as the system winds down we'll see temperatures in a narrow range today, upper 50s to near 60. partly cloudy skies tonight. and we're not going to be talking about a lot of rain in the next seven days. so we'll talk about rain totals next time we see you, liz. >> thanks, lisa. it was a much different story yesterday. water was everywhere. this is new video here showing 18th and castro yesterday afternoon. the street and sidewalk looked like a river, water flowing past packed cars there. this is a muni rail station with water cascading down the elevator. muni service was shut down for a while. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has more on how neighbors are dealing with the impact. >> reporter: there was major flooding across the city. example number one, market

street. getting off i-80, another flood. this one blocking traffic, stopping cars on the freeway. >> someone had vaguely mentioned in passing that this neighborhood gets flooded, but we didn't know it was going to be this bad. >> reporter: in a matter of minutes, 15th avenue in san francisco's west portal neighborhood flooded, affecting 12 homes. by the time residents realized how high it was getting, they didn't have time to get sandbags. >> not with how fast it came. the city is great in dropping off pallets to us but it came on too quickly from us. >> reporter: across the street we met the cervantes family. they had balloons and tables set up. cleaning was not in their plans. this was their son's second birthday. instead they're faced with this.

>> i see so much of this is wet. >> it's gone. we'll have to replace everything. the bed didn't get wet, at least we have a bed to sleep on. >> reporter: the silver lining across the neighborhood where shovels were found in every corner, neighbors helping with their bare hands, trying to get their street back to normal. in the fillmore, they're trying to save their city. >> how nice of you! >> reporter: luz pena, abc 7 news. a tree toppled on two people in san francisco. they were walking on the sidewalk when the tree fell at locust and clay street. for a time the fire department urged people to avoid the area. you can see the soil around the roots is saturated. both people hit by the tree said they were in pain and they were taken to the hospital. at least one parked car was damaged. the rain yesterday afternoon also caused several problems in the east bay, especially on the hills and freeways.

abc 7 news reporter anser hassan has more from orinda where there were two highway crashes including one that was deadly.>o shows westbound highway 24 before the caldecott tunnel. a solo spinout blocking one lane of traffic, possibly due to the wet roads, but causing a backup onto orinda city streets. >> that last bit of freeway before the off-ramp took me 20 minutes because everything was so backed up. >> reporter: once past the tunnel, the rain met with heavy winds in the oakland hills. >> i was home here with my mom and two of my kids. and we heard one of the loudest noises i've ever heard. >> reporter: the noise was several massive pine trees crashing through the roof. nobody was hurt. along with figuring out repairs, they're also trying to prevent more damage. >> there is one wall still standing, it is leaning heavily, and we are on a slope. we'll want to make sure that

day in the north shattuck in berkeley. there will be nutcracker dancers and tap dancing christmas trees. the free event runs from 10:00 until 3:00 on shattuck between vine and rose streets. some san francisco harley riders will drop off toys at zuckerberg general hospital. [ engines revving ] the group will hand-deliver gifts for pediatric patients there. it is the 36th year of the annual toy run. dozens of harley riders take part every year. and lisa, it seems like the weather might cooperate today. >> yes, i think so. we're seeing a few peeks of sun out there. the showers definitely winding down. a look at the san mateo where it is certainly cloudy. numbers are all pretty much in the low to mid-50s.

is recovering in the mission district. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has more on what the police say is the first officer-involved shooting this year. >> i heard probably six to eight gunshots than you heard someboy yelling. >> i remember it being really loud. >> reporter: neighbors heard gunfire around 8:30 saturday morning in the mission district. police say officers were responding to reports of a possible burglary in progress at a home here at 23rd and kapp streets. that's when they say they encountered the suspect. >> the suspect assaulted the officers and an officer-involved shooting enissued. >> reporte ensued. >> i saw a little scuffle between two police officers and what appears to be an intoxicated person. right away they let off eight shots. >> reporter: police say the suspect was wounded. they say the man was armed but offered few details. >> the suspect assaulted the officers with a weapon. >> reporter: can yo tell us

why, what kind of a weapon? >> i'm unable to describe or explain the type of weapon. >> reporter: one officer was injured in the incident, now recovering at the hospital. police chief william scott was at the scene for the investigation that's now under way. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. two families are getting $7 million each after two teens were electrocuted in a canal this past april in dixon. the solano irrigation district issued an apology for what happened. the teens had jumped into the water to try to rescue a dog. one of the mothers said the boys grabbed a metal railing on the walking bridge on the irrigation canal. they had no idea it was charged. it's unclear how the bridge became energized. the lawsuit claimed electrical equipment was not properly grounded. now to the christmas tree unveiled at a state capital and why it's brought some outrage. abc 7 news reporter janai norman has the details. >> three, two, one! >> reporter: this morning,

uproar around the rhode island statehouse days after the governor revealed the state's first ever artificial christmas tree. the spruce lighting up quite the debate. some residents say the faux fir i simply an imposter. >> the scandal is absurd. >> reporter: for years farmers have donated christmas trees to the statehouse. >> it's ridiculous. the governor bought a fake artificial tree for $6,500. >> reporter: but the governor says fire safety was behind this year's yuletide decision. >> it's just a practical decision to keep it beautiful and keep us safe through the whole holiday season. >> reporter: the decision practically splitting the state in two. real versus fake. >> i would say to all the people seeing this show today, go out there and support your local farmers. >> reporter: janai norman, abc news, new york. a fedex driver was not thrilled about having to pick up

a package. his meltdown was captured on the homeowner's ring doorbell camera. >> every single [ bleep ] day. [ bleep ]. >> the homeowner said she ordered a couch twice, but both times fedex delivered it damaged. she was having the company send it back. the video shows the driver trying to lift the 144-pound package into the truck, swearing on the phone the entire time. he eventually got the package in and yelled one more thing at the house before driving off. >> [ bleep ]! >> the homeowner says she just wants an apology. fedex says the behavior in the video is unacceptable and it's taking the appropriate steps to address this matter. a group of children wci fan flight to experience the magic of the holidays. unity airlines took more than 60 patients from bay areane with s and mrs. claus on board and

in on emerson street south of menlo park. we've had some showers from the peninsula to the east bay. further south, lighter runs, fremont avenue, still certainly some wet pavement out there. we've got more rain in the santa cruz mountains. a stronger line is to the south of us, south of san jose. looking at mt. hamilton, about 40 degrees, still some rain coming down there. the showers south of santa cruz from davenport into monterey, you can see this stronger line all push to ing to the east. in the mid-30s in the mountains with light snow. we have our winter storm warning that will expire as about noontime. between now and then, above 6,500 feet. we can see a couple of inches, from four to eight inches at our highest peak. good news that it changed it back over to snow. it is 2 1/2 mile visibility for you in petaluma where things are getting a little better along

the coast. 6 miles, a 1 on our storm impact scale, winding down in the morning hours with showers becoming more isolated. they'll hang on into the south bay and santa cruz mountains in the next few hours. looking at very light returns, anywhere from just a couple of hundredths to anc nt.gr a look from our east bay, you see a little bit of sunshine there. 54 degrees in santa rosa, 57 by the delta. finally, some fog as well. it's going to take a while for high pressure to build in and bring us back to a drier pattern, but that's the plan for tomorrow. this morning it's the showers. they're ending. then a random shower throughout the afternoon, partly cloudy. a weak system for tuesday into wednesday. as we look at the totals, certainly not uniform out there at all. over a tenth in hayward where half moon bay is picking up less than a half inch. this 98/100ths in san francisco,

an inch of hour. that's why you saw all those problems yesterday. mill valley, over a tenth. you can see parts of the peninsula are doing pretty well as well as the south bay. we're from 2 inches of rain to 9 1/2 inches of rain across the bay area. so that brings us from 49% of normal in oakland to about 122% of normal up in santa rosa. this is where the system is winding down today. sunday afternoon, getting into partly cloudy skies. a couple of hundredths to a tenth to two tenths out there. we're dry monday, no umbrella there. on tuesday, maybe a few sprinkles. into wednesday, no problems. thursday, a system rides to our north, maybe sneaking into the sierra nevada by next weekend. overall we're certainly turning a corner on this wet regime. 59 in san mateo and napa today. the seven-day forecast, we'll drop the 1 on the storm impact scale throughout the afternoon, allowing for several dry days.

throw out 350,000 cellphones every day. >> this is terrible for the environment. and we're lot more money than we should. >> reporter: emily rush is executive director of calperg which discovered a different friend. instead of throwing out electronics, millions of us are trying to fix them. >> i'm shocked at how many people do actually go online to try and fix their own products. >> reporter: calpirg found 8 million californians logged on to ifixit.com last year. the most common items users wanted to primary, cellphones were number one. second were laptops. then cars, then gaming consoles. others included desktop computers, tablets, headphones, and vacuum cleaners. that's just one website. many more of us find help on youtube. >> far too often we're finding there are barriers put in place. >> reporter: the calpirg report

very light returns and in the hills in the east bay. the main activity sinks southward to the central coast. you can see the line of heavy showers moving on in there. but we have brighter conditions this afternoon. this is san rafael. this is san jose where you're going to see a few showers linger throughout the later morning hours. all in all, it is a much drier day today with 57 in concord and as we go through the afternoon, the fog lifts throughout the morning, and the showers are really a thing of the past. we'll talk about the week ahead and whether or not we see any rain coming up for this week. liz? >> lisa, thank you. now for the investigation into whether the attack at the naval base in pensacola was an act of terror. investigators are loong int gun. they say he made a visit to new york city in the days before the attack. abc 7 news reporter stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: this morning

several classmates of the naval dergoi qstioning after unmen are friday's deadly attack. the saudi national, part of a training program for international military personnel in the u.s., opened fire, killing three u.s. navy sailors and injuring eight others including law enforcement officers. investigators looking into whether the attack was motivated by terror. >> i can't say it's terrorism at this point. i think we need to let the investigators, the fbi do its work. >> reporter: the fbi now retracing the steps of 21-year-old ahmed mohammed al shamrani, a second lieutenant in the royal saudi air force, including a recent trip to new york city where he visited several attractions. that visit now believed to be tourist in nation. >> over ten patients confirmed. >> reporter: al shamrani killing 23-year-old joshua watson, 19-year-old mohammed saithan and

as this system sinks to the south of us. this is a live look outside. walnut creek, where it is cleared out nicely in the past few hours. rainfall, it was certainly not uniform yesterday. we had heavy downpours in san francisco, nearly an inch of rain in an hour. and with all that runoff, we had big time problems in the city, about 3/4 inch in the east bay. still looking some rain in hayward, 3/4 inch or better in redwood city. lighter amounts towards antioch and brentwood with less than a 1/2 inch in napa and san jose. outside our exploratorium camera, pretty cloudy here. the system continues to sink south of us. as we zero in right now on parts of 280 south of mountain view, you can see los altos and wet weather, cascade drive, and widening the view, this is south into the santa cruz mountains, some rain there. also mt. hamilton looking at
