because there's nothing upsetting the vehicle. >> reporter: when you do need to turn, no matter what kind of car you're driving, josh says to perform one action at a time. while still in a straight line, gently press on the brake to slow the vehicle. once at a safe speed, release the brake, and then make your turn. once the wheel is straight again, that's when you accelerate. steering combined with braking or accelerating increases your chances of losing control. >> you should try to do one and only one thing at the same time. >> reporter: if you can't avoid a fishtail, you want to steer calmly in the direction you want to go. >> basically if the rear of the vehicle is moving right, you want to steer to the right. >> reporter: now we reactivate the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. that tells each wheel when to brake. now required on all cars and most trucks and suvs built after 2012. >> i'm braking. you can see i'm steering. the vehicle is going where i want to, it's not out of control. >> when you start turning, that's when you start losing control. the system though is activating, and the system is keeping the car pretty much in control. >> reporter: josh warns no system is foolproof. his number one tip for all drivers, a simple one. >> if conditions are inclement out there, slow down. >> gio benitez, abc neyork

>> reporter: just outside of los angeles, a one-two punch. up to 2 feet of snow in some places coupled with strong winds. with low visibility, authorities shut down the part of i-5 known as the grapevine and part of i-15, trapping drivers in whiteout conditions. >> never imagined this would happen. yeah, look around, this is us. >> reporter: johnny lim stuck eight hours before help finally arrived to get him out. this stranded in the snow overnight, including a truck driver found dead this morning in his rig. the cause of death now under investigation. at lower elevations, torrential rain. >> it's pretty bad out there. >> reporter: leaving cars swimming through intersections. one stranded, pushed out by a police cruiser. the l.a. fire department rescuing a 52-year-old man from six feet of cold water overnight. >> we have a victim back to the shoreline.

14-year-old has been questioned by police about the murder of college freshman tessa majors. police say the boy was found after a two-week manhunt. while in custody the teen was photographed, fingerprinted, and a sample of his dna was taken. he hasn't been charged and was released into the custody of his family. a 13-year-old boy is being held. he's facing a felony murder charge for majors' death. family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil for two men stabbed to death at a nashville bar. one of those victim was 22-year-old clayton beathard, younger brother of c.j. beathard, a quarterback for the san francisco 49ers. michael mosley, the suspect, was arrested christmas day after several days on the run. he'd been on the state's most wanted list. mosley is due in court this morning. >>. >> an intense manhunt is under way for two suspects in a deadly armed robbery of a denny's restaurant in virginia. two people were shot including a food delivery driver who did not survive. abc's adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: a manhunt for these two armed robbery suspects who manassas, virginia.

the suspects seen entering the restaurant after 2:00 a.m., one pulling a pistol, the other a baton, demanding cash from employees and customers, ordering 20 people to the ground. >> one person shot in the stomach and right leg, one person supposedly shot in the head. >> reporter: one of the men shot a 34-year-old customer seated on the floor, cooperating with their orders. then police say yusuf oscar, picking up a delivery order, unwittingly held the door open for the suspects, the 56-year-old hit in the head with a baton then shot to death. >> two males, 6 foot, all dressed in black, handguns. >> reporter: the 34-year-old in the hospital with serious injuries but expected to survive. the suspects didn't get away with any money. police believe this incident is linked to three armed robberies in the area that occurred in the past few days. wall street opens with this three major averages at record

highs. traders were in a buying mood as they returned to work after christmas. >> the rally sent the nasdaq to its first close above 9,000 points. that index has risen for 11 straight trading sessions. one of the factors fueling wall street's current rally is how much people are spending. one estimate says this year's retail sales for the holiday season were nearly 3.5% higher than last year but online sales were up nearly 19% over last year. probably not surprisingly because amazon says it just completed its best holiday season ever. >> lots of amazon orders. it's an annual holiday tradition, regifting those fruitcakes, often dry, stale fruitcakes that no one likes to eat. >> for a family in suburban dallas, their holiday treasure hunt is for a piece of cheese. they've been hiding it from grandma for 26 years. it started as a joke but the kids forgot about the cheese. it was still there a year later. so they kept checking it every year.

weekend. i'm sure some people are going to party it up. >> yeah. >> like it's 1999 instead of 2019. >> you're right, preparing to welcome the new year shortly here. we begin with that murder investigation here in new york. police are calling the questioning of a teenager in connection with the murder of college freshman tessa majors a significant development. >> that 14-year-old boy was released by police, and he's waking up in the custody of his family, but his fate is far from certain. this morning a dna test is all that stands between police and the person they believe murdered tess majors. the break in the case comes two weeks after the barnard college freshman was stabbed to death in what investigators say started as a robbery. majors apparently fought back during the attempted mugging, even biting one of her three alleged attackers before she was killed. nypd officers say they believe they found the suspect that was holding the knife. the 14-year-old was located in

the bronx after he jumped out of a car on the way to turn himself in. police say they tracked him using electronic surveillance. he was brought in, photographed, fingerprinted, and swabbed for dna in the presence of his lawyers. the city's chief detective announcing the end of the weeks-long manhunt, tweeting, this is a significant development. although he has since been released to the custody of his attorneys the investigation remains very active. >> i think it should disturb any new yorker when we have a child involved in something this serious. >> reporter: police were led to this latest suspect after another one of majors' alleged attackers, a 13-year-old boy, implicated himself and two others during police questioning. while the 13-year-old is now facing felony murder charges the others have not been charged. the 14-year-old who was released reportedly underwent a cheek swab to collect his dna.

it's unclear when the results of that test will be known. policing searching for two suspects after a deadly armed robbery at a denny's restaurant in manassas, virginia. investigators say two men stormed into the business, ordered everyone to the ground and demanded their cell phones and wallets. a food delivery worker was hit in the head with a baton and shot to death. his family is urging anyone with information to come forward. another victim was shot but is expected to survive. the fbi is assisting with the investigation and offering a $10,000 reward. authorities in alabama are searching for a woman missing for a week. 29-year-old payton houston was last seen leaving a birmingham bar with two men. police say it appears she left the bar willingly with the men. houston later sent a text saying she didn't know where she was and might be in danger. calls to her telephone are going straight to voice mail. her debit card hasn't been used. investigators are searching surveillance video for leads. turning to the weather now, it is making the trip home from christmas celebrations even more miserable than usual. >> a severe storm dumped as much as 2 feet of snow on the highways through southern

there it is. from chicago back towards memphis and houston. janai, kenneth, back to you. >> all right, chris, thank you. the death toll is rising after a devastating typhoon in the philippines on christmas. it caused severe flooding and landslides in both remote villages and popular tourist destinations. many homes were destroyed with 58,000 people forced to evacuate. typhoon winds were as high as 120 miles per hour. for the first time we are hearing from the fiancee of espn reporter edward aschoff. he passed away tuesday at the age of 34. aschoff and his fiancee katy berteau were to be married in april. >> in a series of tweets last night berteau offers thanks for the outpouring of support. abc's gio benitez has more. >> reporter: an outpouring of tributes. >> i'm edward aschoff, espn. >> reporter: after the sudden death of 34-year-old espn reporter ed aschoff following a battle with pneumonia. >> people wanted to be around him.

they wanted to get to know him. that's why he connected with everybody. >> reporter: aschoff, who covered college football for the network, tweeting just before thanksgiving, for someone who never gets sick i've had some fever, cough, fatigue flu thing for about two weeks now. by early december aschoff said what started as a virus had turned into bilateral pneumonia, pneumonia in both lungs. he was put on antibiotics but was still struggling. quote days are getting better but nights are basically fever and coughing and sweating. aschoff passing away on christmas eve, his 34th birthday. >> we have to remember. old, young, healthy, or chronic medical condition, pneumonia has the potential to be fatal. >> reporter: and doctors remind us that dying from pneumonia is relatively uncommon for 34-year-olds, but it does kill 50,000 people every year.

we're back with dramatic video of an avalanche barreling toward skiers in switzerland about 50 miles south of zurich. six people were buried, two of them sustaining minor injuries. other skiers got out of the way as fast as they could. a ski resort about 200 miles east in austria was hit by three avalanches yesterday. there were no injuries there. back here at home a young girl from a new york suburb escaped a frightening incident without being seriously hurt. >> you can see her right there running out into the street. >> oh my goodness. >> i'm going to tell you, she is okay this morning. she ended up on the ground and the bus passed right over her. a woman picked her up and brought her to safety. the 5-year-old suffered some facial bruises, but other than that she was fine. >> oh my gosh, that is very

them to get a subpoena before identifying the driver, forcing police to take a different route. detectives pulled the license plate and eventually tracked down and arrested 27-year-old jose campos. turns out even using his girlfriend's car to make deliveries and police say he has admitted to the crime. >> we thought, this is a no-brainer case. here's the address, here's the date, here's the time, can you tell us who the driver is? wrong. amazon wouldn't tell us. >> reporter: in a statement amazon now says it's working to understand what occurred here to make it right. it happened before christmas. >> hey, stop! put that back! >> reporter: peak season for porch pirates across the country. turns out the stolen package contained soap and other products from bath and body works, total value about $19. the driver has been charged with theft and burglary. victor oquendo, abc news, miami beach. >> thanks to victor.
