>> reporter: in san francisco neighborhood, dozens traded unwanted guns for cash. $100 for handguns, $200 for assault weapons. >> there's no questions asked. you don't have to say where you got the weapon or if you have any more left. we just want to get the guns we can off the street. >> reporter: partnered with the sfpd on the buyback. 317 turned in including 93 rifles, 75 revolvers and even a few antique pistols. >> i'm surprised but only says they wish to be wishing to save lives as opposed to being promotors of taking liveles. >> reporter: gilroy hosted it, the first in 25 years. >> people were running from the festival right by our front yard. >> reporter: last summer, shooting at the garlic festival prompted his son-in-law to turn in 15 guns. >> he and his wife wanted to

make sure these got off the streets. everybody's been strongly influenced by what happened at the gilroy garlic festival. >> reporter: we just learned gilroy's buyback collected almost 500 guns today. live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> cornell, before you get away, what's going to happen to those guns? >> reporter: yeah, eric, police say all the guns will be destroyed and in some cases, some of the gun metal donated to public art projects promoting anti-violence and peace. >> all right, cornell barnard reporting for us live in san francisco. in the meantime, in salano county, vallejo held their third annual gun buy back at the solano fairgrounds. assault weapons turned in, nearly a third more than last year. partnered with police on the event. the non-profit was started by a mother who lost her son to gun violence in vallejo in 2014.

memorial declaration to honor his contributions to the health care community. first african-american to hold the ceo position at a major hospital chain. a law about alligators of all things has led to california being sued by louisiana. a law banning the import and sale of all gator product is set to take effect in january. louisiana's lawsuit claims it will hurt not only the state's economy but the wetlands alligators depend upon. they've had a ban on alligator skins and meat for decades but exceptions recently issued. the exceptions this time will be allowed to expire. you've probably seen them if you've been in a major airport. super a business to help her classmates, what she's selling to make sure they don't miss out on lunch. whales are some of the largest animals on the planet

this might sound familiar. a diet can affect size but this time we're talking about whales. scientists looked at hundreds of whales including blue whales to figure out why some aren't bigger. body size is controlled by calories, yes, how the whales capture prey and how much food is available. they noted whales that captured one prey at a time could increase in size but become less efficient at hunting. the number of calories they consumed, which is why they don't get bigger. >> whale the largest animals that ever lived on earth. . in the south bay, a week of giving in the holiday spirit. >> 300 volunteers with sacred heart community service that put together food boxes today. they'll hand out the boxes later next week to 3500 families. each box filled with fresh fruit, veggies, rice, oil, eggs and bread. families get to pick whether or not they want to take home a turkey, ham or chicken.
