explain. eric? >> well, they're tiny, but if you don't have a place to live, this could be the biggest holiday gift you will ever receive. first presbyterian church of hayward took delivery of these six tiny homes today, and some time within the next couple of months, they'll be occupied. >> here's the sink right here, for dishes. and we have a heater right here. >> tiny doesn't adequately describe just how snug these homes are. 157 square feet with a small kitchen and full bath. >> i pray every night that please keep me safe. >> but to someone living on the street or in a car, it may feel like a mansion. >> i love it. i'm ready to move in. >> patricia soares spent the last two years living out of her car. she was one of the first people to apply to live in one of the six tiny homes delivered to the first presbyterian church today. >> this would suit me just find because of the cold, it being very cold at night and not

having the provisions to shower or, you know, use the rest room. >> a $200,000 county grant and donated labor and materials went into the homes. those selected can live here up for up to 18 months while they prepare to lock for permanent housing. they'll have to have jobs because they have to pay rent. >> so it's going to start at $200, and then for four month, and then go to $400, 600, 800. >> she runs the church's homeless assistance programs. she says the church won't profit from the rent. after utilities are covered, what's left over will be put in a savings and returned to the residents to help pay for permanent housing. >> i love this work. i want people to be housed. i want people to have dignity. in where they live and feel proud of who they are. and so i think this is one step in that direction. >> what's worth having is worth waiting for. >> now getting these tiny homes here was just the first step. there is still a lot of work to do. they have to finish the insides. you saw the unfinished version. then they have to pour

foundations on the edge of this parking lot and put the homes over there. they're hoping to have all of that done and ready for occupancy by february 1st. we're told that a lot of people are praying that they're the six selected. dan? >> eric, it's really intriguing, a clever idea. could this be a model for other churches and organizations do you think? >> well, first pres, as they call themselves here, first pres says they have already received inquiries from other churches, including, as you mentioned, the church in livermore where the homes were constructed. they're asking how they can get in on the action. so we expect to hear more of that in the future. live in castro valley. yes, the first presbyterian church of hayward is actually in castro valley, eric thomas, abc7 news. >> thanks, eric. well, housing is an issue around the bay area, and here's a look at what other cities are doing. so let's start with south san jose where an old roller rink on

pedestrian was hit by a police car and taken to the hospital in serious condition at this very same cross street, james avenue and el camino real. in that september incident, the pedestrian was hit by a police unit responding to an armed home invasion about 4:00 a.m. this resident witnessed another close call, also at this intersection. >> i heard it. i was on the bus. i just got off the bus, i heard it, and i came it and helped her out of the car. it's ridiculous. >> police blocked the intersection all morning. the bus was traveling its regular route from daly city bart to palo alto transit center. no word on the condition of the bus driver or if any charges are pending. >> i would say to the district, samtrans, to maybe find a different way to merge into the mainstream traffic. >> in redwood city, kris reyes for abc7 news. >> our wet weather is sticking around. it may be a few days before we can get a dry spell. live doppler 7 shows who is
