call today. comcast business. beyond fast. >> announcer: news to build a better bay area. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning. it's sunday, december 29th. i'm amanda del castillo. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> good morning, amanda. it's a level 1 on our storm impact scale. we already have light rain in the north bay, drizzle in the east bay. we'll see downpours throughout the afternoon from a quarter to a half inch and looking at colder weather as the front moves through. you can see a few showers and a heavier cell at the top of mt. helen. further to the south around santa rosa and sonoma, a little bit of drizzle, otherwise lots of clouds out there. the main event still off the coast. and we'll be looking for this to sweep on through the bay area in the next couple of hours.

inside the home with her family. >> i was pretty scared for my sisters. >> reporter: according to san jose fire, the calls reporting the blaze came in around 1:53 p.m. cruz says she saw the smoke from her neighbor's home into their apartment. her first thought was to save her family. >> yes, we did have to take my sisters out. i mostly saw the other side. i just took my sisters and got them in the front. >> reporter: neighbors across the area saw a dark cloud of smoke and called 911. >> i couldn't see the fire, just black smoke. >> reporter: san jose fire confirmed the apartment is a single occupancy unit. this neighbor, who decided not to show his face in fear of retaliation, says the person who lived in the unit where the fire began is known to san jose police. >> sometimes i get up 1:00, 2:00 a.m., i drink a cup of coffee and see people just strolling in. >> reporter: the cruz family says their units have seen smoke and water damage. they're now staying at a hotel nearby provided by the red

cross. a total of six people were displaced by this duplex fire. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. no injuries were reported. san jose fire confirmed that arson investigators were on the scene. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7 news. new this morning, also in the south bay, a 63-year-old woman is dead after she was hit while crossing the street in san jose. she was reportedly lying in the street at oakland road and mckay drive at 5:45 last night. police say she was not in the crosswalk when the driver hit her. this is san jose's 29th death this year involving a pedestrian. last year the city saw 23 pedestrian deaths. today a candlelight vigil to honor three teenagers killed in a car crash in pleasanton on christmas. 16-year-old twin brothers and javier ramirez died in the crash at foothill road.

all three were students at dublin hospital. friends of the victims have been placing flowers and candles at the crash site on foothill loro. >> they made everybody laugh and smile, nobody ever had a problem with them. >> the vigil is tonight at 5:00 at dublin high school. grief counselors will be available when students return to campus january 7th. the chp is investigating the cause of the crash. a quick-thinking samaritan helped stop a suspected thief. he got a big thank you from a woman who had her phone stolen. this morning we're learning more about the man and his nonprofit organization that is working to build a better bay area. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> reporter: this woman is thanking dwayne kemp for stepping in and getting her iphone back from a suspected thief.

most everybody between u.n. plaza and civic center knows kemp. he's a practitioner working for urban alchemy, a city-contracted nonprofit offering safety and service to the community. >> to me "practitioner" means i'm practicing being a good citizen. >> reporter: friday night he helped catch a suspected thief. >> i heard a woman screaming, "stop that guy, he took my phone." >> reporter: kemp says he confronted the suspect. >> i said, give her back her phone. he said, what? i said, give her back her phone. he reached in his pocket and handed her back her phone. >> reporter: the man got away but minutes later the woman who said she had just got the phone as a gift was overcome with gratitude. >> he stopped him. thank you, thank you. >> reporter: truth be told, dewayne does a great thing every day. >> dewayne's boss says dewayne's

activism is almost as remarkable as his bravery. urban alchemy puts former long term offenders to work by making connections with people on the street. the ancient word "alchemy" means turning metal into gold. >> instead of making gold, we're just trying to make our spaces better. >> reporter: he helped stop that supected thief. >> he was a 16 or 17-year-old kid, around my son's age. i just used that father voice. >> reporter: urban alchemy has contracted with the city for several years now. the city says the presence of the practitioners is actually helping reduce crime and drug use in civic center and u.n. plaza. a spokesperson says she wants to make sure the mayor knows about dewayne kemp's act of bravery. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. a major part of our commitment to building a better bay area is of course homelessness. tomorrow the court battle continues for a group of mothers occupying a vacant home in

oakland trying to challenge an eviction order. the group moms for housing moved into the magnolia street home with their children last month to draw attention to the bay area homeless crisis. a judge ordered them to leave. but he's giving them a chance to make their case for staying. the real estate firm wedgwood says it wants to sell the home to a first time home buyer. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. sticking to the east bay, fire investigator are still trying to figure out what caused friday's fire at a red tagged warehouse in oakland. it was declared unsafe last year but there were still eight people living inside when smoke started. abc 7 news stopped by to check on the burning building yesterday. fortunately everybody made it out all right. the oakland fire department says the property was red tagged in both april and november. neighbors had been telling local politicians that the property as a problem. >> some of it had to do with the warehouse people and people who

were in inappropriately living in the warehouse. >> he was trying to get money from people who didn't have any, basically. >> the owner charged people $10 a night to sleep inside. abc 7 news was not able to reach the owner for comment. wildfire victims face a december 31st deadline to file a claim against pg&e, all part of the company's bankruptcy process. claims can be submitted for fires that occurred before january 29th of this year. it means those affected by the camp fire and north bay firestorm can fire. people can submit a claim in person at a pg&e claim service center or online. a missed deadline means no compensation from the utility. happening today, some of you may be picking up your sunday morning edition of the paper for the final time. "the martinez news gazette" is one of the longest running papers in our state but today it's stopping the presses after 161 years. >> a good day but a sad day because the paper is going to be missed, i'm sure. >> a group of current and former

employees got together back on friday to say goodbye to what is a martinez institution. james buchanan was president back in 1858 when the paper first started. its current editor says it's a true neighborhood newspaper. >> we don't rely on wire services. we're not covering sacramento or even san francisco area. we tried to really focus on just things that are in our community. >> staff say the owner hasn't given a specific reason for the closure but it's no secret that small town newspapers are losing money, competing with online news and their big city cousins. lisa, you were not kidding about the cloud coverage this morning. >> i know, it's totally cloudy and even drizzly in some areas as far as the east bay, the coast, and light rain is being reported in the north bay. look at the fog here. this is mt. tam. we're looking at the rain afghanistan first in the north bay, spreading east throughout the day. it will be a quick maneuver but it certainly brings a soggy

this morning the fry's electronic store in pal toe alto is officially out of business. after 30 years of selling electronics in the heart of silicon valley, the store on portage avenue served its final customers on friday because of its expiring lease. the city is also looking to redevelop the 60-acre site. it has five other bay area locations. the golden gate bridge, alcatraz, fisherman's wharf, and the popular musical "beach blanket babylon." the show's run ends on new year's eve. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> reporter: finding true love and politics were center stage on this, the final weekend of "beach blanket babylon." >> they're talented, topical references. it blew my mind. i didn't want it to end. they're so clever. >> i'm from san francisco.

services like lyft and uber. they're putting resources where the demand is greatest for transit. >> we have a threshold of 15 boardings per hour. anything lower than that, we had to take a hard look at whether it was worth put out the resources in those areas. >> service is free until tuesday night to help adjust to the new changes. muni will be offering free lines on new year's eve, until 5:00 a.m. new year's day. muni says board without activating tickets through the app. caltrain and sam trans will be offering free trips during that same time. b.a.r.t. is extending its service until 3:00 a.m. on new year's day, but it won't be free. the agency is telling passengers trains will skip some downtown san francisco stations to better handle crowds. the embarcadero train will only

serve dublin/pleasanton and warm springs lines. happening tonight, the grand finale celebration for the eighth and final night of the union square hanukkah menorah lighting. abc 7 news was there last week for the menorah lighting. the jewish holiday members rates the rededication of jerusalem's second temple. the oil miraculously burned for eight days. tonight's menorah lighting begins at 5:30. storm in the desert, eight inches of snowfall in the high desert. this was sunrise over the trees on friday morning in san bernardino's high desert near ja joshua tree national park. travelers should expect to see

snow and difficult travel conditions. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen, tracking the forecast for us. lisa, we're not going to be experiencing anything close to that. >> no, amanda, we're not. it would be kind of fun, wouldn't it? but we're looking at a fast moving weather system that will allow for rain to arrive probably for move you for the middle afternoon. mt. st. elena, we see a heavier shower system to the east. in the north bay, a little bit of drizzle into oakland, half moon bay. and the visibility has been reduced. the rest of the bay area, lots of cloud cover. and looking at this front to move on through by midday. then the cold area of low pressure behind it, perhaps igniting a thunderstorm, and then cold air to follow starting the workweek, though, dry. the golden gate bridge, plenty of clouds out there. 52 san francisco, redwood city, san jose, 47.

flight for a woman. christina cooke broke the record yesterday, beating astronaut peggy winston's record. cooke is an electrical engineer and will stay on the station until february. that will fall just short of astronaut scott kelly's 340-day u.s. overall record. a russian cosmonaut holds the world record at 15 months in space. hundreds took a chilly plunge into the freezing waters off massachusetts to honor the former college baseball player who inspired the ice bucket challenge. a huge crowd was led yesterday by the late pete frayedy's fiance. he died earlier this month after a long battle with als. his fight inspired the viral 2014 ice bucket challenge which raised hundreds of millions of dollars to find a cure. this event marks what would have been his 35th birthday. still to come on "abc 7 mornings," a community in shock

spotted collecting evidence and photos and police k9s also brought in. >> i got the plate number and gave it to the police. >> reporter: the police say the suspect is now in custody. a car believed to be involved in the incident found 30 miles away in new york city. the attack leaving the community on edge. >> we were scared. but we were not surprised. >> these are terrorists in our country, perpetrating terrorism on other americans. and that's how we should treat it. >> reporter: this comes after a series of anti-semitic attacks in the region within the last few weeks. the nypd investigating at least nine possible cases including this one where a group of teens can be seen on surveillance knocking a man of jewish faith to the ground. and earlier this month a deadly shooting rampage at a northern new jersey kosher market that left six people dead. investigators blaming bias toward the jewish community and

abc news reporter will carr has more. >> reporter: according to authorities, the helicopter with six passengers and the pilot was flying just over a mile inland when it struck a cliff, then plummeted 100 yards down. all seven on board died including amy gannon and 13-year-old jocelyn gannon from wisconsin and a family of four from switzerland. the pilot, paul mattero, had 12 years of experience according to safari helicopters. >> you could tell he loved it, the knowledge he had about the island, he was very articulate and he was a very sweet man. >> reporter: in statement, safari helicopters says it's fully cooperating with the ntsb and the faa. kauai is known for its rugged, breathtaking landscape featured in movies like "jurassic park." tourists flocked to hawaii to take in these majestic views from the air. but according to the ntsb, there

we are looking at not only that level 1 system arriving today, but it will be light. and we will be looking at it to clear on out early for your monday. as we look at live doppler 7 right now, we are checking out not only the clouds but also a few showers up to the north and radar reflects that. in fact, looking at not only the light showers but the cold front offshore. that will allow for the rain to arrive later this afternoon. as it does, it will allow for the rain to come down in a moderate pace throughout part of the afternoon. there's the front. we have a system up to the north, an area of low pressure that usher in once again the cold air. san jose, 280, it will be a while until you see the rain. looking at some sun right now. temperatures stack up like this with mid-50s half moon bay to the upper 40s in redwood city. 52, san francisco. and a look at sfo with the clouds, no delays right now. 45 for you by the delta, one of the cooler locations.

46 in livermore. here's a look at that rain. 10:00 this morning, sonoma, napa. as we get into 1:00, it's sinking south into marin, san francisco, and also into the east bay. on the peninsula, looking at a few scattered showers. it's really from about 1:00, 2:00, to around 5:00 this afternoon where we'll see that moderate line of rain move through. some heavier cells here could see an isolated thunderstorm. and as it pushes through, taking much of the rain with it by 5:00, we've got scattered showers in the city and then by 7:00, 8:00, the system is still leaving us with a few isolated showers and then the system all sinks to the south. this is when we get into the colder air. those northwesterly winds with the clear air setting up for a chilly start to your monday and the afternoon, still some 50s around. rainfall amounts from a quarter to a third of an inch to san francisco to the coast. looks like napa, novato, a few of the locations where we'll see better than a half inch. ben lomond closing in on about

an inch of rain. so the higher elevations looking at more rainfall. a level 1 today on our storm impact scale with the light rain then becoming moderate. temperatures just in the low to mid-50s. breezy winds from time to time along the coast. we'll be looking at the conditions clearing out in time for your overnight. here are the clouds with mainly 40s, some upper 30s in the north bay. as we get into your new year's eve forecast, looks like we'll see partly cloudy skies to start your evening on tuesday night. clouds should increase, keeping us not as cold, but also maybe keeping it a little bit tricky for the fireworks. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy as we get towards midnight. early morning hours, still dry. temperatures in the 40s to low 40s in our north bay valleys, near 50 elsewhere around the bay and at the coast. the accuweather seven-day forecast, the level 1 system today arriving for many of you by noon into about 4:00, 5:00. and the rest of the week, workweek, looking pretty quiet.

this next story will hit home for any parent who has had to scrub crayon off their wall, clean their kitchen from spilled messes, or anything else. check this out. this young boy in texas got a magnifying glass in christmas and he ended up accidentally setting fire to his front yard. he and his two brothers rushed outside to see if they could light a piece of paper on fire. it worked. wearing their christmas pjs, the family quickly turned on the sprinklers, got water buckets, and put it all out. one way to start your new year's, i guess. >> that's hard to do, that little experiment. we're looking at rain already in the north bay. live doppler 7 highlighting it around our sweep. mt. st. helena, middletown, moving out of geyserville. the rainfall has yet to move
