>> reporter: kenneth, janai, good morning to both of you. while that vote was delayed until 10:00 a.m. this morning, the senate majority leader is saying when they finally do get those articles of impeachment, there's no chance the president will be removed from office. after more than 14 hours -- >> the committee is in recess. >> reporter: -- the house judiciary committee breaking for the night without a vote on impeachment. it capped off months of investigations, weeks of hearings and two days of bitter partisan debate where democrats argued president trump abused his office to gain an advantage in the 2020 election, and they say he'll do it again. >> this is a constitutional crime spree. >> reporter: as republicans challenge democrats were simply playing politics. >> you've been wanting to do that for a long time. >> reporter: the committee chair abruptly ending the marathon debate postponing the historic vote on the two articles brought against the president. >> i want the members on both sides of the aisle to think about what has happened over these last two days and to

search their consciences before we cast our final vote. >> reporter: as members cleared out, republicans arguing the decision more political theater. >> because they want to get it back on the cameras because it's after 11:00 and they don't think enough people are watching. >> reporter: but ted deutch tweeting, a vote of articles of impeachment is one of the most consequential and historic votes a member will cast. it should only take place in the light of day, not at 11:30 at night. when they reconvene republicans could continue to offer amendments turning it into another long day. if they don't and and suggested last night they were done with amendments, they could hold the vote sending it to the senate where the majority leader says -- >> i doubt it. there's zero chance the president would be removed from office. >> reporter: while the president has said he wants an aggressive defense and that would include live witnesses, top republicans in the senate say they don't want to go that route because it would lengthen the senate trial and we're told now the president is warming up to that idea.

kenneth, janai. >> all right, serena marshall is there in washington. thank you. from the u.s. to the uk, the other big story this morning is across the pond where results are in after the most divisive british election in decades. the results could have global impact with trump favored boris johnson scoring a landslide victory. let's bring in abc's maggie rulli there in london. maggie, what does this election mean for the uk and for the u.s.? >> reporter: well, kenneth like you mentioned, this was a landslide victory for boris johnson and his conservative party, even more so than many people thought possible. now, this election had been seen for quite some time as the brexit election, and after getting elected, johnson said himself this is almost like being given a mandate from the people to go out there and now get brexit done. although, kenneth, we don't really know if people went to vote because they wanted brexit because they were tired of the government talking about brexit or because they simply didn't want the leader of the opposition party but whatever that means, johnson has said this is his go to to get brexit done. now, besides brexit, which the news has already made the pound rise overnight, americans should also pay attention because there are lots of

similarities between the two campaigns that went on. here in britain many people saw thises is a campaign that was run on misinformation. there are also concerns and speculation that there may have been foreign influence at play. we're still waiting to hear the results of that report. but both of those things should seem pretty similar to what we've dealt with in the united states. now many people are looking at this election, comparing it to what we could see in 2020, and it's a very interesting result and, kenneth, for what it's worth, president trump has already congratulated boris johnson overnight as well. so it should be interesting to see if these two will keep working for years to come together. >> yeah, it should be interesting to see and, maggie, we're seeing headlines that boris johnson could end up being the last prime minister of the united kingdom because of what's going on in scotland. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, it's that word united that's really interesting here. the scottish national party also saw a huge surge in power last night. a lot of seats that got elected. now they could ask if they could be the party that separates the united kingdom.

if they could also for scotland remain in the european union. they have to ask for this but when they show the fact that they've gained that many seats, that's a tenet of that party, it's possible, kenneth, it's possible that scotland could leave the united kingdom and stay with the european union but again with all of this only time will tell. >> possible the key word there. maggie rulli in london, thank you. back in this country a brutal murder is sending shock waves through a college campus. a freshman was stabbed near the campus here in new york and no arrests have been reported. questions are now being raised about security as students mourn a shocking loss. this morning, a college campus is on edge after a student's brutal killing. >> we think it's really shaken up the community. >> reporter: people gathered in manhattan overnight to remember barnard college freshman tessa majors. the 18-year-old was stabbed wednesday night in a park just one block from columbia university. >> very heartbroken. like that's it. like i genuinely my thoughts and prayers go out to like her family. >> reporter: police say majors was attacked by one to three

suspects demanding money mortally wounded she managed to stagger up these stair foss a security booth before collapsing. >> it's just shocking and very sad. we lost a member of like our community like this. >> reporter: police found her uncharged cell phone and a knife at the scene. a police dive teamed searched a pond in the park for more evidence. >> the idea that a college freshman at barnard was murdered in cold blood is absolutely not only painful to me as a parent, it's terrifying to think that that could happen anywhere. >> reporter: major' family telling abc news tess shone brightly in this world and our hearts will never be the same. majors had expressed excitement about her future on a podcast before the start of the school year. >> i'm going to barnard in new york city across the street from columbia. it's an all girls school. i'm really excited about that. >> reporter: her killing has raised new questions about security near the school's campus.

columbia university says there is always someone in that security booth near the park. but students have their doubts. >> there should be 24/7 security guard. personally when i go through the park, i almost never see a security guard. >> investigators are looking into whether the murder is related to a recent string of local robberies. police detained several juveniles for questioning in the case but later released them. six bodies have been recovered after that deadly volcanic eruption in new zealand. military units wearing breathing masks combed the island despite the risk of another eruption and the risk of inhaling toxic gas which could be fatal after one breath. a search for two other victims will resume tomorrow. two boys from chicago and their parents are among the victims. time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. a blast of icy snow is blamed for a massive pileup along interstate 35 in minnesota.

the crash involved 20 cars and 6 jackknifed trucks. the interstate was shut down for nearly three hours there. the minnesota state patrol is warning roads across the state are still icy and dangerous. and looking at the national weather map, today's highs will be in the teens and 20s across the upper midwest. warming into the 30s and 40s in the eastern third of the country and mostly 60s and 70s across the south. coming up, the new drink with a new buzz. the soda/coffee combo with double the caffeine. but first the controversy over why the governor of kentucky pardoned a convicted killer before leaving office. and new trouble for facebook. the action the government may soon take against the company.

we're back with an emergency landing on busy interstate 5 near san diego. witnesses say the cessna crashed in the middle of the freeway onto the center divider. the two people on board were not hurt. all lanes of traffic were shut down but have since re-opened. investigators are calling tuesday's deadly shootout in new jersey a potential case of domestic terrorism. the news comes as newly obtained video shows the suspects entering a jewish market in jersey city. the suspects were armed with five guns including an ar-15 style rifle and a shotgun. they killed three people and wounded another. the survivor says he hit the floor when the bullets started flying. >> they came to kill and they didn't came to spare anyone. i had the courage, i had the right mind, i just redirected her arm and ran out of the store. >> as the investigation continues, the fbi is asking the public for help gathering more images from the shootout. detectives think the killers may be connected to a fringe branch

of the black hebrew israelites. but no firm links have been established. new questions are about why former kentucky governor matt bevin pardoned a convicted killer before leaving office this week. bevin defends his pardon of patrick baker who was convicted of killing a man during a home invasion during his wife and children. bevin blames baker's drug use and says the evidence was sketchy. critics raising questions after a local newspaper reported baker's family donated more than $25,000 to bevin's re-election campaign. new antitrust concerns could be a major problem for facebook. the company is working on integrating its various platforms including whatsapp and instagram, but those plans could now be halted by the federal trade commission which is investigating facebook's dominance in the industry. the ftc is now considering an injunction to stop facebook's integration, and that could leave the company more vulnerable to a possible breakup. pepsi's newest offering packs quite a caffeine punch.

now to the firestorm over the new clint eastwood movie "richard jewell." the film is about the 1996 olympics bombing in atlanta. >> but there are questions being raised about the movie's portrayal of a real-life character played by actress olivia wilde and now wilde is responding to the outrage. this morning a battle of truth versus fiction. >> i report the facts. >> you've ruined this man's life. >> reporter: surrounding the new movie "richard jewell," the film directed by clint eastwood is about the centennial olympic park bombing in 1996 with olivia wilde portraying real-life journalist kathy scruggs and her efforts to find the bomber. critics say the movie inaccurately suggests scruggs who died in 2001 traded sex for tips about the investigation. >> the fbi is looking at richard jewell as the bomber. >> reporter: in the movie scruggs sparks a relationship with an fbi agent portrayed by actor jon hamm in an apparent attempt to obtain information about richard jewell who was

once considered a suspect but was later cleared. "the atlanta journal-constitution," the newspaper where scruggs worked, says scruggs is being unfairly depicted and are asking warner brothers to include a disclaimer in the movie. this morning wilde now speaking out tweeting, contrary to a swath of recent headlines i do not believe that kathy traded sex for tips. nothing in my research suggests that she did so and it was never my intention to suggest she had. that would be ang appalling and misogynistic dismissal of the difficult work. eastwood is also defending the research behind the film. >> well, there's only so much research you can do. you can't live inside the people because they no longer exist. she did find the answer to it so how she did it, nobody probably will ever probably really know. >> in a statement warner brothers said the film is based on a wide range of highly credible sourced material. "richard jewell" hits theaters today. more are coming forward to say their ring home security cameras have been hacked. a texas homeowner says a stranger hacked into his camera and demanded a ransom. in other cases, people are reporting strange voices talking

to them in their living rooms and bedrooms often with racist and sexual messages. experts say hackers are taking advantage of people who use the same user name and password on multiple devices. breaking overnight former nba commissioner david stern has undergone emergency surgery after a brain hemorrhage. the 77-year-old fell ill at a new york restaurant. there's no word on his condition. stern led the nba for 30 years transforming the league into a global brand and bringing the pros to the olympics. and to some more uplifting sports news, history was made in the nfl last night. ravens quarterback lamar jackson broke the single season rushing record for a quarterback, a record previously held by michael vick. jackson also threw five touchdowns. he is the favorite to win the mvp award. the ravens also beat the jets, 42-21. >> jackson said, watch this. up next in "the pulse," a big surprise inside a salvation army red kettle. also president trump goes

>> how foggy? >> spooky dooky. >> and it's friday the 13th. so there's fog up in the north bay, san francisco and visibility down to a quarter mile or less. be careful traveling through those areas. some rain santa rosa and north bay northward. the commute for me was much drier than yesterday. temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 50s now. on our way to low -- or upper 50s to low 60s. the chance of rain increases as we head into the afternoon hours. a one-two punch of fog this morning and rain this afternoon. let's talk more about the fog with jobina. >> we have several fog advisories. look at all of that gray and white spreading across the area. first stop, the san mateo bridge. you can see how difficult it is to make out the taillights for

everyone headed towards the peninsula. the golden gate bridge does not have a fog advisory. we have one though for the bay bridge, the antioch bridge, the carquinez bridge, the waldo tunnel, also known as the robin williams tunnel and fog advisory for the dumbarton bridge as well and american canyon. we have breaking news from east san jose. this is brand-new video just into to the abc7 news room. it shows a massive police presence at south white road and florence avenue. a witness at the scene spoke to san jose police and they say this is a homicide investigation. expect roads in the area to be closed for a while. julian glover is on his way to that scene to get more information. we'll have his live report coming up in our next half hour.

this is a moment that has been long in the making. the new larkspur and downtown novato smart stations open this weekend. it will make it so much easier for north bay commuters to get t san francisco. >> it starts tomorrow but the celebration starts today. amy hollyfield is live at the larkspur station with more on that. amy? >> hi, reggie. i'm at the station, you take your train here, you park. and then you just take this foot bridge and walk over to the larkspur ferry for a lovely ride into san francisco. so the hope is that this will connect commuters who live up in sonoma, napa, northern marin county down here to their jobs in san francisco. but smart trains have had money problems. those issues have delayed the opening of this larkspur station. the station was approved by voters 11 years ago in 2008. so this is one of two new stations that will be opening. the other is in downtown novato.
