the bay area led to a close call for a family in the north bay. good evening, i'm dan ashley. a bolt of lightning this morning splintered a 100-foot tall tree in mill valley at water view drive and lcd court. some neighbors say it sounded like a bomb going off. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez is here with a story you'll see only on 7. lauren. >> dan, the strike split the tree in two and would fall on the home below. they evacuated the family making for a very unusual christmas morning. >> it was like a bomb went off. it was right behind the house. >> reporter: residents of water view drive in mill valley were woken up just after 4:00 christmas morn when a strong force of lightning split this redwood tree. >> it exploded into shards where it sent part of the tree on top of our house, on top of our car, on top of the power pole. >> reporter: the fire department evacuated the lobos family for three hours. they live just below. >> they thought the tree was going to hit the house, so we

had to pull all our animals out and leave. >> reporter: by night fall, crews cut what was left of the tree down into pieces. we met yohannes rockland who lives next door. >> i know the force of the blast knocked pictures off our mantle. that's just from the force of the lightning and the, you know, lightning bolt. it was really dramatic. >> reporter: it may have made for a dramatic christmas morning, but luckily no one was hurt. >> you know, santa was a little loud this morning, but that's okay. everybody was safe and everything could be repaired. so it was a christmas mira k. >> reporter: in mill valley, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> a recent heavy rains may have caused a tree collapse that killed a man in muir woods. a portion of hillside trail in muir woods national monument closed from debris that fell and killed a man. five trees fell like dominos 4:30 in the afternoon. another person was hurt.

the national park service is investigating. all right. well, let's hear more about this morning's thunderstorm and the rain that's ahead from abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma. drew? >> yeah, dan, it was certainly a loud start to our christmas morning. this is 4:30 a.m., earlier this morning on live doppler 7. you can see 13 lightning strikes as the thunderstorm moved through, even dropped some hail on 101 early this morning. now things have certainly quieted down. we have mainly dry skies. the one exception live doppler 7 in the santa cruz mountains, even on mount hamilton has light precip and snow flakes falling. the storm is exiting now. we'll go hour by hour with what to expect in the full forecast, dan. >> thank you very much, drew. an 82-year-old great grandmother is asking for your help after her bag filled with gifts and cash was stolen from the amtrak train she was riding from sacramento to fremont. abc7 news reporter unser hassan spoke with the victim skmaz her story, one you'll see only on

abc7 news. >> reporter: 82-year-old marcia is happy to be spending time with her great grand kids. but this isn't the start to the holidays she was hoping for. >> it's very frightening. i will tell you, at 82, the first thing you think is you're having alzheimer's. >> reporter: she says her bag filled with gifts and cash was stolen from the luggage rack on her amtrak train to fremont. >> i don't think it was an accident. i really doubt it because it's big. it wasn't small. you don't take something that n big big by accident. >> reporter: she started looking for her bag 5 minutes after arriving at the station but it was gone. they weren't able to do much on the train. she plays clarinet in an orchestra in miami, and that was stolen. >> we have a book full of piano songs she can play with her clarinet. it's like someone took that from us. you know what i mean?

that's not cool. >> reporter: but bubby as they call her says she's trying to keep the holiday spirit. >> i've had five back surgeries, rods and screws and all that stuff, so i'm lucky that i'm okay. i'm here. and i'm safe. and i got to see the children. >> reporter: and she says that's what the holidays are all about. in fremont, unser hassan, abc7 news. >> new details tonight on a shooting that left a 6-year-old boy critically injured. it happened last night christmas eve in vallejo as the child was outside on ohio and mariposa streets. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow spoke with neighbors who crawled to their bathroom while bullets pierced their home from the outside. >> reporter: kendra black and her fiancee glenn simonas say this is the last christmas they'll spend here. they're moving after bullets enter their vallejo home from outside christmas eve. >> everyone was screaming, get down, get down. >> reporter: one bullet in the direct path of kendra's dad got lodged in the wall. >> it went through and hit him.

the second one hit through here, broke through the curtain rod and exited through -- over there. >> reporter: did you think you were going to die? >> i honestly thought so because the bullet flew through our faces about this far in front of me and my brother's face. >> reporter: later they learned a 6-year-old was shot in the torso. when vallejo police arrived, the 6-year-old victim was already gone taken to a local hospital perhaps by a family member in a private vehicle he. >> i'm praying this boy makes it. >> reporter: so are neighbors. >> i really feel bad about that because he's 6 years old, you know. 6 years old, he had nothing to do with this thing. >> reporter: police gathered evidence like bullets through cars and even the bullet that went all the way through the home where black, fiancee and her family were celebrating christmas eve. >> we just feel extremely blessed right now. >> reporter: a memorable christmas, far from what they had imagined this season. in vallejo, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> four people were shot tonight

during a holiday party at a home on 34th avenue near foothill boulevard in oakland. police say three men and a woman were wounded. one seriously. police are not releasing any further details at this moment. new developments tonight, the man accused in the stabbing death of clayton beathard, the younger brother of 49ers quarterback c.j. beathard has been arrested. nashville police say 23-year-old michael mosely surrendered at a vacant home after it was surrounded by police. he fatally stabbed clayton beathard and another man outside a nashville bar. a vacant home in oakland where a group of homeless mothers are fighting to stay put, against the property owner's wishes, the group, moms for housing say they moved in the magnolia street home with their children last month to draw attention to the bay area homeless crisis. we've been reporting on this extensively. they will be in alameda county court tomorrow to challenge an

eviction order they were given. the real estate firm wedge wood owns the property and says it plans to sell the house to a first-time home buyer. well, a lot of people head off for christmas and we certainly hope you enjoyed christmas with your family. our first responders, health care workers and so many others are still clocked in and doing their jobs. abc7 news reporter julian glover doing his job has the story now from the south bay. >> mobile, getting ready to go for my walk here. >> reporter: a hospital room is the last place anyone wants to be on christmas day. but 79-year-old charlie toast is making do. >> got my exercise in, got my food, got cleaned up, got on television, what more could a guy want? >> reporter: the former airline pilot is used to being away for home, but he's in the hospital for treatment for stage 4 cancer. instead of being down, charlie is choosing an attitude of

gratitude. thankful for the workers at the hospital to keep him comfortable. >> they sacrifice a lot working here. it's hard enough day by day, but on holidays, probably especially hard. >> here at washington hospital, somebody has to take care of the patients. i'm willing to do it. it makes you feel good to help other people. >> reporter: you don't have to look hard to find other guys working hard. dispatched to move this car that was wrerked when a drunk driver crashed into it early christmas morning. daisy garcia is thankful someone finally answered her calls. >> fortunately they're working today on a holiday, and thanks to them now we have our problem situated. >> reporter: it's a big sacrifice, everyone else is home with family. not you. >> sacrifice is good. >> reporter: people all around the bay area are grateful for those sacrifices. in san jose, julian glover, abc7 news. >> merry christmas. golden state warriors. >> coming up, a holiday gift

the warriors are celebrating a much needed win tonight, and the team continued its christmas game tradition by hosting a group of children. abc7 news anchor eric thomas is at the chase center. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: between the star-spangled banner and tip-off, a special group of 30 young people received christmas gifts from the golden state warriors and houston rockets players on the floor of the chase center.

it was one of the best days of jordan ledbetter's life. >> amazing. you get to be on the court. i, i, i haven't been on the court. >> reporter: the kids were from the oakland public education fund and the boys and girls club of san francisco. after their court appearance, they were ushered into another room to open gifts. each child received warriors clothing and a set of beats headphones. warriors vice-president melanie moore organized the event. >> personally, i love bringing young people out to the game. >> reporter: and to top things off, the kids got to watch the warriors beat the houston rockets, and to celebrate their favorite players. >> i would say probably curry, u but -- if you're talking about right now, i would say deangelo russell. >> reporter: jordan is also a warriors fan but he patterns his name game after the rocket who gave him a gift. james harden? >> of course. >> reporter: of of course. this is the first time they held the event at the chase center. they say there will be more.

at the chase center in san francisco, eric thomas, abc7 news. >> that's a great night there. well, glide memorial church in san francisco held its annual christmas celebration this morning. breakfast was served followed by a lunch of turkey, ham and all the trimmings. glide expected about 2800 people to eat with them today. >> usually about 300 volunteers to serve these meals to our homeless population. not just homeless populaton, but for anyone who needs a meal, for, you know, residents in the area. make ends meet. >> the church serves 2000 meals every day. glide says january and february are usually the slowest months for volunteers so they invite anyone to sign up. well, some people spent christmas morning preparing 4,000 meals at the salvation army in san francisco. the meals were then delivered to people who otherwise can't leave their homes and likely don't have visitors. volunteers say it was worth the early morning christmas wake up call. >> we're very blessed and it's great to give back to the

community. examine people need it, you know? it puts a smile on their face. it's wonderful. >> isn't that great? the salvation army is worried about funding its programs next year. they hope people will keep the nonprofit in mind when considering their end-of-year donations. well, not everyone stays at home to eat a traditional christmas day feast. check out saul's restaurant and delicatessen in berkeley. it was bustling with customers all day. like many other eateries open across the bay area this holiday. some do it to avoid cooking and cleaning up. others have made going out kind of a holiday family tradition. >> and that's what it's all about, right? any holiday, truly it's about family and traditions. >> i was very glood this was hope because there's not a lot of options. >> the deli was so busy, she and her husband waited an hour to be seated. the couple say they wanted to celebrate hanukkah with some jewish food and their best friends. a nice evening indeed and to earn who worked tonight, we appreciate it. well, the ring of fire was

not visible to north america this christmas, but you are in luck. here's video of today's annual solar eclipse as seen from the united arab emirates. some great video. it started about 6:30 p.m. here on the west coast time. the full eclipse when the moon covers the son's center took place about an hour later creating as you can see the so-called ring of fire. the next solar eclipse visible to most of north america is june 21st of next year, about six months from now. great video. all right, on to the weather forecast and meteorologist drew tuma is here to look at the weekend coming up. drew? >> we were dealing with a lot of cloud cover, dan, because of our storm. that is now moving out. tomorrow it will be a much brighter day. live doppler 7 showing you the sweep across the region, still dealing with some showers in the santa cruz mountains and even some mixed precip, some winfrey flakes falling around mount hamilton. woke up to snow on mount hamilton todays. as the storm exits, another dusting there as well. windy out there now, breezy, 22 mile per hour winds in san

francisco, 11 in sonoma, 21 in san mateo. overnight the winds are going to relax and as they do it will allow temperatures to cool off into the 30s in our coldest spots. already cold now, 49 in oakland, same in the city, 50 in san jose, 46 in santa rosa and concord currently checking with a temperature of 49 degrees. here's live doppler 7 along with satellite. you see the storm nicely spinning into southern california right now. we're just on the northern fringe of this storm, and that's why we have showers in the santa cruz mountains. those will move out over the next couple of hours. but before it does, it continues to keep us on the rough surf along our coast. a beach hazard statement, rather, still in effect until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. the risk of rip currents and sneaker waves, it is running high thanks to our active ocean currents. let's time-out the rest of the rain. early tomorrow morning, 2:00 in the morning that rain is diving down to the south. and tomorrow morning we'll start out with sunshine in the north bay. little bit of cloud cover in the south bay. we will all see sunshine into the afternoon.

overnight tonight temperatures dropping into the 30s in our coldest spots like the north bay and inland east bay. some patchy fog very likely as well in the north bay. elsewhere around the bay shoreline holding the low to mid 40s. so the day tomorrow, break it down for you, first thing in the morning you'll see a little bit of cloud cover in the south bay, but that cloud cover gets out of here midday. the afternoon a ton of sunshine out there, beautiful day, temperatures in the mid 50s. so highs on your thursday 55 in the city, same in oakland, about 56 in san jose. 57 in santa rosa, 55 in concord. if you're traveling tomorrow, no worries. going to tahoe or portland where we run into issues is i-5 south to l.a. i-5 over the grapevine, it is closed because of heavy snow and there is no estimation when that will open. so you will have issues if you try to go to southern california tomorrow there. 580 looking great here. traveling in the central valley, green, good to go. plan the next 7 days for you. clouds and sun tomorrow. sunny skies on your friday. dry on saturday. start off the weekend, there is
