>> good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. we wanted to help get them some answers. >> on saturday water was 16 inches deep in some spots. >> some of the worst flooding hit the west portal neighborhood. >> luz pena is live from the area. luz, how are people doing tonight? >> reporter: dan, at least 12 homes were impacted by this flood. we were here saturday and did see many neighbors come out with shovels trying to help each other. the new normal, cleaning crews coming in and out of these homes pulling everything out that has to go. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: it's one of the biggest floods this neighborhood has seen. the fact that they have two others to compare it to they say is too much. >> i have ptsd when it rains. i'm not sleeping well every time it rains, even when it like -- you know, the forecast is like 0.1 inches, i like wake up at the sounding of rain.

>> reporter: the heavy downpour over the weekend had nowhere to go once it hit wawona street and 15th avenue. water was gushing out from underneath these homes. sewage spread across this road. >> she's wearing a hazmat suit to suck up the stuff in the intersection. that stuff was a foot deep in my master bedroom. why am i not in a hazmat suit? >> reporter: these residents are dealing with the aftermath and paying up to $5,000 to clean up. >> it takes 24 hours, especially with the water that came up from outside, it takes 24 hours to get mold inside. if we don't do that right away, there's a lot of damage in their homes. >> reporter: they had crews working over the weekend but only deal with what's on the surface. >> our crews came out with a sweeper truck and helped clear up that debris after the incident. >> reporter: we questioned the san francisco public utilities commission. they are in charge of the drains and responsible for areas prone to flooding. their answer, the drain system was not big enough, but they say

they have a plan. >> we're in the design phase of a program that will increase the size of the drain, storm drain system in that neighborhood. we expect that to begin in 2021. and again, that will bring it up to the level of service of the five-year storm. >> reporter: meanwhile norman yee said the city has to do more and speed up implementing the $700 million that we already allocated to make improvements to upgrade our storm drains and sewer systems. answers that are not good enough for many. >> my biggest concern is that this neighborhood gets ignored and taken for granted. that's not right. >> reporter: and that drain system the city is working on won't be implemented until 2021, which means if more rain falls here, the chances of this getting flooded again are extremely high. back to you. >> now, luz, who helped those

neighbors during the flood, and what are the options now? >> reporter: yeah, so we were here saturday and the only people that we saw here helping were the neighbors. they were helping themselves and san francisco fire department. now, the options they have now in case of another flood that we expect for it to happen is basically to brace themselves with more sandbags and to claim with the city for any property damages. here live in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> all right, luz, thanks very much. another storm is in the forecast for tomorrow, although it's a light one, ranking 1 on the abc 7 storm impact scale. drew tuma is here. drew, how much rain did we get this weekend? >> some spots saw well over 2 inches of rain. it was the intensity of the rain on saturday that caused that localized flooding like you saw in west portal and parts of san francisco. we're not expecting that intensity of rain with our next storm system but rain totals very impressive. santa rosa, more than 2.5 inches

of rain, close to 1.5 in san francisco. livermore and san jose coming in with just about half of an inch of rain. there's our next storm system. we're tracking a cold front on live doppler 7. that will move in here tomorrow night. ahead of it, though, we'll have some issues with fog once again. we had that dense fog this morning. it will repeat tomorrow morning. visibility and miles for the tuesday morning commute. you can see a lot of places with zero, that is very dense fog. use caution again tomorrow morning. we will track areas of dense fog. add a little extra time and extra distance between the cars in front of you. we'll take a closer look at the next chance of rain and who has the best bet of seeing that wet weather tomorrow in the full accuweather forecast. if you haven't already, download the abc 7 news app so you can access live doppler 7 like this any time on your phone. it will also send alerts when severe weather strikes. in the south bay, this may look like little red riding

hood, but a business owner says it's really a burglar. a san jose store is looking to their community to help catch the thief. chris reyes is live with the story for us tonight. hi, kris. >> reporter: hi, ama, good evening, dan. that theft was captured by that security camera in the corner of this building here in willow glen. that camera belongs to this flower shop. the owners told me that the thieves took off with at least $10,000 worth of their belongings, including a client's valuable heirloom. they want the public's help to identify these thieves. take a closer look at the footage. >> they ended up opening this loading dock. >> reporter: this is what was caught on their security camera, two people scoping out the back. the business posted this photo on facebook, a woman holding an urn. that urn is a valuable heirloom that belonged to one of his clients. >> we're talking about 4:40 a.m. when they got here, they were able to get into the space.

they went straight to my office. containers were in this particular spot. whatever they can -- ended up taking from here, went into my drawer, got stuff from here. went inside the printer where i have the rest of the files and computers. they took as much as they could. >> reporter: the owners say at least $10,000 worth of items were stolen. they filed a police report, but it's their facebook community that's been more helpful with tips an leads. >> everybody is texting me. today we got a hint of the names, possible names for the people. there's another person that ended up calling us. she works with the homeless and with the people in need and she's like i'm familiar with who that person is. >> reporter: escalante says the been in his store before. he worries for this complex he's in full of independent businesses. in october their neighbor, good karma bikes, was hit twice by theft. we spotted broken glass in the

parking lot and he says there's been a number of break-ins and vandalism the last year. >> i think people are tired at this point to just be doing the reports, right, to the police because no one is doing anythin anything. >> reporter: all right. you know, what they told me is that this is really hurtful during the holiday season, but what they really wanting back is that heirloom. and again they're asking for the public's help. take a closer look and follow the thread on their facebook page. all of that is on our website, abc7news.com. kris reyes. in the east bay something went wrong during a lab test this afternoon in emeryville leading to a hazardous material situation. sky 7 was over the scene and you can see all the first responders off powell. we were told by the alameda county fire department that just before 3:00 p.m., someone in a lab placed a chemical in a tub of water. it created a reaction and small fire causing the room to get hot. firefighters were called in and

evacuated everyone from the building. fortunately, no one was hurt. in oakland today, abc 7 news was first on scene when a van full of stolen dogs was founding. laura anthony tweeted this video showing petted carriers in the van as well as this video of an oakland animal control officer holding one of the rescued puppies. the van was filled with dogs when someone stole it from the parking lot of a hotel in fremont. investigators used the van's built-in gps and tracked it to oakland with 24 dogs still inside. police are still trying to determine if any are missing. julie bingham runs a dog transport business and says at the time the van was stolen, it was locked with the engine running so the animals had ventilation, food and water. >> i gave the officer a big hug. i was literally away from the van like three and a half, four hours at the most. >> reporter: oakland police say the accused thief was trying to sell the dogs. a second man detained by officers says he was just trying to buy one.

one of the most basic steps in building a better bay area of course is safety. the bay area's largest city hit an unfortunate milestone over the weekend. the number of pedestrian fatalities reached an all-time high. the latest incident happened on one of san jose's most dangerous roads. chris nguyen explains why the problem could get even worse. >> reporter: a tragedy in san jose has some people thinking twice before hitting the roads. saturday night a man walking in traffic on story road near karl street was killed after being struck by a vehicle. in this case, the driver stayed and cooperated with police, who say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors. >> it gets you thinking and it makes you kind of aware of the potential that we are in a very shared space between pedestrians and vehicles. >> reporter: the incident marked san jose's 25th pedestrian fatality of the year, an all-time high. >> our challenge is to fix the environment so that everybody is

equally safe. >> reporter: kelly snyder says the high fatality rate isn't a surprise given the city's overall growth and dependency on automobiles. >> we have more people, we have more pedestrians, we have more drivers. and that means statistically there's going to be a greater chance of conflict. >> reporter: san jose's vision zero program aims to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city, but city officials will be the first to admit they have a long way to go. >> big infrastructure changes take a lot of time. changing the way that roads are built is a long process. >> reporter: as the nights get longer and the roads get wetter, the city expects vehicle fatalities to go up. they have displayed signs like this asking drivers to be mindful. >> to be on their best behavior, to look out for others and not let their bad decision become somebody's fatal incident. >> reporter: this is the city's 56th traffic-related fatality of the year. we're in san jose tonight. i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news.

san francisco's vision zero program will report new data tomorrow. abc 7 news is getting a sneak peek tonight. unfortunately, there's not a lot of good news. the overall number of severe and critical traffic injuries hit an all-time high last year. critical injuries to pedestrians had been decreasing for years but recently started going up. the number of bicyclists hurt has been pretty steady. more motorcyclists are suffering severe injuries lately. they have hit in fact an all-time high. the report studies an eight-year period starting in 2011. vision zero was adopted in 2014. its goal is to implement changes and eliminate traffic fatalities. and we spent a week on ways to protect yourself and your family during safety week. part of our effort to build a better bay area. all of our stories have been posted on our website. just go to abc7news.com and scroll down and click on building a better bay area. now a live look at the

a popular doughnut shop on the peninsula is closing. joining the many other businesses that are being priced out. if you're from san carlos or live near there, you've heard of chuck's doughnut shop probably. tonight the store owner is saying good-bye to her local clientele and lyanne melendez is live on the peninsula tonight as she also says good-bye to an institution. >> reporter: oh, my god, dan, let me tell you, i look at these doughnuts and i promise you that i feel like i'm gaining all this weight. when people found out that chuck's was closing, they came from places like oakland, pittsburg, san francisco to claim their last dozen. chuck's doughnut shop in san carlos has long lived up to its reputation as being one of the best on the peninsula. >> so i've got some apple frilters, glazed doughnuts. >> old-fashioned chocolate and

tomorrow night we'll track showers for some and there's even a chance for drizzle first thing in the morning on wednesday. we'll show you the hour-by-hour forecast in one minute. right now we're slowly falling through the 50s. 54 in the city, 55 in oakland, 54 in san jose. napa one degree cooler coming in at 53 degrees. so overnight tonight the big story will be that fog turning dense in spots. numbers will continue to fall into the 40s over the next 12 hours so it is a cool start to the day again tomorrow morning but the fog is the biggest issue. first thing in the morning we'll stop the clock. your tuesday as the morning rush is under way. when you see those numbers reach 0, that is visibility in miles. that is very dense fog like napa an concord first thing in the morning. and the fog, like it was this morning, very gradual to get out of here. so by lunchtime we're still seeing foggy spots, but visibility is improving throughout the day. so highs on your tuesday with that morning fog, overcast skies

will linger. so limited sunshine on our tuesday. 53 in santa rosa and concord, up to about 59 degrees. then we'll track a chance for showers tomorrow night into wednesday morning. we're not expecting anywhere near the amount of rain we expected the past weekend. the best chance is in the north bay. scattered light showers, really minimumal rainfall and a low impact event. so we'll start the clock, 6:30 tomorrow evening. a lot of cloud cover, some drizzle close to ukiah. as we advance the clock into the early morning hours on our wednesday, you can find the chance of any wet weather really confined to the north bay and right along the coastline. i think a lot of spots along the peninsula and the south bay and the east bay will remain dry. we'll see a lot of cloud cover over the next couple of days. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. morning fog tomorrow. meteorologist mike nicco will be tracking that fog for you

the former college baseball player whose battle with als inspired the ice bucket challenge died today. he was diagnosed with the disease and helped inspire the ice bucket challenge in 2014. i took that challenge, many people did in the media. it took off as people posted videos of themselves doused with cold water and challenged their friends to do the same and raised $220 million in that year alone. pete frates was 34 years old. a 24-year-old concord woman has won a reprieve from u.s. immigration officials to stay here two more years to receive a life-saving medicine. isabel bueso moved here to take part in a clinical trial for a rare genetic disorder.

she faced deportation when the trump administration ended the program that allowed her to stay. she put out a statement saying while the past few months have been trying on both me and my family, it haslso been incredible to receive such an outpouring of love and support from people all over the country. the impeachment battle heated up today as democrats outlined their case against president trump. just minutes after it got started, republicans quickly made it clear they objected to the proceedings altogether, saying democrats are rushing impeachment with the 2020 election looming. democratic congressman jerry nadler defended the hearing saying the committee is trying to prevent president trump from undermining the integrity of the upcoming election. >> for anyone to think that this was not a baked deal is not being honest with themselves. >> the scheme by president trump was so brazen, so clear, supported by documents, actions, sworn testimony.

confirmed dead tonight. eight are missing and authorities are warning that they don't believe there are any survivors on the island. >> san francisco resident michael shade was on the island just before the eruption. he tweeted these stunning images of the eruption, some of them from a boat just offshore. the software engineer says his tour group was standing at the edge of the main crater just 30 minutes before. >> the volcano is on the island called white island. it's a little ways away from the north island. abc news reporter elizabeth herr has more. >> reporter: survivors rushed to hospitals and taken off a small island in new zealand after a deadly volcanic eruption. this as tour boats raced away from the plume of steam and ash flying thousands of people into the air. the explosion hitting just after 2:00 p.m. on new zealand's white island. according to officials, dozens of tourists or on or near the island when the volcano erupted

york times." back here at home, living in the bay area we are surrounded by some of the world's most epic and beautiful geology, but how much do you actually know about the hayward fault or the marin headlands, just to pick a couple. a new virtual field guide created by a group of geologists, allows us all to explore the earth around us. >> this is what it looked like off the beach during jurassic park. >> reporter: this foggy monday morning we arrived at the marin headlands for a field trip of sorts with christey roe, a professor who grew up in mill valley. >> i've always really been obsessed with the geology of this area. >> reporter: she's one of five geologists who have created streetcar 2 seduction, a guide for people to explore the rocks and faults that surround us. >> it's a collaboration between the american geophysical union and google. we're taking some geologic field trip guides around the area and transformed them for the digital age.

>> reporter: this new digital experience is an update to a guide book from the '70s and '80s by a geologist. it uses google earth technology, videos and photographs to explain the geology of several sites, including glen canyon park, and more. this has facts about the world around us. this is a formation called pillow. it is frozen lava from a hundred million years ago. >> we're constantly concerned about the motion of faults or landslides or other phenomena and it's the geology that is controlling all of that. we're hoping to make it more accessible. >> reporter: if you want to explore this, you need google earth or google chrome on your phone or desktop. we have a link on our web page. when you get here, click street car trips. then marin headlands, for instance, take trip. this google earth map of the area will come up with all the different sites. i'll click marin headlands. a video pops up explaining the
