basketball team returned to the airport after one of the two engines failed right after take off. this is video of emergency crews surrounding the chartered boeing 737 after it returned to minetta about 5:30. it landed safely. the team issued a statement saying they will stay the night in san jose and return to lawrence, kansas, when they are able. playing stanford at maples pavilion. friends and family have gathered to remember the three teenagers who died in a christmas car crash. dublin high school twins were killed in the crash and two other teens were also in the car and survived. abc 7 news reporter louis penna were at dublin high school with more for us. >> reporter: this community is heartbroken. we just her from family and friends of those three victims. we heard tears and laughter of them telling stories about those three students all best friends,

16 years old and a live look what's going on over here. this ended 20 minutes ago, but as you can see many of the family and friends you can see here consoling each other. all three victims were sophomores at dublin high school and in the vehicle were also two other teenagers. we were told today that -- the teenager's vehicle veered out of control and hit a utility pole. as to what the teens we doing out at 10:00 p.m. they were out to console a friend on christmas night. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. we're also told those two victims remain in the hospital recovering. we're also told here by dublin

high school, also told here by dublin high school that there will be grief counselors available for many students on january 6th. now to that attack at a hanukkah celebration north of new york city. five people were stabbed by an intruder by a machete type knife at the home of arab ae. the suspect appeared in court today and entered a plea of not guilty. police say the 38-year-old entered the rabbi's home in monsey, new york. several people were hurt. witnesses described it. >> he took out his knife from its holder and started hitting people back and forth, then he went to the kitchen and hit one guy there and then he came back to the dining room. >> police say thomas ran from the house and later apprehended in manhattan. new york governor andrew cuomo called the attack an act of domestic terrorism.

governor newsom tweeted a message this afternoon saying the attack that occurred in monsey was a horrific cowardly anti-semitic act. may we all be reminded how light drives out darkness. we must continue to push back against hatred and bigotry of all forms. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard in emeriville where people are gathered for a menorah lighting tonight. >> reporter: the menorah here was lit just a few minutes ago with songs and salebrasion, but that celebration was bittersweet. many are reacting to the recent violence. a menorah lighting in emeriville where there were mixed emotions this holiday. >> may we not know anymore terrible tragic events throughout the world. >> we're living in very, very turbulent times.

>> reporter: on this last night of hanukkah there's sadly little to celebrate during the festival of lights. >> what we just saw in new york is some people that are just out of touch and a lot of hatred, a lot of heartache. and they -- they go out and raise havoc. >> reporter: he denounced saturday's violence. new york's governor says it was the 13th anti-semitic attack in the state in three weeks. >> we have to be vigilant. we have to be -- we have to have security. >> reporter: the location on 6th street is more than visible. this play of worship has increased security since last year's shooting at a synagogue in pittsburgh. >> i'm sorry, enough and that's me. i'm angry. >> david is security director and member of this congregation. he's declined to say how security has increased but sadly

this house of worship had no choice. >> the anti-semitism angers me, it has to stop. and not only was it attack against jews but attack on one of the holidays in this case the hanukkah celebration. >> you have to realize that a little light pushes away a lot of darkness. >> reporter: the rabbi just told me that his prayer for the new year is peace. live in emeriville, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> a gunman opened fire inside a texas church killing one person and critically wounding another. armed church goers fatally shot the attacker. it happened at the west freeway church of christ in a community. investigators called the church goers who stopped the gunman heroes. police have called in the fbi to figure out what the motive was.

>> the fbi has dedicated significant resources to aid in this investigation. those were investigative resources and technical resources. we are working very hard to find motive to get to the bottom of what happened. >> the shooting was captured on the church's live stream. that clip has since been taken down. police have not released the identities of the deceased. civil rights icon john lewis announce today he's been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. the georgia congressman says the cancer was discovered during a routine medical visit. lewis says his doctors have told him medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases and says he has a fighting chance. lewis joined forces with martin luther king, jr. back in the '60s to lead a voting rights march in alabama. up next police are looking for a man who assaulted a nevato woman. and also an east bay newspaper

police posted photos on social media shortly after today's theft at the jc penny's the sun valley mall. you can see some items police recovered right there on the car. they say the thieves led them on a pursuit and police used spike strips to stop the car on highway 4. in san francisco a woman was returning to her car last night in the tenderloin and saw a man breaking into it. officers showed up in time to arrest this man. the sfpd identifies him as 40-year-old stephen mills. he was found with property belonging to the victim as well as with burglary tools. police are looking for witnesses or surveillance video that will help them find a man who attacked a woman in nevato last week. the woman was just getting out of her car when the attacker grabbed her from behind and put an object in her back demanding

money. he was wearing black clothing that included a hooded sweatshirt with a hood up, black sweat pants and black leather gloves. the woman got away when a passing vehicle startled the man. she was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. in the east bay an era came to an end today when readers picked up the final edition of the martinez news gazette. it began publish in 1858, 161 years ago. one woman has written for the paper since the 1960s and she believes its void. >> the martinez gazette was the only paper that sent a reporter to city council and school board. >> sad ending. you know, it seems like newspapers are not being read as much anymore. >> on friday former staff members held a reception to say good-bye to the paper. the city of martinez also

roads. here's francis. >> we have lots of wet roads all around the bay area right now. you can see the heavier rain moving south of san jose now, even south of gilroy and the heavier rain there in the red and in the orange. we are still getting some moderate rainfall through parts of the north bay like nevato and vallejo, but the rain will be tapering very soon. and also here's what you can expect. so basically the things you need to know about the forecast, we have the rain tapering tonight, turning into isolated showers in the next few hours. tomorrow you will wake up to a little bit of a cloudy start, but it will clear very quickly, and we'll get lots of sunshine in the afternoon, and then if you have plans for new year's eve it's going to be mild and dry. in fact it's looking dry almost all week. current temperatures right now are in the 50s. low 50s and upper 40s. in san francisco it's 51. g g gilroy down to 41 and one of the

cooler spots at 46 degrees. as we look outside you'll see lots of low clouds and some fog around the bay right now. looking towards from san francisco to emeriville so we can't see across the bay to san francisco. we're at the end of this system and we ranked it a 1 out of 5. it's a light storm, so it's going to continue through tonight. it's turned into some scattered showers, isolated showers. at the end of it we think anywhere will be about 0.10 to half an inch of rain. and also we could get a little bit more in the coastal mountains. here's how it plays out. you'll notice the system slides south and takes the rain with it. light showers by midnight drying out in the north bay and a few clouds in the morning, and lunchtime, sunny, dry and clear. so tomorrow morning overnight lows will be in the 40s, even some 30s with some fog as well. oakland 44, san jose 43 and the

cooler spots will be of course in the north bay valleys and upper 30s there. santa rosa, 37. tomorrow put the umbrellas away, you'll actually need sunscreen. temperatures will be a little bit above average in the spots. we'll even see some low 60s in some areas. san francisco and around the bay lots of upper 50s. 57, san jose, 59 degrees and near 60 for some of the inland areas. now, great news for those heading out for new year's eve. it is going to be dry all day long. mostly cloudy at lunchtime, mild in the afternoon, cooling down quickly after the sun sets. so if you are staying out late, grab a jacket because temperatures will be in the low to mid-40s by midnight. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. i hope you like it. most of us won't even notice it. by the time you wake up it's going to be gone. lots of sunshine tomorrow, mild temperatures and dry for new year's eve. happy new year on wednesday.

wild. this is just one of the many special illuminated installations and kinetic sculptures. there are light tables that respond to touch, software program light displays and a 20 foot exhibit called cube tron core. the festival kicked off today and will run through late january, so there's plenty of time to be mesmerized by the light show. and when kids get to be interactive with it like that, that's cool. i wish i had something like that growing up. we had chalk. >> my kids still have sidewalk chalk. we use it every now and then. >> dry erase boards. >> you can have chalk on an ipad. that's it for abc 7 news at 6:00. don't forget we have news at 11:00, and we hope to see you
