tragedy on the playground. coming up an investigation into a young boy's death here at this san rafael school. the democratic debates wrapped up here in los angeles. some of the ihad lights coming up. there's a shortage at food banks throughout the area. how you can new at 11:00 a terrible tragedy at a north bay elementary school. a young boy died on an accident on the playground. this incident so distressing even first responders are being given counseling. it happened this afternoon abc 7 news reporter kate larson there live with what happened. kate? >> reporter: of course this is absolutely devastating and our hearts go out to the family and entire school community here. we don't know many details officially about the accident other than it happened on the yard and students and faculty

witnessed what happened. on thursday around 1:00 in the afternoon a young student died after she was injured on the playground at mark day school. an independent k through 8 school in san rafael. in a statement the head of the school said members of our staff witnessed the accident, immediately called 911 and did their best to at minister care to the student. he was transported to kaiser hospital right around the corner from the school. unfortunately he didn't survive. a retired firefighter was at the school for an unrelated event and heard about what happened. >> it was a difficult call and it's tough for the parents and everybody involved and the first responders for them too. >> reporter: the school said they're working with authorities to investigate and that the section of the campus where the accident occurred will be completely closed off. their statement also says the death of someone so young is devastating for all of us and even more so under these circumstances and at this time of year when we are surrounded

building a better bay area takes on a special significance, of course, during the holidays. local food banks are in desperate need of your help. they're facing multi-million dollar shortages going into the new year even in a booming economy as abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez reports time it quickly running out. >> it looks like it's only about three to four weeks of food we have on hand at any time. >> reporter: the alameda county food bank feeds 1 in 5 county residents. >> this year the gap we have to make up is substantially higher. >> reporter: that gap is meeting their fund-raising goal for the end of the year, and they're not the only ones falling behind. the alameda county food bank is short by 2 1/2 million dollars. second harvest food bank serves san mateo and santa clara counties are short by $11 million. and sf marin food bank is short

by $2 million. >> for the last few years it's felt that our fund-raising hasn't been as brisk as it has been in previous years. >> donations to wildfire victims has slowed usual donations to food banks, but he's hopeful they can catch up. two thirds of the food bank's annual budget is raised during the months of november and december. >> that's why we're really trying to get the word out if people are intending to donate, we hope they can do it sooner rather than later so we can bear how we're heading into the new year. >> links to specific food bank can be found on new details about pg&e's power shutoffs. they will continue for at least the next five years. this news came as they okayed rate hikes. it will rise 31 cents for people who receive both gas and

a mile there in santa rosa and napa half a mile. that's where the thickest fog is tonight. temperatures in the 40s, 50s. it was a milder afternoon than we had expected and live picture from our east bay hills camera. as we look across the bay visibility is good from this vantage point. next storm arrives late saturday, and winter begins saturday at 8:19 p.m., so that storm will be bringing some snow to the sierra and few 50s around san francisco, oakland. watch out for the heavy fog, concentrated in the north bay but we will see some patches out towards the inland east bay, towards the delta, so definitely some visibility concerns for the early commute. for the afternoon you're going to see temperatures that range from the 50s, 60s, and little more sun from the coast to the south bay and a little less sun in the south where we see cloud
