37 years ago this friday. two 16 year-old cousins from fremont were kild. the case went cold until now. the family has answer thanks to detectives and dna testing. >> they would have been 53 years old today. they were both killed in 1982. their killer has been identified. >> mary jane met up with her cousin as he was ending his shift. they walked along north able street and stopped at this store to buy food. they continued to walk northbound that's where they were last seen. 250 hours of advanced testing done at two labs. led them to suspect who was 31 years old at the time.

a disabled former employee of a fiberglass company. >> they didn't know each other. at all. based on family and friends there's no connection with the suspect and victims. maybe that's why a case goes cold. >> jeffreys body was discovered around 6:00 a.m. at the intersection. about two and a half hours later police got another call a body found near this intersection. at the type of the crime this area was very rural. no witnesses saw or heard anything. >> this is where her body has been discovered. she had sexually assaulted. suspect lived nearby his body was exhumed to obtain dna samples. he died in 1999. that means the families will never see a trial or conviction. >> they're going through grief. after 37 years they're readdressing the hurt and pain.

the san francisco bureau chief for the "new york times." you spent three months documenting the lives of people in homeless camp in oakland. thanksz for coming in. you can compare the camps to war zone third world nation type conditions. and i think the universal question especially you work for a national publication. how in one of the most expensive places to live where there's so much money in the community, how can this not be fixed? >> it doesn't compute. that's what we were thinking when we went into it. we want to see the paths people travel. traveled down to get into this homeless encampment. this is near the home depot. in the fruit vail on the edge of the district. and so we just spent a lot of hours talking with residents about 100 people in the camp.

it's been around five years. it's a sort of community. they're desperate conditions. there's no running water. there's no sewage. there's no proper cooking facility. people are living in conditions that do resemble a refugee camp. when i spoke with someone they said at a camp you might have more rights and more facilities. there are requirements. >> before we went on you told me you have covered these stories internationally. for 20 years. and in your story you note how when you compare the conditions in oakland to the slums in mexico, conditions are more favorable in mexico. which is almost mind boggling. >> so we traveled down to mexico city for the story. we went to an emp campment that the un visited and had they came to oakland and visited

the camp. and went to mexico city. you're right, the in mexico city there's more legal flexibility. if i can put it that way. people stole electricity. but they had electricity. they piped in water. they built very makeshift toilets. but at the end of the day they had a living arrangement that was quite functional. and as opposed to oakland where these camps are temporary and no one wants to make them permanent. therefore there are very old trailers that people live in. where really they're leaking trailers and in tents. it gets muddy. they're terrible conditions. >> one of the quotes that jumped out at me, homeless people are treated worse than stray animals. when someone finds a stray they take it home and feed it.

they call the police on a homeless person. >> it's true. it's really sad. >> it is. the framing of a refugee camp really came to me when i was talking with people about how they got to the camp. and some of the them came from the paradise fire for instance. some of them came from lake county where homes burned down. a woman came from houston. from her house was flooded in the hurricane. you really get the sense that the people have fallen. no one was there to catch them. and now they're in this community of last resort. >> you were telling me the story about somalia in this camp. and one point was serving celebrities. and is now sort of stuck. >> that was a separate story. he lived in a camp nearby. and i just ran into him one day walking around the camp.

and as you say he was serving the finest wines at the finest restaurant in the bay area. and to find him in a tent in this encampment, it was really alarming to see how far someone could fall. >> did he have a plan for how to get out? >> he actually did have some possibilities for temporary housing. and he's the last time i spoke with him he has taken the steps. there was hope for him. in the encampment that we looked at near the home depot, there are children living there. there was a girl who went to school every day. she slept in this terrible conditions. and went to her elementary school. there was a family of three generations living there. including small bib babies. it's affecting when you see that. >> do you get the sense people are resigned to this is where
