answer. anser? >> ama and dan, foothill reopened about an hour ago. crews out here since last night. we were able to confirm the name of two of the victims. they are twin brothers, mark anthony and michael angelo urista. they both went to dublin high. they were just 16 years old. >> it was wrapped around the tree. i've never seen anything like that. >> reporter: sharon and her husband were the first to see the crash, which happened on this street behind their house. they immediately called 911. >> i could make out that the car was pinned up against the tree, roof-first. it was on its side, roof-first and more or less bent as a c-shape under the tree with the under side of the car being what you could see. and it doesn't look good. >> the crash happened on foothill road in pleasanton. emergency crews arrived within minutes. all five people in the hyundai sedan were teenagers. >> we've had about eight or nine

people die along here. and this is just the most recent. this is a tragedy. >> tom coleman didn't see the accident, but he said foothill is a dark, windy road and notorious for racing. >> tried to create an awareness with other people living here about the dangers of speeding. last year it's been especially bad. i don't know. i'm not sure. just maybe this road got rediscovered as a place to drag race, but it's not -- it's not a good situation. >> steve says he was watching as fire crews arrived on scene and heard as they pronounced three of the victims dead. >> i think about what christmas will be for them all these years in the future. completely changed. >> now we are waiting for more details from chp as to what may have caused this accident. we do know that two of the victims who survived were ejected from the car. they were taken to the hospital with major injuries.

no update on their condition. reporting live, anser hassan, abc7 news. >> thank you. in the north bay, visitors returned to muir woods today after a man was killed on one of the national park's famed redwoods fell on top of him during a hike on christmas day. witnesses say there was no warning at all when the tree suddenly fell alongside the hillside trail. the impact pinned subhradeep duthu of minnesota. a woman survived after being hit by falling debris. today tourists still visited despite yesterday's tragedy. >> this is the thing. nature, you just don't know what's going to happen. i feel very sad for the person's family and, you know, nobody deserves to be crushed by a tree. but, you know you have to know what you're dealing with. >> the national park service considers duthu's death to be an isolated incident. officials are keeping part of the trail closed until the fallen tree is removed. san jose police are now calling a fatal hit-and-run early yesterday morning a

homicide. at around 2:15 a.m., police responded to the 1200 block of e santa clara street. they found a body lying in the middle of the street on east santa clara and a load gun not far away. police later found out there was an argument between two men that night and one man shot the other. that shooter tried to run away, but police say this woman, sabrina gutierrez ran over him and killed him. she is a relative of the man who was shot. police arrested her and booked her into santa clara county jail on murder charges. oakland police say the rescue of a 14-year-old girl has led to prison time for a human trafficking suspect. 37-year-old joshua johnson pleaded guilty to charges of pandering a minor under 16 and was sentenced to eight years in prison. the oakland police department tweeted this picture of abc7 news anchor eric thomas covering the story today. here's more on what eric found out about the operation that put johnson behind bars. >> and during the operation were able to rescue a 14-year-old

girl. >> oakland police lieutenant james beer discussing the outcome of an undercover operation along the notorious international boulevard, known for prostitution and for underaged children being forced into sex work. further investigation led strorgs this man, 37-year-old joshua johnson. >> he was charged for rape, child molestation, pimping and pandering and prostitution. >> police say he lured her in with promises of care and kept her from leaving with threats of violence. >> it's nationwide, but we do experience quite a bit of it here in oakland and in san francisco. >> too much for people who live along international boulevard. >> i guess things will be better after having more patrols. >> the fbi says the bay area, plusnd sz counties form the third busiest human trafficking corridor in the nation. in our position on the west coast makes an attractive destination to bring in exploited children from overseas. police are seeing so much of it that it takes a toll.

>> after experiencing a number of these investigations, it is actually traumatic experience for the officers as well as obviously the victims. >> the suspect, joshua johnson, plead no contest this month to pandering of a child under the age of 16. the other charges were dropped. he has been sentenced to eight years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender. in walnut creek, eric thomas, abc7 news. all right. if you use vca, you're in for changes. after seeing declining ridership over the past four years, public transportation in the south bay is getting a redo. it's partly because more people are using uber and lyft these days. abc7 news is working to build a better bay area, and that includes mass transit. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen looks at what vta is doing to make its system more rider friendly. >> this weekend, the vta will usher in a new era of bus and light rail service. and with its biggest changes in more than a decade, riders are

expect greater frequency on 20 of the agency's most popular bus routes as well as the debut of a new light rail line. to get ready for it, dozens of vta employees are spending today and tomorrow swapping out the old bus signs for new ones at nearly 3300 stops across santa clara county. vta officials spoke to abc7 news from inside the command center in san jose where they're keeping track of field crews and their progress. >> we've been working on this since 2016. we were getting ready for the new bart service to come into milpitas in the north san jose area, and we knew that that was a great opportunity to really look at the service and see where we might make our biggest gains in ridership. >> ridership has been on the decline in recent years. despite that, sjsu urban planning expert kelly snyder says there is still demand for high quality and reliable service. >> if you have to take two or three different kinds of buses and trains, that's where you start to lose the really big percentages of riders. you want to be where people are

starting their journey and get them to where they're ending it. >> the new service plan incorporates community feedback that was gathered over the past year and a half. but some routes are being eliminated, such as the one used by monica malin who travels from ca cambrian park to the university. >> i'm hoping we can bring the routes back and do oer things. >> as part of the switch, the vta is offering free rides to the public for four days starting saturday. in san jose, chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> a ride on one of san francisco's iconic cable cars is about to get more expensive in the new year. starting january 1, prices to ride on any of the lines will go up from $7 to $8. there is a silver lining next week. you can catch a ride for free at any time on new year's eve. the organizers of burning man are suing the federal government, hoping to recover millions of dollars.

it may be the holiday season, but there is no joy when of find a broken parking metere them in san francisco are constantly jammed or broken. >> abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area and parking is a big issue for a lot of us. >> it's also an issue for the city, which can't collect revenue because the broken meters. >> abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez has more on this issue. >> like this meter you see the coins stuck in there. >> oh, the coins? >> and just like that, this meter technician clears the coins that have been jammed. it appears to be a common problem in san francisco. here we are on grant avenue in north beach. i take out my wallet to get some quarters and quickly discover that nearly every other meter on the street was jammed. >> there is another one. >> in some cases the meter is

jammed on purpose and the coins are later fished out. >> we do everything we can to put the quarters in or you'll put the money in and it's not registering. >> the san francisco municipal transportation agency says there are other options. here is what they told us last june. >> you should be prepared with a plan b, which should be a parking card, a credit card. >> let's say it's possible i don't have a credit card. plan b is to then buy a parking card. but where do i get one? sfmta told me there is an app to locate a store near you. it says the closest one is s & s grocery, 1461 grant avenue. that way. but by walking a block, i risk getting a ticket. and when i get there, they've run out of the $20 cards, leaving me with one option, paying for a $50 card. in 2012, sfmta reported more than $47 million from annual meter fees. but because of the holidays, no

one at sfmta was available to tell us how much revenue if any the city now fails to collect because of these broken meters lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> so the san francisco municipal transportation agency asks if you park at a broken meter, parking is limited to the posted time limit, or four hours, whichever is shorter. but you should check the meter. if it can accept any physical form of payment, coins, a debit card, it is not considered broken. if you see a bag, you should remove the bag and check the meter. oakland court has postponed a decision on whether a group of mothers occupying a home. moms for housing moved into the magnolia street home last month to draw attention to the homeless crisis. a judge has ordered them to leave, but he is giving them a chance to make their case for staying. this morning the group's supporters spoke out.

we had some early morning cloud cover, giving way to sunnier skies. and we had a really nice day across northern california. southern california still dealing with some issues. you can see the area of low pressure spinning off the coastline. still i-5 over the grapevine, it is closed. we have snow working through parts of southern california. a lot of rain. but good news, this is going move out over night and that will bring tranquil weather. the next couple of hours, still have an active ocean current. you see wave heights from 11 to 14 feet high. the waves will begin to subside overnight as well. speaking of tonight, clear out. a good recipe for radiational cooling out there. dropping well into the 30s. and we'll also watch for some areas of patchy dense fog in our north bay valleys. we'll break down the day tomorrow on the 12-hour day planner. really a nice-looking day. we'll start out with the cold temperatures in the 30s. plenty of sunshine. so by 4:00, we're bouncing back boo the mid and uerpp

>> one of my reps told me i shouldn't have packed such nice things in my luggage to have avoided this. >> she posted the story to facebook with which her fellow colleague lauren saw. abc7 news interviewed her in october when delta airlines used roadie to deliver her lost bags. her items were also missing. delta ultimately reimburse herd $5,000. >> we kind of started to wonder is this something that might be happening pretty frequently with third party delivery service. >> in email statements, united tells abc7, quote, we are investigating the situation and our customer care team is reaching out to our customer to learn more. where's my suitcase writes as united airlines investigates this customer's claim, if required, our company would be in full cooperation as there are multiple touch points in the journey of a checked bag. united tells her it will need six to eight weeks to investigate, and that she will need to provide receipts for any items over $100.

unfortunately, she isn't sure that she has all of those receipts and that expensive burberry jacket, she says that was a gift. also, she says she has not heard from anybody from where's my suitcase directly since she reached out to them. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. the president went after speaker nancy pelosi, governor newsom, and the city of san francisco in a post-christmas tweet storm. he called pelosi's district, which includes most of the city, of course, one of the worst in the united states when it comes to the homeless and crime. one of pelosi's fellow democrats, east bay democrat mark desaunier reacted on abc7 news at 4:00. >> he is unhinged in my view, and this is what he does. he attacks anybody who looks like they'll disagree with him. >> unhinge order just strategic in the way he tries to control the conversation? >> i suppose there is a certain amount of predictability. he does this frequently. but he also - r-el hationship with the truth and accuracy is not a close one.

>> we appreciate the congressman coming on with us today. the president also railed against democrats for treating him unfairly during the impeachment inquiry. but now a republican is speaking ay in florida, but still fuming over impeachment, firing off a new string of attacks on democrats this morning, blasting house speaker nancy pelosi, slamming her california district and criticizing her for threatening to delay his senate trial by withholding articles of impeachment from the senate. >> she hates the republican party. she hates all of the people that voted for me and then party. >> pelosi is refusing to take the next steps in the impeachment process, explaining in a letter to her colleagues it now remains for the senate to present the rules under which we will proceed. democrats are pushing to have new witness testimony and

documents as part of the president's trial, but republicans already indicated they're likely to reject those requests. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell telling fox news he'll work hand in hand with the president. >> but we'll be working through this process, hopefully in a fairly short period of time in total coordination with the white house counsel's office. >> a member of mcconnell's own party now distancing herself from those comments. alaska senator lisa murkowski, a moderate republican, expressing her concerns on ktu tv. >> when i heard that, i was disturbed. to me, it means that we have to take that step back from being hand in glove with the defense. >> murkowski becoming the first republican to publicly voice those concerns. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says the two sides are at an impasse, and that he doesn't expect much progress until after lawmakers return from recess in the new year.

united parcel service expects the number of return packages to hit a record high following this year's holiday shopping season. ups says it expects to process 1.9 million returns. that's up 26% from a year earlier and a seventh consecutive annual record. i guess that many sweaters just don't fit. >> yeah, right. and stores are packed today with shoppers looking for great deals and gift recipients rni emha jt didn't work out. maybe not quite the right fit. >> it happens all the time. the store policies can be generous, but maybe not in the way you think. 7 on your side's michael finney is here to show you what you respect when you try to return that gift.

heavy snow on i-5 at the grapevine once again made it difficult for holiday travelers traveling in and out of southern california. >> many drivers got stranded overnight on the pass, and that road is still closed tonight. >> john haskell from our sister station in los angeles brings us that story. >> the snow continues to fall on the grapevine, which means it's still closed and those stranded wednesday night are no longer on the interstate but still snowed in. >> it started snowing halfway through the road. so at this point, like our windshields were very blurry. our defrosters weren't working and we had to stop along the road. but overnight, we just woke up and everything is white. >> chris and his sister spent christmas in lancaster and were

a major thoroughfare for people especially during the holidays. around here, it's quiet. our rain from yesterday, it is out of here. today was just a gorgeous day. fresh air, lots of sunshine. we will take you to southern california right now, where you can see the snow, especially over i-5. it is dwindling. this storm brought several inches of rain, feet of snow to the higher terrain. it is pushing out over the next couple of hours. still, a winter storm warning in effect until 10:00 p.m. tonight in the higher terrain above about 6,000 feet. a wind advisory around l.a. proper. you can see that until tomorrow morning. so it's still windy down there. back at home the winds are light and will remain light. not nearly as windy as last night. winds in most cities less than 10 miles per hour. temperature-wise, we're slowly dropping through the 50s and into the 40s right now. yes in store for a pretty cold night on the way. overnight tonight, if you're going to be out later on, bundle up with the layers, the hat, the scarves and gloves. it will drop well into the 30s in most communities under plenty
