francisco. 45 downtown. it's 34 on the peninsula for redwood city. 36 in half moon bay. agrees are freezing in gilroy. and the golden gate bridge. 31 in livermore right now. and it's awfully cold through the morning hours. this is 8:00. we'll be in the 40s at the coast still. 30s elsewhere. by noontime we're in the 50s and we'll see more clouds by 4:00. it's dry tonight. we'll track the rain for you for your sunday afternoon coming up. kate. >> thanks, lisa irnlts we do have breaking news we are following this morning. authorities say a truck bomb in somalia is claiming at least 76 lives. more than 50 people injured. and officials say the numbers could rise. this is new video of the aftermath. the first reports of the blast came after midnight our time. happened in the arken country capital city. police believe a tax collection center was targeted. this morning there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

and some more sad news this morning. lee mendleson, the san francisco native known for producing a charlie brown christmas died. mendleson a's son he passed away at his home on christmas day in san mateo continue. he suffered from congestive heart failure after a battle with cancer. he was an executive producer of numerous animated peanuts specials with a charlie brown christmas which has become a cherished holiday favorite for so many families. meddleson was 86 years old switching geerps to package thieves, going beyond porch pirates, they are stealing home security cameras. surveillance video is catching some of this in action. a major concern is what the crooks are doing when the cameras come down. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo in the communications hill neighborhood tarringed by the thieves. >> reporter: many living on communications hill have the front door covered.

with the magnet and reached up and got it. >> others reconsidering their camera placement. >> we have more precautionary stuff to take care of. >> doing what they can to avoid falling victim to the triem trend. >> you push a button and everything comes to the front door. you have to sit and wait and see what comes on. >> reporter: the cameras target rd the outdoor stand alone security cameras. this is different from the attached door bells with the video capabilities. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. all right thank you for that, amanda. switching geerps to the east bay. a candle light alvinle is planned to honor three teens killed in a car crash in pleasanton on krms. the victims 16-year-old twin brothers marc anthony and michael angel an urista appear javier ramirez were dublin high school students. two other teens are in the hospital with major injuries. mourners have been gathering at a memorial site on foothill road. >> they always made you smile.

and they were great people to be around. and their spirits just uplifted everybody. >> a vigil will take place at dublin high tomorrow night at 5:00. the dublin unified school district will have grief counselors available when students come back on january 7th. the chp is investigating the cause of that crash well, this is what's left of an oakland warehouse after it was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. the city declared the west street building unsafe late last year. but there were still people inside at the time of the fire. here is the view of the damage from drone view 7. the 8 people inside were fortunately able to escape. but neighbors have been telling local politicians, the property is an ongoing. . and according to the oakland fire department, the property was actually red tagged in both april and november. but a tenant says the owner continued charging people $10 a night to sleep on the couch inside. >> he was trying to get money from people who didn't have any

basically. >> abc 7 news tried to reach the owner but couldn't. firefighters haven't yet determined the cause. they say it could take a while due to the amount of debris and damage inside. two drivers walked away uninjured after a frightening accident left a truck overturned in concord. the woman involved in the crash says she has no idea how it happened. >> i was driving in the fast lane. and honestly i just lost control of my car. i don't know what happened. i'm flabbergasted. i don't know it was the craziest thing ever. really frightening. >> yeah, no kidding. the truck landed cab first on northbound interstate 680. but all the truck driver remembers is seeing the car coming toward him. >> and that's when i probably tried to avoid it, or did it hit me or not? i don't remember and that's when i started feeling that i was flipping over, like left and then right. and then i just keep -- tried to

stabilize. >> the chp kept two more lanes closed about 2 hours while the scene cleared. a masseuse has been arrested accused of sexually assaulting a skpler. investigators had been working on the case since august after a woman called after receiving a massage from this 46-year-old gang wang. he went by the name adam. and there could be more victims. the murder suspect for the brother of 49ers backup quarterback cj beathard is claiming self-defense. aerkz to michael moseley's attorney. moseley is in jail awaiting a hearing next month, accused of stabbing and killing beathard and one other personal outside of a nashville bar last weekend. moseley's attorney says he is looking through curate footage outside the bar. >> i may be wrong but i believe it's showing that mr. moseley is trying to get away from a crowd that might have been waiting on him outside when he walked out.

>> and this morning the first time since his brother's death cj is sharing an emotional tribute via instagram. in a 10-photo album he says it's hard to know where to start for something like this. he goes on to say clay has the biggest heart of anyone i've ever known. later in the post he adds, he didn't used to be this or that, he still is. he just lives in a different place. and that place is called heaven. a little more than a year ago, a fire, the campfire decimated the town of paradise. neighbors have been trying to pick up the pieces from the deadly fire. but rebuilding takes on many forms, including through sports. the warriors welcomed paradise's high school basketball team for last night's game. and abc 7 news reporter luz pena was there. >> reporter: two hours right before the warriors faced the phoenix suns 35 high school basketball players walked in

to our gym in paradise about a month ago probably. it's cool they invited us here. >> the high school seniors hope to leave a legacy and after all they won the first 20 season games in nine years. despite not having a single home game last season. >> what's the message to the young guys back here? >> just keep working hard if you love basketball, keep playing. and you'll get better. >> in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7. in the east bay, oakland police officers will have extra ofrsds on duty this week on dui patrol and to look out for illegal side show activity. police say in the past side show activity has led to death or serious injuries. and that it won't be tolerated. the department will deploy its helicopter to respond to any side shows. officers will be looking for impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. lisa, of course it's important to stay safe out there as we approach the new year's eve week and day.

. all right. well back. you're looking at our oakland 880 camera. you can see the coliseum in the background which is up for sale. cool and chilly, but clear morning. lisa will have more on the weekend and new year's forecast coming up in a few minutes. but here is quite a story. a woman went to visit her pregnant daughter in vallejo after she was complaining that her back hurt. it turns out the baby did not want to wait. the grandmother actually found herself on the phone with 911 talking to a dispatcher who walked her through the entire delivery. as abc 7 news reporter lorin martinez shows us, within six

minutes the baby arrived. >> female seven months pregnant going into labor. >> vallejo fire engine 25 rolled out to a call of a baby being born thursday night. >> she said she couldn't stop pushing. i felt like we're having a baby. >> susan hart has been a dispatcher 32 li 31 years like many delivery 911 calls before guided the family what to do before the paramedics arrived. >> it was like a flood of emotions going through us, like, okay i'm excited. okay, i got to stay calm. >> korless mucker's granddaughter was in labor. putting dispatch on speaker. >> they were so great. they seemed so calm considering. >> i put my hand down and, i mean, just out of no where the baby starts popping out. i thought, oh, my god, no, you know. >> the 911 call came in at 8:03. six months later pb, this baby boy made the grand entrance at 4 pounds 12 ounces born almost two

the changes for three years. >> we were getting ready for the new b.a.r.t. service into milpitas and the north san jose area. and we knew that was an opportunity to look at the service and see where we might make our biggest gains in ridership. >> vt. a employees are changing signs at 3,300 bus stops. to get people used to changes, vta is offering free rides today through saturday. >> well, it was first published before the civil war. it reported through two world wars and now this weekend contra costa county's oldest newspaper will put out its final edition. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas reports from the martinez news gaz et on the last days of operation. >> a good day but sad day because the paper is going to be missed, i'm a sure. >> that's 93-year-old barbara cetko, legal editor at the news

your scheduled collection day, between january 2nd and 15th for pickup. our meteorologist lisa argen has been tracking our forecast. looking clear and chilly today. and lisa, we are getting more rain in a few days. >> that's right, kate. it's just a little more. it's a level 1 on the storm impact scale. you can see for yourself right now, live doppler 7 it's clear. and looking at the theme starting the day, increasing clouds in the north bay later on. as you look at the wider perspective you can see the clouds offshore. ridge of high pressure is protecting us right now. beginning to weaken slide east. as that does erode, the clouds make a comeback for the north bay. and then the rain this time tomorrow pushing into the buerre. here is a live look outside. and really sparkling out there. and certainly cold. just a tiny ribbon of fog out there. 45 san francisco. it's 39 in oakland with 34 in redwoodwood city. low 30s. gill rowpy half month bay. up a dreg at 37 and a live look

from emeryville. low 30s by the delta and livermore and at freezing in santa rosa. 33 petaluma. how about 28 in napa? some of the temperatures are not as cold as yesterday. so you've got the idea. we are still with the theme of very frosty and chilly numbers to start out. and then looking at sunshine returning mixed with hig clouds today. the rain returns tomorrow. it's dry, though, for the end of 2019 and the start of 2020. looking at the possibility of maybe some rain as we get towards the later part of the work week. but that's looking iffy. our beach advisory issued yesterday continues today. the wave heights increase 10 to 13 feet out there. certainly dangerous. our west facing beaches from sonoma through monterey. a level 1 on the storm impact scale comes in this time tomorrow. perhaps through early monday morning but it could be done through the overnight hours. light to moderate rain.

possibility of a thunderstorm perhaps at the coast as we get through the overnight hours. and looking at cold air ushering in once again behind it. so out ahead we are looking at the sun and this time tomorrow here comes the rain, 9:00 in the morning it's overspreading the bay. and then by 1:00 it's scattered showers throughout the bay area, light for the most part but here comes the area of low pressure, the more dynamic parts of the system where you can see the heavier rain, maybe a thunderstorm and then this is about 7:00 at night. all pushing through, through the overnight hours and we're left with a dry start to the work week. if you are working on monday. amounts anywhere from about a half inches for you in hayward to novato, maybe a third inch in richmond, san francisco. that's just a gauge. and we could see of course more amounts in the upper elevations, higher amounts i should say. a look at the highs 54 in the city. 56 in fremont. overnight tonight with the clouds increasing, not as cold, mainly in the 40s. a few 30s in the north bay and

it's 45 in san francisco. and here a look at san jose, 280, where you've been in the 30s. it's freezing santa rosa. 28 in napa. looking at 33 in livermore. coming up from your freezing 32 degree temperature. as we go through the day you notice the 40s, then into the 50s by noontime. it's sunny, a few high clouds, the clouds inside in the north bay staying dry throughout the early evening hour. 8:00 in the 40s and 50s in temperatures will stay slightly warmer ton. rain this time tomorrow. kate. >> all right, thanks, lisa. we do have developing news out of hawaii. authorities found the remains of six of the seven people abarred a helicopter that crashed at the top of a mountain on the island of kauai. the chopper was on the way back from a sightseeing tour of the na pali coast carrying two groups including two children on the pilot. there was no indication anyone survived. the search for the seventh victim resumes today. and the fa. a and ntsb are investigating the

cause of the crash. traffic is moving again on the grapevine section of the interstate 5 in the tahone pass north of los angeles. this after a christmas day storm forced closure. drivers were stuck for 36 hours. before the chp escorted the first group of vehicles off the freeway, not until 11:00 yesterday morning. unfortunately, one driver actually died in his truck during the closure. and now investigators are trying to figure out what caused his death. democratic presidential candidate elizabeth warren took her campaign to san jose yesterday. she says she wanted to spend sometime with childcare providers to get a firsthand look at the issues they face. the senator proposed universal childcare for everyone under 6. she proposed the 2% tax on billionaires would fund the childcare plan. >> that money could then be used for universal childcare, universal prek raise the wages

of every prex and childcare worker. >> warren supports the new law giving childcare providers the option to unionize starting january 1st. governor newsom signed that measure in september. the popular music streaming service spotify says it will not run political advertisements. say going doesn't have the ability to responsibly validate ad but does not include pod casts. the move follows the lead of twitter which of course announced at the end of october that it was banning political ads. millions of letters are written to santa. and every year somehow hundreds of them arrive to one particular new york city apartment. but nobody knows why. >> it really started when we moved into the apartment. the gentleman who had lived there before us told, it was like, oh, yaeb yeah, don't worry about it but you are getth the letter to the santa. dear santa, i don't want

anything for christmas but i'm asking for my brother. started in october. and it was the one or two. and we didn't think anything of it in october. but then getting closer to thanksgiving and it was the mailman coming with, like, stacks of letters to be -- with a side eye, just like, trying to shove it in the mailbox. we definitely felt like we had to do something about it. last year we ate at a soup kitchen because she couldn't afford christmas dinner. so can you send at least a turkey? there wasn't a single home moment i knew i had to activate. it was the collective of reading all the letters over and over again. we threw a 1960s holiday party, a fantastic party. but organically people started tosz the letters stacked up in the corner. i'll just take one. >> it was remarkable when we first saw them. even on the front you could see,

dear santa. it just had the magic to it. we had no idea how they got there. >> the area back in the 180 ohs, sort of sectioned off, the area between 23rd, eighth and ninth into a place called chelsea square owned by a guy by the name of clement clarke moore who famously wrote 'twas the night before christmas. there was thought when he wrote the poem people thought he was santa and delivered letters to his estate. >> do you know the letters still come to that apartment. >> i think it's really sweet. i think it's worried we don't know where they came from or where they get the address. >> there is so many. >> when we got the first letter it was exciting. my gosh, this is real. you know, these kids think that our address is the north pole and it's sweet to know we can have a little part in helping a kid get all of their santa wishes. >> we felt the need to act. we got a bunch of friends and family in our community to get

together and created a non-profit called mushingle on 22nd street. >> and every year we connect families in need to real life elves. >> it's simple. just jump on miracle on 22nd street.com and you can sign up to become an elf. and then essentially you could look around to see which letter strikes your heart and adopt that family. >> we have a lot of different streams coming in for the letters now. it used to be just the brown stone in chelsea. but then we have a big facebook group where they can sign up on our site so they submit the letters, upload them. we are fulfilling letters throughout the united states. >> when you are forced upon something like, something so big, here is 400 letters to santa, i think it really tests you. that's one of the things happening to me that i -- i felt this like overwhelming sense of i have to get this done. i have to get all these
