england patriots videotaping scandal. the punishment reportedly handed down. seven years to the day after the deadly shooting at their school, the newtown, connecticut, high school football team wins the national championship and their big appearance on national tv last night. the gift that keeps on giving, the holiday fruitcake that's been around for nearly 150 years. good monday morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm kenneth moton. >> i'm darla miles in for janai. we begin with a messy morning commute. 25 million americans are under winter weather alerts. looking at the radar, a massive storm is bringing snow, ice and rain from missouri to the east coast. and in the south new concern about possible tornadoes as this storm expands. this morning, a mixed bag of winter weather from missouri to maine.

a massive stormg trekking across the country making holiday shopping treacherous and forcing businesses to close early with just over a week before christmas. in ohio overnight, large flakes started flying at this mall near columbus as rain fell just to the south. according to the national weather service, all of the state's 52 counties should see snow, sleet and rain. it's expected to be a rough monday morning commute in major american cities like pittsburgh, philadelphia and baltimore. the slow-moving storm has already closed highways in three stays and already blamed for at least four deaths. abc's rob marciano says other big concerns are possible tornadoes in the south and significant icing in new england. >> so let's time this out. there is a severe weather component to this in the south, louisiana, mississippi, alabama could see some tornadoes and then by tuesday morning we're still looking at an icing situation north of i-80 and north of i-95. could see three to six inches of snow but i'm worried about

friesen rain through hartford and state college. kansas, the pregame warm-up between the chiefs and broncos included a snowball fight and then snow angels after the touchdowns. >> time for more snow angels. >> we'll take a closer look at your forecast in less than five minutes. now to the other big story this morning, the looming impeachment of president trump just days away. democrats looking ahead to the trial in the senate hoping to hear from at least four key witnesses including former national security adviser john bolton. meanwhile, one democrat in congress who opposes impeachment is now expected to jump ship and become a republican. abc's ines de la cuetara has the new details from washington. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and darla. as the impeachment process in the house wraps up, lawmakers are now turning their focus to the impending senate trial debating the terms for what will likely become the next partisan battleground. with the full house set to vote this week to impeach president trump, lawmakers in the senate

are looking ahead to an all but certain senate trial. in a letter senate minority leader chuck schumer outlining his party's offer for a fair, bipartisan process pushing for testimony from white house officials who have direct knowledge of what happened in ukraine. mick mulvaney, john bolton, michael duffey and robert blair who all refused to participate in the house investigation. >> i have clearly made up my mind. i'm not trying to hide the fact that i have disdain for the accusations and the process so i don't need any witnesses. >> reporter: democrats slamming republicans for saying they are in total coordination with the white house and arguing senators are supposed to render impartial justice. >> i hope that the senators will insist on getting the documents, on hearing from the witnesses, on making up their own mind. >> reporter: meanwhile a group of freshmen house democrats are encouraging house speaker nancy pelosi to appoint independent congressman justin amash as an impeachment manager

to help argue the democrats' case in the senate hoping the libertarian will appeal to a broader portion of the public. as for president trump, he's venting about impeachment on twitter calling pelosi crazy and writing, her teeth were falling out of her mouth during a press conference. the house vote is expected to be held on wednesday. impeachment is expected to pass along party lines but not all democrats are on board. there are some lawmakers who are running for re-election in trump districts who find themselves in a tricky position, and you have at least one of them, congressman jeff van drew from new jersey, speaking out against impeachment and even considering switching parties and that caused five of his staffers to resign. >> definitely a lot of politics at play. ines, thank you. the military has launched an investigation into hand gestures at the stands at saturday's army/navy football game in philadelphia. at least four students from west point and the naval academy were spotted making hand signs that could be associated with white power.

it happened on live tv during a pretaped interview on espn. the naval academy says based on the findings of the investigation, those involved will be held accountable. we turn to the murder of that college student here in new york. hundreds of people attended a vigil last night for tessa majors who was allegedly stabbed by a group of boys, and now we're learning more about the moments before her death. [ crowd chanting "no more" ] >> reporter: hundreds coming together in morningside park to remember tessa majors, gathering on the same steps where she was attacked. >> new york should have been a place to learn and grow and instead it became the place where her life was stolen away from us. >> reporter: these mothers all lost children to violence. they live in the neighborhood rocked by this tragedy. >> we understand the grief and we were here just to show the support. >> we came out to support tessa. >> reporter: police say majors was walking in the park early wednesday evening when she was confronted, robbed and stabbed. authorities say she managed to stagger up the steep staircase but later died at the hospital.

>> this area has always felt safe to me, and i'm absolutely outraged, and i just want to send a message of peace, love and light to the family. >> reporter: over the weekend police questioned a 14-year-old in connection with the murder releasing him without charges. another teenager is in custody. a 13-year-old charged with felony murder. the juvenile's name has not been released. investigators say that teen did not kill majors but participated in the deadly robbery and he implicated two other teens in the crime in his statements to police. >> we really don't know the full story until we identify and arrest the two other individuals and even then we may not find out. >> reporter: majors loved music. she played bass guitar and sang in her band called patient zero. the owner of a music shop the college freshman frequented in her hometown of charlottesville, virginia, organized a tribute to majors on sunday. >> when you saw her you knew that's what she was meant to be doing. she was a great performer. >> reporter: this morning the new york police department union

president is sharing new details about the investigation. >> what i'm understanding is she was in the park to buy marijuana, and you think about that, we don't enforce marijuana laws anymore. we're basically hands off on the enforcement of marijuana, so here we have a student murdered by a 13-year-old, and we have a common denominator of marijuana. you know, my question to the people of new york city is, why is this happening? >> and it's important to note the nypd has not said why majors was in that park. new york mayor bill de blasio called the claim that she was buying marijuana heartless and said it's an example of victim shaming. turning back to the weather, let's take a closer look at your monday morning forecast. >> good morning. we're tracking a complicated winter storm across the mid-atlantic as we head into our monday, perhaps a tricky morning commute with snow and ice to places just north of d.c. working into pennsylvania.

another swath of snow across southern illinois into central indiana where we had several inches of snow already yesterday. south of that, perhaps severe storms into the mississippi river valley. but on the wintry side of things, ice a big threat across the alleghenies of pennsylvania into southern new england where we could see up to a quarter of an inch of ice. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. coming up, the big scare outside a national park when a bear climbs onto a car. but first allegations of sexism against a presidential candidate, former new york mayor michael bloomberg. later the new england patriots videotaping

to hitch a ride on a car. it happened on a road heading to kings canyon national park east of fresno, california. the car was stopped in traffic. the driver edged forward. the bear slid off. no one was hurt. now on to a desperate search under way in texas for a mother who vanished with her 2-week-old baby. 33-year-old heidi broussard and her infant daughter were last seen thursday. she dropped off her son at school in austin but never came back to pick him up. police believe broussard and her baby returned home before they went missing and now her fiance is pleading for her safe return. >> she would never disappear. she is an amazing mom. she would never -- we have a 6-year-old son named silas, beautiful kid. she would never leave him. i just want her home safe. it doesn't have to be here. just drop her off somewhere safe. >> shane carey says nothing was missing from their home, and there were no signs of a struggle. presidential candidate michael bloomberg is being forced to deal with allegations

that he made lewd and sexist comments in the past. among the accusations, a female employee claimed in a lawsuit that bloomberg told her to kill it in response to her pregnancy announcement. bloomberg denied that allegation. his campaign says bloomberg now realizes some of what he has said is disrespectful and wrong. at least 17 women have taken legal action against his company. three named him specifically. none of the cases made it to trial. three remain active. at the movies now, "frozen ii" is the icing on disney's cake this year. the movie just skated past the $1 billion mark worldwide making it disney's sixth movie this year to hit that milestone. that's six movies. the others were "avengers: endgame," "aladdin," "toy story 4," "the lion king" and "captain marvel," and no other studio in history has ever had five billion dollar hits. >> ooh, 5 billion. well, coming up, a major jewelry heist near kensington palace in london. also, breaking news overnight, a big reversal by the

the best christmas ever. >> reporter: after the hallmark channel pulled this ad featuring a same-same sex couple kissing on their wedding day. >> we do. >> reporter: a conservative group called one million moms took issue with the campaign and more than 40,000 signed the petition saying the ad didn't align with the network's family friendly content. it prompted social media backlash when they pulled the ad. ellen degeneres tweeting isn't it almost 2020? what are you thinking? and presidential candidate mayor pete buttigieg saying, being family friendly means honoring love, not censuring difference. the company behind the ad, zola, a popular wedding service, telling abc news it had an agreement with hallmark to air six commercials including this one. >> do you think zola could have made planning your perfect wedding easier? >> reporter: initially hallmark's parent company stood by their decision saying in a statement, the ads were distracting from the purpose of our network which is to provide entertainment value, but this morning they've changed their mind and will reinstate the commercial. hallmark's ceo mike perry saying

public relations stunt on the eve of his criminal trial provides even more motivation to continue to prosecute the claims that will expose him for who he is. in sports the new england patriots producer responsible for the controversial video of the cincinnati bengals' sideline has reportedly been suspended. he says the video was intended only for a documentary, not for the football staff. fox sports aired some of the footage sunday. the league is expected to penalize the patriots for recording the video. the buffalo bills are heading to the playoffs after beating the steelers, 17-10 last night. this is the first time the bills have won ten games in a season since 1999. a stunning upset sunday, the falcons beat the 49ers. replay confirmed. this catch by julio jones with two seconds left was a touchdown. that means san francisco drops down to the wild card position in the playoff race. up next in "the pulse," the oldest fruitcake in america.
