northwest facing beaches are the most dangerous. the beach hazard warning is in effect until 9:00 tonight. it's been extended 12 hours. if you go out to the beach, keep your eyes on your pets and do not turn your back on those waves. we've seen some of them crash up to ten feet so far this morning. and we're going to have pretty big waves as the swells are up to 13 feet. be careful there. let's talk about what live doppler 7 is seeing, the possibility ofsprinkles from the san mateo bridge down to a lighter rain in the santa cruz mountains. we're seeing a turnout in the northwest. that means we're getting further away from the area of low pressure. the likelihood of these showers hanging around is starting to lose its start. maybe another hour or so if we look down here, 280 at 17, a shower over there by live doppler 7, it looks dry as does 87. the breezes, we have them out there this morning. those drops, 43 to 47. notice the sunshine and the

10:00 last night on northbound foothill road just north of castle wood drive. abc7 news reporter julian glover has arrived at the scene. julian, what else can you tell us? >> a heartbreaking story here and an awful update to bring you. we know the three people killed in that crash shortly after 10:00 on christmas night were all teens. two of the victims are said to be brothers. we want to give you a look at what's left behind right here. pg&e crews currently on the scene because they are cutting back a lot of trees and working to right a power pole taken out in this crash. at 10:00 p.m. last night, right off of foothill road, just by the castlewood country club. we know that there were five occupants in the vehicle, all of them teens. two of them were ejected from the car and we're hearing remarkably that the two who survived were the two that were thrown from the car.

an awful update to bring you here. three young teens, all under the age of 18, were killed on christmas night. two of them said to be brothers. chp working to confirm whether speed may have been a factor. they say this is just a dark, winded edy country road and thel be investigating as to what caused this crash. some sad news to bring here on the day after christmas. we'll continue to bring you updates as we get them. we're hearing from chp this road here is expected to be closed until 4:00 p.m. as they work to repair all of the damaged power lines behind me. reporting live here in pleasanton this morning. julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. a huge traffic headache for holiday travelers trying to drive over the grapevine to get home. here's a live look at interstate 5 from the caltrans camera. both directions of the grapevine are shut down now due to heavy snow. multiple vehicles are stuck waiting on the freeway. crews were working to assist

has pled not guilty. a preliminary hearing to determine whether there's enough evidence for a trial has been postponed until march. the newman police k-9 association posted this video on its instagram account. it shows the police department delivering corporal singh's son his own patrol car for christmas. singh told his son he would grow up to be a police officer and he would teach him. it was delivered yesterday morning to get his training started early. a group of mothers occupying a vacant home in oakland will go to court to challenge an eviction order. the group, moms for housing, moved into the home with their children last month to draw attention to the bay area homeless crisis. a judge ordered them to leave but he's giving them a chance to make their case for staying. the real estate firm wedgewood says it wants to sell the home to a first time home buyer. the warning for travelers passing through busy airports. and how to clean up trash and help the environment in the

five american airports may have seen travelers with measles pass through this holiday season, and that includes l.a.x., denver international, and two terminals inside chicago's o'hare airport. health officials say all the people involved tested positive for measles. this has been the worst year for measles in the u.s. in more than two decades. in the east bay, health officials are asking people to be aware of deadly mushrooms cropping up after the recent rains. they're most common in parks at the base of oak trees. the mushrooms can cause liver and kidney damage and even death. petaluma firefighters made a brave rescue. they freed a dog from a burning home and these photos show firefighters giving the dog oxygen with a fido mask, it is specifically made to fit over a dog's mouth. crews responded to the home on grouse lane just after 11:00

yesterday morning. family members discovered the fire when they went to pick up the two dogs inside. one of the dogs was able to get out a back door. the other one had to be rescued from a bedroom. i was getting so sentimental about my own dog. i apreciate that petaluma fire has the equipment to save them. >> it's incredible when you see these firefighters do anything to save a dog or a cat -- >> way to go. thank you for doing that. christmas cleanup can be a little daunting. but there are a few tips to make it easier in san franciso. >> break down your boxes for recycling, if you have extras, set them in a small box next to the bin or tie them up with twine. don't put that wrapping paper in the trash. christmas tree collection starts on january 2nd. i don't want to get rid of my tree. i love it. but it's like okay. now i have to get rid of it.

clouds and stars over san francisco. the breezes relax, the clouds go away, it will be a sunny and mild afternoon. it will be clear, calm and much colder tonight. a lot of us in the 30s. our next storm is sunday into monday. let's look at what happens with this storm. all the models try to fade the rain away quickly. by 7:00, 8:00 at the most. by noon, you can see everything is gone. we're dealing with sunshine. i've been watching our rain buckets in the south bay. most are not tipping the last couple of hours. the radar -- future radar rain potential shows not much will fall out of this. maybe 0.01 inches if you're lucky. temperatures, about 55 to 58 degrees. 30s just about everywhere tonight. we have 41 in san francisco, san mateo, santa cruz 40. half moon bay at 42. we have a stretch of dry weather through at least sunday morning. sunday afternoon into monday morning, it's a 1 on the storm impact scale.

mid 50s at 4:00. mid to upper 40s, it will be a chilly one this evening. dry pattern starts today. i'll tell you how long it lasts coming up. >> we have full freeway closure in the south part of the state on i-5 at the grapevine. you can see the chp holding traffic there at the summit over the grapevine due to snow. several major accidents, if you're expecting someone from l.a. or are planning on traveling there early this morning, right now it is completely shut down. we have a serious accident now. this is two overturned vehicles, eastbound 80 near american canyon. chp says they have all lanes temporarily shut down so they can get those vehicles righted and get the tow trucks in there. sigalert eastbound 80 near american canyon. try to avoid that area if you can. and a fire off the freeway at 280 near saratoga, they may have to get fire crews on scene to control the traffic through that area.

so just a towi saratoga on 280. three people are dead after christmas night crash in pleasanton. this happened just before 10:00 last night on northbound foothill road just north of castle wood drive. julian glover is at the scene. julian? >> good morning. heartbreaking morning here in pleasanton. we're able to confirm that five teens were in a car going down foothill road at 10:00 last night when it crashes into a light pole and a tree. three of the teens in that car were killed. two more in the hospital this morning with what's said to be critical injuries. we want to show you foothill road here. this is a dark, windy, country road here in pleasanton. we expect this road to be blocked off until 4:00 p.m. tonight. pg&e on the scene fixing the power lines down by the crash. the cause is still under

c.j. beathard is due in court tomorrow. michael moseley surrendered yesterday. police say he fatally stabbed clayton beathard and another man outside a nashville bar on saturday morning. police tracked him to a vacant home. neighbors couldn't believe what unfolded. >> all of a sudden i heard the noise, come out, come out, we got you surrounded! >> investigators say sunday's incident happened after mosley made an unwanted pass at a female friend of the victims inside the bar. the victims were attacked when they left. in the north bay a man is dead after being hit by a fallen tree in muir woods. officials say the fallen tree hit four other trees causing debris to hit two hikers. a 29-year-old man was killed. the second man suffered minor injuries. the national park service closed a portion of the trail to clean up the debris yesterday.

a mill valley family says they were lucky nobody was hurt when lightning hit a tree and split it in half. lightning hit the 100-foot tall redwood on waterview drive early yesterday morning. pieces of it scattering on the roof of a house, a car and power pole. no one was hurt but a family had to evacuate because first responders were worried the damaged tree could collapse on to their home. >> we heard a big boom. tremendous noise. santa was a little loud, that's okay. everybody is safe. everything can be repaired. >> the family was let back in after a few hours. officials say the tree will be removed. new this morning a report says shoring up san francisco's ocean beach will cost at least $60 million more than previously thought. the $151 million project will begin early 2023 and take about four years to complete.

reopening. a rough post christmas commute for sure. in the south bay, san jose police are investigating a hit and run that left a man dead. it happened just after 2:00 a.m. yesterday on east santa clara street. officers found the victim lying in the street. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. homicide detectives are investigating the motive and circumstances of the death and trying to identify suspects. an 82-year-old great-grandmother is asking for your help after her bag filled with gifts and cash got stolen. she said it happened on an amtrak train going from sacramento to fremont. marsha said she started to look for her bag five minutes before arriving at the station but it was gone from the luggage rack. marsha plays clarinet back home in miami. that was also stolen. >> i don't think it was an accident. i really doubt it because it's big. it wasn't small. you don't take something that big by accident.

>> she said amtrak staff checked other cabins but they could not do much more without delaying the train. that's a shame. to your morning money report. it appears many of you did your holiday shopping online. >> online sales hit a record my. the biggest day for online sales was december 21st, which a lot of people were calling super saturday. consulting and research firm customer growth partners says people spent 34$34.4 billion. that's more than four times the sales from cybermonday. and we're looking live at the new york stock exchange. trading is back open this morning. we're up about 52 points. some malls across the bay area are opening earlier this accommodate the christmas gift returns. today and tomorrow are two of the busiest days for returns for the whole year. if you're looking to wait and make a return, make sure you know the return policy. some stores only give you 15 days. a lot of big box stores will give you 30, and some go up to

90 days. if you don't have a receipt or a gift receipt, you may only get that store credit. yearly job growth in the peninsula region is growing faster than the rest of the bay area. between october 2018 and 2019 employment grew by 3.5% in san francisco and san mateo counties. employment grew 3% in santa clara and san benito counties and 2.2% in alameda counties. unemployment in the san francisco region is also slow at 1.9%. the three lens trend for camera phones is stretching sony thin. the tech giant says they're running chip factories around-the-clock to produce for apple and samsung devices, but the holiday rush is getting too much to keep up with. developers of call of duty modern warfare are offering players the option to drop the

way, down to mountain view. this is the last push from the storm. you can see a trend of it sinking southward and the showers tapering over the south bay. here's a look from the exploratorium, that's a cool shot with some of those lower clouds going up against the higher clouds in the back, the colors are fantastic. the breezes out there, they'll relax as the sunshine becomes more dom nant inant in our fore. much colder tomorrow morning with frost possible inland. our next storm possible sunday into monday. let's look at how quickly future radar gets rid of the rain. you can see it getting rid of the clouds by noon. over the last three hours, they haven't had anything measurable hit any of our buckets in the south bay. we're not expecting more to do that. at least according to that radar. temperatures today, from about 54 in richmond to fairfield, 58. a look at the freezing cold temperatures up in the north bay valleys.

it is 6:54. here's 7 things to know before you go. such a sad situation, the chp investigating a horrific crash in pleasanton. it killed three teens. it sent two others to the hospital with major injuries. this happened around 10:00 last night on foothill road near castle wood country club. that road will remain closed until 4:00 p.m. as crews repair a damaged power pole. >> couple things weather-wise. we have the beach hazard statement for the rip currents and the sneaker waves until 9:00 this evening and we have a slight chance of a stray shower in the south bay, that's up for another hour or so. increasing sunshine, slightly milder, mid to upper 50s this afternoon. number three, hazardous beach conditions are in effect in the san francisco and monterey bay areas until 9:00 tonight. some of the risks are sneaker waves, large shore breaks and rip currents.
