athletes of the decade. 23-time grand slam champion serena williams acing the competition on the female side. and lebron james was crowned king on the men's side. those are some of our top stories on this monday, december 30th. good morning, everyone. great to have andrea here. we do begin this half hour with the monster storm covering much of the eastern u.s. >> the weather radar shows snow from kansas to canada and along the border. there's rain falling now from the great lakes all the way down to the coast and down into the southeast. >> it's making the return from christmas or the trip for new year's a misery for many. abc's rob marciano reports. >> reporter: a major winter storm now reaching east across the country, bringing wind-driven snow, ice, and rain as millions continue to travel this holiday week. >> we've got to make sure that we pay attention to the

ever-changing road conditions. >> reporter: 32 million under weather alerts from kansas to maine. heavy snow, low visibility, and high winds making the roads nearly impassable in colorado, leaving some drivers stranded on the sides of highways. >> it's been pretty icy right around here. >> reporter: whiteout conditions in minnesota overturning trucks and burying cars along the highways there. and across the dakotas, blizzard conditions dropping over a foot of snow, creating a travel nightmare. motorists having to dig their vehicles out. snowplows working overtime clearing the roads. difficult driving conditions shutting down several major interstates. in texas, kcbd capturing this terrifying moment on friday, showing just how quickly accidents can occur in bad weather. a tractor-trailer losing control in heavy fog, plowing into vehicles and state troopers. the 18-wheeler flipping on its side, injuring two people, including one of the troopers. rob marciano, abc news, new york.

>> all right, thanks, rob. dozens of today's flights have already been canceled in places like boston and toronto. >> let's get details about today's weather from accuweather's adam del rosso. adam, good morning. >> kenneth, andrea, good morning. we're tracking this powerful storm moving across the great lakes, bringing more heavy snow and gusty winds to the upper midwest. we're talking 1 to 2 feet of snow across the dakotas and into the arrowhead of minnesota by the time we head into tomorrow morning. we got another storm into the northeast as well. this one bringing not only snow but que a bit of some ice into portions of new england, leading to some tricky travel. south of boston, that's where this mainly stays as rain. but north of the ice into northern maine, we're talking 1 to 1 1/2 feet of snow by the time we wrap up our tuesday. looking ahead to new year's eve, there will be some spotty snow showers around the great lakes. also some rain into the pacific northwest. otherwise, temperature-wise pretty quiet and nice across the country. kenneth, andrea.

>> adam, thank you. let's get to another big story this morning, a city in texas is coming to grips with a deadly church shooting as authorities search for a motive. >> a man with a rifle opened fire just before communion killing two parishioners before he was gunned down by church members. it was all caught on camera. abc's jim ryan has the details. >> reporter: it was a typical livestream of the sunday service at west freeway church of christ outside ft. worth. when suddenly -- as parishioners finished taking communion, a man in a large coat in the back gets up and aims a gun at a man nearby. fatally wounding him and a second man who would later succumb to his injuries. two of the volunteers on the parish security force then draw their weapons and take out the killer. >> this team responded quickly and within six seconds the shooting was over. >> reporter: worshippers scrambled for cover, some bolting for the exits. >> it was a sad thing that he had to come into the congregation and hurt people, and it's a sad thing that we had

to hurt him. >> reporter: the church's pastor is stunned. >> we lost two great men today, but it could have been a lot worse. and i'm thankful that our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves. >> reporter: outside, visibly shaken parishioners hugged each other for comfort. the lieutenant governor of texas praising the swift response. >> this is going to be something that is studied and watched by law enforcement and private citizens and churches or anyone who else who trains of their own security to see how lives can be saved. jim ryan, abc news, texas. >> thank you, jim. president trump and his republican allies are blasting house speaker nancy pelosi for withholding the articles of impeachment from the senate. democrats are defending pelosi's decision to wait until she knows what the senate trial will look like, saying those who vote against witnesses and documents are complicit in a cover-up. meanwhile, "the new york times" is offering new details about the freeze on aid to ukraine.

it says in august then-national security adviser john bolton urged president trump to release the funds during an oval office meeting. the president reportedly responded, ukraine is a corrupt country and we are pissing away our money. president trump has been briefed about u.s. air strikes against iranian-backed militia groups. that group is blamed for a rocket attack that killed an american contractor in iraq. >> the group says u.s. strikes resulted in the deaths of nearly 20 of its members. more from abc's brad mielke. >> yeah, that's right. these missiles struck targets in iraq and syria, but the real aim here was iran. that's because for years the u.s. has accused iran of sponsoring groups that attack american troops. that's exactly what the u.s. says happened last week. this really ramped up on friday when a group called kata'ib hezbollah fired missiles at an iraqi military base housing american troops. a u.s. civilian contractor was

killed. but the bigger issue here is what's going on behind the scenes because this group which attacked americans throughout the iraq war is widely seen as getting support from iranians. abc's elizabeth mclaughlin says that this was kind of an american brush-back to the iranian regime. >> this is really what the u.s. likes to call a proportional response. the attacks that happened over the weekend were five what they call defensive strikes. they targeted weapons storage facilities, command and control locations, to send a warning that if you continue to attack these military bases and you continue to threaten u.s. and coalition interests, that the united states will respond. of course iran saying that the u.s. has violated iraqi sovereignty. >> still, she says, nowhere near as serious as an attack on iranian soil. and still unclear how much iran may direct these groups in iraq itself. listen on apple podcasts or your favorite podcasting app. kenneth, andrea.

>> all right, brad, thank you. turning to longtime congressman and civil rights icon john lewis vowing to keep fighting after announcing he is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. the 79-year-old georgia democrat says he plans to undergo treatment and return to washington. he's been flooded with well wishes, including from presidents obama and clinton. >> we are also wishing him well. he said he's clear-eyed about his prognosis. he's a fighter and he's done so much for this country, definitely an icon there. and former president jimmy carter returned to church. the 95-year-old carter and his wife rosalynn were back at their church in plains, georgia, for the first time since earlier this month. >> the carters greeted other parrisher er parrishioners after the service was over. >> talk about a fighter there. president carter back at it there on sunday church service. dozens of kids found themselves arguing for custody rights in an indiana courthouse this weekend.

>> that's the message from the seattle public schools to its students. kids who are not up to date on their shots won't be allowed to return from the winter break. it's a new state law. >> and those who come to school anyway will be kept in a separate room until their parents come to pick them up. the district is offering free vaccination clinics today and friday. turning now to an incident that's serving as a reminder of how important it is to talk to your children about what to do if they're ever approached by a stranger. >> an apparent attempted abduction was foiled by a quick-thinking 12-year-old girl who came to the rescue of her own brother. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: this little boy is safe at home after his brave 12-year-old sister stepped in and stopped this attempted kidnapping. >> she was saying that my brother was her baby and i was just yelling back at her saying it's not her baby, that that's my brother. >> reporter: police say makayla phillips, her two siblings and grandmother were eating at this restaurant in oklahoma when a woman they didn't know walked up

to the youngest two kids. >> she gave both of them a kiss, and my grandma, she thought it was weird, and like not right. >> reporter: moments later this surveillance video, being reviewed by police, shows the suspect grab 2-year-old brett. a second angle shows makayla take her brother back and confront the woman. >> i yelled at her and i said, don't touch my brother. >> reporter: makayla's quick reaction drawing attention, leading restaurant employees to force the woman to leave. just the latest example of a child thwarting an attempted abduction. >> i was scared. >> reporter: 10-year-old madison rain says she knew just what to do when a man pulled up to her in an suv as she walked in this arizona park last year. >> he told me that my brother has been in a serious accident and he told me to come pick you up. >> reporter: but her family had just taught her to ask for a specific code word before going anywhere with a stranger. >> i asked him what the code was, because my family has a code, and he didn't know it, so i ran. >> reporter: that man took off.

a doberman and pitbull pair not afraid of a little adventure or a ride on a city bus. on a 20-degree night just days before christmas, the two had wandered miles from home. >> we could not find them, we were panicked, we were scared. >> reporter: enter milwaukee county bus driver jamie grybowski. >> hey, you two, you need to go home right now! >> reporter: she spotted the duo running in and out of traffic. >> i couldn't leave them out there like that. people nowadays, if they can hit humans, what is a dog? >> reporter: grabowski knew she needed to act fast. leading the dogs onto the bus, keeping them safe and warm inside. >> come here, i'm going to get you home. >> reporter: a police officer eventually picking the dogs up and bringing them to a shelter where they were reunited with their family, all of them together again just in time for the holidays. >> i was so happy that someone took time out of their day to turn in our dogs and say, i found the dogs. >> reporter: that family joining the growing ranks of milwaukee residents touched by the good

>> whit johnson, everyone. >> we moved here a year and a half ago from los angeles, have two kids ages 5 and 7, two little girls. originally i'm from hawaii. >> oh, great. am i pronouncing it right when i say hawaii? >> technically it's hawaii. >> doing it wrong. we're so happy to have you here. big fan of whit, big fan of yours, i always say the two nicest people here at abc news and in the business. >> thank you. >> so glad to have you next to me. very tragic, that deadly attack inside a church near ft. worth texas just days after christmas. >> a shooter described as a transient with roots in the area opened fire during sunday service killing two men before he was taken down by the church security team. more than 200 people were inside when the shots rang out sending them ducking for cover. abc's marcus moore has the latest. >> reporter: these shocking images out of texas. [ gunshots ] gunfire interrupting a quiet church service. the violence unfolding just

minutes before 10:00 a.m. just as parishioners started receiving communion at the west freeway church of christ near ft. worth. the church live-streaming the service. you can see the shooter sitting in the back of the room wearing a large coat. watch as he pulls out a gun and aims it at a man nearby. another man appears to reach for his weapon but the gunman fires first, shooting him and a second man. >> we're going to need help with a patient here. >> reporter: the gunshots sparking panic in the pews. worshippers seen ducking for cover. one man covering his wife with his own body. >> it was a sad thing that he had to come into the congregation and hurt people, and it's a sad thing that we had to hurt him. >> reporter: in just seconds, several parishioners opened fire hitting the gunman who managed to fire one last shot before falling to the ground, dying at the scene. people rushing over and pointing they are weapons at the man on the ground. several others hurt, one critically, the gunman also shot dead. >> today evil walked boldly

among us. but let me remind you, good people raised up and stopped it before it got worse. >> reporter: outside officers swarming the scene, shutting down streets. parishioners visibly shaken. hugging each other for comfort. this shooting lasted just seconds, and one man who said he had a relative inside the church at the time said he is thankful for so many good guys with guns. the investigation into a possible motive is still under way. marcus moore, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to marcus there. just a horrifying scene there. and from one attack to another, new york city's getting to work trying to stop an outbreak of anti-semitic violence. that includes increased police patrol in jewish neighborhoods. >> the latest incident happened saturday night in a new york suburb when a suspect entered hanukkah celebration at a rabbi's home and stabbed five people. then the suspect took off in a car. >> i ran into the other room because i tried to save my life. i saw him running down this way. >> just swinging this sword, knife, i don't know what it was, back and forth, hitting people. >> a witness took down the

suspect's license plate and gave it to police. a surveillance camera captured grafton thomas being arrested in new york city shortly after the attack. he's already pled not guilty to five counts of attempted murder and other charges. his family says thomas has a long history of mental illness. now to the partisan battle over the terms of the senate impeachment trial that's still in limbo as house speaker nancy pelosi refuses to hand off the articles of impeachment. now there's a new report revealing fresh details on the administration's actions before and after the freeze on military aid ukraine. abc's rachel scott has more. >> reporter: 11 days after the house voted to impeach president trump, the president and republicans are lashing out at house speaker nancy pelosi for withholding the articles of impeachment. >> well, it's her duty to turn it over, it's not like some mechanism she can control. >> reporter: but pelosi is standing firm, concerned about what senate proceedings would look like after senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said he plans to work in, quote, total coordination with the white house.

>> we keep hearing president trump saying he's going to be exonerated. look, if you have a rigged trial there's no exoneration in acquittal. >> it's not a criminal trial. the senate is not really a jury, it's both jury and judge. there are no rules here. >> reporter: democrats say pelosi has been clear, there will be a trial, but say republicans will have to answer to the american people if there are no witnesses. >> those who vote against witnesses and vote against documents are essentially telling the american people, they don't want to see anything, they don't want to hear anything, and in doing so you're really complicit in a cover-up. >> reporter: and a new report from "the new york times" adding to the timeline of the administration's hold on military aid to ukraine. according to "the times," in august white house officials met with the president in the oval office urging him to release the funds. former national security adviser john bolton argued, this is in america's interest. the president reportedly responding, ukraine is a corrupt

country, we are pissing away our money. lawmakers don't appear to be any closer to resolving this before the end of the holiday recess. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says they can't do anything until those articles of impeachment are handed over, and lawmakers are not back in washington until after the start of the new year. rachel scott, abc news, west palm beach, florida. >> all right, rachel, thank you. well wishes are pouring in for civil rights icon and congressman john lewis after he announced that he's battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. the 79-year-old georgia democrat known as the conscience of congress says he may miss some votes while he undergoes treatment but has no plans to step down. lewis is best known for leading the bloody sunday march in selma, alabama, where he was badly beaten by police. after his diagnosis, he said, quote, i have never faced a fight quite like the one i have now. and former president obama tweeted, if there's one thing i love about john lewis, it's his incomparable will to fight. i know he's got a lot more of that left in him.

also new details this morning in the louisiana plane crash that left five people dead. investigators say the twin-engine piper went down less than a minute after taking off saturday. officials also say the pilot never signaled the plane was in trouble though air traffic control did issue a low altitude alert. ntsb crews are concerned they won't be able to find the plane's flight data recorder due to the heavy damage. so weather may have been a factor in that crash. >> a major storm is bringing rain and snow to much of the western midwest. >> this same system already created blizzard conditions this weekend in the dakotas and western minnesota. more than a foot of snow has fallen and some interstate highways are closed. >> what a mess. the final sunday of the nfl regular season saw san francisco crowned the best in the nfc by just inches. >> inches. the 49ers were clinging to a five-point lead in seattle. the seahawks' jacob hollister makes the catch with seconds

grafton thomas, says he has a long history of mental illness. they also claim thomas has no known history of anti-semitism and that he's not a member of any hate groups. >> but this morning, he's in custody and is charged with attempted murder. abc's stephanie ramos reports. >> reporter: a jewish community reeling after five people were stabbed during a hanukkah celebration in what the governor of new york is calling an act of domestic terrorism. >> report of multiple people stabbed. >> reporter: just around 10:00 p.m. saturday night, families gathering at the home of a rockland county rabbi for the seventh night of hanukkah when a man burst in holding a machete. those inside describing a scene of terror. >> i ran into the other room because i tried to save my life. i saw running down this way. >> just swinging a sword, knife, i don't know what it was, back and forth, hitting people. >> reporter: one of the five stabbed is still in critical condition with a skull fracture. >> why did you do it? >> reporter: police say the suspect, 38-year-old grafton thomas, ran from the home and headed toward the nearby synagogue.

>> we were scared but we were not surprised. why is this happening? >> reporter: the community public affairs council posting this surveillance video which they say shows the suspect leaving the scene in a car, this man chasing after him writing down the license plate. >> i saw him going into his car. >> reporter: police say that plate number was critical to the case. the nypd later apprehending thomas in harlem and say he was covered in blood. thomas in a white plastic jumpsuit arraigned, charged with five counts of attempted murder. governor cuomo says this attack is the 13th anti-semitic incident since the beginning of december in new york state. and earlier this month, four killed after a shooting at this kosher grocery store in new jersey. >> it is an american cancer that is spreading in the body. the situation has gotten so bad, frankly, that we have to increase our legal enforcement,

not just with more police, but we have to change the laws to call this what it is. this is terrorism. >> reporter: and as this community gathers to celebrate the eighth and final night of hanukkah, a plea for answers. >> something must be done, it's time, we have to put our foot down to this. >> reporter: the fbi is working to obttain a warrant to access all of thomas' online accounts, his devices, to figure on the what he was reading, writing, and saying. right now, law enforcement officials say they have not found a link to other recent attacks. thomas is pleading not guilty to all of the charges. stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. >> all right, thank you, stephanie. and now to another tragic event over the weekend. worshippers also came under attack at a church in texas when a gunman opened fire in the middle of sunday service, killing two people. >> the deadly shooting was caught on camera inside the church near ft. worth filled with more than 200 parishioners.

the attack lasted just six seconds before the gunman was shot to death by members of the church's well-trained security team. >> it was a sad thing that he had to come into the congregation and hurt people, and it's a sad thing that we had to hurt him. >> authorities are still searching for a motive. they haven't released the gunman's name but they described him as a transient with a history of arrests. the u.s. has carried out air strikes in iraq and syria against an iranian-backed militia group. blamed for an attack that killed an american contractor. defense secretary mark esper and secretary of state mike pompeo went to florida to brief president trump about the strikes. five sites were hit. pompeo said the strikes would send a message to iran that the u.s. would not tolerate actions that would jeopardize u.s. lives. the militia group says those strikes killed nearly 20 people. kim jong-un is calling on north korean officials and his military to prepare for active and offensive measures to protect his country's security and sovereignty but he didn't elaborate on what those measures might be.

kim is holding several days of meetings with the north's ruling party amid concerns that he could suspend nuclear diplomacy with the u.s. if the trump administration refused to make concessions. a quiet day in a washington, d.c., suburb turned to panic as a small plane slammed into a maryland home sparking a fire. the crash killed the pilot and left residents shaken. here's abc's mona kosar abdi. >> reporter: a terrifying scene unfolding in maryland. a plane slamming into a house. >> a reported house fire after a plane crash. >> reporter: the small plane crashing minutes after taking off from college park airport this afternoon killing the pilot. authorities say no one was inside the home at the time. michael curran says his mother lives in the home next to where the plane crashed. she came home from church to flames and smoke billowing from her neighbor's home and debris in the street. >> the plane came from behind the house and hit the carport and blew the car to the other side of the street. >>eporter: local emergency teams rushed to the scene. >> our technical rescue and

hazmat teams are on scene just to make sure that there's no chemical runoff and that the neighborhood is safe. >> reporter: according to authorities the single-engine plane with just the pilot on board plunged into this residential suburb just miles from washington, d.c. luckily no one on the ground was hurt. crews are checking for fuel runoff and other hazardous concerns and the ntsb is investigating and trying to determine if weather played a part. >> thanks to mona there reporting from new carlton, maryland. in other news, investigators are on the scene of thursday's helicopter crash in hawaii. it hit a rainforest cliff wall about a mile inland. all seven people on board were killed including a family of four from switzerland. weather is affecting search efforts. investigators are looking into what role it may have played in that crash. turning now to the weather, a major storm is sweeping across northern states overnight. >> scenes like this one from denver are being played out throughout the northern plains. more than a foot of snow has
