[applause] did someone call you and say, fun fact, you've made history? how did you learn this? >> it was quite similar to that. >> we know of so many other

broadway performance that have been parents and children working but we didn't know anyoe that identity together so i was actually very surprised that we were the first mother and daughter leading on broadway. >> tamron: how does it feel this to make this type of history, especially broadway history? >> it's thrilling. >> tamron: you got great jean jeans. >> it's incredibly exciting, to be of mother-daughter duo especially a black mother-daughter duo to be making this history, i think the first people to do it and also black women is important. >> tamron: celia made her professional debut, knowing it for so while i feel loneliness watching over - -- lioness watching over her cub on her first solo hunt." lioness watching over her cub on

her first solo hunt. q lion king. >> this business is fantastic, we love it, we are very fortunate to both have careers in this business but i also know of the pitfalls, the ups and downs, the stress, this curtain is asian happens and as a mom, you know how you feel about yout car up if you have to. to. to. >> tamron: or something else you want to do, are you sure? change topics. i will let her answer that question. >> so for the longest time i wanted to be a child psychologist because i am very fascinated with the idea of empathy and how empathy at an early age is incredibly important, so that's what i wanted to do and then i started

following musical theater and things started to move towards a back burner and my mom being the protective, incredible mother she has wanted me to do something stable and this business isn't always as stable as one would wanted to be. >> tamron: it is not, let me tell you. >> she did grow up backstage, though. >> tamron: do you remember being backstage and seeing and hearing your mother perform? >> the majority of my childhood memories take place and green rooms. i would hear people, "why are they screaming at my mother." >> tamron: i was talking to will be cold there, she was staying with her daughter it was always a struggle to make sure people didn't push her child out of the way, juggling being a famous mom with a daughter, you are also sharing your love with your fans and there is a balan balance. the broadway at family that loves you is getting there.

>> basically being a working mom mom, it was very important to me took time out to the mommy and children time, i have two daughters and even if i had would make spaghetti at breakfast time so they would have a home cooked meal when it came time for dinner. >> my mom is a superhero. i say that all the time. i don't know how. she raised two daughters on her own and two cats, two wonderful cats. and she was present as often as she could be. she was more present in me and my sister's life and a lot of parents who do not work as hard as she was. >> tamron: your mom won out tony for "the color purple" and

you didn't know what i tony was. she was just mom to you. >> she will always be mom. she will always be a cool, awesome, awesomely famous mom. >> tamron: with a tony. >> and anatomy. >> tamron: don't let them forget that. when you watch the celia perform, "jagged little pill", i don't even have a ticket, that's how hot it is. you want your child perform in this musical, do you give her feedback? there's always a balance of tough love. remember they said, michael jordan used to beat his sons at pickup basketball game so h because he wanted them to know that you have two work hard to be michael jordan. >> she calls me a sniper mom. not a helicopter mom, a sniper mom. >> far away.

back in a corner. >> someone starts to mess with my daughter, take them right out. i try to talk to her about vocal preparation, warming up, i just introduced her to a local therapist, there is something called vocal therapy which i am a huge supporter of and i sent her to my doctor and and a provides vocal therapy so i try to work with her on that but to be clear, she definitely has her own performer. i like to think because i've been in the business forever and i know what to do, she has to follow my own way but she's definitely carving out her own way. >> tamron: you said you would support "jagged little pill" even if you weren't in it because of the message of empowerment. >> for my character, telling her own story and figuring out her own life it's so important to see black women take control of their lives on stage and not

sort of just upon in the chess game for a person who is not black. it's about time we are telling our own stories for the sake of our stories to be heard so i would support this no matter what because it is so important to see people who look like me and have hair like mine and speak the way i do to be centers of a story, not just because they are black but they happen to be the center and happen to be black and happen to be queer and to be socially aware and politically correct. >> tamron: i love all of this wokeness and i love it because you still live at home. i mean, that is spectacular. independent, strong, listen, mom, this is what were doing, it's 2019, 2020. mom, is there anything in the refrigerator? where is dinner? >> the other one is "hey, can you tell me how to fix this on

my instagram? >> tamron: about two months ago, we gave five up-and-coming fashion designers a chance to dress me for the show in their collections they make at home, in their offices, it was amazing and one of the big things we did was we got a chance to hang out with andre leon talley, he went to lunch with them, mentor to them and give them advice for one of our designers, denzel parris, made me this dress that everyone loved and he's been making money move and he's here to tell us what's been going on. joining us from the studio in miami, florida, please welcome back to the show denzel parris! okay, denzel. what's been the reaction since you've been on the show? >> well, first, thank you again because since that day life has changed completely.

between balancing working full time and getting the brand off the ground, being connected with an icon like andre leon talley has been life-changing. the little time i was in new york, right after we found i was walking down the street and people were literally coming up to me like "didn't i just see you? you were a guy with the turtleneck come you to the white dress." well i'm having lunch. so it's just been great, it's been great. >> tamron: with all the designers, you were doing this in many cases part-time because you still have to pay her bills and do your other job while you're doing this. the impact andre's advice -- what did it have on you in the sense that it helped you go to the next level or think in a new direction? >> absolutely. what i liked the most about it is's advice was it wasn't generic, it wasn't typical just "chase your dreams and keep going." although that's important. it was very realistic, what to

expect, this is not going to be an overnight story about at the same time it was very uplifting, very validating as well especially to get that coming from an icon like andre, someone who i grew up reading his articles, looking at his documentaries and to be sitting down having dinner with him and him telling me, you could be next, that was beyond reassuring and validating considering every thing i went there to get here. >> tamron: absolutely. in the spirit of what we did with that, the hamilton play "i'm not giving away my shot." andre made some calls because he knows everybody and as i understand there was a call made that helped you with a big opportunity, what is it? >> so i have been -- i just came back from beverly hills, my first time over there. andre reached out to a good friend of his end and a renowned shopping center and he was hosting a release party for

leslie odom jr., one of the leads in "hamilton." he said, "why don't over and host a trunk show?" coming from sketching in my dorm room and coming to beverly hills and seeing people in the store window, people of caliber trying to fight it on, fighting over jackets, that was -- amazing would be an understatement. the whole situation has just been beautiful. [applause] >> tamron: well, we could not be more proud of you and happy for you. i hope you did not sell my white scuba dress, i'm still waiting on it. >> i still love to say thank you again for that. >> tamron: thank you, thank you, we are proud of you.

"the wall street journal" reporting that some third-party sellers on amazon may be selling actual garbage. >> just about anyone can create a storefront on amazon. >> reporter: why are amazon users being fooled into buying trash? according to the "wall street journal," buyers believe if it

comes in an amazon box or has an amazon label, it is in fact sold by amazon. but that isn't the case. many third-party sellers send their items to fulfillment centers across the country to then be sent by the online retail giant. rachel johnson greer, a former manager of an amazon fulfillment center, knows the ins and outs and says it's not hard to be fooled. >> anything that was inside the fulfillment centers would get the prime badge, because it could be delivered at that speed. people started equating the prime badge with amazon. >> reporter: there are millions of brand-new items sold on amazon, but there are some labeled new that are secondhand. the "journal" put the idea to the test. >> we retrieved items from store dumpsters, created an amazon storefront, listed those items on amazon. >> reporter: the "wall street journal" purchased their own items before anyone else could. according to heather hoops, not everyone sells trash. >> oh, this is a good one, 50% off. >> buy a toy after christmas for $5, flip it online for $20. >> amazon, essentially a flea

market for online shopping. you don't necessarily know where the items are coming from. >> reporter: in response to the "wall street journal" report, amazon updated their policy to ban selling items from the trash and closed the "journal's" third-party store for violations of their seller policies and seller code of conduct. amazon telling abc news, sellers are responsible for meeting amazon's high bar for product quality. there are isolated incidents that do not reflect the high-quality customer experience provided by the millions of small businesses selling in our store every day. we will take appropriate action against the bad actors involved, including possible legal action. rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> wow. so you can literally get anything on amazon, but it might

be trash. so things that you can do, take a look at the product page, if it says "only available from a third-party seller," that means it may not be from amazon. >> that is true. so many people are getting stuff from amazon, these are important things. college, and more. >> elizabeth warren and pete buttigieg had the biggest clash, going head to head over campaign finance after warren talked about his ritzy fund-raiser in a wine cave. abc's elena gomez joins us with more highlights from los angeles. >> reporter: good morning, janai and kenneth. the president's impeachment was expected to be a hot topic at the debate and it was, it started the show. but candidates wasted no time getting back to their campaign messages. the last democratic primary debate of the year began as expected. reacting to president trump's impeachment coming just one day before. >> if the president claims that he is so innocent, then why doesn't he have all the president's men testify? >> reporter: but candidates quickly returning to those hot-button issues they're hearing on the campaign trail like the economy. >> where i live, folks aren't measuring the economy by how the dow jones is looking, they're measuring the economy by how they're doing. >> we've got a government that works great for those with money and doesn't work for much of anyone else. >> reporter: climate change.

>> the issue now is whether we save the planet for our children and our grandchildren. >> reporter: and america's role on the world stage. >> we see among our allies and among our adversaries, case after case, where the world is making plans on what to do, ignoring the united states, because we're no longer considered reliable. >> reporter: and for democrats, thursday night was also about diversity. seven candidates representing two women -- >> senator warren, you would be the oldest president ever inaugurated. >> i'd also be the youngest woman ever inaugurated. >> reporter: and only one candidate of color, andrew yang. >> why am i the lone candidate of color on this stage? you know what you need to donate to political campaigns? disposable income. >> reporter: all in agreement their primary target remains the man currently occupying the oval office. only seven of the 15 candidates qualified for the debate. now several candidates are putting pressure on the dnc to modify their restrictions for future debates. janai, kenneth? >> elena, that last question of the debate seemed to catch everyone off guard. >> reporter: yeah, it had a

bunch of laughs for people in the audience and the candidates. the question was, if you had the choice to give a gift or ask forgiveness for one of the candidates, which would you do? andrew yang was the first to answer that, he laughed and joked he would give his books to all the candidates. warren said she would ask for forgiveness, sometimes she can get heated, but that's because of the all the people's stories that she hears. >> all right, elena, not a question you hear at a normal debate, but i guess right before the holidays it makes sense. elena gomez live from los angeles, thank you. now to the standoff over the senate impeachment trial with democrats and republicans clashing over the timeline. >> after becoming only the third u.s. president to be impeached, president trump is slamming the process as a hoax and is looking to the senate for vindication. >> house speaker nancy pelosi is throwing a bit of a wrench in their plans with an unexpected holdup. abc's mary bruce has more. >> reporter: in the oval office, president trump tried to shrug off the new historic mark on his

legacy. >> i don't feel like i'm being impeached because it's a hoax. it's a setup. it's a horrible thing they did. >> reporter: on capitol hill, house speaker nancy pelosi is riding high. >> seems like people have a spring in their step because the president was held accountable for his reckless behavior. i myself want to say, i have a spring in my step because of the moral courage of our caucus. >> reporter: but pelosi's not ready to take the next step. she's refusing to send the articles of impeachment to the senate until republican leader mitch mcconnell reveals what the trial will look like. mcconnell has said he's working in total coordination with the white house. >> our founders when they wrote the constitution, they suspected that there could be a rogue president. i don't think they suspected that we could have a rogue president and rogue leader in the senate at the same time.

>> reporter: democrats pushing for the delay hope it will give them leverage as they demand to hear from top trump aides the white house has blocked from testifying. including acting chief of staff mick mulvaney and former national security adviser john bolton. put the president and his allies insist the speaker is simply scared of a trial. >> looks like the prosecutors are getting cold feet. in front of the entire country. and second-guessing whether they even want to go to trial. >> reporter: mcconnell has made clear he wants a quick trial and no witnesses. republicans now accusing pelosi of playing games. >> frankly, i don't care what the republicans say. >> reporter: leaders mitch mcconnell and chuck schumer have been huddling, trying to come up with the next steps, but nothing's come of it. democrats are still demanding those witnesses, republicans aren't budging, and leader mcconnell has declared they're at an impasse. and mcconnell says the speaker wants to prevent a trial here in the senate quote fine with me. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> our thanks to mary bruce on capitol hill. russian president vladimir putin is coming to president trump's defense saying he was impeached for far-fetched reasons.

>> putin echoed republican talking points during his end the year news conference calling the charges against trump groundless. he claims democrats are trying to make up for losing the 2016 election and accused them of inventing something after failing to prove collusion with russia. a day after its impeachment vote the house has passed a new north american trade deal. it's called the usmca, united states mexico canada agreement. the deal had bipartisan support, passing by a vote of 385-41. the umca replaces the old nafta deal which many lawmakers blamed for shipping jobs to mexico. it's expected to be considered by the senate next year. severe weather and the scary scene on a kansas highway. the semi truck you see there slid and jackknifed to the side of the road in near whiteout conditions. it happened earlier this week but authorities say it's a reminder of the dangers of

police are trying to catch thieves stealing holiday packages at homes across the country. >> abc's matt gutman went behind the scenes of a sting operation targeting these porch pirates in california. >> reporter: they are the brazen thieves that strike in broad daylight and in the dead of night. and the holidays aren't just peak season for stores, but also for those grinches, grabbing holiday cheer right off your doorstep. so across the country, police departments are cracking down on porch pirates. the anaheim police department has just launched a program of sting operations to lure thieves by planting gps trackers in packages. >> what do you intend on putting inside this box? >> we are putting in two brand-new iphones. >> reporter: worth nearly $1,000. the phones and the tracker go into that backpack. and that lithium ion sticker makes it even more enticing. we're told porch pirates aren't that picky. >> most of the time these

package thieves are going random door stop to door stop taking packages, they don't even know what they're taking. >> reporter: there's the bait. as soon as this package moves a couple of feet it's going to trigger an alarm that will go off at dispatch. the dispatchers are going to let officers know this thing's on the move. >> if it's a guy going 2 miles an hour, we can inference he's walking. if it's going 40 highs, we know to look for a car. >> reporter: their operation seems to be working. this police body camera footage shows anaheim officers booking suspects who had no idea the package they were suspected of swiping led police to their exact location. but programs like these across the country rely on another tool, doorbell surveillance cameras. now ring systems like the ones owned by adrian jenkins are leading to arrests. >> we share the ring video on the neighborhood app, and the police actually caught the guys. >> reporter: there are a number of things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of porch piracy.

the airlines expecting to move 47.5 million americans over the next couple of weeks for the winter holiday season. this is where the crunch will be felt at the tsa checkpoints. tsa expecting a 4% increase nearly over last year, and they're going to do what they did during thanksgiving, the busiest travel season we've had so far this year. that's bring in more officers and also officers on overtime to try to handle these lines. during thanksgiving the tsa was very proud the waits were 30 minutes or less. the very busy days are friday and saturday. friday could set a record all-time high for the winter travel season. then we have a lull and it picks up again next thursday and friday as folks either try to go home or go someplace for new year's eve. the good news so far, no catastrophic storms are in the long-range forecast as the airlines get ready to move 47.5 million of us. david kerley, abc news, dulles international airport. >> david said 47.5 million. >> he said it twice so you know. >> even tsa precheck behind him there was busy. >> precheck during the holidays can be tough. jfk the day after thanksgiving was real good, so hopefully the

and the others also chimed in. >> we need to restore the integrity of the presidency, of the office of the presidency. >> if the president claims that he is so innocent, then why doesn't he have all the president's men testify? >> first we should obviously be paying to relocate -- >> businessman andrew yang got the least speaking time but he urged his party to focus on the jobs issue that got trump elected. >> the candidates touched on a range of issues outlining their differences when it comes to the economy, climate change, and foreign policy. >> where i live, folks aren't measuring the economy by how the dow jones is looking, measuring the economy by how they're doing. >> we've got a government that works great for those with money and doesn't work for much of anyone else. >> the issue now is whether we save the planet for our children and our grandchildren. >> why am i the lone candidate of color on this stage? you know what you need to donate to political campaigns? disposable income. >> the candidates butted heads in the second half of the

debate, most notably over money and politics. >> joe biden was not targeted this time but pete buttigieg came under fire after his rise in the polls in iowa just seven weeks before the first vote. to break it all down we turn to abc news political director rick klein. rick, good morning. >> reporter: janai and kenneth, a new front-runner getting new scrutiny. mayor pete buttigieg the story of this debate. sustained scrutiny on his record. from three different united states senators taking on his relative lack of experience, as well as his perceived coziness to well-heeled democratic financiers and billionaires. this will be a key moment to see how mayor pete responds to the first time that he is getting serious questions about his record, clearly registering as a front-runner. joe biden less of a story in this debate although he was able to talk about his ability to work with republicans and trying to cast his vision of leadership as something the democratic party needs at this moment. of course donald trump overshadowing all in this debate. several candidates responding, reacting to the news of

impeachment, and they know that donald trump is going to consume much of the next month of this campaign by virtue of that looming senate impeachment trial. three of the candidates on stage in this debate are going to have to serve as jurors in the coming weeks. janai and kenneth? >> all right, rick, thank you. on twitter, president trump has been railing against his impeachment, that he's labeled as a hoax and a setup. >> the timing of the upcoming senate trial is uncertain after house speaker nancy pelosi said she'll hold off on sending articles of impeachment to the senate until she knows what the trial will look like. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said they're at an impasse after meeting with democratic leader chuck schumer. the senate has given final approval to a bill designed to curb those very annoying robocalls. thank goodness. it's called the t.r.a.c.e.d. act

and it requires phone companies to authenticate calls to determine if a number calling is actually real. it also clears the way for regulators to penalize scammers more aggressively. estimates are nearly 50 billion robocalls have been made in the u.s. so far this year. there's word of a massive facebook user data breach. a security expert reports the names, facebook i.d.s, and phone numbers of nearly 270 million users were exposed in an online database. he says most of the people affected are from the u.s. the database is no longer up and running but it was available for about two weeks. facebook says it is looking into the matter. a georgia family got a little something extra with its christmas tree. >> katy mcbride newman says her 10-year-old daughter complained last week that one of the tree's ornaments scared her. upon closer inspection that ornament turned out to be an owl. >> oh my god. >> mom said she realized it was the real thing when the bird turned and looked at her. they think the owl was in the tree when they bought it. >> obviously the bird didn't fly into their house, did it? could you imagine that poor girl saw it and the owl was turning its head staring at her. >> mom, mom, the owl! that's just your imagination, go to bed.
