good morning, america. breaking news as we join you this friday, a surprise move, that expected impeachment vote is delayed overnight, setting up a bitter showdown this morning. overnight, democrats suddenly ending a 14-hour marathon debate in the house before the vote on those articles of impeachment. republicans outraged. >> this was the most bush league thing i have seen forever. >> we're live on capitol hill with the latest. also breaking for our viewers in the west, an arrest just made nt murder of 18-year-old college freshman tessa majors killed in new york city. we're live on the scene this morning. coast-to-coast chaos. snow, ice and rain causing major pileups. six semis smashing into each other, shutting down an interstate.

good morning, america. great to have you with us on this friday morning, and lamar jackson of the ravens, he was excited to break that record last night. >> yeah, you mentioned tom brady. we're not going to tell you any specifics about the challenge other than to give you a clue. it involves rollerblades. all i'm going to say. we've got a lot of news to get to this morning. >> that's some clue. we begin with that drama in washington. house democrats delayed a vote on impeachment after a marathon 14-hour debate, infuriating the republicans. both parties back at it this morning planning for a vote today. the final step before a full house vote on impeachment. terry moran joins us from capitol hill and, terry, pretty clear democrats didn't want to get accused of hiding the vote in the dead of night. >> reporter: they did not and they were concerned that republicans were exploiting delaying tactics to force that vote in the dead of night. it went deep into the night. it was bitter and acrimonious. at times both were covering

themselves in the mud they were hurling at each other so when the vote was postponed, well, that started a fight too. overnight an unexpected and abrupt break in the action. >> i want the members on both sides of the aisle to think about what has happened over the last two days and to search their consciences before we cast the final votes. >> reporter: after 14 hours of heated debate, democrats delayed a historic vote to approve charges against the president and send them to the full house for a vote. >> the committee is in recess. >> mr. chairman. >> so typical. >> this is the kangaroo court we're talking about. >> reporter: republicans were outraged, seemingly blindsided by what they consider a procedural cheap shot. >> this was the most bush league thing i have seen. they want to shine in these cameras, get prettied up and then vote. >> reporter: the decision to delay the vote is a fitting end to a bitter two-day brawl in the house judiciary committee spurred by republicans repeatedly trying to amend the articles of impeachment and weaken the allegations. those efforts were stamped out by democrats. >> it's so obvious that it is a

last-minute, after the fact, desperate scramble to cover up the president's wrongdoing and i tell you what, we're not falling for it. >> reporter: trump's allies in the house are now looking forward to the senate trial where their party is in control. >> the republicans in the senate will call hunter biden. they will call the whistle-blower. and you better wait and see what the american public does when all of the facts are out. >> reporter: but senate majority leader mitch mcconnell laid out his plans to quickly dispose of the impeachment in the new year, confident in the senate outcome. >> there's zero chance the president obviously would be removed from office and i'm hoping we'll have no defections at all. >> reporter: that is what it looks like, rock solid republican support and the that is an achievement of the president. earlier on there was wavering from republicans about the president's dealings with

moment taken along strict party lines and that is an achievement of the president. it has to be considered that way. when this story broke, and the transcript of that phone call between president trump and president zelensky came to light, you saw some republicans up here waver a bit. they called it troubling in public. they said it was not okay, but because of the president's very staunch defense of his own behavior, and the natural partisanship that boils over in this capitol hievery day, that call was perfect. that was the defense line of the president. no more wavering, no more troubled reflection on whether or not we want presidents to do this with foreign leaders. you are watching right now a political accomplishment by president trump in this party line vote, and he's praising them as warriors. >> on the house judiciary committee, the second one being voted on. democrats all voted aye. >> mr. stanson votes aye.

>> miss dean. >> miss escobar. >> aye. >> miss escobar votes aye. >> mr. collins. >> many collins votes no. >> you hear again those republicans voting no. jon karl, as terry moran just said, perhaps a political achievement for the president to hold his party together at least on this vote so far of course, a trial is coming, and so far it appears that he has strong support, if not, unanimous support among senate republicans as well, but this is still a mark he does not want on his record. >> reporter: he goes down in history. this is the beginning of the s process of him going down in history of only the third president to be impeached. johnson, clinton, nixon resigning before it reached this level. this is something the president did not want, a mark or scar on his legacy, but i have to completely agree with terry

moran. this is a victory of sorts for the president in that it is a purely party line vote. it enables the white house to say, this is a partisan process. this is the president's political opponents going into an election year trying to -- to put a stain on his legacy and perhaps on his chances for re-election. although i have to say republicans feel pretty good right now where they are. >> and the second article has now been voted on. >> it is in favor to the house. members will have two days to submit views. the resolution will be a single amendment to a substitute. we are authorized to make technical changes. >> mr. chairman. mr. chairman. pursuant -- >> what purpose does the gentleman seek recognition? >> to rule 11, i give notice to file these interviews. >> with that, the committee issed a journi adjourned. >> the house has now voted out and improved two articles of

impeachment against donald john trump. that is how the final resolution does read. donald john trump has been impeached on those two articles. the only change is changing from donald j. trump, to donald john trump. those are on abuse of power and obstruction of congress. those votes will go to the house floor, and will likely be voted on midweek before christmas, and house speaker nancy pelosi wants to move to a quick vote. president trump wants a quick trial in the senate, and he has agreement from mitch mcconnell as well. we will likely be coming back at the first of the year for that trial of president trump on those two articles of impeachment. the next step is next week. we're going to return now for regular programming. for many of you, that is "good morning america." >> announcer: this hnnouncer: th >> reporter: despite the instability of the volcano, teams are taking to the sky and returned home. the new zealand defense force seen here in their protective gear scouring the mud and ash

covered island. there is a 50 to 60% chance another eruption could happen in the next 24 hours. the next 24 hours and they expanded the no access zone saying that while the tremor has decreased, magma is rising, vigorous steam mud is releasing and gas emissions are increasing. as this small town grieves there is the obvious question about what happens next for the island and tourism. should the volcano be accessible for tourists? >> this is something that questions that need to be asked and in time will be answered but right now our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones. >> reporter: it does seem right now that all of the focus is on those families and helping them find closure. this as many survivors face months of recovery ahead and others are fighting for their lives. 11 of them suffering critical burns and they're in critical condition this morning, cecilia. >> certainly thinking of them still. marcus, thank you.

we're going to turn to the latest now on that deadly attack and shootout in new jersey. the fbi is considering it a domestic terror case and turning to the public now for help in this investigation. adrienne bankert is in jersey city with the very latest. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you, too, cecilia. yes, an act of domestic terror and a hate crime according to officials. we have some newly obtained video, getting a clearer picture of the moment these two suspects approach the front of this boarded up kosher market. now that video shows they began firing almost immediately on the store and anyone inside. the attorney general says that they've recovered about five weapons from the scene. in addition to that pipe bomb found inside the stolen van that they had actually outfitted with ballistic panels as weapons included an ar-15 style rifle and a shotgun, and we also see on surveillance video the sole survivor of these killings

running in panic from the store. the suspects shooting at him as he was able to flee, and he told me he came face to face with one of those shooters, pushing their arm away, redirecting the gun for a moment, and then able to run as fast as he could out of that store. he says the jewish community just wants to see the store re-open and they appreciate the community's help. the fbi asking for the public's help now with any photos, any video, any information including a vehicle that could be registered in david anderson's name that would help them in this investigation. george. >> okay, adrienne, thanks very much. we move to that message from taylor swift overnight, blasting what she calls toxic male privilege. she won billboard's woman of the decade award. janai norman with the story. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning, guys. george, you know, taylor swift is having a really good year, and ending on a high note taking home another big honor, and again, taking aim at the men she feels have wronged her. accepting billboard's woman of the decade award overnight taylor swift taking aim at the men she says she's faced down over the last ten years of her meteoric rise to fame.

breached passwords and user names from other incidents totally unrelated and then checking to see if users of ring accounts have reused passwords on multiple services. >> reporter: meanwhile ring responding with a statement saying, quote, we have no evidence of an unauthorized intrusion or compromise of ring's systems or network. unfortunately, when the same user name and password is reused on multiple services it's possible for bad actors to gain access to many accounts. >> companies are really concerned about too much friction, just too much effort to set up the device. they're worried that if it's too hard, someone just won't do it. >> reporter: experts say to combat this problem customers should practice good password hygiene and enable two-factor authentication to keep bad actors away but also say this is just the beginning of a larger issue with the internet of things, everything being connected makes everyone vulnerable, guys. >> okay, so disturbing. will, thank you. our tech correspondent becky worley joins us now from san francisco. a lot of questions on this one,

becky. so disturbing what we just saw. how are people getting hacked? do we have a sense? >> as will said and the company told him, they told me, they have not been breached. they think these are isolated incidences where a hacker gained access to an individual ring owner's user name and password. let's say he used the same user name and pass point of order -- password for every log-on. you bought something from a site that ends up getting hacked, criminals can see if it works on other sites and have access to every one of your account. >> what can we do? >> the basics, tart by your wi-fi. it needs to be password protected. you want to turn on auto updates for iot, internet of things, apps so they have the latest security all done on your phone in the settings and make sure your account has a strong password. caps, lowercase, numbers, but it's not just having a strong password, you have to have a unique password for sensitive

victims to get some sort of relief that truth is put out there. >> there's a bomb. >> reporter: the current editor for "the atlanta journal-constitution" where scruggs worked called the journalist an aggressive reporter, adding, it's ironic that a film purporting to hole the media to account disregards such crucial facts. scruggs reportedly struggled with substance abuse and passed away in 2001. for his part, eastwood is defending the film. >> i read all the material i could find on her and they all seem to corroborate the fact that she was somewhat on the wild side. >> reporter: overnight scruggs' brother said his sister was not a saint but says she would never do anything to compromise the ethics and standards of the profession she loved. olivia wilde also has a tweet where she calls the story a fictional dramatization and says as i understood it, kathy and the fbi agent who leaked information to her were in a pre-existing relationship, not a transactional exchange of sex for information.

it's quite a story. it was back in the '90s when the backstreet boys and 'nsync were put together by lou pearlman. there was sweet harmony on stage but discord behind the scenes as the guys topped the pop charts but weren't getting paid. turned out there was a lot going on that nobody knew about other people's money and the manager they called big papa. he was the man behind some of the biggest boy bands ever, including two of the biggest juggernauts of all time. backstreet boys. ♪ backstreet's back all right >> reporter: and 'nsync. ♪ every little thing i do ♪ never seems enough for you >> reporter: the strangest part of the whole boy band world is that the two huge boy bands were created by this great big dude from queens who made his money from blimps. >> reporter: in the early '90s lou pearlman was running a blimp business when he decided to wade into the boy band business after seeing the hottest act of the time, new kids on the block.

♪ step by step >> i was invited to come down to one of the shows. all this screaming. i was like, my god, what is going on here and these girls in these t-shirts and hats and chains and posters. it's like, man, this is exciting. not to mention there is a tinkle to the cash register. no question about it. unbelievable. >> reporter: with a keen eye for casting he launched backstreet boys and later 'nsync. both groups skyrocketing into the pop music stratosphere. the money started rolling in for perlman, but for the bands, something didn't add up. >> i was in the biggest band in the world and selling millions of records and someone's making millions and millions but i can't even afford my apartment in orlando. i couldn't even get a car. >> reporter: backstreet is out there bringing in millions and millions of dollars and then they find out that lou has taking 10 million for himself and left 300,000 for them to split amongst themselves. they said they began to feel

like indentured servants. >> reporter: they all wound up in highly publicized legal battles. when we wanted to renegotiate it was just a hard no. that's when lou changed from jolly lou to here's business lou. lou sued us for our name. he was the sixth member of the group and he owned the name 'nsync so he took our name so we could never use it. that's why we ended up in court. >> reporter: it wasn't just music where he was raking in the cash. at the same time perlman was luring investors into what he claimed was an empire under a brand he called trans continental. >> trans continental companies is a conglomerate. what we have is trans continental airlines, trans continental foods, trance continental entertainment. >> reporter: but roger hanburg says it was all part of a big fraud. >> trans con was a con all the way through. they had no airplanes, no employees, no revenues, had no contracts with airlines. >> reporter: in the documentary

first breaking news for our viewers in the west. the house judiciary committee finally voting on articles of impeachment against president trump after that delay overnight. terry moran is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: that's right, george, a historic moment, articles of impeachment voted against donald john trump as he's described in those articles. he becomes only the fourth president in the united states history to have this moment when the judiciary committee votes articles of impeachment to the house floor. andrew johnson, richard nixon who resigned before a house vote and bill clinton of course the previous presidents, but on a strict party line vote. that has to be counted as a political achievement for donald trump. when the story broke, when the transcript of that phone call between president trump and the president of ukraine came out, there were republicans who wavered for a while. they said it was not okay, wondered about its appropriateness. they held their fire and now they are absolutely staunch in his defense and on his preferred

line of defense, that that call, in the president's word, was perfect, that there was nothing wrong with it and the process that represents another witch hunt. there's no question this comes as a blow to the pride of president trump. he has called the word impeachment disgusting and he doesn't want to go down in history as the fourth president to have impeachment hung around his neck. so his aim going forward is not just to defeat it on another party line vote in the senate but to blib rate its memory, disgrace those who brought this against him, to use the trial in the senate to put his accusers on trial. george. >> thanks very much. another important headline to tell you about, a new way to help families in crisis. the fcc has now approved 988 as a nationwide number for the national suicide prevention and mental health hotline. dr. jennifer ashton is here to tell us more about this. good morning to you. i know that is something you have spoken very openly about

how suicide has impacted your own family. what do you think this will mean? >> i think this is historic for us as a country in mental health. it really represents a massive culture change, culture shift in recognizing that there are millions of people in this country who have mental health emergencies. now, there are challenges ahead. we don't know fully how it will be executed and operationalized yet. there will be wait times, rollover, regional centers. it is not operational yet. that might take over a year. but, again, this is a huge step and really brings this issue to the forefront. >> we always have to talk about how to help when we talk about an issue like this. if someone is resistant, what do we do? >> i think it's important for everyone to know that right now there are 700 crisis lines operationally in this country and those lines are not just for people struggling themselves. if you know someone is struggling and you don't know how to help them and you think it is that critical, use those lines. reassure that person they are not alone. they do not have to suffer in pain by themselves.

this person who is just trying to do his job and trying to help. >> trying to help. >> and sort of castigated for that pure motive. >> speaking of perfect casting kathy bates, she plays the real -- plays bobbi jewell nominated for a golden globe for her portrayal in the movie but she was here earlier in the week and said filming in atlanta, you are the mayor of atlanta. so can you explain that? >> well, i've shot a lot of movies in atlanta so i've spent a lot of time in atlanta and i love atlanta, by the way, and by the way, the film is in many ways like a celebration of atlanta. but i know a lot of places to go. i know a lot of restaurants. anybody want to hit me up if you're in atlanta, it's -- there are a lot of great places to go but it's a remarkable town. it's a beautiful place. not only to film but to live.

roo the tinety rescue chihuahua was skeletal and scared of everything when adopted and had to be fed six types a day but now her human says she's the most soulful energetic dog she's ever had. stella the shepherd survived a hurricane in puerto rico before finding her new family. her humans didn't think they were ready to adopt until they saw that cute little face. their youngest daughter has autism and stella has become their de facto therapy dog. the family says stella has been a weird, crazy, fantastic thing that's happened to them.
