good morning, america. it's great to have you with us on this thursday morning. we tried to grill daisy ridley. >> i know. >> she's not giving up anything. >> no, no. maybe just a little. very little bit there, george. it is another critical day in the impeachment battle. the house judiciary committee will vote on articles of impeachment by the end of the day. >> the final hurdle before a full vote in the house and the committee is back in action this morning after debating the charges against president trump late into the night. senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is the last legislative hurdle before the house votes to impeach. for hours both sides made their case. it has been messy, heated and at times deeply emotional. democrats say they have to stop what one described as the president's constitutional crime

spree while republicans are railing against what they call a hot garbage impeachment. overnight, the passionate partisan divide on full display. >> if we do not respond to president trump's abuses of power, the abuses will continue. >> my heart breaks for a committee that has trashed this institution and this is where we are now. >> reporter: the debate pointed and personal. >> i believe the president abused the power of his office. >> reporter: democratic congresswoman lucy mcbath explaining she came to congress to fight for gun control after her son was shot and killed. >> after this vote, i will continue to champion the ideals this country instilled in me to stand up for the safety and security of our communities and to fight for an america i prayed that my son, jordan, would be proud of. >> reporter: but republicans say this is nothing more than a political push to oust the president. >> if anyone is guilty of abusing power or obstructing congress around here, it's the

democrats, not the president. >> this is the quickest, thinnest, weakest, most partisan impeachment in all of american presidential history. >> reporter: trump is railing against the charges and looking ahead to making his case on friendlier turf in the republican-controlled senate. >> they're impeaching me. you know why? because they want to win an election, and that's the only way to do it. >> reporter: democrats insist the evidence is rock solid. that the president abused his power by pressuring ukraine to investigate his 2020 rival and obstructed congress in order to protect the next election, democrats say they must impeach. >> the president is the smoking gun. president trump has solicited foreign interference before. he is doing it now and he will do it again. >> reporter: now, the debate will go on today for hours. this is the last chance for republicans to propose changes to these historic charges. at the end, after every member

of the committee has had a chance to have their say, the committee is likely to send it to the full house impeach the president sometime next week. >> right, the democrats on the judiciary committee are united. house speaker nancy pelosi expecting some defections on the floor. >> reporter: there are a few moderate democrats from swing districts to propose impeachment. they are concerned that voting for impeachment could hurt them in the next election. we know of at least two democrats so far who are going to oppose, and there are several more who still say they're undecided. >> looking ahead to that possible likely senate trial, there seems to be a consensus developing that it will be a quick trial. >> reporter: yeah, republicans we have talked to say they want this to move quickly. they are eyeing a trial of about two weeks. the president says he wants live witnesses including hunter biden and the whistle-blower, but

republicans we have talked to in the senate feel that the impeachment is hurting them politically. the challenge, of course, is to get the president on board with that strategy. >> mary, thanks very much. now to those new developments in that deadly attack in new jersey. thousands remembering the victims overnight as authorities learn more about the shooters saying surveillance video shows they clearly targeted that jewish market. adrienne bankert is in jersey city with the latest. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you too, robin, and law enforcement officials have confirmed that that surveillance video you spoke about is part of their investigation. now, while we're still awaiting an official word as to the motive, we know the location behind us here is more than a building. there's a synagogue located next door and this is all part of the small, but growing hasidic community here who grieved overnight at two huge funerals. overnight, thousands in brooklyn, new york, and jersey city, new jersey, moned the victims of the new jersey shooting rampage as those who lost their lives are laid to rest, new surveillance video

captures what preceded the killings inside this kosher market. >> there were multiple other people on the street so there were many other targets available to them that they bypassed to attack that place. so it was clearly -- that was their target and they intended to harm people inside. >> reporter: authorities say that just around 12:20 p.m. tuesday, two suspects parked right outside the market, slowly emerging from a stolen u-haul van armed with high-profile rifles. the suspects, 47-year-old david anderson and 50-year-old francine graham entered the store with at least one of them opening fire. police say the two may have been members of the black hebrew israelites, a group known to law enforcement for its anti-jewish and anti-police views. sources tell abc news anderson recently posted anti-semitic comments online, and investigators recovered a pipe bomb and religious writings inside that u-haul. >> no question this is a hate crime.

>> reporter: among the dead, market owner mindy ferencz, a mother of five, employee douglas rodriguez and a customer, 24-year-old moshe deutsch. >> a few hundred bullets went into a body of a 24-year-old child. how can we as a community, as people bear that? >> reporter: one person in the market was injured but survived. police officers eventually killed the suspects after a gun battle that lasted hours. >> we have an officer down. a lot of officers out in the open. >> kind of like we were at war. it sounded like "desert storm" out here, like we were at war. >> reporter: according to the state attorney general, the attackers were also prime suspects in the murder of an uber driver just days earlier. police believe it is why the two shot and killed detective joe seals who encountered the two at a nearby cemetery before driving to the kosher market. throughout the neighborhood cars and buildings are ridden with bullet holes.

the painful memory of the violence still fresh with police being commended for jumping into the line of fire. >> could have been far deadlier. the reason it was not due to the heroism of the men and women of the jersey city police department. >> reporter: state and federal officials tell us they hope to reveal more of what they've learned from those documents inside that stolen u-haul and the motive of these two suspects sometime today, michael. >> so much to process there, adrienne. thank you so much. now to that breaking news. an 18-year-old college freshman murdered last night in manhattan walking through a park near columbia university. abc's erielle reshef is there at morningside park with the latest. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. this horrifying killing has stunned this college community. this happened about 5:30 yesterday evening in a residential area near barnard college. 18-year-old freshman tessa majors seen here in "the columbia daily spectator" school newspaper was walking through the park behind me when she was

apparently jumped by a group of suspects who stabbed her multiple times in the torso after demanding money. then they fled. she managed to climb the steep stairs to the guard station behind me, but it was empty. the guard making rounds at the time. he came back about 30 minutes later to discover her. he called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital, but she did not survive. her cell phone which was not charged was found nearby alongside a knife and a hat. another person called 911 and said the suspect was apparently wearing a green jacket. police swarmed the hangout of a known robbery suspect who matched that description and found a trail of blood. this morning, the barnard president has said this entire community is grieving alongside tessa's family and they are working with the nypd to ensure student safety. george. >> yeah, just a horrifying story. okay, erielle, thanks very much. we're going to go overseas

now to new zealand where officials say the volcano is still highly volatile making it risky to return to the island and search for the missing. we're also learning more about the victims including two young brothers originally from chicago. marcus moore has the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: george, at first light here in new zealand, teams will begin the effort to recover those bodies in what is a race against time and a police official here said that a lot has to go right for this to work. in just hours, searchers will begin a risky effort to recover the bodies of eight missing people presumed dead from monday's eruption. this morning, the official death toll stands at eight and police now know the locations of six bodies on white island, another initially seen near a stream and the location of an eighth person still unknown. >> our first priority will be to get those six people off and we will have very limited opportunity to look about for the two others. >> reporter: on the ground the situation still, quote, highly volatile. scientists estimating a 40% to 60% chance of another eruption. families of the missing are desperate.

mark's brother hayden was a tour guide on a boat that brought tourists to the island. >> there's been two perfect opportunities to get out there and they haven't gone. >> reporter: at the time officials deeming the threat level too high to recover bodies on the ash-covered island. the hazards include fast-moving rocks, magma and scorching temperatures. >> let there be no mistake it is not a zero risk game. >> reporter: new overnight, details about the victims who perished. among the dead, two brothers, 13-year-old matthew and 16-year-old berend hollander and their parents remain missing presumed dead. barbara's parents releasing a statement saying, quote, we are together with our family grieving the loss of our loved ones, our amazing daughter, barbara hollander, and our son-in-law martin hollander were a wonderful couple and parents to our grandsons. we appreciate all the sons. >> when it came that it was they were the ones that were missing

it was pretty much unbelievable. >> reporter: this recovery operation is expected to take several hours and scientists on board a navy vessel monitoring the volcano and will be giving realtime information to the team on the ground. the hope is if an eruption is about to happen, they will be able to warn that team and get them off quickly. george. >> certainly hope so. marcus, thanks very much. in our next half hour, we'll have a closer look at the dangers of volcano tourism. also overseas, a high-stakes election under way in great britain. voters are heading to the polls right now deciding whether or not to keep prime minister boris johnson in power with brexit on the line yet again. james longman has the latest in london. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. this is the most important uk general election in a generation. britain is heading to the polls to elect a government in the hope of finding a solution to that brexit crisis. boris johnson, current prime minister and trump favorite, is fighting to keep his conservative party in power for a tenth year. his get brexit done slogan has cut through but the opposition

latest. good morning, amy. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, michael. this is pretty disturbing. according to this investigation by "the usa today" network, these athletes represented some of the best sports programs in the country including a number of top ncaa football teams. this morning, bombshell discoveries surrounding athletes disciplined for sexual misconduct. a "usa today" networks investigation finding that over the past five years, dozens of current and former division 1 athletes disciplined for sexual misconduct at their universities were able to transfer into new ncaa programs despite being punished by their original schools or the court system. >> we only got access to about 10% of the division 1 schools' disciplinary records and among them we found nearly 50 athletes who were found responsible for sexual assault and about a quarter of them actually transferred to other schools. >> reporter: mairin jameson was a junior at the university of

idaho in 2013 when she says she was sexually assaulted by wide receiver jahrie level, and she reported him to the school which eventually found him responsible and expelled him. but not before he transferred to stony brook university in new york where he played football for another two seasons. >> being a student athlete is a privilege and i feel like he should have lost that privilege. >> reporter: the ncaa responding that their policy states that colleges and universities must cooperate with all investigations into sexual violence, which must be managed in the same manner as investigations involving all other students and staff on campus. they say the ncaa board of governors will continue to evaluate its policies but certainly these findings are incredibly concerning. >> absolutely, to say the least. >> thank you so much, amy. we're going to turn now to dramatic video of an emergency landing caught on camera in phoenix. take a look at the surveillance footage from a nearby business catching the small plane going down on the street wednesday

one saying she felt sick and hopeless agreeing to the payout but felt there were no legal alternatives. on the verge of surgery harvey weinstein arriving at court with the aid of a walker. weinstein and his former company agreeing to settle claims with dozens of women who have alleged sexual misconduct against the disgraced movie mogul for $47 million. abc news has learned the deal will not require weinstein to admit any wrongdoing or pay anything to his accusers himself. the payouts instead coming from insurance companies representing weinstein's former studio, the weinstein company, and that 47 million isn't all going to the victims. about 16 million of it, nearly 35%, instead is going to lawyers for weinstein and other former members of the board. according to "the new york times," if the proposed deal is approved by the court, 18 victims ofeinstein's alleged victims would share $6.2 million with no one person getting more than $500,000 and $18.5 million

is going to be set aside for any future accusers. three of the women who accepted the deal tell "the new york times" they did so because they didn't see any alternative. one of the women saying accepting the deal made her feel defeated and hopeless. one of the three women, caitlin dulany who accepted the offer says she has mixed feelings. >> i have definitely felt defeated and hopeless going through this settlement process. i hope that this settlement can bring some kind of peace and some kind of closure for a lot of women. >> reporter: overnight, time's up reacting saying, if this is the best survivors could get, the system is broken. the announcement comes on the same day that weinstein appeared in court. his bail raised from $1 million to $5 million following claims that he violated his ankle bracelet monitoring requirements dozens of times. >> just because a woman makes a

claim does not mean it is true and just because mr. weinstein is accused of a crime does not mean that he is guilty. >> reporter: weinstein using a walker in court, his lawyers say ahead of surgery scheduled for today to relieve back pain from a car accident this august. and several of hiss alleged victims have rejected the payout claiming it's unfair. as for weinstein, no comment but he continues to deny any allegations of nonconsensual sex and, robin, you saw him using a walker in court. his reps say his health is deteriorating, he's having surgery today and his criminal sexual assault trial begins january 6th. >> thank you, paula. this is separate from that criminal trial. let's bring in our legal analyst dan abrams. first of all, i know not all the accusers agreed to this deal but some want to know why would any of them. >> so, there are a number of reasons. first of all, a number of them have legal challenges with their claims, statute of limitations, do they have enough evidence. they've lost some legal rulings

in court, et cetera. so for many of them they feel this is likely the best they can do in civil court. as you point out, though, this is the civil cases. this does not in any way impact the criminal case against harvey weinstein and that is ongoing and that is active and that is happening and that is moving forward in new york where he is charged with crimes where he could face in effect the rest of his life in prison. >> and we see from the piece that the money is coming from the insurance companies. why doesn't he have to pay himself? >> because in sexual harassment cases typically it is the company that is responsible for the acts of an individual like harvey weinstein. there's also insurance. so this is about how much can they get out of the insurance company but as you point out you have a bankruptcy court situation where the weinstein company is in bankruptcy, so you need a bankruptcy judge to sign off on it and a federal judge to sign off on it and when you have these vocal victims who are saying don't do this, this is not a done deal. >> big chunk of this money is going to pay weinstein's

lawyers. i was surprised by that. >> the insurance company is covering that company and so the lawyers have accrued all of these expenses. i'm not justifying, i'm not saying it's a good thing but that's the reality of the way these things work. >> thanks, dan. >> thank you so much. now to new concerns about that popular holiday gift, excuse me, home security cameras meant to keep you safe but now reports that hackers are breaking into them terrifying families. will reeve is here with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. they are a huge holiday gift, those home security cameras, but for some people whose systems were hacked into and their families messed with, they may have buyers' remorse or at the very least they have questions about how something like this could happen. this morning, two families say their ring camera systems were hacked. essentially allowing people into their homes without ever stepping foot inside. in mississippi, this chilling video from inside ashley lemay's home shows her 8-year-old daughter alyssa frantically searching for an invisible intruder. >> who is that?

active volcanoes here and until recently geologists thought they last erupted 30,000 years ago. recently they learned it was about 2,000 years ago and in geological terms that's a blink of an eye and that's what makes volcano tourism so potentially dangerous. volcanoes are unpredictable. volcanoes are a part of new zealand's tourism. this peak attracting 10,000 people each year. this featured in "the lord of the rings" movies but predicting volcanic eruptions is nearly impossible. there are 1500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, some closer than you think. there are 169 active volcanoes in the united states. some of them are massive mountains that loom over cities as mount st. helens does over portland and seattle. others right under your feet and the majesty and spectacle of these natural phenomena seem to have spurred tourism. but with at least 18 dead or presumed dead on monday's

eruption on white island, there is mounting concern about other volcanoes accessible to vacationers. this volcanologist and contributing writer for "national geographic" says most are not aware of the dangers and they are very real. the dangers are very real. we were in hawaii during the jarring kilauea volcano eruptions in 2018 facing fountains of lava and magma. >> the heat radiating off this fissure is incredible. that has been gushing lava into the air for three consecutive days. >> reporter: accompanying that molten lava clouds of toxic fumes. and we saw the dangers of volcano tourism there as well. a so-called lava bomb from that eruption smashing through a sightseeing boat's roof injuring two dozen people. >> a huge chunk of lava. >> reporter: dr. lee and his

republican-controlled senate. republicans tell us they want to do it quickly eyeing a trial of two weeks with no live witnesses. the challenge now, of course, to get the president on board with that strategy, george. >> that is coming fast. mary, thanks very much. george, weaver a new health headline this morning. a study saying sleeping too much could actually be bad for you. increasing your risk of suffering a stroke and dr. jennifer ashton will explain it to us. >> i know i sound bad but i feel fine. this really was a study about could too much be worse than too little or as bad and found it actually it is. it came out in the journal neurology. what they found people who slept more than nine hours a night who had poor sleep quality and/or napped during the day for more than 90 minutes had an increased risk of stroke. we usually hear about too little sleep being a problem. this study compelling too much could be just as bad. >> what do we need to keep in mind? >> i say sleep has a pr problem. we look at it like a luxury.

it's a medical necessity on par with food and fitness. the first thing we have to prioritize our sleep. we have to be consistent with our sleep. that means basically do the same thing during the week as we do on the weekends. the bedroom environment should be cold, dark and quiet. and if and this is probably the most important thing, robin, if you are finding that your sleep is suffering, and/or you're either getting too much or too little, do not hesitate to get a medical evaluation for some serious issues causing that. >> you know, a couple of months ago i stopped watching tv at night in my bedroom. it has made a world of difference. >> that is. >> take it out of the bedroom. >> what's the right amount? >> seven to nine hours is what most adults need and they need that every single night. >> what about a nap every once in a while. >> not bad. >> i was just making sure. >> a short nap, though. >> but you feel okay. >> i feel nine. i just, you know, sound like this. >> sound like a car. okay, thank you, jen.
