for 60 in concord, most of the shower activity this morning so if you're staying in for a while, you'll be missing it pretty much yawl together. tonight looking at overnight lows 40s, 50 out there, oakland with dry conditions, starting the workweek out with clouds and fog tomorrow.

rain pouring down in san francisco and the entire bay area making for a big mess. this was the scene outside the sfpd park station in golden gate park. water pooled beneath the police cruisers yesterday and the fire department had to be called out to several areas to deal with flooding. and could we see any more for our sunday? well, that's the big question we're all asking. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> liz, good morning to you. it is a level one on our storm impact scale and scattered showers right now throughout the bay area. much less widespread than we had yesterday. as we go in closers to the east bay you can see that pretty good cell there north of piedmont and looking at the wet weather around berkeley. also to the south, around 580 and 880, san leandro into hayward a few showers along the

pen peninsula from 280 woodside. a few areas of light rain into morgan hill and the south bay looking at the scattered showers. we still have that winter storm warning through noon in the mountains. 2 to 6 inches of snow above 6500 feet. it's in the 50s this morning. we're behind the system and as wego through the morning hours a few light areas of rain and then looking at a lot of clouds throughout the day today. liz? >> lisa, thank you. developing news this morning in the deadly shooting that killed three people at a naval base in pensacola, florida. the victims 19-year-old airman mohammad haitham, 23-year-old ensign joshua watson of alabama. and not pictured 21-year-old airman apprentice, cameron walters from georgia. police shot and killed the gunman. reporter dave packer has this update. >> reporter: the community coming together saturday holding a vigil for the victims and families impacted by friday's deadly shooting. authorities say the alleged gunman opened fire in one of the

classroom buildings at naval air station pensacola. >> i have one navy officer shot appears multiple times. >> reporter: the shooter slowing down when one person barricaded a door allowing others to flee out the back of the building. four sheriff deputies located the attacker, chasing him while opening fire. the gunman firing back. two officers hit, one shot in the arm, the other in the knee, yet they continued to fire at the suspect eventually killing him. eight people injured, four killed, including the suspect, second ulene nant muhammad al sham raneny of the royal saudi air force. an only post that expressed hatred for america appears to be connected to him and don't believe he was connected to any terror organization and acted alone. the defense secretary says it's too early in the investigation to call this terrorism. >> i think we need to let the investigators the fbi do its work and tell us, get us the facts and we'll move from there. >> reporter: he was attending flight training with the u.s.

navy. the department of defense reports more foreign students from 153 countries are in the u.s. for military training. >> this has been done for many decades. we've been doing this with our foreign countries. i guess we're going to have to look into the procedure. >> reporter: the fbi releasing photos of the scene and thanking the service organization supporting the personnel involved in the investigation. dave packer, abc news, new york. largely came as a surprise when it happened an american graduate student heading home after being in prison in iran for three years. an exchange negotiated between the u.s. and iran thanks to the swiss embassy. abc's mona kosar has the details. >> reporter: after more than three years, xiyue wang is finally heading home. wang a princeton university graduate student was conducting research in iran when he was arrested in august of 2016 accused of being a spy. he was then sentenced to ten years in tehran's prison. the american scholar was released saturday as part of a prisoner exchange. the u.s. releasing masoud

reselling shoes as their profession. also happening today, you can check out the largest origami decorated tree in the world and it is right here in san francisco. the world tree of hope stands more than 23 feet tall and is decorated with more than 17,000 origami cranes. each is hand folded and inscribed with wishes for the future of the world. the tree symbolizes peace, love and humidityism and will be on display through january 11th. a ginger bread house is just a small part of one elaborate edible holiday display. more than 30 artists in poland created a gingerbread world that features a few hundred ginger bred people, 237 houses a church and castle surrounded by a gingerbread moat. it includes more than a ton of dough, 300 eggs and 26 gallons of honey. to top it off there's two chocolate trains that snake their way through town.
