we are looking at a crash also in san jose, two cars involved here. this is northbound7 before curtner avenue. one car is facing the wrong direction there right now. today marks the start of a trial involving a fastrak tolling system. >> thousands of drivers say the system messed up when trying to bill them. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the golden gate bridge with those details. >> good morning. have you been unfairly personalized or charged for crossing this bridge. some drivers say they didn't get their invoices for the toll, mostly because of address mistakes, and instead of trying to find them, fastrak just kept fining them. >> they just shredded the return mail and imposed penalties on these motorists for failing to pay the tolls.

>> the golden gate bridge switched to all electronic toll taking in 2013. the next year a quarter mile million drivers got toll evasion penalties. fastrak said they have made improvements but will not release details onhose improvements so drivers can't gain the system. the trial will get started today. reporting live from the golden gate bridge, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. in just about 30 minutes, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell will address the impeachment of president trump. this morning there's no new timetable for the case moving forward. house speaker nancy pelosi declined to say when democrats will deliver the articles of impeachment to the senate. she says they're concerned about an unfair trial. last night's house vote on impeachment fell along party lines. mcconnell is expected to meet

with chuck schumer later today to figure out the terms of the senate trial. we have details on what's involved in the impeachment process on our website, abc7news.com. a san francisco couple is talking about a scary uber ride. they say the driver refused to let them out of the car. the couple says alaska airlines ordered them an uber from sfo to oakland airport on december 8th. that's because their flight had been diverted due to bad weather. the airline apparently entered a generic oakland destination in the uber app instead of the airport's address, and that apparently confused the driver. >> started yelling at us and said we were trying to trick him and that we were stealing from him. he peeled out, and hopped on to the entrance ramp of the highway. >> the couple called 911 and they got the driver to stop.

uber says that driver has now been fired. we did more than a dozen store rifs about ridesharing, the drivers, the cars, the rules during our rideshare realities week. you can read more on abc7news.com. look for thesection. happening today, orinda city council will vote on a ban on temporary rentals. this after a shooting on halloween that left five people dead. if approved, property owners would be required to be on the property during the rental term. movie magic is coming back to treasure island. a 70,000 square foot space called hangar three has been cruised as a production space is production stopped in 2010. thanks to a new lease, it's making a comeback. this time the space will be called film treasure island. the first shoot is scheduled for february.

a tracy man could spend up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to sabotage. abdul aloni worked as an american airlines mechanic. yesterday he admitted to disabling a plane's navigation system because he wanted overtime pay to fix it. the flight in july was headed from miami to the bahamas. alani will be sensed in march. in the south bay, a special graduation surprise for one san

jose student. the university made sure a touching message of support made it more than 5,000 miles. it was from her boyfriend, an air force lieutenant serving in japan. >> i'm sorry i couldn't be there to experience this with your family but know i love you, i miss you and i can't wait to see you soon. congratulations, jianna. >> she looked surprised and touched. that is salinas and her family. they were moved to tears. salinas is a first generation college student. as you guessed by now, she's a professional motorcycle drag racer. building a better bay area means finding solutions to keep people from moving away. two career counselors in san mateo launched a program called stay in the bay, 100k. about 50 representatives from various trades, public safety agencies, transit systems and

companies went to the event that shows there are untilled jobs available that pay $100,000 or more. career advisers came up with the event and shared success stories like a 2016 graduate of san mateo high. >> he started working with caltrain. moved his way up and now he's an engineer and he's making over $100,000. >> that's just after three years? >> i believe so. >> okay. because of the huge success of the program, they hope to make this an annual event. a special santa will hit the streets of oakland to hand out gifts to little children. this is part of motor santa, this gets under way at the east mont substation. a police officer dresses up as jolly old st. nick and rides throughout oakland giving out toys. this will be the 13th annual event. santa will be out there until all the toys are gone. >> that's cool. >> that's fun. >> that's a good surprise. riding down the street. here's santa. >> santa going to face some wet roads? >> you know, that's part of the

and then into your sunday morning, it's kind of messy out there. it lingers. some showers into your monday. we have the potential winter storm watch, then warning in the mountains through early next week. as for today, we're looking at temperatures cooler in the north bay with more cloud cover, the possibility of a few sprinkles, mid 50s. upper 50s in the east bay, the south bay, to near 60 in the accuweather seven-day forecast. milder tomorrow, still the cloud cover. a level 2 on our storm impact scale late on saturday into sunday. showers wind down. they'll still be with us monday into christmas eve. it looks like a chance into christmas day. >> good morning. i do have a good update for mass transit situations. you saw we have a lot of problems earlier. the ferries, you can still expect some possible delays due to the fog. the b.a.r.t. delays have lifted. we have 50 trains running on time now. line 181 for the vta, possible delays there. these are still the big issues

good morning to you. starting out with 40s and 50s, some fog there it a few light showers and drizzle. getting into about 10:00, 11:00, still a lot of cloud cover. numbers are somewhat mild. upper 50s to near 60. maybe a few peeks of sun. as we look at the accumulated precip from the weekend into christmas eve, things are turning wet again. anywhere from a half inch to more than that in southern california. this is through christmas eve. >> all right. thanks. the trump administration is ready to allow americans to safely and legally purchase low-cost prescription drugs from canada. under a proposal by the fda, patients can get access to

medicines that follow u.s. safety regulations. political pressure has been growing on the cost of prescription drugs. presidential candidate bernie sanders recently took supporters to a canadian pharmacy where they purchased insulin at about one-tenth of the price it is in the u.s. the trump administration hopes to roll out the program by the 2020 election. one of the dogs stolen last week in fremont has been found. fremont police posted the good news and also some video on twitter of this dog named unique. she was sold to someone but will be returned to her owner. unique was one of more than two dozen dogs in the transportation van that got stolen in fremont last monday. the van was recovered in oakland with 24 dogs inside. one of those dogs, this one, is still missing. this is 3-month-old english bulldog, there's a reward for his safe return. the newest movie in the "star wars" franchise will hit theaters tonight.

the visibility, 2 to 4 miles. well to the north. five to six miles in the east bay. three miles half moon bay. we are looking at that chance of light showers, and then mostly cloudy skies. the clouds thinging outhinning s to 60 today. then we get a weather change with a strong storm system setting up for the weekend. >> we have a bit of an update on this crash we've been following throughout the morning. a car went into a creek on clayton road in san jose. i understand abc7 news reporter julian glover just made it out to the scene there. julian, can you tell us what is happening there right now? >> this is an active rescue situation, i'm told this driver could be coming out of this any moment now. this driver some 100 feet down this embankment after swerving off clayton road and you can see

the massive presence of fire department officials and also from the police department. they are working to get this driver out of here. 25 firefighters and 15 police officers and workers from county ambulance trying to pull this driver to safety. they were about two hours into this tense rescue on a very steep hillside. again, trying to pull this driver up. you can see the ropes beginning to move right now. that being a good sign. i was told a couple minutes ago that any moment now they could be bringing this driver up. i think this is what we might be able to bring to you here on live tv. they've been at this since 4:30 this morning. i'm told the driver was able to free himself from the car, but obviously wasn't able to make it further than that.

he couldn't make it further to safety because of how steep the hillside is off clayton. as to what caused the driver to go off the road and down the emba embankment, that's what we're trying to figure out. live right now, a tense rescue effort unfolding now. i was hoping to bring you the good news that they officially brought that driver out of this embankment, but it looks like it could be a few more minutes until that is able to happen. if we can bring you that live, we will here on abc7 news. i'm julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. some intense moments there. an update on a story we've been following all morning long, a car crashed into a pay day loan shop in san jose, a 15-year-old passenger was hurt and taken to the hospital. police say the driver ran off the road. this started at 1:00 a.m., as the officer tried to pull over

eternal mark of shame. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi casting new uncertainty into the process when she declined to say when or if democrats will deliver the articles of impeachment to the senate citing concerns about an unfair trial. democrats want to call witnesses during the trial, majority leader mitch mcconnell already rejected that request. >> we'll make a decision as a group as we always have as we go along. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell and chuck schumer are meeting today to discuss the terms of that impending senate trial. the trial is scheduled to begin on the week of january 6th, but that's if house speaker nancy pelosi decides to move the process forward. senate republicans indicate they want to hold this trial as soon as possible. mitch mcconnell expected to announce an exact date as soon

starting out with patchy drizzle out there and some fog. visibility has been reduced from 3 to 4 miles from the coast to santa rosa. 5 to 6 miles in our inland east bay. and temperatures are in the 40s to near 50 in pleasanton. 50 in livermore. as we look at the north bay, upper 50s here. 4 in s 47 in san carlos. the roadways are slick out there. there's fog and a small craft advisory throughout the afternoon. looking at a few wet spots as you head towards mass transit. on the peninsula, temperatures in the 50s. they should thin out for partly sunny skies. overall, not ruling out a chance of a shower here in the north bay. cooler number there's in the cloud cover. we're looking at sun tonight. 40s and 50s with the fog. another drive day on the way for

good morning to you. santa rosa, concord, some fog. 40-minute delays at sfo. a look at highs today across the state. sunshine in the southland, but up to the north, rain through chico and a few scattered showers are around sacramento. can't rule out an isolated shower in the north bay, near santa rosa. maybe some drizzle. we are looking at the system to really provide not much in the way of shower activity across the bay. clouds will thin out across the day. enjoying a two-day break before things change. more wet weather arriving for the latter half of your saturday. happening today, putting fast track on trial. thousands of drivers say the system messed up when trying to bill them for crossing the golden gate bridge. amy hollyfield is live at the golden gate bridge with more. amy? >> there's an interesting side

story going on in the courtroom. fastrak was worried that drives would cheat the system so they were arguing the public shouldn't be allowed in the courtroom. the just denied that request but did say information about how fastrak handles tolls and penalties will be kept out of the courtroom, so there will be some secrecy in the case. attorneys in the case against fastrak say they are surprised the agency is so suspicious of the public. >> i think it's troubling that the tolling agencies have this view of california motorists that the motorists are out to get them. >> a group of drivers is suing fastrak saying fastrak wrongly charged thousands of motorists with toll evasions and penalties. the suit says that fastrak didn't try to find the drivers but simply piled on the

penalties when they sent them a fine and it didn't get paid. that trial gets under way today. reporting live in the golden gate bridge, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. a federal appeals court ruled part of the affordable care act is unconstitutional, but this is a limited victory for the trump administration. the law, which requires everyone to have health insurance will remain in effect while the case goes to a federal district judge for more proceedings. a final ruling may not come until late next year. san francisco-based uber has agreed to pay more than $4 million to settle a federal sexual harassment investigation. uber's ceo pledged to change the culture. a live look at the new york stock exchange now. you can see that we're up about 58 points. amazon is revamping its return system just in case santa left you the wrong gift under the tree. the company will now let you

police are asking for your help to identify a robber. investigators say this man robbed an employee at gun point sunday night at the fast mart gas station on east 5th street, grabbing the money from the cash register. before he left, the man used pepper spray on the score clerk. police say he left the scene in a newer white jeep cherokee. anyone with information is asked to contact the police department. a navigation center focused on young people could be going up in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. the proposed spot is near the corner of post and hyde streets in the old house of fans building. this would be the ninth navigation center in the city. it would have 75 beds for homeless young people between the ages of 18nd 24. supervisor aaron peskin said a deal on opening the center is on the verge of being signed. coming up next, 7 things to know before you go. >> before we go to break, here's a live look outside at 6:51 as the sun is struggling to make it past the clouds.
