5:00 am
good morning. it's friday, december 27th. we're almost to the new year. >> we are. you're up right now, which
5:01 am
means either you can't stand your relatives and you couldn't sleep all night, or you're going to work and you're one of the real ones. hi, mike. >> that would be us, wouldn't it? you're going to work under clear conditions. look at live doppler 7. bone dry. look at sutro power, clean air over top of us once again. dry conditions. it is significantly cooler this morning. some of us may be scraping ice off our car. at noon, 52 to 54 under a mostly sunny sky. partly cloudy, 54 to 56 at 4:00. grab that coat, you'll need it this evening as we drop into the mid to upper 40s by 7:00. still tracking a chance of rain this weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. first, here's sue. >> we have a traffic alert for you. the bay bridge, a car fire, at least a car smoking west of treasure island. i'm watching the tow trucks push that off to the western side of the span. look at this. you're seeing all the brake lights starting from about the s
5:02 am
curve towards the tunnel. so a few backups there, a few cars stacked up. now that they cleared it off the span, it should dissipate quickly. the looking at the western part of the span, you can see the tow truck pushing that car off the bridge there. making its way towards the western side of things. so, better news on the bay bridge. that means hopefully it will be lessening in the slow lanes and the slowness as we get further down the road. we'll check back in a couple of minutes. >> we're starting at 5:00 a.m. with breaking news in oakland. you will look live now from west street between 40th and macarthur boulevard. this is a warehouse fire that started around 2:30 this morning. the oakland fire department is on the scene. they just updated us within the last couple of minutes. they say firefighters are still working to get this fire under control. the warehouse was red tagged last month. it was supposed to be empty. firefighters say six people were
5:03 am
actually inside once they got there. those people were able to escape. one person was taken to the hospital with minor burns. are spraying this fire and as soon as we get more updates throughout the morning we'll let you know on abc7 news. and we're watching that horrible story unfold in the tri valley they're mourning the loss of three teens. >> two other passengers survived and are in the hospital with major injuries. the car they were in took out a power pole and slammed into a tree on foothill road niche castlewood drive. two of the three killed were 16-year-old twin brothers, mark and michael urista. the chp has not confirmed the cause of the crash. they suspect speed a factor. they do not believe alcohol was involved. san jose police are calling a deadly hit and run a homicide. police found a body on east santa clara street early
5:04 am
christmas morning. they say two men got into an argument and one shot the other. the gunman tried to run away. that's when police say a woman ran over the gunman and killed him. they say this is the woman. she's a relative of the man who was shot. police booked her into santa clara county jail on murder charges. new developments, prosecutors in l.a. are reviewing eight cases of sexual assault against harvey weinstein. the l.a. district county's office will determine whether to prosecute the cases. four are from the lapd, four are from the beverly hills police department. more than 30 women accused weinstein of sexual misconduct. the movie producer has a trial set for january 6th in new york on charges that he raped a woman in a hotel room in 2013. president trump is escalating his war with house speaker nancy pelosi and the city of san francisco. in a series of tweets he called pelosi's district which includes most of the city one of the worst in the u.s. when it comes to homeless and crime.
5:05 am
the east bay congressman reacted to mr. trump's remarks. >> he's unhinged in my view. this is what he does. he attacks anybody who looks like they'll disagree with him. >> unhinged or strategic in the way he tries to control the conversation? >> i suppose there's a certain amount of predictability. he does this frequently. also his relationship with the truth and accuracy is not a close one. >> the president railed against democrats for treating him unfairly during the impeachment inquiry. abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and parking is a big issue for a lot of us. it's also an issue for san francisco, which cannot collect revenue because of broken meter meters. like this meter, you can see the coins stuck in there. >> the coins? >> and just like that, this meter tenianlears thatave beena. it appears to be a common problem in san francisco. here we are on grant avenue in north beach. i take out my wallet to get some
5:06 am
quarters and quickly discover that nearly every other meter on the street was jammed. >> there is another one. >> in some cases the meter is jammed on purpose and the coins are later fished out. >> we do everything we can to put the quarters in or you'll put the money in and it's not registering. >> the san francisco municipal transportation agency says there are other options. here is what they told us last june. >> you should be prepared with a plan b, which should be a parking card, a credit card. >> let's say it's possible i don't have a credit card. plan b is to then buy a parking card. but where do i get one? sfmta told me there is an app to locate a store near you. it says the closest one is s & s grocery, 1461 grant avenue. that way. but by walking a block, i risk getting a ticket.
5:07 am
and when i get there, they've run out of the $20 cards, leaving me with one option, paying for a $50 card. in 2012, sfmta reported more than $47 million in annual meter fees. but because of the holidays, no one at sfmta was available to tell us how much revenue if any the city now fails to collect because of these broken meters lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> if you park at a broken meter, parking is limited to the posted time limit, or four hours, whichever is shorter. but you should check the meter. if you see a meter with a bag over it, that doesn't mean it's broken. you have to check to see if it accepts coins or a debit or credit card. really? to me, a bag over it means not working. >> done. you're good. >> okay. rules are rules. >> why else would they have a bag over it? >> that's what i'm saying. >> i'm confused. not confused about the weather. look at this.
