breaking news. when you download it, enable the push alert feature. in the east bay, three teenagers killed in a christmas night car crash were remembered at dublin high school tonight. classmates and teachers turned out for a candlelight vigil. >> reporter: that's right. this community is hard broken. the three ictims were all students at dublin high school. tonight they gather to console each other, share stories, and light up candles in their names. candles that shine almost as bright as their personalities. >> it's going to be hard going to school not seeing him. >> reporter: family and friends remember the teens. all three died in car crash christmas night. in the vehicle were also two other teenager who is survived.

samantha vargas, a junior at dublin high school, and the twins' cousin who is in a coma. >> he's not doing good. he's not breathing on his own. but i know god works his miracles and he's in the room with him right now and he's holding him and he's going to wake up. >> reporter: according to chp, the teenagers' vehicle veered out of control and hit a utility poll. the teens went out at 10:00 p.m. to visit a friend on christmas night. they never returned home. what was the last thing you said to javier? >> we were on snapchat and he would send pictures of him smiling. >> these smiles are how the community wants to remember them. making it hard for people to tell them apart. even in this photo, their family fell for it one last time. mark is the one on the right and

it's going to change a lot in the next hour. san francisco got a quarter inof rain today and we're seeing light rain fall through parts of the peninsula, even sprinkles in concord. they got .6 of an inch, some areas in the north bay got an inch as well. this is the tail end of the system as i show you the forecast animation in the next hour it's almost all gone and we'll wake up to partly cloudy skies tomorrow. but more sunshine. and i'll have the new year's eve forecast coming up as well. >> thank you. snow is expected to cross the sierra tonight. you're looking at cal tran's traffic showing traffic this evening. right now chains are not required for cars. in the south bay, a chartered boeing 737 that took off from the san jose international airport had to return to the airport because of an engine problem. you can see that engine surging in this video. university of kansas men's

basketball team was on board after winning the game against stanford. the plane came in and landed safely. fire trucks came in. the team will overnight in the south bay. while we're talking about the san jose airport, there's a proposal to dramatically expand it, including adding a concourse with 14 new gates building a parking garage. our partners report while this would boost the number of passengers in silicon valley, the additional pollution it would create is a real concern. there's an environmental report already going through a public review. the san jose city council is expected to take up the plan at its january 14th meeting. b.a.r.t.'s early morning sweeps appear to be working when it comes to stopping fare evaders. chronicle insider wrote about it in today's chronicle. leaving embarcadero station in

terrorism. five people were stabbed during a hanukkah celebration, among them the rabbi's son. grafton thomas ran from the home in munsey after the attack. he was later caught by new york city police officers in harlem covered in blood, smelling of bleach. >> i think these are domestic terrorists. they are trying to inflict fear. they're motivated by hate. they are doing mass attacks. these are terrorists. >> the suspect's family released a statement tonight saying thomas has a long history of mental illness and hospitalizations. back here in the bay area the jewish community is reacting to the violence saying it must end. cornell barnard tells us many people are feeling angry. ♪ >> reporter: a minora lighting where there was mixed emotions on this holiday. >> any more terrible tragic

morning. officers say the suspect is a white man 35 to 45 years of age with blonde hair. the church is the oldest african-american church between san mateo and san jose. a gunman opened fire inside a texas church killing one person and critically wounding another. armed church goers then fatally shot the attack. it happened at the west freeway church of christ in the community of white settlement eight miles west of ft. worth. police have not released identities of the deceased or a motive. in the east bay, smash and grab suspects didn't get far. police posted photos on social media shortly after the theft today. you can see some of the items police recovered right there in the car. they say the thieves led them on a pursuit. police used spike strips to stop the car on highway 4.

the. looks like blue skies with clouds. >> we'll see lots of sunshine tomorrow. here a look at live doppler 7 with a satellite radar image. look how quickly the showers are leaving the bay area. we're seeing a few sprinkles right now near pacifica and also south san francisco. and here's a live look at we check out the view from emeryville. and here's basically what you can expect with the forecast. the showers are ending right now. in fact they'll be over in the next hour or so. tomorrow we'll start off a little bit chilly in the morning but then we'll see lots of sunshine in the afternoon. temperatures will be a little bit warmer. and then look for a mild and dry new year's eve. current temperatures right now are dropping into the 40s for many spots. san francisco is currently 49, san jose still hanging on to 51 degrees, and we're seeing mid 40s through fairfield and in brentwood. and this time as we look out

from emeryville you can see across the bay bridge into san francisco now because the rain is ending and things are changing pretty quickly. in fact i want to show you the forecast animation. look at 12:00. by midnight we still see a few sprinkles possibly in the east bay and also in san jose, but then check out in the next hour, it quickly goes away. tomorrow morning we'll wake up to some clouds even the system moves south and takes the clouds with it. we'll get sunshine early on and bright skies for everyone allowing temperatures to warm up quite a bit from today. also tonight's lows will be not as cold, temperatures will be in the mid 40s because we'll still be hanging on to that cloud cover long enough although upper 30s through parts of the north bay like lakeport, santa rosa, ukiah, and cloverdale. those clouds quickly clear with plenty of sunshine. some of the warmest

investigators statements. the faa and ntsb are investigating a horrific plane crash just ten miles outside washington, d.c. the small plane slammed into a home in maryland. the pilot, the only one on board, did not survive. fortunately no one on the ground was hurt. the plane had just taken off from college park airport earlier in the afternoon. >> the plane came from behind the house and hit the carport and blew the car to the other side of the street. >> i was putting my daughter to sleep and you hear a loud -- like a boom. and then the house had shook. >> neighbors say the owners of the two-story home were on vacation. nobody was there. the pilot has not been identified. civil rights icon congressman john lewis says he's been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. the georgia congressman says it was discovered during a routine

medical visit. recent medical advances have made his type of cancer treatable in many cases and says he has a fighting chance. lewis joined forces with martin luther king, jr. to lead a march in selma, alabama. he'll continue to washington in the coming days. now to the the impeachment showdown, republicans and democrats are facing off over how president trump will be tried in the senate. 11 days after the house voted to impeach him, republicans are lashing out at nancy pelosi for withholding the articles of impeachment. pelosi is standing firm concerned about what proceedings would look like. >> we keep hearing president trump say he's going to be exonerated. look, if you have a rigged trial, there is no exoneration in acquittal. >> it's not a criminal trial. the senate is not really a jury. it's both jury and judge. there are no rules here.

>> and tonight a new report from the "new york times" says white house officials urged the president to release the funds to ukraine. in the east bay, readers picked up the final edition of the martinez news gazelle. the paper began publishing in 1858, 161 years ago. one woman has written for the paper since the 1960s and she believes its exit will leave a void. >> we need a local paper and the martinez news gazette in this day and age was the only paper that sent a reporter to city council and school board. >> sad ending. it seems like newspapers are not being read as much anymore. >> on friday, current and former staff members held a reception to say good-bye to the paper. the city of martinez also saluted barbara setco, the legal editor for the past 38 years. some things just can't wait.
