breaking news in america this morning, deadly volcano eruption sending ash and particles into the sky. this morning what royal caribbean is saying about passengers on the island as shocking new video of the eruption comes in. naval base attack. the fbi tweeting the mass shooting as an act of terrorism. did the saudi air force member have help planning the attack and how authorities said he legally obtained the gun. impeachment showdown, a critical hearing getting under way in just hours with democrats laying out their argument as republicans intensify their counterattacks, plus the long awaited report released today on whether the fbi conducted illegal surveillance on a former trump campaign aide.

for janai norman. we begin with breaking news this morning, the death toll is rising after a volcano erupted at a popular tourist destination in new zealand. >> dozens are missing. police are not sure how many were on the island because volcano experts are warning rescue crews to stay away fearing another eruption. tourists were seen walking inside the rim of the white island volcano just before it blew. >> officials say some of the tourists are from new zealand. others from other countries. this video you're seeing was taken by an american from san francisco. this is new zealand's most active volcano, and it had been showing increased activity recently. >> on the scheme of things for volcanic eruptions, it's not large, but if you were close to that, it is not good. it has quieted down, but we can't be certain there won't be another eruption in the next 24 hours. >> a royal caribbean cruise from sydney was near the island for sightseeing. the company issuing a statement saying, quote, we can confirm that a number of our guests were touring the island today. "ovation of the seas" will

remain overnight until we learn more about the situation. now, to the other big story this morning, the deadly shooting spree at a florida navy base. that's now being investigated as an act of terrorism. >> authorities are focusing on a motive and if the saudi air mann acted alone or was part of a larger network. saudi officials and authorities are reportedly trying to determine if the suspect was radicalized during a trip back home late last year. abc's trevor ault has more. >> reporter: hundreds of federal agents continue to investigate friday's deadly shooting at naval air station pensacola which the fbi now presumes was an act of terror. >> i know that the community is safe and there's not any sort of immediate direct threat of any additional terrorist acts at this time. >> reporter: the suspected shooter, mohammed alshamrani, a second lieutenant in the royal saudi air force, was in the u.s. as part of a pilot training program. >> you have foreign military personnel coming to our base. they should not be doing that if they hate our country. >> reporter: the gunman's

saudi classmates are being kept on base and are cooperating with questioning. sources telling abc news investigators are looking into claims by alshamrani's classmates that he watched mass shooting videos at his home days before the attack. >> members of the fbi's joint terrorism task force are working tirelessly to discern if any possible ideology that may have been a factor in this attack. >> reporter: the fbi is now carefully reviewing surveillance images and cell phone video taken immediately after the rampage as families mourn the loss of three young lives, 23-year-old ensign joshua watson, 19-year-old airman mohammed sameh haitham and 21-year-old airman apprentice cameron walters. members of the community lining up to pay respects during a solemn procession returning the fallen to the naval air station. >> i urge anyone who feels they need a little extra support to reach out and get the help they need. >> reporter: the two officers injured when they heroically confronted the gunman are now recovering.

trevor ault, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to trevor there and the fbi says the gun used in the shooting was purchased legally in florida. normally it's not legal for non-u.s. officials to obtain a gun, however a federal law allows official representatives from certain foreign governments like saudi arabia to obtain a gun. we turn now to capitol hill and the fast-moving push to impeach president trump. another public hearing is set for today with house democrats poised to make their case to kick president trump out of office. the president is refusing to participate, but the democrats worked through the weekend rapidly moving to draw up articles of impeachment. abc's serena marshall joins us from washington. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kenneth, good morning. this week is going to start with democrats introducing charges against the president that's likely to include obstruction and abuse of power and it'll wrap up with a committee vote on impeachment. the second official impeachment hearing under way this morning and this time it's the lawyers testifying before congress. >> we're in the process now of

focusing that into something that, you know, holds him accountable. >> reporter: democrats working through the weekend as lawyers from both parties from both the judiciary and intelligence committees will present the findings of their investigations and democrats say theirs shows a rock solid case. >> i think the case we have if presented to a jury would be a guilty verdict in about three minutes flat. >> reporter: not participating though the president's team, even as his personal lawyer rudy giuliani spent the past week in ukraine, something even republicans were uncomfortable with. >> but it is weird that he's over there. >> i think he wants to go before congress and say and also to the attorney general and to the cooperative justice, i think he's found plenty. >> reporter: some democrats pointing to that as a reason to continue their breakneck pace. >> are you moving too quickly? that would be a valid concern if the president wasn't moving quickly to have his lawyer go over to ukraine and continue to cheat our elections. >> reporter: the president meanwhile continues to call the whole thing a sham. >> we had a perfect conversation.

>> reporter: even as he took to twitter sunday firing off nearly 100 tweets and retweets in just one day, most targeting democrats and the inquiry as republicans remain united behind him. there are currently no hearings scheduled for after today but we expect the chair of the judiciary committee to introduce those articles of impeachment in the coming days. kenneth, toni. >> all right, serena, thank you. as you mentioned, the justice department's internal report on the russia report is coming out. the inspector general found the fbi had enough legitimate evidence to open the probe, a rejection of the president's claim that it was an illegal witch-hunt but the report is also expected to document errors and omissions by investigators. the attorney general is overseeing a separate but similar criminal investigation. time now for a look at your weather for this monday morning. good morning. we're watching this powerful storm make its way into the great lakes.

♪ les poissons les poissons, how i love les poissons ♪ the voice behind chef louis in "the little mermaid" has died. rene auberjonois lost his battle against lung cancer at his home in los angeles sunday. his film career began in 1970 in the movie "m.a.s.h." he also received a number of tony nominations for his work on broadway and had regular roles in the '80s sitcoms "benson" and the '90s sigh tie "star trek: deep space nine." he was 79. the california man planning a mass shooting is due in court today. investigators say steve homoki filmed and posted chilling videos on youtube in which he appeared to be rehearsing a terror attack. the videos show a man pointing assault weapons at people from a hotel window in downtown san diego. a tipster led police to homoki saying he had planned -- had a plan in place.
