dog, papo, is pleading for his retur return. >> we're worried he's lonely, scared. we just want him back, no questions asked. >> police think the man who stole the van tried to sell the dogs to people and they were detained. san francisco will unveil the new parking lot to allow people who live in their cars to park safely. mayor london breed and other city leaders will be at the site today near the balboa park b.a.r.t. station. the lot will open by next week. it will hold 30 vehicles for a 90-day period. the site will also have case managers, portable toilets and a portable shower available three times a week. >> the time is 4:30. good morning. we'll start with a quick update of weather and traffic where you live with mike. >> let's look at the fog. it's thicker and more widespread than yesterday. a few showers out there, that

will make things interesting and challenging for the morning commute. here is walnut creek. looking down 680, looking down towards 24, there's some fog waiting for you. here's a look at our roof camera, the embarcadero wet, a few puddles out there from the showers that hit us during the overnight hours. when you step out, day planner shows some showers around, 52 to 54 at 7:00. showers become more scattered to random as we head throughout the day. you may need the umenyiora from time to time. then the showers will pick up in intensity and also in coverage heading towards 7:00. temperatures still very mild in the mid to upper 50s. we have more chances of rain coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. i'll be back in a minute with that. jobina? >> breaking traffic news. the highway patrol is investigating a fatal crash on interstate 280 in cupertino. it happened in the southbound direction at the lawrence expressway off-ramp.

this is video from the scene. two cars were involved. a person inside one of them may have been evicted from the vehicle. officers performed cpr on the vehicle, it did not work. the chp shut down the off-ramp. back out here, we do have live look at 880 at the coliseum, those headlights moving southbound for everyone, just to give you perspective there. smooth ride down, and we do not have issues in san rafael either. this is a live look at 101, clear ride there as well. just want to move on to our drive times here. we have walnut creek to dublin, 13-minute ride. santa rosa to san francisco, 47 minutes. highway 1 to los gatos, 20 minutes. the man accused in last month's deadly stabbing on a b.a.r.t. train is due in court. 39-year-old jermaine brim stabbed oliver tyrone to death when williams tried stepping in to stop brim from stealing the shoes of a sleeping passenger.

major a major newcomer to the 2020 race is touching down in san francisco today. michael bloomberg is joining former governor brown to attend a climate change convention. it follows bloomberg's recent endorsement from another big name, san jose mayor, sam liccardo. >> mike bloomberg has shown he's willing to take on big oil, he's willing to take on the gun industry, he's willing to take on big soda, coke and pepsi. >> liccardo will join bloomberg's team as a california campaign co-chair. bloomberg is skipping early voting states to focus on states like california that vote on super tuesday in march. a recent uc berkeley poll found bloomberg to be favored by 2% of the state's likely democratic voters. we are following the latest on a deadly shootout in jersey city, new jersey. investigators are treating the attack at a kosher grocery store as an act of anti-semitism.

the shootout happened yesterday afternoon. six people including a police officer were killed. two others were injured. detectives say it's still unclear exactly what sparked the chaos. officers say shots were initially fired after two gunmen ran and took cover in the grocery store. what came next is what you're seeing now, an hours-long battle turning the area into a war zone. >> shots, right there! >> every time any approach is attempted or anyone comes out of cover, he opens fire. >> one 13-year veteran was killed along with the two gunmen and three hostages inside the grocery store. dozens of schools in the area stayed done lockdown for several hours as this went on. the new jersey superintendent said he felt that decision gave police less interference. you can watch his interview on "good morning america" coming up at 7:00.

look at the weather with mike nicco. people need to watch out for rain again today? >> yes, we have some rain, some leftover slick spots because of the rain last night and we'll have rain increasing heading into the evening hours. for your bay area commute, no matter what you're taking, just be prepared for random showers. the possibility of getting wet today. let's look at live doppler 7. you can see the best chance is on the peninsula. the east bay, the hills, the dublin grade, the sunol grade, up into mount hamilton. let's see which way this is moving. almost west and east, almost a northerly jog. could get up around highway 4, around byron and discovery bay and antioch. re is the north bay. it will be quiet until the evening hours. that's when we'll get our better chance of showers. the east bay valleys, they have a chance of random showers throughout the day. by 7:00, an uptick in that chance. also for the east bay, we have a chance of showers throughout the

for ka hoe. tahoe. a little bit of a mix today. rain light. rain thursday, snow friday, saturday and sunday. >> the university of california system is facing a lawsuit over s.a.t. and a.c.t. scores. >> groups say using them as an admissions requirement is illegal, unconstitutional and discriminatory. amy hollyfield is live in uc berkeley with more on that. >> officials on this campus are already showing signs of getting rid of the s.a.t. and the a.c.t., now the issue is headed for court. plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed against uc say the standardized tests are bias against poor and minority students. they say if colleges use these tests as part of the admissions process, then the universities are illegally discriminating against some students. uc berkeley's chancellor and chief academic officer have already said that they support dropping the test scores as part of the required admissions

process. more than 1,000 colleges have already made the change. the group that filed the lawsuit is made up of students,ed a vo ka s ed advocacy groups and a school in compton. the attorney general is planning to hand subpoenas to half of the state's catholic diocese. this is according to the "l.a. times." the office is issues notices to diocese in sacramento, fresno, orange, san jose, los angeles, and san francisco. the california catholic conference says it is not clear why the subpoenas are coming saying the diocese have been voluntarily sharing records of any clergy s.e.cex abuse. 22-year-old joseph wells and 20-year-old adama diop are accused of robberies in lafayette and oakland. and now they're facing 26

counts. the bay area news group reports the victims were inside the homes and separated so they wouldn't know how the other was being treated. the robbers used guns in and at least one case restrained the couple. the men are facing kidnapping, grand theft and carjacking charges. the semiannual gun buyback program will be held this saturday. it recovered over 1,000 guns over the years. >> reporter: the walls of the conference room are covered with photographs of young men who died. reminders that they were all shot to death. the youngest, this 12-year-old killed by a stray bullet. >> one gun that is not taken off the streets will kill somebody and can destroy everybody. so let's save as many lives as we can. >> reporter: since 2014, rudy corpus, a victim of gun violence himself has been doing that. this is his ninth gun buyback.

nearly 4,000 smoke detectors and cash bon mon cashin mon carbon monoxide alarms were donated. the donations help address a social justice issue for seniors and low income residents. >> balance whether you're going to pay a bill or save your life with a smoke detector is not fair. the large amount of donations of smoke detectors as well as carbon monoxide detectors that kidd has provided is life changi changing. >> this is the tenth year that abc7 had the honor of partnering with the save a life campaign. it was interesting to be out there and talking about the different impacts on peoples lives they make. they go around and make sure people have working smoke alarms, detectors, and so many people don't. they think they might, but it's expired. >> it's a good reminder for all of us. let's get a reminder of what

the weather is like today from meteorologist mike nicco. >> let's look outside from our east bay hills camera. you can see there's a little bit of fog trying to encroach upon san francisco and the peninsula. the east bay shoreline around emeryville, berkeley and oakland is clear. there is the possibility of fog moving into your neighborhoods and periods of showers throughout the day. less fog and more showers are tonight. the chances of wet weather extend into saturday. here's our temperatures today. mid 50s to near 60 in oakland, san mateo, fremont, palo alto, san jose, livermore, warmer around morgan hill and santa cruz. 62 and 63. tonight will be another mild night with lows not far off our average highs for this time of the year. low to mid 50s. the area of low pressure spinning up in the gulf of alaska. look at that moist flow. a lot of humidity in the air, just not a lot of energy. we'll have chances of rain, but most of the storms will be a 1, like today's, with showers more
