great to be with you guys. hope everybody had a great holiday, and now that post-christmas travel rush is under way. millions of americans are heading out to catch their flights home. you're looking live at chicago's o'hare international airport. some are already there, but this is the calm before the storm. >> there's a new storm moving across the nation. it's posing a threat to millions of folks hitting the road this morning, trying to get home. rob marciano checking the latest for us. how tricky is this storm going to be for us? >> out west, and it will be all be heading east. we have back to back storms. this is the first one heading west toward utah, and then in the four corners region there, a highway spinout, and a small accident. i-40 and arizona at the higher elevations seeing this drive on christmas night. so a dicey, dicey drive there. we have a number of weather watches and advisories that are posted for this next storm that's coming, and winter storm watches now east of denver into parts of northern nebraska. wind advisories for los angeles

and much of southern california. winter storm warnings now posted outside san diego, and up to 30 inches of snow. the grapevine on i-5, shut down, and that's at about 4,000 feet and snow and heavy rain. this is a compact storm rolling through california, and will go through the mountain west tomorrow, and into the plains on saturday. look at chicago, st. louis, little rock looking for heavy rain here, and a lot of warmth building up. we'll see storms heading towards the weekend. back to you. >> rob, thank you. we'll check on the travel situation with alex perez from o'hare airport for a balmy chicago for lida good tornisng to you, alex. >> reporter: hey, t.j. it's felt more like spring here rather than winter. we hit 57 degrees here on christmas day. this is the warmest christmas we have had since 1982. now i want you to take a look behind me here, the scene at o'hare. you see the terminal busy with passengers checking in for their flights. today and tomorrow are expected

to be some of the busiest travel days this holiday season. nearly 3 million passengers are expected to fly. t.j.? >> some folks are going to hit the road. what are the roads going to look like? >> reporter: the roads will be busy especially today, and especially this afternoon and this evening. it could take some drivers up to twice as long to get to their destination than it usually takes later this evening, so in some places it's not going to be pretty. t.j.? >> appreciate your honesty there. alex, thank you so much. tom? t.j., thank you. turning now to president trump celebrating christmas with his family in florida. lawmakers are locked in a bitter holiday standoff, and the president had some words for house speaker nancy pelosi concerning the impeachment showdown. abc's rachel scott is in west palm beach with more. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: tom, good morning. the president did not hold back on christmas. he started the day with a holiday message calling for unity and respect, and ended with an attack on democrats, accusing nancy pelosi of a power

grab ahead of the impeachment trial. president trump spending the holidays in florida, attending a christmas eve church service with the first lady and sharing a warm message with the troops. >> tremendous warriors and we appreciate you so much. >> reporter: he still had impeachment very much on his mind. taking questions from reporters, the president once again lashing out against house speaker nancy pelosi. >> she hates the republican party. she hates all the people that voted for me and the republican party. she's doing a tremendous disservice to the country. she's not doing a great job. >> reporter: the president has repeatedly gone after pelosi for not sending the articles of impeachment to the senate. digging in on christmas day calling impeachment a scam writing dems want to run majority republican senate. pelosi standing her ground in a letter to house democrats. the speaker writing, it now remains for the senate to present the rules under which we will proceed, adding, we can then appoint managers.

senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he's in no rush to have a trail and plans to work hand in hand with the white house throughout the process. >> we'll be working throughout this process hopefully in a very short period of time in total coordination with the white house counsel's office. >> reporter: now that comment earning public criticism from a member of mcconnell's own party, senator lisa murkowski. >> when i heard that, i was disturbed. to me that means we have to take that step back from being hand in glove with the defense. >> reporter: and senator murkowski is one of few republicans who have not completely dismissed the case against the president. she believed democrats rushed the impeachment process, but says she wants to remain objective during a trial saying she has not yet made up her mind on how she would vote. tom? >> she's definitely making her views heard.

rachel, thank you. diane? >> tom, thank you. the president is commenting on that christmas gift threat by north korea. matt gutman is in south korea with that. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning. military officials here in the korean peninsula tell me that tensions are always high here, and that's because you have north korea, a nuclear state that almost prides itself on being unpredictable. now u.s. forces are always ready here, and now you also have officials across this region on high alert. this morning, u.s. assets including a squadron of spy planes are peering into north korea hunting for signs of a possible missile launch. the planes part of a routine mission with this reconnaissance aircraft and a global hawk drone. the north koreans promised a chase gift to the u.s. and the

president seemed to shrug it off on christmas eve. >> maybe it's a nice present. maybe he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test, right? i may get a vase. i may get a nice present, but you don't know. you never know. >> reporter: these recent satellite images captured construction activity at north korean military bases associated with missile production, but after three high profile meetings with kim jong-un -- >> we will have a terrific relationship, i have no doubt. >> reporter: including that trip to north korea, negotiations have taken a nose dive. they have tested missiles a dozen times in the past year, and kim with an ultimatum, demanding the u.s. loosen the strangle hold of economic sanctions by the end of the year, hinting at a possible resumption of new missile tests. now christmas has come and gone, but we're told it's unlikely kim jong-un is going to end this year in silence. it's still possible we might see long-range missile launches or even a nuclear test, but most

analysts believe that kim is going to issue some sort of hard line anti-u.s. position in his end of year address, possibly spelling an end to that two-year thaw in north korean and american relations. diane? >> all right. many agencies watching this one closely. matt gutman, thank you. t.j.? we turn now to those christmas clashes in hong kong. hundreds of pro-democracy activists descended on shopping malls during the holiday. more than a hundred protesters were reportedly arrested clashing with police. these anti-government protests have been happening for the past six months. across the pond, it was a very royal christmas. the queen reflected on a bumpy year in her annual christmas address while some of the youngest members of the royal family stole the show. lama hasan is at kensington palace with more. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you, diane. four generations of royals kicking off christmas day with that walk to church, this featuring none other than prince george and princess charlotte

spreading some festive cheer and charming the crowd. for the first time ever, prince george and princess charlotte taking center stage during a royal christmas tradition, joining a royal christmas tradition, attending a church service with the queen and the family stealing the show. after a short service and a mini curtsy, courtesy of charlotte, the cambridges worked the crowd, and they couldn't get enough of them. brother louis too young to join in, but we did get to see him in this brand-new image snapped by mom kate. doting dad, william, planting a kiss on his cheek, releasing the image on social media wishing their followers a very happy and relaxing christmas day. perhaps taking cues from the queen. her majesty reflecting on 2019 in her annual address to the nation, calling it quite bumpy. >> the path, of course, is not always smooth and may at times this year have felt quite bumpy.

>> reporter: acknowledging a turbulent year for her country and perhaps her family as well. it hasn't been all that smooth recently for prince andrew after that interview about his friendship with jeffrey epstein, keeping a low profile. andrew went to church with prince charles for the early morning service. then choosing to stay at home with his father, prince philip. and yes, while there was interest in whether or not prince andrew would show up, i think the day belonged to the two little crowd stealers, prince george and princess charlotte, who according to some of the well wishers who lined up, they said they were very well behaved. diane? >> all right, lama. they were indeed. thank you so much. t.j.? we now turn to a heartbreaking story that's really hit our espn family hard. 34-year-old espn college football reporter ed aschoff suddenly passed away on his birthday after revealing he had contracted pneumonia. abc's kenneth moton here with how this all happened, and

again, we said it was his birthday, but this was also on christmas eve. just a heartbreaker, kenneth. >> reporter: extreme heart breaker, t.j. this one has been a difficult one to grasp. ed aschoff young at the top of his game, seemingly healthy, and then dying after revealing a battle with pneumonia. at just 34 years old, he was the future. a rising star in college football reporting on espn. aschoff had been public about his health problems writing before thanksgiving, for someone who never gets sick, i have had some fever, cough, fatigue flu thing for about two weeks now. earlier this month, the sports reporter revealed he had been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. aschoff tweeted, days are getting better, but nights are basically fever, and coughing and sweating. on christmas eve espn confirmed he died on his 34th birthday, just months ahead of his spring wedding. the tributes have been pouring in from the sports world. his colleagues remembering him for his work as an anti-bullying

activist and his dedication to his job. we are thinking about our sister station espn and his family today. >> dr. ashton here with me now. people hear pneumonia. seemingly perfectly healthy, 34-year-old man. how does this happen? >> let's talk about what pneumonia is, t.j. you get an infection in the air sacs of the lungs. they fill up with fluid. look at these chest x-rays. healthy on the left. all that black is air. on the right you see white. that's consolidation of infection, and it can be bacterial or fungal. in this season in particular what we see and what we worry about is influenza segwaying into a bacterial pneumonia. people can get incredibly sick. >> how do you know it's taking a turn and you need to see a doctor? >> if you look at these symptoms in adults, t.j., it's important for people to remember, high fever, cough, chest pain that's worse with breathing, a shortness of breathing, elevated

heart rate or respiratory rate, and we make the diagnosis with a chest x-ray and by listening to the lungs. this is important for people to know for adults over the age of 65, there is a vaccine that can dramatically reduce the risk of pneumonia, but we heard it with whoopi goldberg getting it. pneumonia kills upwards of 50,000 adults in this country every year. this is a tragic example of that. >> great lessons here. dr. ashton, thank you so much. tom? all right, t.j., thanks. want to switch back to the holiday season, and one of the most popular gifts out there. gift cards, the national retail federation says more than half of americans purchased them. our erielle reshef is here with more. erielle, we know they're popular. what else do we need to know? >> reporter: tom, there are great gifts. you can give me one after the show. there are two things that often happen. you oftentimes will take your gift card, stash it somewhere safe and you forget where that safe place is or you forget to spend it altogether. to combat that, you want to

today and tomorrow will be the busiest days of the holiday season with nearly 3 million passengers expected to fly each day. that strong storm moving across the country is not making things easier. also for the first time in more than 200 years, notre dame cathedral in paris could not hold services for the holiday. the landmark suffered immense damage after a fire earlier this year. the cathedral director now says there's a 50% chance the structure might not be saved. two new parents in new hampshire got a special delivery this morning when their baby decided to arrive a little early. they were ten miles away from the hospital when the mother-to-be's water broke. they called 911 and a quick-thinking police officer raced to the scene and helped deliver baby dominic. a merry christmas to them. >> very merry christmas. all right. now to actor kevin spacey posting another dramatic holiday message. it felt like something out of the "twilight zone,"

brother of the 49ers c.j.beathard, arrested. 23-year-old michael mosley recently added to tennessee's ten most wanted list, was found alone in a vacant home 20 miles outside of nashville and taken into custody on christmas day. >> all of a sudden, i heard, the s.w.a.t. team, come out, come out. we got you surrounded. >> reporter: mosley is accused in the stabbing deaths of 22-year-old clayton beathard and 21-year-old paul trapini. according to police, the young men were murdered outside a bar following an argument that began when mosley seen in this surveillance video released by the metro nashville police department allegedly made unwanted advances towards a female friend of the victims. >> during the fight, the investigation shows that mosley was armed with a sharp object, and during that fight the two victims were fatally stabbed. their friend, a 21-year-old, was also injured. he has wounds to his arm and eye. that 21-year-old victim continues to recover. >> reporter: beathard's older

days in a row people are doing this, and probably the easiest is time-restricted eating, where you say, you only eat between the hours of noon and 8:00 p.m., let's say. >> so me and my wife have tried this. we did the 16-hour one. is there one that's better if you want to eat an early dinner like at say 4:00 p.m. or if you want to eat a late dinner? does it matter? >> we don't know about the hours and how much you need. you need at least 8 hours of fasting. 12 to 16 is probably the sweet so. -- spot. you can make them whenever you want. this is not for everyone. so pregnant women, children or teenagers, people with diabetes or someone with an eating disorder probably should stay away from this, but you'll be hearing a lot more about this. the science is pretty sound. it's pretty easy to do, and we have to remember, most of that time you're asleep anyway. >> it gives you energy. you're saying research shows that as well. >> i agree. >> thank you so much. t.j., over to you. now to a new series that we can all use after a whirlwind holiday week. the best sleep yet. this morning we're taking a look at teens and how their sleep deprivation is even sparking debates over school start times. i got a first hand view of the struggles that they're dealing with, and some tips to help teens get a better night's sleep. >> in the morning, i have no energy whatsoever. >> reporter: for christina and michael uzzi, mornings are rough. >> waking up in the morning is really hard for me. >> did you do your calendar? >> reporter: mom jennifer says the teens are chronically sleep-deprived. >> it's very concerning about how tired she looks. michael a little bit better

with that, but still looks extremely tired. >> reporter: they aren't alone. the national sleep foundation says teens need eight to ten hours a night. analysis by the cdc found less than 30% are getting that amount on school nights. >> people who are deprived of sleep, whether they're teenagers or ail aduldults, they're prese with more mental health systems than they would if they got better sleep. >> reporter: more than 100 school districts are considering later start times, but why are teens up so late? >> i think a big part of the problem is the phones, and the computer usage. >> i feel most awake during the night. >> reporter: dr. david anderson says biology, workload and habits are to blame. >> teenagers undergo a rhythm shift where they start going to sleep later and waking you later. you see levels of homework increasing and technology pushing them to stay up later. >> reporter: do you think it could be beneficial to move school times up later? >> that would be great in line

with a teenager's circadian rhythm, but there are limits we need to set. >> reporter: some tips he suggests, get sunlight in the morning and keep lights dim in the evening. avoid sleeping in on weekends, and find a non-digital way to unwind before bed. but the uzzis say schools need to make a change, and not just to start times. >> everybody is telling kids to put your phone downs more, but schools are increasing the screen time. it's impossible for them to do homework without being connected. >> reporter: when it comes to homework, dr. anderson says save reading for last, and there's no one size fits all. monitor your teens and encourage what's working for them, and discourage what's not. involve them in is that discussion as much as possible. >> one of the big things is the light on your screen, right? adjusting that can help out a lot? >> there are tools to do this. screens will be destructive to your sleep, but they can help. you can try programs like flux to reduce blue light on the

computer. on the phone, go to settings, and then display and brightness, and on the iphone, you can play with the brightness and dim the lightness on the phone. you can use night shift to adjust the color of the phone. that reduces blue light, and newer phones also have a dark mode. >> that helps you out a lot. the best thing parents can do is lead by example. make sure you don't take your phone and ipad into bed so your kids don't see that. >> if you want your kids to have good habits, not only do you have to model good sleep habits, but if you are going to deal with a sleep-deprived teenager, but you want to be well-rested. >> no texting. >> no texting. >> t.j., over to you. all right, guys. i have two letters for you. m.j. he's that big of a deal. you know who i'm talking about, michael jordan. we turn to an epic trailer to "the last dance," co-produced by espn and netflix. >> what's better than fourth quarter jordan? it tells the incredible

really nice fiber-rich breakfast, you're going to be more satiated longer. i prepared this gorgeous bread that has about 24% of the daily fiber. there's a ricch yogurt on top, and pomegranate seeds. i'm wapairing it with dandelion tea which is healthy, and it boosts your gut health. >> it's quick to make. >> super. you'll be done, in and out in seconds. >> someone like me, who wants to get going, what are some tips of what to eat in the morning? >> it's really important to stay well-hydrated. you're looking at this, like, breakfast salad and saying, what does this have to do with being hydrated? being hydrated is important to the metabolisms. here i have chosen some spinach

and leafy green salad. hang with me. hang with me. >> okay. >> blueberries, and we have pomegranate seeds. you can see i like the color, right? i'll go in with my fingers. they're clean, don't worry. cucumbe cucumbers. >> for breakfast, okay. >> stay with me. >> all right. >> now we'll top it with avocado. >> okay. >> you won't believe this. this is approximately equivalent to two glasses of water. why? these are vegetables and fruits with a high water content. when you have this, you know, you're almost there. >> right. the other big question, we eat so much sugar during the holidays. i was there yesterday. so many great candies and desserts. >> i know. >> look at these beautiful doughnuts. >> i know. >> you have the salad and now these doughnuts and this is just beautiful right here. >> how many times have you been at, like, a holiday breakfast or brunch and there are doughnuts there? usually they have eggs there as well. >> okay. >> i'm suggesting you want to balance it out by adding protein to your routine because

shuge sugars, and you're more satiated and not searching for this later. when they are there at the table, and there are these doughnu doughnuts, pair it with an egg. you'll be happy. >> i like that. finally though, some people try to do i'm going to try to do a 21-day dry january. you're saying that's not the best thing to did. >> the body recognizes alcohol as a toxin. it's on a j- shaped curve. maybe protective, and too much is absolutely toxic. i say, try monday through friday, no alcohol, and then on the weekends, go for that moderate intake. you're reaping the benefits of both sides. >> you say moderate intake. are we talking about a couple of marg ritas or one beer? >> one drink for women and two for men. >> okay. >> don't, like, you know, save up from the week and then have

right? it's a truly magical meaning now with a special little girl who happen bump into two sta strangers literally, and it sparked a bond. >> reporter: belle gesellman just loves showing off her new and special golden ring. a serendipitous moment at disney world just last month delivered belle's gift. belle and her family were walking in hollywood studios park when belle bumped into david and jennifer cobb. >> i saw my daughter, belle, following me, and she walked right between this couple. >> we bumped in, well, rather this little girl almost bumped into us, and she was just -- i mean, she was absolutely adorable. >> they asked if they could give her something. i don't know what, and they handed her a ring and told me how they were visiting disney on the one-year anniversary of their daughter's passing and

wanted to gift her this mickey mouse ring. >> we heard about the disney magic and everything, and i truly believe that was a magical disney moment. >> reporter: but after handing belle their gift in a flash, they were gone. the kesselmans didn't even know their names. >> i just had to make sure they knew that it went to someone who's going to hold it dear. >> reporter: after a facebook post and a hunt, the gesellmans soon reunited with jennifer and david cobb to answer questions, share their stories and spread some holiday cheer. jennifer and david came to massachusetts to see belle and her family. this time, for more than just a few seconds. >> how are you? >> hey. good to see you. >> reporter: belle, like the cobbs' daughter, rachel, struggled with chronic illness early in life. belle is recovering and doing well now. >> we have matching rings. >> reporter: the rings are part of a special mickey mouse ring
